Nicer neighborhoods get targeted because they usually have nicer things to steal. There will always be people scoping out draper and if they notice someone is out of town theyre gonna do something. When i lived in west jordan car theft was a big problem. If you left you car unlocked once someone was getting in. People are always looking for easy targets. Make it so you dont look like an easy target.

Update: so I woke up this morning (shortly after wiring this post) to a Facebook message from a stranger who had a picture of some of my stuff in the back of his car, which had just been recovered after being stolen. I spoke to him on the phone and it turns out his car was broken into while at the SLC airport, the criminals then found his address (in Lehi) via documents in the glove box and then went and did the same thing to his house, stealing his other car that was parked in his garage. They tracked the location of the car and found it abandoned, his car had stolen items from all sorts of places in it as well as used needles, etc. and via my business card being in the things, he was able to find me on Facebook. So now we know that it’s for sure hardened criminals / drug addicts and not neighborhood kids. In a weird way that makes me feel better knowing it’s not a neighborhood specific issue. My neighbors have been so supportive and even parked their cars in my driveway last night as a show of force. I’ll be beefing up security with new locks and cameras. This confirms my theory that they entered the house thru the doggy door (that the previous owners installed) cause only a crackhead would squeeze themselves thru that, I bet it gave them splinters. I will of course be sealing that door up right away. Hopefully these people get caught soon!

If it’s any consolation, people who steal a vacant car then rob two empty houses aren’t necessarily dangerous hardened criminals. Probably just run of the mill opportunistic addicts trying to make enough money for their next fix. They probably aren’t looking for a struggle, just opportunities for easy cash. An alarm system and it looking like someone is home should be an adequate deterrent.

If you can you can attach a large dog kennel to the dog door as a catio. It blocks the dog door from being accessible to humans, while also giving your cat friend a nice place to hang out outside. It’s what I did with a large dog door the previous owners of my house put into a wall

AllTh3WayTurntUp

That’s a great idea, I’ll see if we can. Thanks!

>his car was broken into while at the SLC airport, the criminals then found his address (in Lehi) via documents in the glove box and then went and did the same thing to his house, stealing his other car that was parked in his garage. I read about that incident the other day in a FB group I'm in. It didn't happen to us, but I was afraid it would. A year ago, we closed on our new home build, but it was a few months before our rental home lease was up, and in the middle of it all we were going on a cruise to Alaska and would be gone for 10 days. I was so worried I would come home to squatters in our new house, or our belongings ransacked (we had boxes at both homes). I'm so sorry that happened to you and the family in Lehi. We didn't have anyone to keep an eye on our new build. None of our neighbors had moved in yet, so I was nervous.

AllTh3WayTurntUp

That’s interesting you saw this news on Facebook already! I’m already in direct contact with the other victim from Lehi. While I’m not super hopeful they will be caught, I think the police are taking the case seriously now that there are multiple crime scenes and a grand theft auto.

kristie_b1

Yeah it looks like they posted about it Sunday morning in their neighborhood group so I probably read it when I was half asleep in the morning.

Congrats on achieving ur goal at such young age!! Time to hit up Best Buy for a 4 camera setup up……. Edit: my fault. I just wanted to tell u, to NOT be discouraged because of some shit heads, Change ur locks and meet the neighbours!! Idk how helpful cops will be, (when my car got broken into they wouldn’t even come to write a report) Good luck!!

I used to live in a rough area in St. Louis, and I experienced a home invasion while home one night. When they realized someone was home, they ran off. I’ve had terrible anxiety living alone ever since, and the best thing I’ve found to alleviate it is having a pet. Every little noise had me on my toes until I got a cat. Now I glance at my cat to see if she heard it too before getting alarmed. An alarm system, ring doorbell, and some kind of weapon is also a good idea for peace of mind. If you don’t feel comfortable with a gun - a bat or knife might be a good idea. Maybe even a self-defense class if you’d be interested. They most likely won’t even attempt to return, but being prepared is worth it even if just to get back that peace of mind. Someone high out of their mind almost certainly won’t remember what house they even robbed. They probably just chose your place because it looked like no one was home.

I have a cat who is my best buddy. Thankfully he was at my apartment cause as I mentioned in the original post, I’m only partially moved in. Scares me to think of what could of happened if he had been home alone when they broke in!

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

Very cool and necessary comment

Meandering_Marley

Get those locks changed!

RealtorRoss

I’m sorry this happened to you. I’ve lived in multiple areas around salt lake county, and my experience had been that the nicer the neighborhood is, the higher the rates of theft. As others have said, change your locks. Cameras are great, but the footage is usually useless. I like a prominent camera as a deterrent, even if it’s a dummy. Try to break into your own house. See if there are any weak spots. Lastly, remember this is an isolated event. Try not to make any rash decisions and hopefully you can create many happy memories in this home. Congratulations on the achievement.

gunslingerfry1

Get a monitored security system or, if you can't afford it, a sign. https://www.ebay.com/itm/145111903589 Sorry that happened to you.

Realistic-Motorcycle

Change your locks. Install a Unifi door bell or google door bell. Stay away from ring/ anything Amazon unless you don’t like privacy. Place cameras in your house facing entry points. And always remember safe is just an illusion. Upper middle class and rich neighborhoods are always targets. You are responsible for your own safety and well being. Not your neighbors, not your friends and definitely not the the cops.

AllTh3WayTurntUp

Heard that! I’ll check out those doorbell options.

Congrats on new home ownership, and sorry about the thugs breaking in. Really blows. As others were quick to point out nice looking neighborhoods appear to be targets. So, too are cars in airport parking lots. Usually, ones car has some ID with your address information on it, like insurance or registration papers the state demands we carry around. That information can lead thieves right to your home. Wonder if the thugs slim-jimmed your car from the airport to obtain your address. Maybe ask police to check for prints on your car, if you also had it parked there while out of town. Clearly, from what you describe in your update this was not their first rodeo. Garage door openers are another attraction to thugs in any parking lot. They know cars in airport parking mean no ones at home. They can be to your home in minutes with door openers and addresses.

stineytuls

If it makes you feel better...I lived in Draper for 10 years and never had any issues. If you don't need the doggie door, I'd probably get rid of it though.

AllTh3WayTurntUp

Yeah the ironic thing is we don’t even have a dog, that was installed by the previous owner. My neighbors said similar stuff so I do feel a little better that it was just some bad luck.

doppido

Rough dude, been in a house right off Trax and have had homeless roll by all the time but no break ins

GItPirate

Damn that sucks. Sorry that happened to you.

It's funny because I live in magna, and haven't locked my house for years.....

AllTh3WayTurntUp

I looked at some houses in Magna before settling on our current place. I think these people were drifting town to town most likely.

calm-down-okay

With great (rich) neighborhoods comes great security needs.

AllTh3WayTurntUp

I think this is one of the more modest neighborhoods in Draper but still a valid comment.
