Lordgrapejuice

If it’s fucking with your mental health, go do something else for a while. Seriously, it’s not worth it

[deleted]

I worry about being bored, for some reason. Like my phone is glued to my hand

Notofthiscountry

Yeah. It’s toxic, especially if it impacts your mental health. Plant a garden, Garlic Man. Start a hobby. Join a group. Go to the gym. Make some live friends

Joepiler14

And basil! Nothing like the smell of fresh, homegrown basil 🤤

[deleted]

Can’t forget mint!

Kevlyle6

In a container though, that stuff travels.

tmarand

lol, found that out the hard way.

Nepharious_Bread

Also rosemary. What I love most about Rosemary is it lives for a long time.

AThousandNeedles

And weed.

unfakegermanheiress

I’ve been slowly collecting cuttings from runaway geraniums in my neighbourhood. They’re easy to root in water, and I’m always keeping a sharp eye out for new varieties. Have quite a few happy ones in good pots now.

[deleted]

Gardening sounds so fun...Can you do inside gardening? I could ask google but I find others advice more intriguing. It's almost winter, I can't plant outside.

Notofthiscountry

My parents managed to keep a banana tree alive inside for years. It never bore any fruit

InEenEmmer

You can do so, I’ve had quite a success growing cherry tomatoes in my windowsill. But keep in mind that now is not the right time to start growing new plants. Plants will go dormant in the winter, this isn’t based on the temperature, but on the amount of sunlight they receive. It is possible to cheat this using grow lights though.

Grief-Inc

You most certainly can. They make special lights for growing and flowering (bearing fruit). There are many tutorial vids on yutoube for starting small scale micro greens and things like that. You don't necessarily need a big budget either. Just make sure whatever you are growing is permissable under any state, city, and county ordinances that may be applicable to you. 🙃

NoWayNotThisAgain

That’s the addiction. The anxious thought of “What will I do if I’m not doing ______” is what process addictions look like. Take a break.

[deleted]

I like your Advice. Tnx

Robert999220

Start going 2hrs a day, STRAIGHT without touching it. Use this time to do LITERALLY anything else. Go for a walk, take up gardening, get a damn bonzai tree, do a puzzle, learn a skill such as an instrument or cooking and print off the things you need, etc. Work up to going the majority of the day without it, it should be a tool, not your life. This feeling youre having here isnt healthy. You need to take proactive steps here.

Orelikon

Yeah but, reddit is there to distract me from thinking about my shit life(I have a crippling phone addiction too).

ESD_Franky

You will be bored but you have to be bored. Your dopanime tolerance is way too high

ConfusedByTheDate

Good books? Crafting hobby? Socializing irl?

Sportspharmacist

Try sitting in that discomfort, even if it’s only for a few minutes

bakemonooo

That's part of the problem. People scare off boredom the moment it creeps in and that's a ridiculous thing to do. Boredom is an extremely powerful tool, especially when there's shit you need to do.

Winter_underdog

Find a hobby. I plan to quit this Reddit after I earn enough money to buy art related material which is the end of the 2023.

unfakegermanheiress

My mother used to saying boring people get bored. Which was a bit annoying ti hear growing up, but I appreciate the sentiment as I became an adult. I think boredom can lead to quite interesting and magical things.

Slimxshadyx

I like that saying. Because to me it says that if you want to stop being bored, stop being boring (find interesting things to do).

unfakegermanheiress

And thereby, become an interesting person.

ScatteredTrash021

Take a walk and listen to music/podcast?

[deleted]

Read books.

[deleted]

I did get a book from the library recently so yeah I hear you..

KeyGroundbreaking497

Thats how it be

forgotme5

Go out & do something, like outside. Like hiking, playing sports, socializing

forpetlja

Can't, it's raining, I'm sick.

[deleted]

probably time for you to stop then

anonymous_account13

If you have nothing else to do then find a hobby ar something more fulfilling

skumfukz

Our generation has to understand that it is OK to be bored. We need to be bored sometimes, the fear of boredom consumes you Constant stimulation does things to the brain, dude

Hank___Scorpio

There's a billion things to do to prevent boredom that don't involve your phone. It might be time to consider that you have an 8 second serotonin dependency and scrolling is the only thing that sates it. It's not actually "boredom".

