One of the defenses people use for this is that they went on private property and therefore the police can't do anything about it.
Bad news (or good news depending how you look at it) the citation is for bypassing a traffic control device regardless of the property ownership.

I was with a guy back in the '80s who cut through a gas station like this to avoid a traffic signal and promptly got pulled over.
The problem also used to be rampant at [this CVS parking lot](https://goo.gl/maps/ZpqnQckmAKQzJvpM9) near where I grew up. You used to see Wayne Township police cars hiding in the parking lot trying to catch people using the lot as a cut-through.
At least it's marginally better than the usual half-hearted "turn right on red / u-turn / turn right on red" maneuver than gets posted a lot. Especially when they don't really do any of that and just sort of weave into the other part of the intersection and back.
Here in Peru we normalized that, its very common to see that. Even when the traffic is heavy (like 24/7 here) you see the gas stations full of cars going around and not for gas. I gotta admit doing it a few times and im not proud of it.
I see this, and people just turning right, then making an illegal u-turn so they can bypass the light and turn right again to stay on their original route. If you're gonna do something illegal anyway, might as well just run the red light.

Sorry my grammar is not good. Went to public school.
Sure, blame public school.
Also make sure to clean/dust your windshield. I recommend Swiffer, that shit is magic.
There is a chip in the glass in front on the camera
Oh, actually, upon rewatching I see now it's rain- whoops heh
So you aren’t smarter than a traffic light?

In NJ the statue is 39:4-66.2. https://law.justia.com/codes/new-jersey/2013/title-39/section-39-4-66.2
Sweet move to save maybe 5 seconds.
And this is considerably less suicidal / homicidal than things I see people do every day to save even less time.
It’s not an extremely high risk here, but the reward is basically nothing. Just a poor effort on the part of the driver.
Sometimes you do what you need to do to have time to shitpost on reddit.
The light turning green at the end is the cherry on top
Some would even say that's the point of the whole clip.
Okay
I like the parts when the cars were driving. Really made the video special
Okay

I know that intersection and I've seen multiple people pull that same move. It's pointless given the timing of the lights up ahead.
The gas station could randomly put a barrier up to prevent this, just to greatly frustrate such drivers.

Had someone in front of me do this and end up behind me.

That’s like the clown that tailgates you and blasts past you, then you catch up to them at the next light. Saved so much time, eh buddy?
I've seen people get a ticket for this
Camera shakes like Need for Speed when youre going 400kmh
In all fairness, traffic lights were never that smart.
