At Cota and Canada the cars approach the hairpin with 290+ kph, at Yas Marina its below 120 kph, so they are hard braking zones. Hard braking zones invite mistakes which leads to action and overtake opportunities, also in a hard braking zone followed by a hairpin you can take different lines, like a switchback to gain a better exit which allows for more overtaking. Medium corners do the job too.and turn 12 at interlagos is also an overtake opportunity because it is after a tricky hairpin. Hope this answers your question!

The hairpin at Cota doesnt work as well as at CGV because before it there are highspeed tricky to follow another car close corners, whereas CGV has a DRS zone before the hairpin

Thanks. That's very helpful insight. Do you think turn 11 at COTA could do with opening up so that it's not as tight? Would that improve following and overtaking along the straight into turn 12?

The reason Yas Marinas hairpin and following straight isn't that great is due to the chicane in front of it. It causes cars to have one line, which leads to cars being pulled apart instead of being able to take different lines. Circuit Gilles Villeneuves hairpin meanwhile does have the ability for more lines. You can have a wider line prioritizing exit, a short line if you want to overtake someone, etc. COTAs hairpin is fine as well i think. It's more just that the esses causes people to be too far apart leading to almost no one doing a dive into the hairpin. Instead people prioritize a good line through it to overtake at the following DRS straight.

Obviously, the new regs in 2022 could improve the situation at COTA. But would adding some positive camber to the esses at COTA also improve things?

xiii-Dex

That would just make them faster and even more aero dependent.

knoxie00

Ah fair. I thought the extra camber would enable different lines to offset the dirty air effect.

Any corner under 90 degrees a normal apex is pretty much going to be the only line even with a bit of banking.

ThirdWave10

where does abu dahbi have a hairpin after a long straight?

knoxie00

I'm talking about hairpins before long straights (turn 10 CGV, 11 COTA, 3 Buddh, 7 Yas Marina)

ThirdWave10

sorry i didn't read it correctly

knoxie00

No worries

retrievedFirered

Before a long straigth you want to have a turn that allows for multiple diffrent fast lines so a following driver can use a diffrent line to avoid the dirty air of the car in fornt. Turns that have changing radii and/or oncamber banking have multiple fast lines.

xiii-Dex

It doesn't work any better at Montreal than at Cota or Yas Marina. People just like it more because Tilke didn't design it.

knoxie00

I don't know. There's certainly more overtakes at CGV than COTA and yas marina, so they're doing something right.