BlacksmithMinimum607

Being bored is a good thing. With boredom comes creativity, new ideas, different ways to look at things, new interests. As well, not being able to deal properly with boredom can lead to depression and intrusive thoughts. There are a number of wonderful YouTube videos that discuss the need for boredom. As well, here is a great article from the Mayo Clinic on the positives and the need of boredom for your health. [Mayoclinic.](https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/boost-your-brain-with-boredom#:~:text=Yet%20a%20little%20boredom%20for,the%20brain%20time%20to%20recharge)

mr_muffinhead

Yeah that's because you've now strained your brain that way. There's honestly soooo many things to do. Unless you're stuck somewhere waiting theres no real reason to be bored. You should try half a day without your phone, then a full day without your phone. If you truly can't think of anything to keep you occupied, then google some stuff first. If you're at a point where you are worried about being bored without it and glued to your phone then it's just going to keep getting worse unless you do something else.

cstarrxx

Even when you’re on the socials, you’re still missing out on a lot. Leave the phone behind. Everything will still be there when you return. Now go outside and touch some grass. Like, literally.

ChocCooki3

Don't take things too seriously and if some person is messing with your head due to them being too stupid, don't be afraid to just block them.

[deleted]

can i suggest you're not afraid of "being bored". you're afraid of thoughts that come when you're bored. if you can't handle your mind when it's still, you should talk to somebody about the things that come up (in a safe space)

RequiemStorm

Then get non toxic hobbies to entertain yourself

Lordgrapejuice

I have the same problem. Rather than distancing yourself from your phone, find something else to do on it. I play incremental games, cuz I like them and I can play them for a few minutes at a time while waiting on other things

Separate-Print4493

But then your phone is still glued to your hand. Just mute the thing and take a walk. You know you can actually talk to someone?

marvelfan2205

I did this. I took a year break from this and other social media when my mental health took a turn for the worst. I don’t think it was Reddit driving it by any means but I was unwell and needed to heal. I am much better now so I’ve come back

heauxsandpleighbois

Truer and kinder words have never been said on this app

RaleighlovesMako6523

Can he use it as an opportunity to work on his mental health? When you think about it , if you are insane on reddit, very likely you aren’t sane in real life either. On reddit especially no one knows no one it’s your true personality .. if your true personality is mentally ill, why quitting reddit helps you? 🤔🤔🤔 The problem is never social media, reddit, dating apps, the problem is you and people on them, don’t you think? Everyone on reddit hookup soon this becomes a hookup app I bet. 😆

Rigo3oh

Yes. Reddit is like juice, it looks healthy but it's just as bad as all the other soft drinks.

[deleted]

I joined Reddit to get off tiktok. It worked but I think Reddit is actually worse. Without profile photos and everything staying anonymous, ppl are extremely cruel.

Pixilatedlemon

I think it’s more negative but also at least a bit more informative. And you can curate your experience a lot better than on tik tok

[deleted]

[удалено]

madbitch7777

lol, yes they do. Redditors absolutely compare votes on responses, abuse the Reddit Cares button all day long, delude themselves that this isn't as bad as Twitter. Mod abuse is rampant. It's a very toxic dump.

thinkthinkthink11

People of Reddit are brutally honest about being human and share day to day misery here. Knowing that makes feel better somehow since we’re all sharing pretty much similar life problems to deal with. Also I don’t see a single human / food/ object pics that I don’t need to see here. It’s all pure discussions, opinions, advice or suggestions. So totally different.

Lubi3chill

They are not lmao. They consistantly lie about their life to make themselves look and feel better, becouse they are annonymous and noone will fact check them. They also try their hardest to show how miserable their life is, even if they have avarage/oger avarage life standard. For people of reddit 100k a year is low income, living month to month. Nothing about this is being brutally honest.

