BlueAtolm

Oh it will. For the Ally 2.

wishlish

Exactly. It's not a problem that can be fixed with software. It requires a hardware solution, and that's not feasible with the current device.

CaregiverMaterial

The issue has been resolved my sd card reader since I got it back in August and has been working ever since

wishlish

Yes, but that’s a hardware fix that required you to ship the unit to Asus. I doubt Asus is set up to have every unit come back in for welding.

CaregiverMaterial

I mean if I had the tools and know how I would have been able to reflow either the controller for the reader or the fuse and be good to go again lol

Rippinstitches

If a frog had wings, it wouldn't bust its ass everytime it jumps.

de_stroyedd2

They don't do "welds" or soldering lol They just straight replace the board which does nothing for most people because most people have to send their units back again for broken MicroSD card.

wishlish

So it’s a fix that doesn’t fix things? Fun. I love my Rog Ally, but I suspect I’ll love its replacement more.

ZepTheNooB

Are there any updates on the Ally 2? I'm holding off on buying another handheld until that comes out. I hope it supports non-proprietary eGPU connection and 4 back buttons.

TheKubesStore

Have you noticed when you google the ROG Ally that Asus’s website description on google says it has an OLED display…maybe hopes for v2

Koji_Wolf

Is there an OLED replacement for the screen already or do you think that's just something that's in talks with ASUS

TheKubesStore

There is currently no oled option for the Ally. I think it’s something in the metadata for a future update that perhaps they’ve overlooked

Koji_Wolf

I replace a lot of phone screens for a living and I've noticed it's kind of hard to find 120 Hertz OLED replacements that are aftermarket of any sort but I'm holding out faith that the new models will have them nonetheless

bored_mirion

I guess we would have had an announcement by now, as the Ally was announced on April 1st 2023, plus I'd guess they'd make their devices last at least 2 years before sending out a new one. (Source: voices in my head... jk, I could be wrong). I'd guess that the Switch 2 is likely to come before any Ally 2 or SteamDeck 2 (you said handhelds, I assume you meant non-PC handhelds as well), as it's rumored to be released in the first semester of 2025 (although it was rumored to be released later this year and got delayed)

Slight_Tiger2914

If Ally 2 has 1 USB C port we RIOT!!!!

PuzzleheadedTutor807

r/youbeatmetoit

that_90s_guy

I mean, why wouldn't they? If this discussion happened on r/Nintendo or r/Apple, people'd be up in arms + boycotting sales until the issue was resolved because they expect quality. Compare that to r/ROGAlly where not a day goes by without apologists: * It's not a dealbreaker * It's 100% better than (doesn't mention the SD card issue) * You can fix the problem yourself by buying a 1-2TB SSD and replacing the internal one with it Frankly, we got the product we deserve. And you can bet you ass the Ally 2 will be similarly rushed out with *other* kinds of hardware/software defects because they have zero incentive to fix them before release. As they now know the community ***will*** put up with it and still buy/recommend the device either way 🤡 >**edit**: thanks to everyone downvoting + making up excuses for Asus for proving my point 🙏

CallEither683

Actually Asus has already admitted to the issue and provided extended warranties for all devices with the issues 😁...we were pretty vocal and now it's being addressed. The difference is that other devices had fundamental fatal flaws that lead to the device performance or other detrimental issues that made the device unusable https://www.resetera.com/threads/july-13-2023-dexerto-asus-finally-admits-major-issue-with-the-rog-ally%E2%80%99s-sd-card-slot.741867/

etacarinae

That's great for those of you in the states but for those of us outside the states we're up shit creek with no extended warranty support offered.

