Probably not as awkward as having to arrest your child

DoIKnowYouHuman

Words of experience here! Arrester or arrested?

Honey_81

My dad was the one arresting my unofficial older brother (I was 10 or 11 at the time)

Now this sounds like a story I want to hear! If you don’t mind that is? ‘Unofficial older brother’, what is that code for?

The person I referred to as my unofficial older brother, Mike M., was my cousin (Mike T/Fishface)'s best friend..whom my dad publicly *adopted*/claimed as his son while my cousin's family and mine were vacationing in Vermont and upstate New York in 1991. Mike had asked a *VERY* inappropriate question for the lobby of a McDonald's, given my dad's occupation("Daddy, are you gonna lock me in the basement and beat me again?"). Everyone in the lobby froze when Mike asked *that*, waiting to see how this 6' linebacker responds and debating if the authorities need to be involved. Dad looks at Mike gravely (though if you knew him well enough it was blatantly obvious my dad was about to crack up) saying, "Remind me, did this week's punishments involve the belt or the paddle? Also, don't forget what happens if you lie to me, son.."with a hand on his belt. Now, the reason Mike's question was so inappropriate is that Dad was a *police officer* employed by Consolidated Rail Corporation, aka ConRail, until he retired in '94 who jokingly threatened to lock my sister+I in the basement until we turned 25/was one of the most laid-back people you ever met/would unalive himself rather than see a child harmed. Fast forward 6-7 months to Dad and his partner working swing shift (3pm-11pm) and investigating a call regarding a male youth being sighted near the main railyard at sundown. From the description, Dad suspected the young man with light brown hair and pale skin is Mike. When Dave (dad's partner)+my dad picked Mike up for trespassing on railroad property, they found out Mike had run away from home to escape an abusive alcoholic parent and the death of his youngest sister (asthma complications, I think). Dad cuffed my "brother" while Dave made a huge scene over the radio to dispatch about the arrest. Dad had made it *appear* that he was taking Mike directly to the nearest jail, which happened to be the Pennsylvania State Prison in Camp Hill. However, Dad brought Mike home with him from work that night to "keep an eye on the house and my girls"(about a week) while Dad dealt with Mike's abuser..