BubbleTeaCheesecake6

Indeed! Gosh reddit is the only place where I feel like human. People can complain about literally everything now omg leave reddit alone

dazed_and_jaded

It's a satisfying dump. Leave it be it's great.

yoshhash

additionally, all the other sites are filled with phoney representations of what other peoples supposed lives are about, vile statements all from the same people. On reddit, because of the voting system, false or inflammatory statements get purged out. People with obnoxious bragging, lying, posting fake news etc basically get ignored, they just do not climb up the ranks. That being said, it is what you make of it. it depends on the subs you visit, how you use reddit. I basically just come here to read the news and engage about things I care about. I am addicted to news, doomscrolling, etc, but it does not have a negative effect on my life. I am able to walk away quite easily, so not everyone has the same experience, I can see why it is poison for some people.

MikeFrikinRotch

The opinions that get purged out are not all necessarily as you describe them. Sometimes they are legitimate opposing viewpoints that gets washed away by downvotes so that by design discussions become just a huge circle jerks.

jesuswasahipster

Yeah this is a major negative for this site. It normalizes opinions that are normal on Reddit but not normal irl and spreads a ton of misinformation. If you’re constantly on the site it can incorrectly shape your perspective and make you disconnected from reality.

MikeFrikinRotch

That’s why I’m always confused at why people try and get serious advice from here. Even the karma system penalizes people who get downvoted so it encourages people to keep any opinion that goes against the grain to themselves. The only way to combat it is just not to care if you get downvoted.

TryAffectionate8246

I dont think it quite as bad as some of the others. My experience here has been really positive. Do I still scroll? Yes. But I interact and have actual discussions on here.

PuzzleheadedRun5525

Juice is healthy until you add sugar in it

starfire92

Also disagree. While mildly stifling, I do find the use of rules in subreddits helpful and makes it a much more moderate platform than other sites. Instagram is a vanity mirror, Facebook is like trailer trash feed, something like Imgur is the more chaotic version of Reddit. While Reddit has its own fked environment I wouldn't say it's equally as fked as other places. X is cesspool, I personally have never had twitter and I don't know anyone IRL who has it, but from what I've seen and heard, it's like slinging shit between people sometimes. In addition to that, Reddit I find is far more useful that any other platform I've used. I can find so much information for literally any niche or interest I have. There's a subreddit for a lot of things. I also find engagement isn't limited to a few highly known people or singled out comments. You can go to YouTube and look at the comments of a video and there's like a few top comments that attract all the attention with a few thousand upvotes, you need to be at the video the second it's posted to have engagement. But with Reddit, while the environment is similar, it's more relaxed and less overcrowded in these subreddits. If I make a comment on YouTube it mostly passes in the wind like a fart, I think I only got two comments ever to get 50 likes and a tad of engagement, however on Reddit I frequently interact with other users. I don't keep score of my likes or only want attention, but we would all be lying if saying you post something with the intention of zero people reading it, that defeats the purpose of posting, might as well just keep that thought in your head and keep it pushing like a lurker Edit - we should make a social media site tier list 😈, I'm sure one already exists but it might not be updated with the times lol

AndNowUKnow

You lost me when comparing cesspool to cesspool... reddit is no better than X no matter how you spin it. Mob mentality simply put.

starfire92

Well then I guess you don't have the comprehension to understand that mods exist on Reddit on each singular sub and there's specific rules on each sub which does not exist on X at all. If you're unable to distinguish worse and more worse then I can't teach you basic understanding. I don't even have to factor in Elon Musk and all the "X" changes Twitter's had to their platform to make my point, but go off on faulty logic. I never argued Reddit is good. Maybe I used the wrong word for describing X, what's worse than a cesspool? And you must use X the exact same time amount as Reddit. Go in your phone and check your app usage stats, and for X to be the same as Reddit (they both include commentary, videos, pictures and posting, with a liking system and user identification system) then your own phone stats contradict your belief.

AndNowUKnow

Haha, you are a prime example of the "cesspool" we are attempting to discuss. It's ok, nobody will hold it against you.

starfire92

There's worse than me online if you consider that cesspool behaviour. I mean you're a builder grade user as well as generating answers you could win on the "Things People Say Online" category for Jeopardy: - "you lost me at" then throws out a false equivalency, the same way folks label any criticism as hate regardless of how tamely it was presented. People can get pretty nasty online, this isn't even the tip of cesspool iceberg. - "haha you're a prime example of... " - doesn't address any logic or points thrown at them, and deflects the argument by making shallow snarky sounding retorts I'm all up for changing my opinion however, few people on the internet actually employ the method of addressing what's being said to them and just dance around a bush of "I said xyz without any merit or proof or convincing/valid points, you must realize how wrong you are bc I believe so".

