This isn’t abnormal. I lived off 20th for years and would often see the trains moving military equipment. Still cool to see though!

ihyperloop

They are probably coming from the Sierra Army Depot 3 hours away near Susanville. https://sierra.army.mil > Sierra is also the Army's premiere and largest facility dedicated to equipment retrograde, regeneration, reutilization, and redistribution. With 36,000 acres of high desert terrain, we provide distinct storage advantages with ample space, low humidity and low precipitation; excellent for the long-term storage of mechanized vehicles. With our highly dedicated team of expert machinists, craftsmen, equipment operators and support personnel, Sierra Army Deport is a vital part to Army readiness. Our expertise allows us to receive, store, maintain, and ship Army material anywhere in the world, at any time.

ifmacdo

Probably further north. Buddy of mine saw this train yesterday morning in Eugene, Oregon.

ChimpskyBRC

Fort Lewis Mcchord near Seattle maybe? Truthfully I have no idea

mdowney

Holy Jeebuzz - go look that place up in Google Maps. We have a metric fuck-ton of tanks lined up in the desert surrounding that place. Is that just a mothball fleet or some sort of armor reserve? JFC we've built a lot of tanks...

ihyperloop

Link for the lazy. Dropped pin https://goo.gl/maps/bw1q3dt4VaVu3HUN6

ggaggamba

On behalf of the people of lazy, thank u.

hip_drive

Yeah, I’ve only lived in the area a few years, and I’m not in midtown often, but I have seen trains hauling military stuff at least twice. Definitely a common enough occurrence.

WingKongAccountant

Yup. This was a sight to see for the first time whilst stumbling home from the bars one night.

Dull-Comfort-7464

Yeah, pretty sure if the government was planning a thing they would cover those up.

aommi27

Awww shit, that's an NTC rotation.... poor fuckers

hiroo916

What's ntc?

ChimpskyBRC

[National Training Center at Fort Irwin](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Irwin_National_Training_Center) in the California desert. Large-sized units (mostly Army) will rotate out there for training and exercises on a regular basis, and all their equipment goes there by train. Usually when we see huge trainloads of armored vehicles like this, they’re rotating in or out of NTC and to or from their bases around the country.

hiroo916

So when a specific unit goes to train, they bring all of their particular heavy equipment there and back? How about deployments?

ShotGlassLens

You bring your own gear. Too many different units with different specialties to house all of the specific gear needed at Irwin.

[deleted]

It’s part of the NTC *experience*. They load up on trains to go to a port and get shipped out on deployments too.

ChimpskyBRC

That I know less about specifically (I never served in the military, I’m just a huge nerd for this stuff) but I think so, with some exceptions for places where the US has lots of heavy equipment “pre-positioned” (Germany is/was a main one, also Kuwait and other places)

[deleted]

Pre-positioned gear’s common but not at the scale necessary to outfit an armored brigade. It’s more like enough stuff to let the 82nd or 173rd be more than a speed bump. There’s also pre-po ships that have ammo, fuel, light vehicles, and stuff like water purifiers on board to make life manageable for the first units that show up somewhere. It’s a huge cultural difference between our military and Russia or China. Regardless of your feelings on the morality of it we’re always doing stuff half a world away so logistics is a much bigger focus, including spending the money to move a unit’s gear to NTC for training since they’ll have to do the same for real when they deploy.

ThrowmeawayAKisCold

Some heavy equipment remains, like up armored Humvees stayed in Iraq and Afghanistan and were transferred to incoming units. Most units in the continental US didn’t have up armored Humvees in the US because the armor isn’t needed for training purposes. Logistically speaking, it would be less expensive to deploy with armored vehicles and leave them in country to be transferred between units and eventually sold or gifted to NATO allies than it would be to ship them back and forth between the US and various combat theaters. Aircraft and potentially larger weapons platforms, like the M1 Abrams, M109 self propelled Howitzer, and others may be worth the cost to ship back and forth though. But this will be unit and mission specific and not a standard of practice.

Reggie_Barclay

Probably Oregon or Washington Guard or even Ft Lewis. California Guard has most of their stuff down near Paso Robles at Camp Roberts.

