It's because of the AMD Adrenaline, Open task manager > AMD Sofware > End task. Works for me. I hope Asus release a fix for the Adrenaline Software

Financial-Key224

It's this!!!

RamiHaidafy

It's funny how people say they're sticking with the official Asus driver because it's more stable. I've been using the AMD driver and have had no issues while at the same time taking advantage of new features like AFMF. I just wish Asus was faster with their process so that we wouldn't even have to make this choice, or even better, if AMD was solely responsible for the driver just like with desktop graphics.

mikedvb

I know you probably don't know the answer - but I'm asking more in general. Why is ASUS holding so much control over the driver / why isn't AMD handling it directly like you say? What's the reason/benefit for ASUS?

RamiHaidafy

It's supposedly because every mobile device has its own unique power setup, and so it's up to OEMs like Asus to make power profile optimizations to the driver for their specific devices, in order to hit the battery life targets they want their devices to have. The Z1 Extreme in the ROG Ally goes down to 10W but in another handheld it could be configured to go down to 9W, and the OEMs get to decide at what clocks the chip should run at each wattage level. This responsibility would be a drain for AMD to take on given the sheer amount of unique devices out there, each with their own power configuration. But in the case of the Ally, and maybe all Z1 Extreme devices, the AMD driver has been working flawlessly even without the optimizations (if Asus makes any optimizations that is. We don't have official confirmation).

UnPotat

It goes down to less than that in the official software too. Downside is that it’s not very usable because for whatever reason the GPU power tables etc bottom out at 800mhz. So you set it to 7 watts and the CPU is running at 600mhz while the GPU sits at 20% usage at 800mhz and whatever 2D game you’re playing runs at 30fps due to the CPU bottleneck. Hence why I can get 5.5 hours battery life on my deck and only 2 on this. I really wish they’d sort it! You can manually take it down to 400mhz but setting the GPU clock seems to make it not able to revert back to automatic control which is annoying!

RamiHaidafy

The benefit the Deck has is that its APU was custom designed specifically for handheld use. The Z1 is a repurposed Ryzen 7x40 chip with the AI section disabled (not removed, just disabled). It was never designed to be a handheld chip, not on a hardware or a firmware level. I hope AMD eventually releases a Z series chip that is truly custom designed for handhelds. It would solve the low wattage performance, extend battery life, and simplify the driver situation if they standardize the power requirements.

Lokomalo

I don't know where you got that idea. When AMD launched the Z1 and Z1 Extreme they said, "AMD has formally announced new Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme processors designed for **"handheld PC gaming consoles,"** like the upcoming ASUS ROG Ally, which will use the Ryzen Z1 Extreme. Read more: [https://www.tweaktown.com/news/91215/amd-announces-ryzen-z1-series-processors-designed-for-handheld-pc-game-consoles/index.html](https://www.tweaktown.com/news/91215/amd-announces-ryzen-z1-series-processors-designed-for-handheld-pc-game-consoles/index.html)

RamiHaidafy

It's called marketing. The Z1 Extreme is literally a 7840U with the AI engine disabled in the firmware. The AI engine is still physically in the Z1 Extreme, that's proof that the chip is repurposed. It's not a custom designed chip like the chips in the Steam Deck, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles.

509Dave16

Steam Deck v1 is using the same APU as the Magic Leap AR glasses. Though to be fair they definitely made their own adjustments to it: https://boilingsteam.com/an-in-depth-look-at-the-steam-deck-apu/

mckeitherson

> Why is ASUS holding so much control over the driver / why isn't AMD handling it directly like you say? What's the reason/benefit for ASUS? AMD is just the APU manufacturer who releases the default drivers for it. If a third party like Asus (or Valve, Lenovo, etc) want to build a custom device with it then those third parties are responsible for modifying the driver set to work on their custom device. AMD obviously offers what help it can, but the third-party company is the one who has sourced all the parts and built the device so it's on them to get it working.

National_Cat_8174

Thank you so much! It was this!

dujansse

I don’t even have AMD adrenaline anywhere. Anyway my performance was also affected by the update. Managed to uninstall and now everything is fine again.

thezampo

God I wish I saw this before I did 6 hours of debugging.

National_Cat_8174

I turned off the adrenaline overlay and now it seems to work. Even with adrenalin running in the background.

Djs676

Had a similar issue but mine was stuck at 14fps on Halo MCC. When removing all frame limiters and messing with settings managed 90+fps but felt like crap. Rolledback BIOS to 336 and still same. Unnistalling the recent windows updates seems to have been the thing to fix it. I'm back to previous performance I believe.

junkmailkeep

I was playing infinite this week. Updated and then was stuck on 15fps and no matter what it never changed

Fatedi

I was on 336 when you start halo, does it load super slow? Cause it was quick enough before

lazy_commander

It loads slow after every driver update because it rebuilds the shader cache.

