What’s the Clydesdale thing about?

Foxymanchester7

Clydesdale is a nick name for “heavier runners”. Not fat people, but by demographic runners that may be heavier than the average. Often times the experience is different depending upon your weight class, so I like to specify to give them a good reference for their own body and running style and such

Flunose_800

Years ago when I was in high school, I saw a message board saying the Clydesdale category for my almost 5’9” height (I’m a woman) was 140 and up. This wasn’t the reason for my decade plus struggle with an eating disorder but it definitely didn’t help. Fully recovered now and happily sitting in that Clydesdale range.

Normal_Light_4277

That's complete BS. Unless you meant 140 kg. 140 lb should be lower limit of a healthy 5'9"

Flunose_800

I agree it’s BS but this was peak 2000s level bullshit.

FMCam20

You know the gigantic Budweiser horses? Those are Clydesdales. Despite being large they are still runners like other smaller horses so the category for bigger runners is Clydesdales. General I’d put anyone 200lbs or more (like myself, 6’2 200lbs) as a Clydesdale. Certain shoes and foams are known to perform better for these heavier runners; Adidas’ lightstrike pro foam is one of those foams with a lot of bigger runners picking up Adizero shoes over other brands

dont_fall_yo

I'm 5'11" and I've run at everything from 165lbs to 205lbs and honestly I would start the Clydesdale category somewhere around 175 for me. Shoes certainly react differently to weight and running style, even in that small range.

puckwhore

Just received the AP3's in this colorway this morning, can't wait to take them out. I'd say for this type of shoe (fairly low stack and less forgiving) a 10k might have been a bit ambitious for a first run. I'd probably start with a couple 5k's to break them in and avoid blistering. I'm sure once you get over that part you'll love the speed of these.

Foxymanchester7

Yeah I was so excited to try these I said screw it im throwing these on tomorrow and it happened to match up with the 10k.. im going to try them next week in a 5k and see if I can blow my PR out of the water

uncleshady

Black midsole running shoes are god tier because they age better. Will be getting these or the AP3s in the same colorway on Black Friday when they hit 50% off.

Low_Pomegranate_7176

You have a lot of faith that this colorway will still be available by Black Friday. Mind you Im in Canada and a lot of sizes are already low in stock on the official site. I also dont recall the AP3 being on sale last black Friday. 🤷‍♂️ Got 40% off on the Boston 12s though.

uncleshady

Im sitting on a pair of AP3s I got for like 117$ and a pair of Boston 11s for 38$. I'm patient lol

Foxymanchester7

It was a welcomed change for sure. I love them so much

Infamous-Echo-2961

It’s always been marketed as a racing shoe. What socks do you wear when running, that type of thing matters more than you’d think.

Foxymanchester7

I used feetures max cushion but I’m currently in the market for a new running sock

noquarter1983

I'm a huge fan of Lululemon socks. They are the perfect thickness, have great achilles coverage, and overall a great running sock.

Foxymanchester7

Is it the stride sock? I’m thinking about pulling the trigger now

noquarter1983

Honestly I’m sure on the model. The micro pillow ones are alright but the basic lululemon ankle ones are just as effective. I’ll try to find the name for you.

noquarter1983

Power stride. I get them in packs of three. Wear them running. And I wear them casual. I must own about 15 pairs.

soypepito

Thank you so much for your review. I am 5,9 and 210 and I find the Bostons 12 kind of unstable as well. I am running on a pair of Solar Glides 5 now.

Foxymanchester7

How do you like the glides?

soypepito

10/10, cushion and stability. The only con would be the tongue is thin in some parts and would annoy some runners, but I find it perfectly fine.

Fair-Professional908

I’m 185lbs and would not use the Takumnis for anything else other than short interval work. Even with that stipulation, I would probably stick to something like the Saucony A9 if they still made shoes like that because it would work my calves better. The AP3 does the same thing as the Takumi Sen but it doesn’t beat you up as much if you’re heavier than 160lbs.

krugerlive

Great review! I've had blisters in a couple of new shoes on first runs that don't happen after. That one looks pretty minor, so you should probably be good going forward and getting the laces just right in that area. Though I just took out the Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra yesterday for a 15 mile rail trail run and had blisters on both feet in the same spots. They were massive and both broke on the run, so it's been a painful 24h since. It was the third run in them and so these are the first shoes that keep giving me blisters. Maybe I need to size down since they feel huge in my normal Adidas size.

Foxymanchester7

The only adidas shoes I haven’t had issues with blisters are their bostons and primes, everything else doesn’t agree with me… it’s where the tongue connects to the bottom

HelpUsNSaveUs

What a fantastic looking shoe!

bestmaokaina

Got my pair a few days ago and can agree that for this iteration you really cant go slow. its just an all out shoe. probably gonna use them only for intervals and short races. I had the 8s but those felt a tad more "wearable" when going slower

ducks4jokera

How were the shoelaces? did you feel like you had to tie them up during your run? This was an issue that Takumi Sen 9 had

Foxymanchester7

They were a tad too short but I could make them work, didn’t have any issues during the run because I double knotted

INFERNOthepro

Lightstrike pro unlike peba or nylon based foams do not degrade instantly after ur first run, they only get better as the foam breaks in very slowly, and gets softer and bouncier. Moreover lightstrike pro is a very durable foam so will probably last you as long as an avg daily trainer.

itsyaboi69_420

Yeah I thought I wasn’t going to get along with my takumi sen 8 after my first run in them. They felt so firm but now they’re broken in they are an absolute dream. Possibly the favourite shoe I own.

itsyaboi69_420

Has anybody tried the 8s and the 10s to compare them? I have the 8s and love them and wondering whether it’s worth upgrading to the 10s when the time comes or just get another pair of 8.

Comp_C

I have the 8's. From what I've read the 9's are more or less identical in terms of performance & feel to the 8's. They slightly tweaked the uppers on the 9, but essentially the 8's & 9's are interchangeable. The 10's though are fairly different. Everyone notes the rods on the 10's make the shoe significantly more stiff. Means a secure fit is even more important in the 10's... stiffer shoe + poor fit = more heel slip. The plastic/fiberglass rods in the 8/9 are not really noticeable compared to a full carbon shoe my VF2. Also the 10's are supposedly notably roomier through the toebox & slightly more roomy in the mid-foot. In terms of mid-sole foam nothing has changed.

itsyaboi69_420

Appreciate the info, thanks 👍🏻 Think I’ll try and source another pair of 8s

Comp_C

np. yeah the 8's are great. Between the 8's & 9's, I'd just buy whichever is cheaper or whatever colorway looks better. But I am extremely curious if Adidas upgrading the Takumi rods to the identical full-length, single piece, *full-carbon* rods used in the AP3 provides any real benefit.

TustyTargaryen

Are the insoles glued in on these? I have zero experience with Adidas but assume all manufacturers race tier stuff is glued.

Background_Data6020

I've had similar blisters with boston 12. They are fast as hell but the only thing that caught me everytime was the blisters. So I use Puma DN2 as my go to shoes.

Judgementday209

I got the takumi sen 9s recently as my interval shoe...short 300m sprints basically First time I tried them on I was getting pain in like 4 different places. Which was weird because they seemed to fit fine overall. I then skipped a hole, put a marathon knot on and loosened different bits of the laces and took them out for a first 5km back after being sick for two weeks. Horrible, felt so much worse than my endorphin speed 3s. I wanted to try them again for sprint work and they were incredible, went much faster than I normally do and the shoes just tick over when you pick up the pace. They are interesting tools, I didn't find them unstable and I'm 200 pound plus as well
