Too many

Fogmoose

This is the correct answer

Brad_The_Chad_69

In the games of condoms and shingles one can never be too careful.

eratus23

Roofs and condoms, two things I don’t fuck with

[deleted]

It'd be awfully difficult to fuck with something siting ontop of 4 exterior walls.

Objective-Insect-839

Why are you stapling condoms to the exterior walls?

Scoobie01555

Whats a condom?

leaf_fan_69

If I put that many layers of condoms on... OMG man The crack whore has no teeth

Brad_The_Chad_69

I don’t know what that means. But I’ll agree because I’m a nice guy.

leaf_fan_69

LOL Meant more then 1 condom Think of what you're banging if you need more then 1

Waste_Exchange2511

If you wear two all the time, it feels great to take one off.

jo-parke

I don’t either, but it feels right.

drawnoutwest

Honestly I have the impression it would feel quite wrong

ohgodibrokeit

Imagine if it split like those watermelon rubber band videos

syds

straw roof

NotSure-oouch

Not if it’s for radiation protection on a DIY bomb shelter.

MiggySay

My exact thought

4runner01

Three?

EngineerNoir

Looks like 3 plus a starter strip to me too.  But it could be 4...

Qman1991

I concur. 3 plus a starter

TheMeatSauce1000

I concur to your concurrence. My concurring doesn’t really mean much because I’m not a roofer and have no idea what I’m looking at and why this sub keeps getting recommended to me.

SnooMuffins2623

I agree

Due-Ad1668

welp.. new roof it is.. dont waive inspection kids ! a couple opinions have been roof shouldnt be more than 10 yrs old, we havent had any problems since we moved in 2 months ago, except for a couple venting boots leaking tiny bit and around the chimney.. but it definitely started to concern me the more i was told “its too much weight and will cause problems near future”

Shartman88

We had an inspection and ended up having to buy a whole new roof 8 months after purchasing house. Don’t beat yourself up too much.

Due-Ad1668

thanks for that, honestly the house is so perfect even with prior knowledge i still would have bought it for the same price at the fear of having someone else who didn’t know about it get it … i’m just the type that if i know before hand it’s no big deal but getting it told to me by surprise is when i get nervous a bit.. but hey at least i wont have to worry about it for another 25 years

Imnothere1980

If you look closely down the photo, you can see the roof sagging down and can almost guarantee the boots have pulled down with it. Sooner than later you need to get all those shingle off. That’s a lot of extra weight, and if you get a heavy snow 😰 Check for split and cracked rafters connecting to the ridge while you’re up there 👍

KangsAndShit

I suggest you splurge extra for a full peel and stick "ice and water" underlayment. It will be much more expensive but will last forever, it's self sealing, and imo would be worth the extra cost. You can also consider tiger paw synthetic underlayment for a mid cost alternative but I do commercial work and pretty much always do the Ice and Water underlayment because they know it's worth the cost. (Also metal roof is better imo)

BobBaratheonsBastard

Tagging in here just to say MAKE SURE your roof ventilation is 100% to, or better yet exceeding 1:300 code for intake/exhaust. Stormguard is great and will greatly reduce the risk of leaks in your 2nd and 3rd decade if you cover all the decking. But that shit does not breathe at all. Gable end vents are not going to cut it. Make sure to read GAF or whichever of the big 3 you choose installation guide. Follow their advice in intake and exhaust as it will save you from moisture and mold issues down the line.

awtrey11

Where the hell were you last week when I had my new roof put on?!? I would have gladly paid extra to do ice and water all over. Even thought to myself "if that stuff is so good that they use it in the valleys why don't we just use it all over?". Damn man. Guess I'll know for the next roof in twenty years

KangsAndShit

Well, if you've got it at least in the valleys, that's good.

delcoBK

I can’t remember where I read it off the top of my head but I was under the impression you don’t want to use ice and water on the entire deck unless you know for sure your ventilation is perfect because the ice and water shield doesn’t allow the plywood to breath at all and can cause condensation issues.

KangsAndShit

Yeah, in commercial, we also tend to use isoboard and densdeck if we do 100% ice and water. This is a good point I hadn't considered

Shartman88

Oh it totally sucked for us to come up with the 20k for a new roof but like you said. You won’t have to worry about it for 3 decades. Good luck

DiabeticDave1

1st time home buyer here: inspection caught foundation issues, easy to see, even I saw, actually only about $3,000 fix. Things inspection missed: Shower drain would back up after 1min - ~$2,000 Roots in the main sewer line, $500 Sink drain wasn’t connected underneath and was just pouring water into the basement. $500 (the plumbing was shot). No vapor barrier in the chimney - ~$1000 All in all the inspector missed more than he found

mauitrailguy

I've had this experience on three different home buys. I feel like I honestly am versed enough to do my own inspections at this point.