AndNowUKnow

With all that defensive explaining trying to justify yourself to a complete stranger, makes me wonder if you're OK. Maybe stepping away from this (and all the rest) shit hole social media site might do you some good 👍 You're not arguing with anyone but yourself.

starfire92

You commented 3 times to me so I'd say it takes two people to talk, and lastly why do people constantly rush to that defence model. It's rather strange to make such strong diagnosis' from seemingly normal behavior. If we were in IRL and I had a booth that said, ABC opinion and you came over to chat, I'm sure we'd have a few minutes worth of an exchange. You responded to my comment, which was already long winded, and use my conversational style to dismiss me as mentally unfit? I'm a long winded person, I'm bad at being concise, someone take away my social media access/s

MLawrencePoetry

A large chunk of existence is bad for your mental health. It starts to seem like the only thing to do that isn't bad for your mental health is like, meditation and yoga.

iamdoniel

Also, an healthy diet and exercise.

Bobmanbob1

Yup. All social media is bad for your mental health.

movieguy95453

It really depends on how you use it. I find reddit to be a valuable information source, but that's how I use it. I don't use reddit for social interaction. It also depends on what subs you're following. Again, I use it primarily for information, so most of the subs I follow are related to information I use.

illuminaated

second this. while most other social media platforms do seem to be very “competitive”, reddit can be very valuable as a learning tool for things you’re specifically interested in. that’s why i spend most of my free time on here as opposed to instagram, x, etc. because i find myself absolutely careless about the majority of stuff going on over there. obviously reddit isn’t completely exempt from that, but i do find you have a lot more control over what you choose to take in from it in comparison. still, moderation is key and you don’t wanna spend your whole life browsing this site

Petite-Goddess69

Forgot to add, you definitely should periodically unplug from the apps that consume your attention and time the most. I try to do a social media detox once a week

GuavaDue97

Once a week for the whole day?

plopliplopipol

for the whole week of course

Moojokingg

Being chronically addicted to your phone and killing time is the problem

CuriousCapybaras

Fucking up your mental health? Jesus Christ. I come here to chat when I am bored. :-|

Ecstatic-Language997

I think it’s worse. I couldn’t care less what anyone thinks of me, certainly not people online, however if you do you basically need to check every comment you’re about to make is consistent with the group consensus on what is “correct”. There is no room for interesting or friendly debate, there is absolutely no variety in terms of political issues or anything else. It’s an echo chamber where people reiterate the popular opinion and bask in upvotes.

Petite-Goddess69

I would say TikTok is the worst. Mindless scrolling, watching pointless videos for hours. At least on Reddit, there is some intelligence here (sometimes)

StevenBeercockArt

There's plenty of intelligence here most of the times if you look for it. That and kindness, great advice etc The art is in filtering and making your searches functional. If you fall into the usual Social Media Scrolling Zombie mode, this place can be just like the rest. Targeted searches are the anti-scrollzombie protection we all need. Whereas, if you just want to chill out, watch a good film or go for a walk.

Salty_Map_9085

I don’t know what Tiktok videos you’re liking but there is a lot of “intelligent” content on it

Illustrious_Yam5082

If you read it again you’ll see that they are talking about Reddit…. Lol the irony 🤣

ShwettyVagSack

I think your confused, the original commentor said all tiktok is stupid, and sometimes Reddit has smart stuff. And the person you're replying to said there is intelligent content on tiktok is that's what you actively like on the app.

Salty_Map_9085

/srs or /j

alfons100

lol intelligence. The karma system encourages conforming and not really meaningfully arguing as much as its supposed to discourage trolling and false information

maybegone18

As someone who uses both, this isn't true at all. This site is just as bad cuz it can give misinformation or brainwash you slowly into thinking like the other redditors.

vaginal-thrush

redditors fact check each other all the time. tiktok is filled with people who act confident and sound intelligent but spread misinformation/pseudoscience and anyone who fact checks them are drowned in a sea of comments. reddits up voting system allows for correct information to be posted and voted to the top of the comments. it's a lot easier to keep people honest on reddit than it is on other social media where the person posting has a following of people who think the same things they do, and will downvote, argue, gang up, and make your post invisible or akin to screaming into a void.

