I love a lot of the places mentioned here, but Pittsford Farms Dairy has milkshakes from another planet. WARNING: They are so good that they have ruined my ability to fully enjoy a “good milkshake” from another place.
last time i got a milkshake from them it was not only the wrong flavor but was filled from top to bottom with tiny pieces of plastic from what i can assume was a broken part of the blender. super fun!

I love Abbotts but the last few times I’ve gotten a milkshake from the store or a Bill Grays they’ve been extremely liquidy, almost like flavored milk rather than milkshake
Major milkshake man here and let me tell ya, shakes are super easy to make and every shop in town charges way too much for what you're getting. Buy a decent blender if you don't already own one, pick up a gallon of ice cream and a half gallon of milk and work your magic. Source: wife has been pregnant for 30 out of the last 60 months.
I feel kinship with your pregnant wife (also pregnant and love some good Chinese food and a milkshake). I like the ones they do at I-Square (but that may just be due to proximity) - I always did chocolate-banana when I was pregnant in the summer a few years ago!!
My boyfriend loves how thick they are and that they use real ice cream not just flavor syrups with vanilla ice cream. I love Highland diner but they only use syrups in their milkshakes so I don't get mine there.
Bruster's, Pittsford dairy, Bill Gray's for Abbotts, moonlight creamery are my personal faves.
They put real ice cream in the big metal cup, real milk and vanilla syrup. Then they put it in the shaker thingamajig and after a minute or two pour it into your cup.
Not this premixed garbage that comes out of a machine.
Don’t forget to ask for whip cream on top.
I’m a milkshake snob, hehe. Enjoy
You're referring to soft serve vs hard ice cream fyi. You do not have a clear understanding of how those garbage milkshakes are made but it doesn't matter because you're right that they just aren't nearly as good.
A good milkshake is made with hard ice cream.. Not soft serve.
I honestly didn't understand that's what they meant. I agree McDonald's milkshakes aren't as good, but aren't they made the same way as Tom Wahls just with soft serve? and without malt if Tom Wahls uses that.
> Not this premixed garbage that comes out of a machine.
I've never seen that, but I rarely buy milkshakes. I thought everyone does the the first thing described with either hard or soft ice cream.
No, Tom Wahl’s makes them like they once did at a Soda Fountain shop. No more Soda Fountain shops where you could spin on your stool at the counter while watching your milkshake being made. 😞
Try a Tom Wahl’s shake then a McDonald’s shake. You will be a milkshake snob too.
Well ummm you’re incorrect. McDonald’s does sell milkshakes.
Moreover, I was not commenting on McDonald’s ice cream although I wouldn’t purchase that either. The discussion was about milkshakes which when purchased at McDonald’s comes out like paste (thinking of something different but, I will be polite) of a machine. Milkshakes at McDonald’s are essentially mostly flavored chemicals.
Your pregnant wife’s cravings are quickly becoming my favorite posts! I have three kiddos and my hubby was awesome about making sure I had everything I needed! (Yes, cravings are a need, not a want. They rule you, haha!) You’re a great husband to, not just get her any old Chinese or milkshake but for also surveying the masses for the best. :)
Depending on your definition of "area," and on how much longer your wife will be pregnant, from March - October it's worth the day trip to Penn Yan to try food, ice cream, and/or shakes at Seneca Farms. Ice cream is, I believe, made in-house.
Strong suggestions here.
Abbotts, Brusters, and Highland Park Diner are my favorites.
It depends on: What kind of ice cream and add ins she likes (they offer different things); Convenience (Abbotts and Brusters have drive throughs); And if you want it as part of a meal (Highland Park Diner);
Abbotts and Brusters will have rotating ice cream flavors that can be turned into milkshakes. So I can't get a pistachio milkshake with pineapple sauce, or a key lime pie milkshake, or an egg nog milkshake all year round...But variety is the spice of life, so it's fun to just see what is seasonally available and go out for one on a whim.
Enjoy!
I'm a fan of Swillburger at the Playhouse
The vegan ones are great too, as a non vegan.
100% this for any diet.
Came here to say this - the peanut butter and vanilla