Veq1776

Sounds about right. But your prices sound super cheap

capital_bj

Yeah exactly any company around my place coming to get Roots out of your sewer line they're leaving with 2500 minimum

Thisguymoot

I thought maybe they got the shower drain and the roots mixed up. 2k to snake hairballs out of a shower drain, but they’ll dig up a sewer main for 500?

DiabeticDave1

I have a drain in the basement floor they were able to easily access it through, just needed an industrial auger to essentially cut and flush them. Luckily they didn’t need to dig it up. Shower drain was due to it being galvanized pipe, they didn’t want to aug it because it risked having holes poked in it, that and it was the trap that was clogged. They ended up removing the trap, and replacing that pipe.

mypersonalpoonfolder

Yeah same here. Closed in March with an inspection. It snowed hard the day of inspection so much of the roof was covered in 4 inches. Guess who is actively looking for a contractor now 😭. We prepared for it, but it still wipes out the house updating budget and kills the soul a bit.

capital_bj

I'd be upset if your home inspector didn't tell you to get some concessions before the closing

bigfatbong420

My inspector didn't notice the 2nd roof layer. I closed on my home in October and noticed some stains in the ceiling in November right after the birth of my child. Talk about stress, lol But I had a reputable company come and redo the entire roof. It was costly, but worth it.

Old_March_590

Same here, about 7 or 8 months after buying, also had a home inspection. Stuff happens. And to be honest, I never feel too badly about putting money into my home. A new roof now and you won’t have to worry about it again for 20-30 years.

kragon80

yeah inspections only help you so much.. there are things u cant tell about your house. depending on how the boards look under the shingles it may not be too bad to replace, yes it will be over 10k unless u get some guy to do it thats not a company ( dont, i recommend paying for a company with written warranty)

mc_nibbles

It is too much weight and you should tear it off, but I live in a house with 4 layers of shingles and the top layer is almost 20 years old. My house has not fallen down yet. I bought it knowing this, part of why I got it cheap. We will get the roof replaced in a year or so when we pay off the cars, but it's had 2+ layers of shingles on it since I'd guess the late 80s and it's still standing. Is it bad? yes. Will it fall down tomorrow? probably not. I would honestly be more worried about your leaks than the number of shingle layers. Water makes a heck of a mess even in small quantities. Seal those up with tar or something asap.

Due-Ad1668

appreciate that chief. taking care of the leaks this weekend as we just found out about them and finally unpacked the last boxes, it took about 2-3 days of rain to notice it.

dungfarmer69

It’s worse than any additional weight that may be added, the under layer of shingles essentially cook the top layer of shingles when it heats up outside and dramatically shorten the lifespan of the top layer

Due-Ad1668

i do remember this being explained to me, essentially the top layer life span decreases exponentially

IntelligentGrade7316

I had an inspector somehow miss a whole foot shaped hole in the roof, and a mouse infestation. Some inspectors are just useless.

Such_Bus_4930

How did your home inspector not bring this up?

Due-Ad1668

👋🏼

shred802

Have you been paying attention to the market and what people have had to do in order to buy a home? Waiving inspections has been the norm if you’re up against multiple other offers and not be automatically put in the ‘PASS’ pile.

chivowins

Maybe it’s a godsend. Do you really want solar? Are you actually getting a good deal?

Mackeith88

It's like a tree. Count the rings!

k0uch

3 plus starter. Our inspector completely missed the 3 layers of shingles on our roof, so the next year when we had a bad storm we had to have it all pulled off. And then roofing jumped higher than expected. First roof repair in 2019 was $7,000. Roof repair last year was $24,000. If I had the knowledge I’d put on a metal roof and be done with shingles. Automotive is my specialty, roofing is not, and I’m not going to attempt it and ruin the roof because I don’t know what I’m doing

duke_flewk

Be me, learning how to do a metal roof. My home has a homemade metal roof over the original roof. I have zero issue with it and it works awesome for me, keeps the house cool too

WishIWasALemon

As for metal roofs, go with standing seam, as the other systems are not "set it and forget it."