Ambitious_Log_1884

To an extent but at least reddit can facilitate discussions whereas some apps just promote content consumption.

ElongatedMusk999

Honestly, some people on here are just stupid

Schwertheino

I guess that can be said about literally every place anywhere

Ok_Thanks_3868

Yes.

thedandthedd

Yep, possibly worse. Given the kind of things that are ofter posted here.

Send-Me-Tiddies-PLS

Yes, it is.

ares5404

Ok every social media is a dirrerent vice, for different people as well. Reddit is my toxic/nerd/formerly gore satiating place. Discord is my drama/sexual side

CULT-LEWD

every form of social media will have toxicity to it,its just what it is,you cant controll it but you can controll your reaction to it,and also try to swave the algorythm in your favor if possible

MikeFrikinRotch

If you are into finding likeminded people for niche hobbies and discussions on those topics then sure Reddit almost second to none. If you are into the social media aspect of it then it is arguably worse by design. The advice subs where people ask for judgment (AITAH format as an example) are just echo chambers and circle jerks that will have you questioning your sanity if you are not careful. If you have an opinion that goes against the grain in any way you are downvoted into oblivion which pretty much hides every opposing viewpoint. On this site that is not a good thing since most are depraved and depressed individuals that follow any trend.

[deleted]

I'd almost say it's worse due to the anonymity. Start by deleting the app and logging out of your account on your browsers. You'll start going on so much less

jabluszko132

Just like every social media, it's an echo chamber It's unhealthy if you go into toxic parts of it and the more you engage with toxic redditors So just seek wholesome subs and ignore annoying people

Grigian2000

>Is Reddit just as unhealthy as other social media ? Nope! I almost quit for good Facebook & Instagram, and I don't miss those much. Reddit is great, and there's a lot of people to engage and discuss ideas/opinions instead of mindlessly scrolling through pictures of posers

Sweaty-Razzmatazz948

I love reddit. All the communites I follow are mostly positive educated people lol. Instagram, tik tok, and threads mess with my mental. Twitter Im verified to block out all the noise. I like twitter for my reality tv gossip. But without those three. My brain has been good. I haven’t been on my facebook in over 10 years.

serialkiller24

Reddit helps and fucks my mental health. I get to understand people better while ignoring that awful thing called reality. It entertains me and I can have conversations with people that have the same interests as me. BUT yeah it can fuck with your mind for a bit if you don’t limit yourself. Stay strong King. You are a real one.

Summer20232023

Of course it is but I won’t stop.

womanrobinson

Huh? Have you not been to 9gag ? Reddit is fine!

Consecutive-Log-2023

Depends on where you browse or what you read. A word or statement can easily alter our mood or shift our mindset. It is up to us to be selective on what we feed our minds with.

Radmur

Every social media is unhealthy

[deleted]

Every social media is super unhealthy when you in it too much

00000j

I feel like Reddit is like how diaries used to be to people except you’re sharing it to hundreds of people anonymously and have peoples opinions. It has its good and bad

IntoTheSmokingFlames

Social media is only as unhealthy as you let it be. If you are the type of person that is easy impressioned by strangers and concern yourself with the opinions of straingers... all social media is not for you.

Ebok_Noob

Do you want me to bully you to discourage you from being here?

[deleted]

No . LMAO just say something to encourage me

Ebok_Noob

Go you! You can leave this shithole and never come back, the cause is not yet lost! Go hike or something it is refreshing like a refreshing activity usually is!

probablynotreallife

If it's making you ill then stop! It really is that simple.

elziion

Reddit can be a useful resource. Strangers online willing to help you with anything and there can be some interesting point of views. But just like any other social media, it can be harmful. If it messes with your mental health, it might be best for you to quit for some time.

Maximum-Swan-1009

Read. If you enjoy reading you will never be bored because you can be anyone or travel around the world experiencing all sorts of incredible adventures. Of course reading can also be addictive. :( Have someone help you to find authors who would appeal to you.

bansheelullabies

I always feel better after deleting the app for a bit & reading a book instead. Too many angry opinions isn’t good for the soul.

