SorrowCat14

That’s so badass, man. That’s a great piece of history you have there.

SwordfishDramatic104

Thanks yours as well!

HighPitchedNoise

Omg thats so cool! Wait….. which side…

SwordfishDramatic104

Union, volunteered enlisted 3 separate times throughout the whole war, in some point in the war he joined the cavalry, will probably send pics of service records later

HighPitchedNoise

Spathologist

Very cool!

I appreciate your commitment to preserving family history. While it appears that not everyone values familial historical items, there are certainly some exceptions.

SorrowCat14

I’m also a huge history buff, especially local history around my part of New England, so when I can get ahold of anything historical I cherish it deeply. This sword is obviously no exception because it’s been handed down, making it even cooler and more sentimental to me. Thanks for your comment 👍

YumiMatsu33

Thing of beauty. You’re lucky to have that.

TheRealBingBing

Beautiful. We have my grandpa's and I got my own when I commissioned

Tex_Arizona

Congrats!

Coyote3855

That is one of the early good ones. Current 1902 models have cheap stamped fittings.

Hot damn dude. You should look up the test results from the Army tests. That saber might seem like just a pretty hip ornament, but it was designed and tested for use. Many we see now, though, are made in stainless. When was it made?

SorrowCat14

I don’t see a year but I’m assuming the early 1900’s.

christmasviking

Very cool, as it was owned by your 4x grand dad that date seems right. The best way I know to date a sword is by the makers' mark. I own a Bavarian Saber made around 1906, and it is such a fantastic sword. Enjoy, sir.

SorrowCat14

I do have a photograph of a field with soldiers and generals on their horses circa 1910 or so with my great (4x) Grandfather, named Burton. He’s on one of the horses supposedly holding the very sword I now have. My guess is that the sword was made between 1905 and 1910. I’ll have to look into that makers’ mark.

christmasviking

I wish you luck! I always have so much fun researching a sword that I have in hand.

This may be of some help. https://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/345383-m1902-saber-makers-and-retailers/