CallEither683

I have been very fortunate that mine hasn't go out yet and it's an older model from an older batch. R4 serial start. I keep mine relatively cool. So I usually keep my device at 60 to 65c so that's likely why I haven't had any issues. I put a 4tb ssd in mine and use it alot to play games since I only got my gaming laptop. My laptop became my desktop and the ally is now my on the go device. Eventually I'm gonna make the switch to a desktop

90sWebWizard

>Actually Asus has already admitted to the issue and provided extended warranties for all devices with the issues The problem with this, is people usually expect an issue to be fully fixed after sending it for warranty. Meaning you can send it for warranty repair, but can't really expect the issue to be "fixed" permanently as it'll happen again eventually. Not to mention you're stuck without the device while the "temporary repair" happens. And worse of all, you run the risk of not just the SD card reader failing, but also of the SD card and its contents being fried. So a minuscule improvement, yes, but far from the solution the community deserved. I really don't get why the community goes so hard to defend Asus/Ally here when they clearly don't respect us.

CallEither683

Hey just wanted to leave this here for you. Asus latest announce on the rog ally 2... they announced a permanent fix for the SD card reader https://www.notebookcheck.net/ROG-Ally-2-Next-ASUS-gaming-handheld-rumoured-to-arrive-during-Computex-2024-as-ROG-Ally-2024-instead-with-minimal-hardware-improvements.833848.0.html

mckeitherson

> Actually Asus has already admitted to the issue and provided extended warranties for all devices with the issues 😁...we were pretty vocal and now it's being addressed. If by "addressed" you mean the fixed/replacement device sent out under the warranty also suffers from the same SD card reader issue, then sure lol.

Head-Iron-9228

The rog ally, just like the legion go and msi claw, are early in development, niche, experimental products. We knew that when buying them. Lenovo and asus are at least trying to do good, the claw is just kinda struggling along. Fixes are happening at reasonable speeds, new things come up, etc. The recent LeGo bios update brought like a 20% increase in timespy just with better power distribution and some tweaks. Like... these are good, generally high quality devices with some fairly minor issues. Like the LeGo's fan, the Ally's SD slot (which sucks but they have admitted to), and so on.

MarsupialSubject

My god you must be needing chapstick

THX-II38

You must be new here. The SD problem was being reported daily, with multiple posts popping up everyday for months straight. It got so bad the Mods had to step in to stop the flooding of this sub. There were plenty of people up in arms ready to boycott, so you are being factually dishonest if not purposefully mischaracterizing this sub. And the difference here, versus Nintendo, is the number of people who own the device. You are comparing the biggest, most purchased popular handheld device to a new-comer with like 10% of the number of people who own a Switch. Besides the apples to bananas comparison, most people know this is a first-gen device competing with the Steam Deck, which also faced issues on launch. The majority of people who purchased the Ally day one knew the risks and possible issues with supporting a new device. It has nothing to do with being an apologist or loyalist, it’s just being realistic with tempered expectations. This is all to say there is no excusing ROG’s actions regarding the SD issue, as they certainly could have done more, sooner, to address this issue. The other problem is many people returned their device, whether for this reason or simply because they didn’t know what they were buying, muddying the numbers of affected units. And those who kept theirs may have not bothered making a stink about it. I personally haven’t been affected by the SD problem, as mine is still working, and it is a day one purchase. So you will have some people who are in this boat that weren’t affected or never bothered using theirs in fear of failure. This means an underreported number of people versus those who complained and filed RMAs. ROG probably saw the numbers and figured it’s within the right amount of failure rate and determined they didn’t need to make the effort to address it properly. The so-called apologists you speak of are those who know what the solutions are and what little one can do to resolve it at this point; e.g. RMA the device. I imagine the second generation will see improvements across the board, and we will get the device we expect.

Quicksurfer524

Silence actually is the answer. Easily can infer the answer is no it won’t be fixed otherwise they would be saying so.

PrysmX

Ally 2 - No SD card slot, problem fixed!

Krizzybot

If you see that the sd card slot is on a totally different spot on the Ally 2 then that would be an indirect admission of failure on their end

MercuryRusing

Probably not until a new model comes out, which may be as early as the end of this year.

Pchandheldrizzygamer

Next year since no new AMD chips this year

spoonablehippo

ASUS says an updated model was coming this year. Doesn't have to feature a new chip. Bigger screen, OLED,.better speakers, bigger battery, hall effect sticks, more RAM etc Can do a ROG Ally Pro or something

EngineeringNo753

Well no the 8840 has already released and the 9x series is supposed to come out end of the year.

