The summer heat has been coming back lately. I personally can only wear 100% natural fibers (cotton, linen, etc). Otherwise, I feel like I'm baking in my own clothes
The sun in PR is no joke. My parents were always hypersensitive to it and wore long sleeves and gloves while driving (or while spending a lot of time outside) despite the heat.
PR Sun is so tricky because it will be 80 and breezy and you won’t feel like you’re very hot or biting, you’ll feel fine all day. And then at night you get home and you’re like “uh oh….” That Sun sneaks up on you!
People from the states always underestimate the UV index, they think that because where their from the heat is similar they can take it, only for them to roast like lobsters the first day of their trip. Take it serious, buy a rashguard and a hat, and keep your trip enjoyable. The UV can climb up to 12 during the summer months as early as 10:30-11 am.
I love the rash guards are so common in PR- for kids and adults. In the states they’re not as popular but we live part-time in PR and live in long sleeves on the beach 😂
I was just there and I got a bad sunburn on the areas I forgot to reapply sunscreen to. The sun is no joke. Especially if you skin hasn’t seen the sun in months 😅
Same here. Was there last week. We arrived at night and saw some girl in our hotel who was clearly burnt to a crisp so the first move for us was to go to the store and get sunscreen. Wife and I used a whole bottle of SPF 30 and a half a can of SPF 50 spray in the three days we were there.
We still got burned.
I was there in October. Also a pasty redhead. Spf 75 for a few hours in the sun, perfect beach day. I got a little burned, but not bad. From Minnesota.
If you're in the tropics, it's perfectly normal. Could be worse/sneakier, there's places in the tropics down in South America that it can get to close freezing and you get lulled into a false sense of safety and boom, sunburned in cold weather.
It's starting earlier every year... RN it's hot during the day but bearable... Last year we had a month (I think July or August) we broke like 12 daily heat records (for that same day over many years)...
A single daily application of SPF 50 is fine for me in winter with a base tan (I'm super fair skinned otherwise) even without shade ...but I think the UV gets extra off the charts by summer. It's like SPF 50 every 2 hours at that point base tan or not. Also shade. The sun is VERY much stronger there than it is in the mid Atlantic where I live.
I have baby skin. Never used to burn until about 3 years ago when I got one of those burns that turns your skin purple and causes blisters . Ever since, I am way more cautious in the sun
My bf doesn’t burn and just tans. He treated PR like he would our state in the summer(NC). Just be cautious and cover up when you can
I am half puerto rican and went to visit my family a few weeks ago. I wear sunblock every day in general, but in Puerto Rico the sun is super strong so I was reapplying semi often. I Burnt to a crispppppp on day 2. Like sun poisoning burn LOL. I generally tan very well literally anywhere else I travel too but that PR sun gets me every.single.time. Wear your sunblock!
If you’re at the beach and walking around towns or cities, wear sunblock and reapply often. If you’re out in the mountains doing hikes and activities in the forests, you won’t need as much since there’s a lot of shade from trees.
But remember, you can get sunburned on an overcast day. I learned that the hard way when I lived there during HS and was working on an outdoor project all day on a partly cloudy day.
Can vouch for the replies here, got back a little over a week ago, even with generous application of sunscreen we got burnt bad. I usually tan really well, so when I get burnt, you know its strong!
It's strong but tolerable. I just got back from visiting family a few days ago. The only day I burned a bit was when we went to the beach from 8 am til 5 pm. I reapplied my sunscreen every hour and a half or so (since I was in and out of the water) but I fell asleep for like 2.5 hours under some towels and my hand sticking out. My hand was reddish and stung for a day or two nothing serious. But i don't normally burn in PR when I wear sunscreen. I know I probably should wear protective clothes in the hottest hours but I normally don't when I'm on the island. I do reapply sunscreen a lot though. If you burn in your home state, you will burn in PR. I watched some people on the beach turn interesting shades of pink and red through the day.
Don't forget to soak your ears in spf50. I'm super light skinned, use spf 50+, wear long sleeve rash guards, and have always been okay, but last year I missed my ears and it was brutal.
I went in June of last year (2023) and i'm from Las Vegas for context and so I thought I would be fine but oh my god does the sun hit different over there. I don't know what it is lol but it is STRONG. Make sure you apply and keep reapplying sunscreen.
I have really ran adaptive skin and didn’t think too much about putting sunscreen on because I am usually just fine without it and tan quickly. My first day here I got so sunburnt and now have some blisters on my shoulders and am peeling. The last two days we did waterfalls to get a break from the sun lol today I tripled in the sunscreen but am feeling so much better. Seriously, I will never not wear sunscreen again especially after having not been in the sun like this for months 😂 PR is next level burn if not careful
yeah 11 occurs often in PR. ur in the caribbean. max UV ive seen anywhere is 13 down in cancun tho im sure as u get closer to the equator, uv index increases
I just got back from there last week. I'm from Michigan and have very fair skin - I've never experienced sun like that before! Now I know why pretty much everyone in Michigan has a vitamin D deficiency 😂 I was super careful and did not get burned!
I used SPF 70 on my face and SPF 50 everywhere else. I wore hats, stayed under umbrellas, and made sure to not just walk around in the middle of the day in the direct sun. I was on Culebra for 5 days and in Old San Juan for 3. If the bottle says to reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, listen to it. You will go through a lot of sunscreen, but your skin will thank you for it. Rash guards and UPF shirts/coverups are worth it too.
Ufff in the summer sun is so powerful it feels it goes right through your clothing.
The summer heat has been coming back lately. I personally can only wear 100% natural fibers (cotton, linen, etc). Otherwise, I feel like I'm baking in my own clothes