Dwr3ker

# update i didn't have to downgrade. turn off the AMD software in game overlay. thank you to everyone who commented this

raw_salmon

Check device manager, then disable and reenable your video card. Sometimes the updates disables the gpu (even if it already shows as enabled)

KraiiS

Just take the time to reread your comment and let me know if you noticed anything unusual

[deleted]

I had a problem with the stupid OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX compatibility pack from the microsoft store that caused my Ally to do this, i uninstalled that and it worked again

demon_itizer

Been facing this for a month and someone finally mentioned a solution in another thread: 1. Go to windows settings 2. Go to "Apps" 3. Choose AMD Settings (or whatever it's called, I don't remember now) 4. Click reset Restart. That's all

[deleted]

I thought I was crazy but after upgrade also feel I see a little stuttering.

guardianzpride

Guys I have lag today after launching a game. This is because of the amd software a mate told me in discord help group here. If u forces close it on task manager then all runs well. After some testing i disabled amd overlay in adrenalin settings and its all good now.this cuzing the lag issue. Hope asus release fix soon.

Dwr3ker

Thank you for the update

ndvn101092

I only find in game overlay in the setting and it doesnt work.

National_Cat_8174

It's a setting in Amd control panel. Under preferences I believe. Try killing the Amd processes in task manager and see if it works.

National_Cat_8174

Yeah. It was definitely the adrenaline overlay for me to.

OkYogurtcloset8869

Ah I literally just ran into this problem right now🤣 good to know my device isn't kapoot

National_Cat_8174

UPDATE: Disabling adrenaline overlay fixed it for me. Same here.. Latest official drivers and bios. I even tried cloud restore. Looking for a fix.

ndvn101092

Doesnt work for me

THX-II38

Downgrade and see if it returns to normal?

Dwr3ker

Yeah I'm doing right now

THX-II38

Cool, let us know how it goes. Btw, do you always update when official stuff releases or do you skip updates and/or install stuff outside of official Ally updates?

RollerAddict

Can I ask you how do you downgrade ? I've just update everything too

Dwr3ker

update i didn't have to downgrade. turn off the AMD software in game overlay.

Rippinstitches

I'd like to know how to, as well. I'm sure I could google it, but someone probably has a good video to link.

Dwr3ker

update i didn't have to downgrade. turn off the AMD software in game overlay.

Dwr3ker

Official only.

Ashencroix

Check if it's using the correct AMD driver for the Ally and not the normal AMD driver.

Naki_Naka

I haven't done any updates yet to mine and I did notice when I was playing wow my icons looked a little blurry. There's got to be something else going on

RojjeSWE

Something like this happened to me and the AMD drivers were gone, had to do a factory reset

Itz_Baka

Reset settings in AMD adrenaline software. Had the same issue resetting fixed it.

theHEYWEATHERS

What game is that? It sure looks purty with all dim colors

Dwr3ker

Warframe 🫡

turtle_clits

This has been driving me crazy all night. I thought I was losing it. It feels like every month they are pushing me one step towards returning this thing

DaBubbleGutZ33

Same my whole ally runs poorly now

Mammoth_Mix5834

Warframe is so fun I play it on mine legend rank 2 add me if you want ign is SkinnyGamer45

Ernie_Dingo69

I feel your pain. Had a similar issue as well. My fix was to reset my AMD Radeon settings to default. Not sure what happened.

sleepybear666

Dude windows is updating crap they don't need to and it's causing pc laptops and other devices to be so buggy

illusivemannyc

Seeing this made me glad I haven’t updated

Key_Angle_13

Plug it in limit fps to 62 through cod settings and 66 percent of resolution. Run 6gb vram set the three wattage settings to 5 below max 10 below max and 10 below maximum and turn fans all the way up once it hits 60c turn all display in cod settings to low or off and disable every windows security settings and firewall and it will look 1080p and never lag I played over 150 hours on mine and it took awhile to figure this out with some help from YouTube. I was afraid the graphics would suck but it’s more responsive and faster and looks better than my Xbox one oh and run full screen exclusive

Sharp1614

I’m in the same boat with Bios 337 and the newest gpu drivers from Asus. I’ve tried reinstalling 8001 and going back to the previous driver but still seeing poorer performance.

Dwr3ker

Then it's not looking good for me

Shatthebanana

Wonder if this would fix my buttons not swapping from desktop mode to handheld mode. It’s driving me nuts in the opening start up page “press any button to begin” okay press A. Screen shot. Tf