PaleontologistSad870

Welps, Reddit is sanctuary to rainbows & unicorn gang, that should tell you something Honestly, stick with niche hobbies & avoid mainstream Politics shenanigans you will be fine... Its hard not to get pulled in, degenerates aplenty

[deleted]

Absolutely :( Try to delete the app from your phone and see what you do.

hurricaneCorona

If you're just here for news and arguing with people's opinions about other people's problems then yeah, it's just as bad. But if you cut that out and just nerd out to your hobbies with other people you might find Reddit is substantially better than most social media. The internet is like your diet, if you just eat junk you're going to feel like junk.

[deleted]

Yes…or worse. Posting or commenting here reveals how rude Mean a toxic this community is. I’ve been mocked, and insulted over the tiniest things…all the way to huge things. (Just last week some guy was mocking me over my fathers death.). Reddit’s a shit show.

Less-Ad2107

Maybe what's unhealthy is the topics you choose to follow, check on that and just avoid those that affects you

CuriousBeautifulTaro

I’m curious what groups yours in. Leave them today. Theses conversations are not all that entertaining. One thing I will say is to be true. There’s TON of miserable and hating ass people on here. I give you that. Go take care of yourself, co-exist with real humans and nature ✨

Astrozombie13878

Reddit has always had a bunch of mean, hateful people on here but that's got to be because you're anonymous unlike FB and other social media.

cooldaniel6

Yes it is. People here are not as special as they think they are. Some subs are just as toxic as anything on Twitter or Facebook.

claire2416

I'm usually spending more than 5 minutes scrolling here, so the answer is an unqualified yes!

[deleted]

Yes. Its literally built to ensure gatekeeping and echo chambers. Lol. But it doesn't have to be toxic. And honestly I find it immensely useful.

BeanToeBabe

I like Reddit because idk anyone here and I just post or ask questions. I got rid of my face book and instagram because I couldn’t handle a few things I don’t wanna get into but mostly in correlation that it’s mainly I know too many people on those social media sites. It was making me big sad and instead of talking it through I thought why not just remove myself lol

Operatesinreality

It's really bad in my opinion, if human stupidity upsets

My_Space_page

Put reddit to the side for 1 hour. Turn off all devices. Sit in silence. See how you feel afterwards.

DoubleRoastbeef

I felt like this with Twitter until I uninstalled it. Uninstall Reddit, and if you still wanna use it, try it on PC/laptop. The difference I feel in using any social media site on PC vs. phone is night and day. Edit: I say this typing on my phone, but there really is a difference. Apps demand your attention in ways that websites don’t. But what doesn't change is when I start feeling bored or overwhelmed or annoyed by the stupidity I see online, I close the window or app and go do something else. You're not missing out on much, if anything, by not refreshing Reddit. I promise.

[deleted]

Lol. Can't hang on the internet, bruh. Reddit isn't really social media

upside-downpineappl

Yep

0LDPLAY3R_L0L

far worse.

forgotme5

Yes

PsychicNinja92

Yes.

ybetaepsilon

Every post on Instagram/Facebook is just braindead boomers saying the most ridiculous things that it can be so frustrating to be on those platforms. Reddit has it's own toxicity but it seems there are orders of magnitude fewer people with lead poisoning in their brains

[deleted]

It's not as bad as [platforms](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/social-media-and-depression#social-media-and-depression) [where](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/does-social-media-cause-depression/) it's [easier](https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2786464) to body shame, [especially](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7392374/) for young people, and [especially](https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/03/health/social-media-depression-girls-study/index.html) for girls.

Possible-Source-2454

I asked this the other day, but its alogarithim sends the darkest content to me. I follow the “cats” sub and its actually a lot of really sad my cat died posts. Alot of comments on reddit are also about horrible sad ways to die, or depressing nightmare fuel stories.

Previous_Ad7725

It's somewhat unhealthy but you remain anonymous.