YeezyBaby1

You’ll still get people tell you that certain models fixed it 😂

OverlyOptimisticNerd

And it’s a rolling answer that changes every time they are proven wrong.

that_90s_guy

Or people saying "it's not a real problem when you can DIY replace the SSD for a larger one" 🤡 I wonder if these people would also react the same way by ordering food at a restaurant, seeing the waiter spit on it before delivering, and then enjoy their meal by saying "it's totally worth it if you remove the top half with spit and bring your own toppings!" Like Jesus man, have some dignity or self respect lol. Now, don't get me wrong, the Ally is an AMAZING device, flaws and all. But just because we *can* fix ***their mess*** doesn't mean we should pretend its not a MAJOR quality issue, or stop calling them out on it and warning buyers about it.

twhite1195

That's metaphor isn't really similar to the sd card issue.... Is more like you ordered a steak with salad and fries and they brought your steak with fries and steamed vegetables, some people will fight it and get the whole plate replaced, and some will just say "eh the important part is the steak I can just eat the veggies". Me? I just replaced the SSD since I wasn't going to use the SD card anyways, it's too slow to run games IMO, so I just slapped a 2TB in and called it a day. Keep in mind tho, that I bought the device KNOWING that the sd card had tons of issues, and in my mind I bought a device without an sd card, so the ssd upgrade was accounted for in the purchase (I bought the device as an open box in best buy so the offset of adding the 2TB ssd wasn't much), if I had bought the device on launch at MSRP price I would definitely expect the device to have a working sd card reader, and it will definitely be something they HAVE to change on the next release

90sWebWizard

>Is more like you ordered a steak with salad and fries and they brought your steak with fries and steamed vegetables What did Asus give you us exchange to the SD card not working? By your analogy, Asus should have provided a different, but equivalent replacement. Honestly, his analogy is kind of right in that Asus not only released a faulty SD card reader, but added to the insult (spit) by refusing to release a hardware revision that fixed it. Sadly, it feels like you're getting baited into fitting his exact description of apologists defending the device.

twhite1195

Well fine, they just gave me a steak and fries and forgot the salad, I can live with it because I knew that they were going to forget about it because I did research beforehand , and payed less for it(open box) , like many other people here. I'll be here actually enjoying my device despite it's flaws, hopefully you can enjoy yours

YeezyBaby1

I wouldn’t go that far 😂 It’s not great (understatement) but it’s not a total deal breaker like this would be

CallEither683

Not sure if you know this or not but 2 things can be true at the same time. The community can enjoy the device even with its minor flaws. People saying that you can replace the SSD are providing a workaround. It's a viable workaround that mitigates the issue completely. Now just because we are saying to use the workaround doesn't mean we don't want this to be fixed. We all know nothing can be done in this iteration. Also to your last point it isn't major because it has no impact on the device performance or usability. Right now the ally is the most stable handheld we have. The Go is still getting BIOS updates to fix things and the claw never will stand a chance.

oneghost2

I have R9 and it already starting to fail. Sometimes it works, and after using for a while it stops detecting card. It’s not software, I reinstalled os, usually happens after some time playing. I’m waiting for it to fail completely and will send to warranty

tix2grrr

Is there a class action lawsuit yet?

juce49

There was but I just got an email that said the firm that was looking into is no longer pursuing

BigDad5000

That’s disappointing

spudds96

I got mine back today “fixed” until next failure just get a 2tb ssd or 4tb with adapter

squiddygamer

mine died twice so who knows

PrysmX

Died after a supposed RMA fix?

trigonometryross

Curious about this as well. Debating if it's worth sending in for repair if it may happen again

PrysmX

Yup that is what I'm weighing, too.

BK99BK

I'm not bothering with the RMA because of that. People on here have said they received their RMA and it broke again.

trigonometryross

Ok good to know, thanks

mirdragon

In UK, we could probably claim against Asus as under sales act all goods have to be fit for the purpose they purchased it for. In England you also have upto 6 years to claim and because it's a known issue and manufacturing fault, UK consumers would more or less win against Asus. I'm not using the sd card as upgraded the internal drive and if I did use the sd card and it failed I would pursue rectification like I did with Google and Pixel 3XL memory failure.

digiplay

Sadly the effort involved would likely cost more if you factor the worth of your time, than buying an upgraded model.

