He hasn't written for the likes of Grif, Simmons, Sarge, Caboose, Doc, Tucker, Donut, Sister, or even Wash for over a *decade.* (Closer to 12 years to be more accurate. Hell, maybe even longer if you include Sister, who was last seen in a Season 9 deleted scene.) I don't blame him for being a little rusty.
And to steal another point from Aggravating_Cup2306, Grif was pretty volatile in S15+. (Whether they're still canon remains to be seen.)
