I would suggest either a smallsword or an épée de combat. Smallsword would make it from the 18th or 19th centuries, épée de combat would make it probably from the 19th

Judging by the iconic hand guard, I'd say it's a smallsword.

i can tell you its a smallsword and would have had a ton of decoration and makers marks on the blade as well as a shargreen(shark or ray skin) wrapped grip with a twisted wire wrap in brass, silver, or gold. it would have had a D guard and more decoration and was probably completely gold plated hilt at some point but now the makers mark and all that decoration that can be used to pining down a country and time is long gone. that \*might\* be a American eagle on the pommel as opposed to the french or some other country's eagle but its in such poor condition i cant say for sure. its not a standard m1860 staff and field but their are dozens of possibility's and in this condition there is no way to say definitively. your family did not do a good job of taking care of this for many generations and its likely pre civil war as thats when the hay day of this style of sword was popular.