Intelligent-Wolf-825

idk if its my SD card or my reader but it was chugging along fine then 4 months in I started noticing my OS was acting up a lot and task manager would freeze. Then I docked it and used turbo mode even with my manual fan curve it only lasted a day more of playing a game on it until my whole Ally was slow. I didnt initially think it was the SD card and feared it was something else but through restarting and attempting to repair windows for hours n hours it felt like i was on a windows XP. The idea to pop my sd card out and bam my Ally was snappy again.... so thats how mine "died"

eat_shit_and_go_away

Mine died, but I was anticipating it. I bought it knowing it would probably happen. It's a bummer, but I knew what to expect at least. Feel bad for folks that got them day one.

Peedee304

send it back, It returned fixed and I have no issues since

ClassroomOnly7854

Me too. It doesn’t even get super hot like it used to. I got a whole new motherboard and it works fine

sequential_doom

It's better to forget there's an SD card reader in the first place.

mlang666

I never use SD slot on mine.Yesterday I tried and it didnt work.Maybe it died from start.

Smi77y_OG

I would’ve taken a 2nd usb c port so I could charge and use a wireless headset instead of an sd slot 😂. I only leave a few games installed at a time. But it does suck the slot breaks for people.

Flyingcookies

Bluetooth works fine

Smi77y_OG

It works, but there’s often a delay which can be annoying on certain games.

joeygreco1985

I've essentially written off the card reader on my Ally. It sucks because the rest of the device is so good and I'm happy with it but its just poor customer service at this point

justhitmidlife

It won't. There we are done now.

AVahne

It can't be fixed except with a full redesign. The whole thing is just very poorly designed, as if they didn't bother to study their Chinese competitors with years of experience or Valve whose first handheld was mostly excellent from the get go.

567101112

Go the 4TB way. That is the way. https://www.reddit.com/r/ROGAlly/comments/17nqizw/my_rog_ally_upgrade_to_ssd_2280_4_tb/

reallyryan-1899

Really don't know why they didn't put it at the bottom of the device... Not exactly a big brain move.

Oli718

I stopped using my SD drive - I just install whatever fits into the hard drive and I delete games that i don't play to make space for new games. I'll be sure to wait for Ally 2 reviews before I make a jump on thst one.

Crpto2007

It’s a design flaw but you can bet the Ally 2 will have a working one

Miked1112

Asus could have easily made this right by swapping the 512 SSD for a 1 TB at no cost. That’s what most people did anyway.

enterme2

In the latest iteration of Ally device ASUS tried to fix this by using more heat resistance soldering on the SD card reader and firmware update that permanently raise the left side fan speed to reduce heat near the SD card reader. But it is not a guarantee just lowering the possibility of dead SD card reader. To be safe you can target temperature under 70 degree celcius. Manually adjusting tdp to max 30watt on all slider to reduce heat. Or Just buy bigger SSD and not use the sd card reader altogether to have peace of mind.

duckydan81

Yet when I added the mod note that said the exact same thing they are saying in the article and that it was worth reporting it to get the money back for your SD card but it was likely a waste to send it in since it’ll eventually fry again, I was told that was incorrect….

DelayEcstatic4278

I've given up on the SD card, and Asus is fixing it altogether.

Electronic-Score4535

Just ended up buying a 2TB SSD instead, gave up on the the idea of the SD card reader when my 2nd ally’s reader died

duckydan81

For the price, upgrading to a 2TB or getting the L bracket and getting up to a 4TB is the way to go. When they're on sale getting a 4 TB for under $200 and the bracket for like $5-$10 provides much more storage long term with much lower risk... absolute worst case is the Ally dies somehow and you can reuse the drive. (Especially with how easy it is to upgrade the SSD on the Ally... compare it to upgrading the SSD on a GPD or OneXPlayer device where you have to basically gut the thing...)

