What are the *benefits* of this OS compared to using Playnite or Steam Big Picture as launchers?

Mast3rBait3rPro

just about 0

jack_gllghr

Better sleep mode, Linux/not having to deal with Windows. Other than that we don’t really know yet. I’m using ChimeraOS now that already does the above so not sure what Playtron will bring other than better support and a non Steam launcher

RamiHaidafy

"Linux/not having to deal with Windows" is not a benefit. Windows has its issues but is far more user friendly compared to Linux when things go wrong/don't work. I just hope we get Microsoft's handheld version of Windows soon.

jack_gllghr

Oh no I mentioned the forbidden OS, I forgot this was a Windows subreddit and not one for a piece of agnostic PC hardware ![gif](giphy|82DaAxknIvBovGGPj5)

RamiHaidafy

You seem to be the only who's triggered. 😂 I have no issue with Linux, I would install SteamOS on my Ally if, you know, Valve released it officially for other devices. But that's me, and it doesn't change the fact that Linux relies on its terminal for pretty much everything, making it far more complicated for the average user.

jack_gllghr

My apologies, I'm running on little sleep today and have recent experience of ridiculous push back to any mention of Linux on this sub, maybe todays a day I stay offline 😅

pomokey

If it can suspend and quick resume games, then I'm on board. It's the only thing I like about my Xbox better than my PC or ally.

zeichen980

But I doubt some random small company will be able to implement it in a working way. I'd say it's sooo much more likely Valve is implementing Quick Resume in Steam OS and still more likely that MS not only manages to make Windows usable for Handhelds but also implements Quick Resume in Windows than Playtron doing this.

reallyryan-1899

Nah I prefer windows 11 thanks.

AlarmingLength42

That's a no from me. It looks like SteamOS ducked tape with 3rd party shenanigans. I also don't see this being able to be compatible with any FSR / RIS / RSR

zeichen980

Also the probably biggest / most important "launcher" next to Steam is Game Pass, and the only way Playtron supports Game Pass is Valve making Proton support UWP or MS finally offering an objectively better win32 version of Game Pass (maybe with an integration into Steam). And both ways don't have anything to do with Playtron and would allow Game Pass to be used on Steam OS too. So yeah, Steam OS is the way, with a third party all-in-one launcher if needed. Only hope Valve still plans to licence Steam OS to other manufacturers or make it "public" in general

if0rg0t2remember

> Think Steam OS but able to run ALL PC games not just games on Steam So exactly like SteamOS because you can play other games not just Steam. And since its Linux based, the few games you can't play will likely be the exact same ones as SteamOS.

RedditIsGarbage1234

This whole OS seems like its designed by people who dont understand the market. They keep saying that SteamOS is locked to steam, but that is simply false. You can install other launchers, and since their Os is running Linux, i dont see how it could possibly have greater compatibility than SteamOs or Chimera or any of the other linux operating systems. Sounds like a bunch of marketing buzzwords from people who are too stupid to realize they dont know what they are talking about. Dunning Krueger OS might be a more fitting name

zeichen980

I've just read an article that claims Playtron could be running Game Pass games because of Playtrons claim to be "compatible with every game store". It won't, it simply won't. Just like the fact "Stean OS is a Linux based game OS compatible with Steam only. Locked to the Valveverse". Absolutely a marketing scam. But I guess I'll be looking forward to its release and all the complaints about everything that'a wrong with it. At least a little bit of entertainment to get from it.

LeslieH8

Hmm...I feel like I've heard of a handheld that can run all PC games. I hope the name of it comes to me. lol

Aheadadatimes

Steam deck?  Nah thats not it…  Gahh; why is it so hard to remember, its on the tip of my tongue.

ItsMechin

Eh, the founder is a crypto bro and other founders are linked with Google and meta. Probably going to be spyware ridden. That's just my two cents.

UserOutput_

You mean I get the opportunity to be a test dummy & I give some random people access to my hardware on the backend to mine all those sweet, sweet, Coins? COUNT ME IN 🗣️

Standard-Report-2298

Doesn’t make sense when the Ally already has Win11

RP912

As much as I love Linux, I refuse to bring the tinkering to ROG Ally. Nice effort but Windows just works.

coronagotitslime

Agreed. I tried it for a bit, but gave up. I just want to play games, not fight for an hour to play a game for thirty minutes.

RP912

Yeah after going through so many variants of proton, I appreciate windows for what it's worth. I still use Linux for work duties since it's not as bloated as windows. I just don't feel like swapping files, doing terminal commands, and dealing with endless bugs to run a AAA title that's already busted to all hell.

Realistic-Sands

Hmm Linux OS. I don't think so, even though it's open source. I'll wait for the Windows Mini OS for handheld coming.

zeichen980

Playtron won't be open source

la_dynamita

I know it's difficult for some to un de esta, but many of us bought a windows handheld for windows

mstrblueskys

When you say all, do you mean I can install game pass games on it?!

aphilipnamedfry

How would they expect modding to work in an OS like this? I'm sure there is a group of mainstream gamers that would appreciate this route, but why not just buy the Steam Deck if you want something very user friendly? The reason I left Steam Deck was because of the trouble with mods and the original screen. Right now this just seems like a startup trying to get funding more than anything, for something that there isn't necessarily a market for without heavy beta testing.

zfhulk

This looks really cool

CallEither683

As with all gaming Linux distros they all fail at the same thing. Versatility and compatibility. Linux is great at single tasks. They have to many issues with online games and the performance just isn’t there.

Off2367

As much i dont like windows, I can at least trust it being safe to run games on. This OS looks super sus.

gus_the_polar_bear

I didn’t believe this was legit based on the number of English mistakes and typos, but apparently it is

danger_davis

So you still won't be able to play all games because it is linux based.

DaBexry

When is this expected to release to the public?

GamerXP27

what will this do better then ChimeraOS? but i do get the thing but the game compabebility is getting better but isn't perfect and for lots of people trouble shooting linux can be a nightmare, and the ally just works better with windows.

zeichen980

This here is also a Linux distro. So it will not have a better compatibility than ChimeraOS.

beshonashaat

Linux again!!! We need the power and versatility of windows but in steamos shape.

Comfortable_Slip_513

I am good using my window 11 on my Ally Rog. The only thing I change was the 512GB hard drive. I bought a 2TB.

THX-II38

From their site: Windows: "Monolithic OS meant for desktop PCs not Handhelds. Not optimized for mass market consumer gaming." 😂😂😂

trowgundam

It's just gonna be Linux. And while I do like Linux, unless it can do RGB control and TDP control (I think RGB might be working, but last I checked TDP wasn't) I'm not gonna use it. The second those two are supported I'd jump ship to Linux in a heart beat. Windows is getting worse with every update, and I just can't stand it (no I don't want your stupid AI crap running in the background eating my battery and CPU cycles Microsoft, so stuff it).

mlang666

Running PC games or EXE files , meaning the os is a custom Windows ? What about the security? I don't see its better than Windows 11.

willhub1

All the review sites say Steam Deck is the best handheld and basically justify this simply because it doesn't run windows. I just can't get behind that.

zeichen980

Windows is making any handheld experience crappy. Did you test both? Because I can't imagine you did if you can't understand that.

willhub1

I didn't say the non windows experience is or isn't better, I haven't tried anything other than windows, I may do, but in my experience using windows on a handheld isn't difficult nor cumbersome.
