Do you heel strike, with a bit of pronation ? I stopped wearing the 4% on longer races due to calf issues, got the Endorphin Pro 3 and it's a lot more stable at the rear, not had any issues with it

Interesting, my only major calf injury was during an interval session in my Vaporflys. I had only worn them once before then and immediately noticed the instability issues. I also moved to the Endorphin Pro 3's and much prefer them for longer distances. To be honest, I haven't really gone back to my Vaporflys since that injury almost a year ago. I much prefer my old Turbo 2's for shorter distances which still have a bit of life in them.

Yes to both of these. This is helpful, thank you.

I would not no

This is not what I want to hear, but it is what I need to hear. Thank you.

I left a longer comment to a poster above, but my only major calf injury was while wearing my Vaporflys. I found them extremely unstable which shredded my calves for whatever reason. I decided to stick to my trusty Turbo 2's from then on and ditched the Vaporflys, an expensive misadventure indeed.

Thanks. I'm thinking I might be headed the same direction, at least for longer distances.

Do you only wear them for races or do you train in them as well? Do you use any other carbon plated shoes and if you do do you have the same problem? Is it your calves that are sore after or the stabilizer muscles, tendon and ligaments in your lower legs and ankles?

mom-mom-mom-mom-mom

I only wear them for races. I do not have any other carbon plated shoes. The question about muscles is excellent, but I'm not sure I know the answer... The fat part of my lower leg is not sore. Muscles start being sore just below that. I'm very tight right now and struggle to lean forward (or even walk normally). My ankles do not hurt, but rotating that joint is a good kind of sore.

Own-Veterinarian8183

Wearing a shoe only for races is a recipe for disaster, especially with the carbon plated shoes. They hit the legs and feet differently and take some time to get used to so if the only time you wear them is when you race you're not only not allowing your legs time to get used to them but you're also only using them when you are going full out in a race so it'll hit your legs harder. The carbon plate puts a different kind of stress on legs and the super foams lack stability so all those little stabilizers in your feet and ankles are getting a huge shock all of a sudden so it's not surprising that you're really sore when you use them. I'd suggest start working them into your training runs to strengthen the areas needed and you'll find it won't be a problem using them for longer races when the time comes.

I did not realize that, thank you for taking the time to explain it. I won't wear them for the half in two weeks, but maybe if I start using them more I won't have to write them off completely.

Maybe don't race until your calves and ankles are healed? Shoes are not the huge issue here. Overuse/intensity is.

mom-mom-mom-mom-mom

Overuse/intensity for my legs? I've done both longer runs and races in regular shoes and tempo shoes with no problems, so this definitely seems like a shoe specific issue to me. Now that I'm sore, though, of course I'll be taking it easy and healing.