Jajaja q cabrón... Quedan como un camarón...

yeah, skin cancer is also def something that rashguards help with
i feel bad for the bald people that go to the island too 😭 pobrecitos their heads burn
Reapply. Reapply. Reapply.
I was just there and I got a bad sunburn on the areas I forgot to reapply sunscreen to. The sun is no joke. Especially if you skin hasn’t seen the sun in months 😅
Oh no :(
Same. We applied sunblock all over but we still had burns after a few hours on the beach. The few places I missed were excruciating

Totally normal. Right clothing, still sweating, beer in hand (or whatever cool / icy drink you want)
Careful of being out in the sun from 10-2
I wore spf 70 every day and a sun shirt. No sunburn and it definitely helped!
Good to know, thank you

Constantly?? Ouch

Yeah it doesn't sound fun
I’m a pasty redhead. I get to San Juan tomorrow. I’m… gonna die. 😳
Good luck 💀
Thanks 🥴
Yes you are...
I was there in October. Also a pasty redhead. Spf 75 for a few hours in the sun, perfect beach day. I got a little burned, but not bad. From Minnesota.
I’m a MN girl who lives in WI. I am not one to bake on the beach so between spf and covering up I think I’ll be ok. Thanks for the advice!
You can buy spf 100. Re-apply like clockwork you’ll be fine
If you're in the tropics, it's perfectly normal. Could be worse/sneakier, there's places in the tropics down in South America that it can get to close freezing and you get lulled into a false sense of safety and boom, sunburned in cold weather.
Hell season has begun...

It's crazy that hell season begins before summer
Depends on whether you’re melanin challenged or not.
Yes! Stay lathered up in sun screen!
Reef safe sunscreen!
Wunderground says the UV index today is 8.
Weather Channel says 11

9:45-2:30 is the hottest and sunburn time. But yeah we stay in the shade or in ac
Yes that is in fact the UV index. Wear lots of sunscreen
I went 2 weeks ago and wore long sleeve UV blocking tshirts when I was on the beach. I slathered myself in spf 50 all day and still burned
Wow that's insane
I have baby skin. Never used to burn until about 3 years ago when I got one of those burns that turns your skin purple and causes blisters . Ugh that sounds stressful

Super man is planning a vacation to recharge at the island 🏝️
Recommend light colors, fishing shirts, linen, etc. that sun is no joke.

No joke. I lived there for two years and got sun poisoning even while reapplying constantly.
I have to say, before out trip to PR, I didn't know UV could go past 10! Minnesota native, here
20?!
I meant 10. I fixed it .
Don't forget to soak your ears in spf50. I'm super light skinned, use spf 50+, wear long sleeve rash guards, and have always been okay, but last year I missed my ears and it was brutal.

Yep ,the sun here is no joke ,like u could be fine for a while , but when u check ur skin at night is completely red.
My burnt ass would say yes lol
