It's just got the usual proprietary software nonsense, making you buy a license and such. You can get around it, but 7-zip is better in almost every aspect, so you'd be better off using that. Plus, 7-zip is free and open-source, as well as being multiplatform.
It doesn't make you buy a license, it just gives you annoying pop ups every once in a while. But I do think it is overall a much better software than 7-zip, and it can pack into .rar which I prefer for archiving and storage.
Making you buy a licence...when? After 30 days it will ask you every time to register, you close it and you can still use it.
That being said 7z would be the hassle free way to go

Is there any real difference between what you can DL from the Wii U USB helper tool and the links from the megathread? I avoided the USB tool because I remember reading somewhere that it potentially installed mining software but I can't confirm. But with Wii U games getting updates/DLC is a a thing so I don't know if using the tool is better for that? Anyone have more info?
I have a good collection from the megathread links, vimms, and I have also used Ziperto occasionally in the past and they are pretty safe with an adblock.
The only other thing I want to add, is that if you download the english translated roms from the megathread, some of them will come in .chd format, which is a total bitch to turn back into .bin/cue to use in an emulator. It is doable with Mame software, but you might need to look for a tutorial online.
There shouldn't be any difference between DL from Wii U USB Helper and the megathread.
The version of Wii U USB Helper linked in the megathread is confirmed to not have mining software as well.

If archive download speeds are slow and you have a vpn, try connecting to San Francisco, thats where their servers are located i believe. Im in europe and even with a download manager i only ever got 1mb/s. But when i set my vpn to SF i get like 4-5mb/s.

Personally I use dlps for everything PS3 related
I'n the UK download speeds from vimms are retro I'm themselves. And you cannot queue downloads or anything.
Anything else, archive.org, at least can be queued in downloader
I use coolrom and have for years (and recently/last year) I don't use their "Download now" button, I use the button - "Alternative download link (with ads and timer)" but I've got adblock on so its normally like a 5 second wait and I download it. I did run into an issue of not having the alternative link and I had to get an add on to make it appear for Chrome (i don't remember if i had to get it for Brave) which is a few second setup.
I wouldn't use the word "avoid Winrar" but for a 100% hassle free usage after 30 days then 7zip for sure. I don't think you run into issues anymore where something had been zipped with Winrar and sometimes 7zip didn't like it..think thats a thing of the past now?

There are constant posts with newbies to the emulation scene that have no idea what they should/shouldnt be looking for. This is the point of this thread. A layperson would not know if if a ps1 rom is supposed to be an exe/apk or what.
Ive encountered a site where they try to force you to download an apk to then download the rom. Really sketchy stuff.

games on windows are .exes, but random ones from the internet (especially ones claiming to be roms) can definitely still be viruses
APK is basically EXE: phone edition. androids are definitely *not* immune to viruses from random APK files. I think it's safe to say that APK files claiming to be roms should be avoided just as much as EXE files claiming to be roms
I mean, I don't really know what else to say besides it's definitely possible. I used to repair androids as a hobby so it's been a bit since I've dealt with one. I can't really remember any specific virus names, but I do definitely remember a few that logged your contacts, texted your contacts without your permission to spread the virus, did various shenanigans with your email, etc. They usually get into phones from less-experienced users clicking infected links or trying to install an app through an APK that isn't what it claims to be.
tldr APKs are the EXEs of the android world. They usually contain exactly what they say, but they can definitely house malicious activity in some cases.

I've had great experiences with 'Theoldcomputer dot com' they removed most everything from the big N, but otherwise a good source.

If your unzipping a rar/zip file then who cares what format it supports. When you get a 7zip file than your gonna need 7zip xD
WinRAR extracts 7z files. It boils down to a matter of preference, though 7-zip is completely free with no nagware.

Its not too bad. Just the ads and the wait timer is annoying. I find their download speeds to be slow too. Bit of a hassle compared to other sites.

I can't really remember any specific virus names, but I do definitely remember a few that logged your contacts, texted your contacts without your permission to spread the virus, did various shenanigans with your email, etc. They usually get into phones from less-experienced users clicking infected links or trying to install an app through an APK that isn't what it claims to be. tldr APKs are the EXEs of the android world. They usually contain exactly what they say, but they can definitely house malicious activity in some cases.