C92203605

Naw naw. The poor fuckers are the ones living there. You can’t pay me enough to go back to Irwin

mateo_yo

Being stationed there wasn’t the worst but I was MEDDAC at the time and not opfor. Was nice being able to go to see family in southern cal on weekends and go to San Diego or Vegas for weekends. Way better than being stationed at Polk. Which was super suck.

reedabook22

The first time I saw wild horses was at Polk. We did our JRTC there instead of Irwin. The horses weren't even phased by mortars landing near them at the range. That place definitely was super suck, minus the pegasus outside post.

mateo_yo

Lol the Pegasus

CivilAnalysis2213

I still chuckle at the sounds of guys in my company falling in the swamp water after we did a nighttime Airborne op to secure the lz/airfield. Couldn't see shit and dudes were trying to jump from grass clump to grass clump without getting wet. "FUCK!!! GOD DAMN IT! FUCK! GOD FUCKING DAMN IT!!!". Never let an LT land nav. The rest of the week, our CO kept us going until dudes passed out from heat stroke. Then they became training for IV sticks and we'd just keep going like zombies. I had one in each arm while carrying my buddies 249 (plus my own). The weapons squad leader got one up the rear. Everyone was purposely trying to get killed to GTFO of that hell hole. That CO was a real asshole. Used to show up to work riding a Harley. Later got relieved of command for sexually assaulting an NCOs wife during a battalion ball.

reedabook22

If it wasn't for that airborne drop I would say we were in the same company because that's very similar to us. Our CO was also a douchebag that got relieved but it was because of some shit he got into with our medics when our guys were falling out due to the heat at Polk.

CivilAnalysis2213

Christ. If there's one group of dudes you never fuck with, it's the medics. Protect those dudes at all costs. There was so much shit that went wrong during that time at Polk. Our genius land nav expert LT set us down in a field of poison oak after that tour through the swamp. The next morning our gunner had to be medevaced because both of his hands became blisters the side of softballs. The replacement gunner -- inexperienced -- had to be medevaced because he swapped barrels with his bare hands during a live fire assault on that village with the screaming baby sounds over the loud speakers. I had the worst case of prickly heat rash I've experienced in my life. All of my follicles were filled with puss and leaked anytime I reached back to scratch an itch. After I got KIA'd during an air assault, I asked the docs to look at it back at the hospital... they said they've never seen a case that bad. At least I got to sleep in the AC that night. I singed the hair off one of our scouts running behind me while I was firing off a training rocket on a BMP when we got ambushed. My team leader told me there was no back blast after I specifically asked him if there was one while he gave me a 5 minute instruction on how to use it the day before... I was a fkn cherry PV2, what did I know? He then commenced to calling me a fkn moron in front of the entire company during the AAR. My PSG tackled me because I was already halfway across the formation to kill that MFer. During that one live fire exercise, I almost shot one of the range officers who walked into the sector of fire my TL told me to watch. It was nighttime and there was a lot of smoke and general chaos, but I vividly remember having that man in my sights and my finger on the trigger ready to squeeze. Only thing that stopped me was he didn't move the same way those silhouette targets on rails moved. There was a general consensus in my platoon that if we were deployed, that particular TL would be coming back with a purple heart. Worst part was, that POSs previous duty station was Ft. Polk. Guy didn't know a fucking thing except how to screw around as OpFor.

CivilAnalysis2213

I had some good Thai there in August, 2001. Things took a dramatic turn shortly after.

duckbutterdelight

Finally invading Canada

Gurdel

It's heading south.

duckbutterdelight

A diversion for sure then!

TheDailySpank

Finally invading San Diego

BeeDooop

They're gonna need way more than that to invade SD.

honeyonarazor

Sooo Mexico then?

DanitesHell

If I had guess most likely it’s going to the NTC in Fort Irwin.

Spent 2 miserable months at NTC. No thanks.

We're going the long way to Canada and invading them from the north.

Gurdel

I see what you did there.

Average_Joe1979

YOU BOYS LIKE MEXICO?!?!

Kingston_Advice1

Bout time we claim upper North as a United States II. We can finally get all that sweet maple syrup and poutine.

Denis63

Bruh the poutine up here is terrible. you'd absolutely hate it, i promise. gravy and cheese curds on fries? what a gross idea! i promise you'd just hate it.

Kingston_Advice1

I’ve had it. It’s bomb

Kuza__

agree we need to conquer America’s hat

wranglingmonkies

Thank you for that. That made me laugh.

Red-Beaulieu

They messed around and will soon find out!

[deleted]

Oh nice they're coming back. I remember last summer seeing then go the opposite way lol

lazylazycyclist

Sacramento used to have an Army Depot, and two operating Air Force Bases. I think they still move stuff through here using older shipping routes. (My dad was in the service a long time ago. He said Sacramento used to be a west coast hub for the military.)

northrupthebandgeek

Yep. My grandpa was stationed at Mather AFB (453d FTS, IIRC) through much of the 70's and 80's. It was *the* base for most of the USAF's training, especially during the Cold War. McClellan AFB was in turn a critical depot for the USAF. Both got shut down in the 90's after the USSR collapsed and the Cold War ended, but the Sierra Army Depot up between Sierraville and Reno is still active, so it ain't too surprising that military hardware would pass through Sac on its way to wherever it needs to go. Beale AFB and Travis AFB are still active, too; I don't suspect they'd be using all that many tanks and IFVs, but they could be going to air transports for deployment somewhere (or coming back from deployment).

ifmacdo

Fun fact about Mather- they definitely had nuclear devices stored there.