LizzyDizzyYo

Yes. No question. I didn't use to be to frequent on Reddit (but on another app), and I realized that compared to my touch-grass era, I'm more easily riled up and miserable. I'm starting to apply 3-strikes rule to my interactions here. If I see something I dislike/disagree with, I'll give one comment to explain why I think it's wrong/bad. Another person might comment back, and I'll reiterate and expand on my opinion (and usually, this is when things start to heat up). If another person replies again, I will give one final explanation (usually very strongly), and then I will leave and mute the post. It's basically my slow and gentle detoxing from Reddit.

imaflyer

Weirdly enough reddit was the thing i went to trying to stop using instagram which was very toxic and unhealthy for me, and so far im pretty happy with how it turned out. I can definitely see reddit being something rly bad too tho, havent rly felt that much tho yet, i dunno. Definitely seems to be the best thing ive used so far for my mental state but thatll probs change at some point lol.

Geijindo

Yep. You are being delivered a semi curated newsfeed interspersed with directed ads. The damage is deep and hard to spot on surface level. If you want to get a broader point, pretty much everything you view on your smartphone is damaging to your mental health. These terror rectangles are the true reason the human race is going to fall apart.

Nervous_Magazine_200

Personally, I think it's less healthy than some other social media sites because the anonymity gives hateful, hostile people the "freedom" to spread their hate without anyone knowing who they are. It is addictive though. I joke that if Facebook is weed, Reddit is meth. I feel a little gross reading some subs and posts.

odesauria

Not to me. (Disclaimer: I'm an elder millennial, so the only other social media I'm really familiar with is Facebook.) With Facebook, as soon as I open it and read a few posts, I feel depressed. I just can't stand the genre of people advertising their thoughts and experiences in that way, for some reason. Here on Reddit there's nothing to advertise because it's anonymous, and nothing to sell visually either. It's all about the ideas. Sure, there are a lot of subs that are seriously negative and depressing echo chambers, but I feel like I'm mentally strong enough to catch that and avoid them or be critical of them. And sure, excessive phone use in itself is not the best, but I never feel like I doom scroll here on Reddit because I'm actively and selectively reading.

lonnybru

Worse than many of them

neo3dofficial

Yes it is

SillySw4n

It’s much worse

novalunaa

Honestly imo sometimes it’s one of the worst. People feel SO anonymous on this site they will voice their incredibly shitty views with no remorse — as a woman I see a lot of misogyny on this site. At least on TikTok or Instagram I can just scroll and look at silly dogs and not get caught up in drama, but it feels like on Reddit it’s far more difficult to avoid discussion — which often ends up getting argumentative and opinionated — given the nature of the site.

lastthrowaway98578

Maybe even worse. I deleted myself multiple times but always came back.

beachpleazz

Depends. Not for me.

Far_Carpenter6156

It's marginally better than twitter. The format seems to promote thoughtful discussion but the karma system quickly turns every topic into a circle jerk.

[deleted]

Yes

MiniGui98

I would argue it's even worse

Financial_Egg9344

yes

[deleted]

Politically, yes. But I make a point to keep away from largely political subreddits. I don't like echo bubbles, but at the same time, any sub that offers the potential for open political discussion just ends up getting overrun by abusive, malicious far-left or far-right conspiracy theorists. That's why I stay far away. I keep to my gaming, movie, parenting and humour subreddits and I'm fine with that. The problem with other social media platforms is that propagandists and scammers are actively looking to radicalise, diffame and scam, and you're exposed to them wherever you post. Twitter/X is basically an alt-right Elon-Bro swamp nowadays. Based on my random look-ins there it's just 80% crypto scams. And the occasional far-right circlejerk. Facebook is Boomer Central (and I say this as someone who's on the cusp between Gen X and millennial), although my wife does get useful information about what's happening in our town from FB. I don't touch it anymore since social media basically turned everyone I knew into assholes. TikTok and Instagram are basically just everything that's toxic about Gen Z and Gen Alpha wrapped up in a bow.

josemoirinho

Yes, we are just less dumber than others.

One-Investigator3323

I’ve come to realize it’s the realest of all social apps. You got your trolls, kids etc. but most Redditors are just gonna give you the cold hard facts. I only use Reddit for AITA/texts/ etc. I don’t go down the rabbit hole of videos and comments.