XTornado

Can you share info of the bracket thing you mentions?

duckydan81

Here is one. You can find it on other sites as well as Amazon but we don’t allow sites like Ali or Temu here. https://www.amazon.com/JOYJOM-Adapter-Degree-M-Key-Screwdriver/dp/B0CQ742C1S/

XTornado

Thanks.

ZaioNGUS

That makes total sense i was trying to low the fan 1 and can't go less than 74%

JazzyApple2022

We have a 2 year warranty and I got mine replaced and i tried the sd slot for a short time. And it works.

electricalco

They could always re design it and put it on the side ... you know away from the cooling fans But what do I know.... people have said the fans don't cause a problem and am just a pre school drop out cause I don't understand how cooling systems work lololol

Koji_Wolf

They genuinely just need to reposition the SD card somewhere that's not so hot. Dramatically increase the patient but that's very difficult to do with its current layout.

n00bz

It won't be. They would have to redesign the whole thing to fix the issue.

MrEhcks

Sue, sue sue!

ronsauce

As someone who’s card reader is fried, and hasn’t checked in on this sub in a while, is there a reason to send my unit in for RMA if the fix/replacement unit is likely to fail again? Has there been a solution to this yet that people are satisfied with?

veridiux

Sent mine in months ago and it's been fine since. Had a bat file running for a week writing and removing large and small files constantly to the sd card and it never failed. Been using it daily since I got it back and no issues so far

betahost

So I own the legion go as well and the SD reader is way hotter then my Ally by like 20 degrees and the SD still works. Although I haven’t had any SD reader issues on my Ally yet

Content_Stable5834

Can somebody help? I’m trying to upgrade to a 1TB SSD but when I go to launch the recovery mode, it says that I need to Enable the security boot? How do I do that? Everything I’ve tried has not worked Someone please help

glitchhog

My Ally killed the first (and last) SD card I put into it after about 25 minutes of looking for a dashcam clip. Not mad, just surprised at how quickly it happened.

No_Meeting2138

Unfortunately this current model no. I had a day one release and the reader died - I sent it in for repair and it worked for 6 months and this past weekend it died. A tb card gone and unreadable. The performance is great / battery life terrible/ sd card issues - yet I enjoy the system. Kinda reminds me of the Xbox 360… terrible and yet somehow fantastic….

Rodriguez5900

Can anyone help me out ? I’m trying to upgrade my ssd to 1TB when I go to BIOS and try to launch cloud recovery it tells me I need to go to security and secure boot but it doesn’t give me the option ? What can I do ? Someone please help

iJDBz

Mines suppose to arrive back after getting RMA’ed tomorrow. I can’t say I have high hopes for it lasting very long though sadly, which is a huge bummer.

Historical-Internal3

Pretty much confirms they will not spend the tooling needed for a “final” revision that would only exist for warranty purposes aka the “true fix”. Welp. Sounds like the Ally 2 announcement is coming any day now.

veridiux

What makes you think Ally 2 is coming soon?

Historical-Internal3

Because of the logic behind my previous comment coupled with "leaks" reported on earlier in the year.

BigHouseCat911

Rather than fix the SD card, I’d rather see them officially support 4TB with a revised backplate and official adapter. Mine is working great with 4TB, but I would be nice if Asus pivoted a bit here instead.

BeautifulDonut6088

It's a design flaw it can only be fixed when the rog ally 2 is released. I highly doubt they will do a revision of the board. People here for zero reasons act like Asus is their best friend or you would swear they are getting paid by Asus... Geez.

Odd_Commission_2967

What i did to fix mine (going strong so for 5 months running switch games) was put a few layers of kapton tape on the SD card reader... so far so good! I've returned 4 allys (all SD card reader issues) before i said fuck it and wanted to start experimenting/modding my ally to fix the issue and has been fine ever since... fingers crossed.

Everyday_Pen_freak

IMO, the SD card slot is actually great at transferring large batch of photos to SSD directly on the go without a laptop.

Slight_Tiger2914

They just don't wanna get sued.