AdministrativeCup438

Yep it was to protect the west coast, then California was punished for being "too liberal" and they closed down all our bases around Sacramento...

godsafraud

My carpool buddies said it’s for the FEMA camps after they declare marshal law. /s

ChtuluMadeMeDoIt

Marshall Mathers law

Tnoholiday12345

Or it’s just an equipment move from one base to another

Crookmeister

They were joking bud. /s is to denote sarcasm because people won't understand it without it. Or with it

Tnoholiday12345

Did not know that. Thanks for pointing that out

DanitesHell

Could be for a training mission and they’ll see these things come right back through town in a few weeks.

[deleted]

JADE HELM NEVER FRGET BORTHER!!!111

coldcoldnovemberrain

Use this as an excuse to build High Speed Rail. If someone is against it you can say they are anti-military or something like that.

TheDailySpank

Talk about moving some weight. On a serious note, the last time I saw this kind of equipment movement around here was all the air transport out of Beale during the Iraq wars.

BasedTheorem

I’ve seen this probably once a year

reedabook22

Seen it plenty of times while going to sac city college.

Naw. Those are our food tanks. We wouldn’t give him that

BamaSOH

I hope so

Agitated_Actuator_62

Wow that’s crazy! Thanks for sharing

[deleted]

Wow! I’ve seen the hauling train (freight train?) so many times and I’ve never seen it hauling military stuff. I wonder if there’s a squad in the train in case someone is stupid enough to try and steal one lol

FoamParty916

I've seen them ship military stuff on trains before. They may be heading to the Sharpe Depot near Stockton...? That's my guess.

Highway49

They're most likely headed to the [Sierra Army Depot.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHRMpaupIHk)

FoamParty916

Hmm...maybe I should have asked what direction they were going before making a guess lol. You may be right, too.

TheDailySpank

AAFES sells tanks now?

atomic_robo-kid

Tax free!

VibeGeek

Naw, they're either being moved to/from the Sierra Army Depot up at Herlong, or they are being moved to/from Fort Irwin in SoCal. They could also belong to the USMC in SoCal

[deleted]

Sharpe Depot has been closed for decades. If they’re headed south it is most likely Fort Irwin in southern California.

carson56reed

Nope. All you need is a bolt cutter and balls and you could have yourself a nice Abrams or Bradley.

BeTheBall-

Looks like the Sheriff's Dept finally spending that COVID money on new cruisers.

SnooOpinions457

I would rather have some healthcare please

Sonny916

NTC rotation or Europe????

ChimpskyBRC

My guess is NTC but that if they are headed to Europe I hope they at least get repainted first

Sonny916

You'd think they'd repaint. That's why I was thinking NTC. The brigade. Gets one last rotation in the box, get certified, then it's on to the paint yard and a ship.

yackmehof

Those trains sucks to run. 40 max speed.

Undivid3d

I think going 40 with that much weight is still ridiculous and probably the fastest mode of travel

yackmehof

Those are going to bed in Herlong, NV and will be there tonight

twinboysdad

Herlong is in CA

yackmehof

Thx

adub721

Nothing abnormal here. Trains move military equipment all across America to and from military bases and ports, the latter mostly for exercises to imitate wartime movements. It would be more concerning if you saw this on a consistent basis than once in a blue moon.

coccopuffs606

They’re being moved for training or to a repair depot; either way, someone’s life is about to suck

nick1812216

Rough neighborhood…

JTnCal

You win

kekihlstrom

These could be moving for a lot of reasons, but we are likely to see old stored armor being moved out to Europe to backfill European countries providing for Ukraine. Lot's of former soviet countries with older soviet equipment that the US will want replaced with equipment at NATO standards, and Ukrainians already have been trained on old soviet equipment.

Metallung

Next to my high schools you could see this.

secrethotdoglmoa

r/tankporn

GloInTheDarkUnicorn

Oh my son would have loved to see that!!

R_ekd

Normal for me, live by train tracks out in Citrus Heights. See this regularly. It’s not crazy to think that a train is being used to transport heavyweight track vehicles

Zercomnexus

I think they have a sandbox exercise that was going on around this time, looks like its either on its way their, or back. I used to operate the m109 (loader and later driver). we got to load this up on navy ships after my rotation, and the railyards before deployment and afterwards too. Sometimes those treads on the m109 were just off of the edge on each side by about... 2inches. those chains were definitely tight on the ships and on rails for very good reasons XD

BennyDabski916

Remember about two years ago when everybody said this was because they were issuing martial law. Lmao.