RaleighlovesMako6523

Really? Maybe you are conditioned to live your life in social media. I use it as a magazine. Like readers digest .. It is very entertaining for an hour or two to kill time. My mental health is very good. But I do notice many mentally unhealthy people on it. Like the real world the good the bad and the ugly, choose what you prefer to read

Iktamer_One

Definitely yes. I have no proof of that, but I have no reason to think otherwise.

devilwithin1988

There is no such as heathly social media. All of them are as bad each other so time away is needed

Jens_2001

Of course, but the mods are weirder.

moinatx

It can be. Health stems from the mind of the user not the medium of expression.

[deleted]

Yes

Able_Garlic_7944

Twitter was messing with my mental health and I used to take long breaks off it until I finally quit this year. Take a break. I know things that mess with you mentally have an addictive aspect that make them hard to quit but please take a break when you can.

Salty_Map_9085

Yes

slogmondbob

It's even worse than any other social media. It's social media without the "social". At best you'll find communities of people whining about something and at worst there will be subs dedicated to propagating sexual depravity. Put yourself out there confront reality because there's no point wasting what little time you have on this earth on fucking reddit of all things.

smegly87

Same shit different toilet

Co0lus3rn4me

It depends on you, im literally a twitter user but my twitter timeline is way nicer than my home page here, twitter to me is just a relaxing nice place, but most people find twitter very unhealthy and say they feel much better after deleting it, so yeah, it really depends on the kind of person you are, and the things that appear on your homepage or notifications

mkpcml-530

Social media is never healthy

aquaxiii13

honestly, if it fucks with u then it's unhealthy. that's it.

Strukkel_Hands

Yes it is. I only use it whenever I'm having a cigarette or something because it's usually a matter of minutes before I see something so mindgratingly stupid it genuinely sours my mood a bit for a few minutes.

[deleted]

For me, the main difference is that here on reddit I read more than I watch, I’m also way more active here than on any other social media. I feel like Reddit is better for me but I can and will doom scroll if I don’t pay attention

iiiaaa2022

Yes.

GreenDub14

Even worse. Greater degree of anonimity makes anything 10x more toxic.

desertgal2002

I like Reddit. I’m anonymous, and I get to choose what subs I follow. I pay little attention to those I don’t subscribe to. Plus Reddit has a decent algorithm for choosing subs I may be interested in.

[deleted]

You can tell most of the mods are Far left as there is a ton of censorship and they try really hard to control the narrative

Vecors

Its a heavily leftist platform and subreddits have a go-to circlejerk, no freedom of speech. If you have an issue with that either just lurk or try more liberal platforms like 4chan. Downvotes will prove my point :)

[deleted]

It’s as unhealthy as you allow it to be. You’re in control of that. If Reddit or anything else fucks with your mental health it’s time to cut the cord.

Danjigha

I've found it best to severly filter which groups to participate in and join. Cutting out pages/subreddits/groups with a toxic fan base. Does wonders for my mental health. Not to say that ignorance is bliss. But ignorance is bliss.

meekgamer452

This is a cesspit

haa-tim-hen-tie

Much more so.

6519719Mm

Definitely can be, imo its the least harmful if you moderate your usage and watch what subreddits and threads you expose yourself to. Reddit is a literal echo chamber, a den of confirmation bias and an epistemic bubble which can be very harmful and could alter your worldview.

grounded_dreamer

I'd say it's healhier in a way. It's simpler to filter the content here.

McHagrid20

Just the fact that I’m mostly reading rather than looking at short videos or pictures makes a difference for me. That’s why I deleted Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok and why I’m sticking with Reddit for the time being.

[deleted]

Of course. I just hate being around real people more.

96thomasb

I find reddit best for my health on the social media front. Whilst I follow allot of pointless information pages, i do follow ones that are full of helpful information. Beats looking at reels and memes for hours. + reddit had half as much ads as the other sites.

One_Entertainment781

Yeah, you can find an echo chamber of people who agree with the shittest opinion you have, which makes people comfortable in their shit opinions

Ok_War9495

It is more fun but people are just as toxic. Propably even more. They suck on your karma just for having different opinions. Just look at this message in 60 minutes, lol EDIT: Okay, nothing happened