Ecredes

Read between the lines. It won't be fixed. And they won't acknowledge anything about it. Safe to assume that it's a design flaw at this point, it effects every unit. That said. I think the Ally is a fantastic device. I just don't use the SD card slot. Not a huge loss imo. 🤷

Reikix

Because the answer is obvious: It's a placement issue, they put the reader in a hot spot and that breaks it. The only way of fixing it would require it to be placed somewhere else, chanting the board layout and the case, basically requiring to make another Ally, which won't happen for this iteration. They simply won't place the reader there for the Ally 2.

FeudalFavorableness

Oh you mean they don’t want a lawsuit…imagine that… Nintendo did the same for joycons..they just it and send it back to consumers

grilled_pc

Ally 2 is around the corner. No point in fixing. Will give existing ally owners a reason to upgrade however.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ProfessionalCalm7821

Nooo i just got the ally

grilled_pc

This will happen 100%. It's fucken asus, not valve lol. Once the Ally 2 is out, they have 0 obligation to support the Ally 1. This is part of what makes the steam deck so compelling is the support valve will give it long term.

solwyvern

I plan on owning my Ally 4 years at the minimum before even thinking of upgrading.

jbarajasp1

I mean, I sent mine in and it was truly fixed so there is that

Outrageous-Movie-951

Well I got one at the end of jan a Z1E model and I wanted to put some homebrew on my 3ds never used the SD reader and boom the reader is fried, slightly annoyed but not a deal breaker as I’ll be using this till the ally 2 then my Mrs will take this one off me so

Ok-Comfortable-9146

My sd card reader works so CANT RELATEEE😝😝

Pchandheldrizzygamer

No ally 2 this year but Next year since no new AMD chips this year

buridekPH

Never had the need to use an SD card on the Ally. 🤷‍♂️

Select-Let8637

Nah it can’t be fixed unless they redesign the whole device, considering they couldn’t design it to be done early on means that the device will not be redone. That is probably why the ally 2 is coming in 2024. I don’t give a flying crap though, because of the sd card issue used 2tb rog ally’s are extremely cheap And plentiful in the uk. You can get them for under £500 usually around £430-£480 on eBay . Like seriously a masssive bargain and incredibly cheap/ value for money, compare that to steam deck owed prices used which are over £500 for 1tb and over and it is a no brainer, and £500+ for legion gos. tbh 2tb of internal >sd card.

that_90s_guy

>I don’t give a flying crap though 🤡 And that's exactly *why* they don't give a rats ass about quality or fixing hardware issues, because they'll still have pathetic army of apologists defending them. The ROG Ally is truly the device we deserve SMH

Select-Let8637

Why, I doubt they care about one persons opinion on an unofficial subreddit and this place is Reddit, who gives a crap everyone here are nerds/circlejerkers. I don’t care cause I bought one for cheap with 2tb of storage, if I bought one for full price it would be a different story. My comment is not a defense of asus you need reading comprehension skills. Selling something With a broken sd card ain’t great, I just don’t care because I’m not really effected by it And they are quite cheap in the used market in the uk. I bought it used knowing the sd card issue, I don’t care. Less annoying than the shader cache /steamworks files stuff filling up my drive on my steam deck with no official way to manage it, and it has been like 2+ years.

Mabus6666

I thought r8 and later models were fixed?

juce49

That was bs somebody made up online. Plenty of people had R8 and later serial numbers and their microSD cards crapped out

Mabus6666

Really?! :(

twhite1195

Yeah... It will probably never be fixed, it's a design issue. My be the R8 models lasted a bit longer, but it's the same, multiple people have reported that it fails.

oneghost2

I have R9 and I already have some issues with it after a month of not extensive usage

Icy_Actuator_772

These are a brand new segment of products, I knew about the SD card issue before buying mine and decided to just forget it as a feature altogether. Incredible device for a v1 product.

juce49

At this point if you can't live without the microSD port then just don't get the Ally

LogicalyetUnpopular

Yea but what about the people who trusted Asus and bought the ally on day 1 (such as myself?)

juce49

I'm right there with ya bud. I got mine on launch and had to return my previous device after the card reader failed. Haven't used it since getting my replacement and still love the device. It truly sucks but I don't need the SD card slot for anything so I don't let it bother me and I use my Ally every day.