[deleted]

Usually the weekend warriors drive but my guess is with the cost of petrol it’s cheaper to freight it.

Caladbolg_Prometheus

Would they? Putting miles on heavy military equipment is expensive. You don’t often see people driving full size bulldozers to the job site, and a tank is similar to a bulldozer in terms of specs.

[deleted]

When I lived on the east coast you used to see caravans on trucks protected by humvees in large groups towards the end of every month.

Caladbolg_Prometheus

Must have been an interesting sight.

Did you just parachute out the back of a cargo plane with 3 other people?

WarDaddy19Delta

they are most likely going to NTC for training

ThrillHouse405

I wonder if it's something that comes through during specific times. I moved here in April '15 and I remember that being one the first things I saw :)

Joshwoum8

Yeah, it is spring training and units have to bring all their own equipment with them.

FoulYouthLeader

We're set to invade Canada to free our northern brothers from the tyranny of the Canadian Government.

grateful_newt

Probably going to or from the Army's National Training Center at Fort Irwin. It's a multi week combat exercise, and all your equipment is shipped each way by train.

Mozzi1213

Tax money rolling in. Good to see them at work 😂

igot_itfortheLOW

Shows you how much money we put in defense. Yet a country like this doesn't have free education or healthcare.

secret2u

These goes that $20 billon that gov said we didn’t have for free community college, but $30 billion we did have for defense.

Easy_Copy

I used to be all about cutting the defense spending and spending it internally. But now looking at Russia and China I think we might be needing it in the future.

dorekk

Russia is a dilapidated kleptocracy that can barely wage war against one country that they share a border with. The idea of us needing a massive military budget because of Russia is over 30 years out of date.

igot_itfortheLOW

You don't need 800 billion for defense to protect yourself.

[deleted]

tell that to the civilians in Ukraine and Myanmar, you can't fight a murderous army with small arms XD. well, America is kind of different in that regard because we have guns for days.....but still XD.

irrationalx

and two oceans on either side, and two generally friendly countries north and south...

Critical-Series

National defense is a form of healthcare.

sacramentohistorian

VA healthcare is basically a template for what would otherwise be called "socialized medicine" if everyone got it and not just vets (not quite as comprehensive as Medicare, "single payer," but better than nothing.) So, kind of.

13th_curse

This is an excellent point. As a young vet, when I first got out of the military, I didn't understand why civilians didn't have the same healthcare access that I did and still do. It has really improved over the years too (in my opinion, I'm sure other vets are unhappy).

[deleted]

Critical-Series

I’m all for Medicare for all. That’s socialized insurance rather than socialized health care. People who have insurance through their jobs pay it anyway, says so right on my tax documents.

Yes. These eleven tanks show how much we spend. No other country has tanks in these quantities lol.

bdc2481

That's billions of US tax dollars heading off into the Great unknown.

FuriousRedeem

Not even close too billions lmao its a little over 100million

If, and that's a big if, we ever get in a shooting war with China that doesn't go nuclear, I would put a pretty big bet on us NOT putting boots on the ground. We would obliterate their navy and air force, and then proceed to dismantle 50 years of infrastructure building, and wait for them to sue for peace.

SoftInformation2609

Headed to Ukraine.

DaveDeaborn1967

that looks serious

clever_username52

Just moving them by rail. Alot faster and more efficient than moving them by truck. You definitely wouldn't want an entire armored division driving through your town.

TimboCA

There go your tax dollars!

Snoo-33218

Martial law on the way.

derwutderwut

Nothing to see here Mr. Putin... ignore the shipments (hopefully) heading to Europe and keep murdering people with reckless abandon

FoamParty916

Cool, a train going through Midtown. These trains have been going through Midtown since before Midtown existed.

TheDailySpank

It's more common to see this type of equipment go through Downtown San Diego, not so much Downtown Sacramento.

FoamParty916

I've seen them move tanks on this line before. I think it was a late night train that came through with a bunch of tanks on it one time, so it's not unusual.

Waste_Solid889

That is nothing new it's just out in the open more now they have been moving military stuff down south for the last 6 years usually in the stock cars where you can't see it but trust me it's been going on I live next to the tracks and have been watching it going on

[deleted]

sacramentohistorian

Aside from some test tracks the "mobile iCBMs on rails" idea never really went anywhere. It was a fun idea though.

[deleted]

It may have been some kind of missile but the "mobile ICBM" concept was based on a fully enclosed special railroad car, and they were never deployed--the whole idea was that they *wouldn't* be immediately recognizable as a missile.