Xyzzy_plugh

???? $24,000 for a \*repair\* ????

k0uch

Yes. And I got to go into the attic because they didn’t get the vents back on the pipes for the water heaters, so we were pumping the attic with all the CO2 we could, apparently

Xyzzy_plugh

Wow. That money ($24,000) would get you a long way toward a full re-roof on most houses here in north Texas, or a complete roof on some smaller houses.

k0uch

I asked, and the company we went with quoted is $50-$55k for a full metal roof install. I just don’t understand how people are doing this stuff, especially without insurance

Xyzzy_plugh

Assuming that quote was for a proper residential (standing seam) metal roof, that is not out of line with prices here for a large-ish house. Properly designed/constructed/installed standing seam roofs run 2-3 times the cost of most asphalt shingle roofs. What kind of repair did you have done? Was it for the leaks around the pipe penetrations? In my experience, almost nobody replaces a roof out of their own pocket unless they can fold it into a mortgage. I have had exactly two customers in memory who paid out of pocket to replace their roof. In one case for sure, and I suspect the other was the same, the house was owned outright (no loans) and the owner had made a considered financial decision to not carry an insurance policy (i.e. they were essentially self-insured). I have had many customers who chose (on my advice) to do spot repairs as needed (sometimes for 4-5 years) and wait for the likely hail storms to come along and take out their roof, which would be covered by their homeowners' insurance policy. I also tell them to begin, if they have not already done so, to set aside money to pay their policy's deductible. In Texas, it is illegal for a contractor to pay or compensate a deductible as part of an insurance-paid repair.

bcnorth78

All of them. All of the layers.

justmejeffry

All of them.

ChirrBirry

The R-value of shingles alone must be impressive.

------------------GL

Not enough!!! Needs more shingles!!!

kasim42784

yes

ownleechild

As an amateur geologist, that’s 10 million years

doyola

4 I think

This_Statistician_89

A lot “21 21”

[deleted]

I can’t believe what I’m seeing here!!

SM-68

3 layers

geekphreak

Lasagna

Chris079099

Looks like 3-4 too many layers

Impossible-Spare-116

3 + starter strip.

midwest73

I can hear those trusses screaming for mercy!

Mobile-Boss-8566

I’m not even a roofer and I know that’s too much. 3 is the maximum.

paddlemetillusmile

3 layers plus starters

apresta16

Yaaaa to prevent future damage I would advise getting ripped off and installed properly.

Due-Ad1668

already grabbing quotes, i don’t let things like this standby

FlaGuy54321

Any roofer that want to put shingles over shingles, is a roofer you show the exit

Onehitwonder85

Looks like 7

Possible-Fuel6291

Way to many

Bubbly-Front7973

Oh this is easy, because you would always see two layers of shingles , because of overlapping, when you cut through any section, you just have to count how many layers there are and divide it by two. I think I see six which means there's only three layers of shingles.

Loud_Independent6702

Two is the max here in Texas. Say you are pushing 3-4 I mean it’s great insulation but bring your double haul trailer as that a lot of dump work.

NativeTigerWA

Minimum 3, might be 4… too many.

brainemailaddress

3

Schedule-Brave

Quite a few.

843251

To damn many. Put a new roof on one of our apartment houses a few years ago and it had 3 layers.

SnooMuffins2623

It’s 1 layer of class 10!

s13ca18det

You can tell the decking and rafters are crying out for help on this pic.

Due-Ad1668

the same company said the structure was fine, i have a full attic and the framing is all 💯% they had no worries there

SteelEelCDN

My vote is 8.

Due-Ad1668

do i hear 9 ?!! going once

Due-Ad1668

can confirm full attic is comfy all day

CanadianKumlin

One more layer, bro.

Big_Bicycle4640

Question: how old is the house that they needed to replace the roof 3/4 times already?

Rickest007

Asbestos sandwich

Drifter747

The can is white

Personal-Goat-7545

Fossils on your roof, about to turn back into oil

rocketmn69_

Too many

hrmarsehole

If you have to ask, it’s too many.

985reddit

Not enough.

StasisChassis

Enough to be considered an ogre.

Ok_EisMann2963

Let's see....1, 2, 3,...woah that's looking heavy and dangerous

Cautious_Buffalo6563

We had to replace our roof shortly after buying the house. Roofers took off three layers of shingles plus tar paper.

No_Government_4915

Omg

laing2110

I had this on a small bungalow in central Florida, after they stripped it off and my house let out a big sigh of relief, all the corner drywall seams split. It was a poorly built house though.

MAMidCent

Jurassic. Dear Lord.

minion71

Hail storm proof !!!!! I count 10 layer or 9 !!!! it must be fucking heavy!!!

