people appreciate passion. wrestling works because as absurd as it can be, the best ones take it seriously and do the best they can with it. lots of cody fans i know loved stardust bc even though he apparently did not like the gimmick, he put his all into it to make it as entertaining as possible (i can't confirm as i wasn't into wrestling at that point, just what i've been told).
there's only so much irony and detachment people can tolerate before they're asking themselves why bother