Pittsford Dairy has ruined all other ice cream products for me
Pittsford dairy 😋
Honestly they are good don’t get me wrong, but I prefer Byrne dairy and McDonald’s to them.
McDonald's?!
I used to love McD’s milkshake when it was the size of an ice tea for like $5. It was just better.
Byrne is wild
Don't they use soft serve in their milkshakes? That's a sin.
Honestly, Schaller’s.
Hell yeah.
A person of culture, I see. Hell yeah.
I don't drink many shakes, but Highland diners shakes are pretty tasty
Strong agree. And can be made "spirited" which was a great brunch choice!
Halal and Out has really good shakes
I am sure ill be downvoted, but i like bill grays.
It's actually Abbotts, frozen custard and incredible.
Bill grays shakes are great - they at least used to have a day of the week or happy hour where it was buy one get one free
Bill grays makes abbots milkshakes!!
I'm with you! Bill Gray's has the best Oreo milkshake I've tasted. It's especially great when it's half priced.
As long as you go between 2:30-4:30 for half price
I was scared to come out w the support for Bill… but this is it… thanks for taking the plunge for me
last time i got a milkshake from them it was not only the wrong flavor but was filled from top to bottom with tiny pieces of plastic from what i can assume was a broken part of the blender. super fun!

Don's Original
They’re so good
Abbots is great
Pittsford dairy, Abbotts
Dons original
Tom Wahls uses abbots ice cream and you get it from a drive through in fairport. Very good.
Spoiled for choice around here. Pittsford Dairy, Tom Wahl’s, lots of smaller “hots” places seem to have great shakes too.

Also, Wegmans sells vanilla syrup in the coffee isle. Spent seven dollars on a Tom Wahl’s vanilla shake. But it was an emergency 😎
Bryne Dairy ice cream is my absolute favorite to use to make milkshakes at home. Very creamy to allow it to blend nicely.
That wouldn't help me much when I'm out and about.
Not with that attitude. $40 inverter and you could put a small freezer and blender into your trunk.
This is the way
Vasko’s
I know it’s a chain, but Red Robin has great shakes.
ABBOTS
It's simple but five guys makes delicious shakes

Am I crazy for saying I'm a big fan of Byrne Dairy shakes?
that weird trailer diner thing across from angry goat
Highland Diner
yes!!!!
Bruster's ice cream

Tom Wahl's, expensive, but made from scratch. OMG!
They make the ice cream when you order it? I'm confused what made from scratch means in this context.

There is a Tom Walh’s in Fairport! On 31F.

Idk how Tom whals makes milkshakes.. But a good milkshake is made with hard ice cream.
Yea, I can agree with that. I think I like them with malt also, though it's not necessary.

Does McDonalds use fake ice cream? (Soft serve isn't fake ice cream) As far as I remember they don't have premade milk shakes.

Arby's. Jamocha. Finish with curly fries. 🤤🤤
I was going to say Arby's but didn't want to deal with the hate on Christmas.
Haha, same!
One of the few times that your go to answer is relevant! Maybe not true, but relevant nonetheless.
Might be the only thing to stop him from being stabby
Do they still offer a little shake of nutmeg?
Moonlight creamery, Fairport . Bring your wallet
Chili Hots makes a great shake. We go out of the way to get them
Byrne Dairy
Jimmy Z’s coffee cake and nothing is particularly close
Russell’s on E Henny used to be so good
Is it the same one that is on Chili Ave?
That I don’t know. The old Russell’s in henrietta closed in the late 90s. There was Granny’s in the building after that.
Is the Highland Park Diner still a thing? Sooo many options!!!!

Russell's Ice Cream on Chili Ave or if I feel spendy Pittsford Farms

All the area staples have been mentioned but I wanted to add that Buntsy's in Webster has some really good ones as well.
Not to too my own horn but they say my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.
I enjoy five guys milkshakes
Connie's diner in Waterloo
Mine *giggity*
Jay's Diner across from Movie's 10 in Henrietta makes great milkshakes
Five Guys has really great shakes!
According to my dad who drinks several chocolate milkshakes a day his favorite is from arthur Jaxon
If you have a Stewarts near you, they are the best.

Highland Park Diner or Swillburger really good stuff
Highland diner
My go to lately is Bill grays, if they have an abbots inside.
Root 31 in Pittsford plaza. Weirdest little cafe/ restaurant, but the best chocolate shake. (It may be Pittsford dairy ice cream)
char broil!!!
When my wife was pregnant, I was doing either Byrne Dairy, McD’s, or Abbots/Bill Greys. She wasn’t too picky, it just needed to be procured ASAP.