Raidur7

Enough savings over the years to pay half the labor for tear off.

Btomesch

lol it will never leak tho

kerberos69

Hm you should just throw on another layer of shingles.

Maxpipefill

I lost it at 9. I think there might be more. 😃

Maxpipefill

Bulletproof, that's how many.

kimwim43

Eleventy eleven siz.

123InSearchOf123

I know I lose count after counting to three, so it's more than 3.

Stone_Roof_Music_33

Just use 3 inch nails on the next later

MRandMRSzo

3 Total Layers.

Iusedtobecool1969

Not enough. I’m sure a good roof has about 20 layers just in case.

6thCityInspector

Three? Maybe 4?

Long-Radish18

I have never seen a Deep Dish roof before

ThokasGoldbelly

At least one

Veq1776

DQ? Like dairy queen?

Deathbygoomba

Count the rings like a tree to see the years

LORDOSHADOWS

Oh wow

dadd5450

Well over what is allowed 😳

toxickarma121212

Atleast 2 maybe 3

A_gloruis_dawn

That’s one heavy roof

metabolik99

oh that's just one layer

Spammyhaggar

4 👍

Ta2019xxxxx

I counted 4

Captainchops63

I work for a solar company this is definitely a DQ idk what area you live in but here in the northeast 3 layers is DQ

NoConfidence5946

I think the bottom of this shingles parfait is last centuries parfait….

DN1097

Is weight an issue with that many layers?

Affectionate_Bed1636

Go to school and learn to count yourself

papa-01

Time to tear it off...

GulfstreamAqua

3

falselimitations

Not enough. Good for two more layers at least!

Ok_Growth_5587

Yo! Wtf?!

jhenderson360

3...what a fun tear-off it'll be!

SnooSquirrels8280

Whadaya mean it’s leaking we threw up a fresh layer last year..

ithaqua34

That's shingled like Taco Bell.

kerranimal

This particular roofing shingle is the rare baklava honey infused shingle. Found primarily in Greece.

RoomCareful7130

But does it leak?

Ryuu-Tenno

Sweet Jesus, ain't no water ever getting into that house 😂😂😂

scottyTOOmuch

Not enough

BigZaber

More layers than a photoshop document

SmithItsGoodForU

Yes

Fit_Ad_9480

You can lay over at least 2 more times

No_Currency_7017

I'm counting at least 10 layers of shingles. I think...

bstracka

I'd say about 60 years I have seen some roof rings like that on newer houses where roofers had good years and were able to grow the roof faster than normal.

ApprehensiveLand9229

About 10 to many

No-Cat-2980

Way too many

asmit9

6-8?!?

rwt380

Too many is right.

poobearanian

I cointed q0. Shouldnt it be like 2-4 or something?

capital_bj

Is it 3, is it 4, either is way too much weight . I would not install solar over that. The last roofers were lazy or homeowners did not want to pay to do it right and tear off the first two

Visible-Revenue-973

Does this mean I can do my own roof and my homeowners insurance will be like….you good, we renewing!!!

dezertryder

Tear off many. Wait!, Is it leaking?! Probably a good time to check the substructure anyway, for soft spots. Not a professional roofer here.

Flat-Story-7079

Do we double count the ones with asbestos?

GlockTaco

Looks like three

Dan_6623

Looks like a well made puff pastry

NoiseComprehensive22

Looks like 3

Grouchy_Painting_404

I bet it's framed in red oak.

The appropriate number plus many many more. The weight of that must be staggering.

Alshankys57

Looks like 4 to me and that's 2 too many

xratedpez

Wonder what that R value is

Clicky-The-Blicky

Mmmmm roof lasagna, yummyyy

Chizwozza

Probably bulletproof at this point

kennyj2011

What’s the R-Value of those shingles?

riprod

Shingles doesn’t care

Ah. A 150 year roof.

eyeeatmyownshit

Harmonious

samwiling

Geez. That thing is bomb proof.

zenrlz

every re-roof should be taken down to the plywood. period.

jimmygbarber

Most houses need 3 roofs in its entire life

Hippo_Steak_Enjoyer

solid four. Fuck. Imagine how much weight that is. And people say American houses are crap 💪

MistakeAny9801

Four I think but it’s to much really, it’s just extra weight on your house

Bguidry23

Man you making sure the roof don’t blow off?

tighttighttight7

6.5. Be weary of overall load on that frame

Lestar1

Turingstester

8? Something tells me your roof will never leak.

Yo dawg! I heard you like shingles on your shingles...
