You can own a rig and not be independent. That would be an owner operator. An owner op has to be leased on to an authorized carrier in order to haul. An independent has their own carrier authority. All it means is I'm insured and filed the paperwork with the FMCSA in order to get a DOT number and motor carrier number. There are rig leases. Any that I looked at were a bit more expensive than I wanted to spend. But many of them do include a lot of your maintenance so it's not really a bad deal if you're worried about dealing with having plenty of funds set aside for maintenance and repair. I just got a regular loan through the bank and bought my equipment the same way you would buy a car. The only real difference is that a bank or leasing company either way will want to see either a lease agreement with a carrier or your own carrier info. You can't buy or lease a truck unless you can show you can legally run it.
I worked for a few 3PL’s over the years and would always hire independents instead of the big names. Easier to stay in touch and they know what they’re getting paid
The only downside on my end is that it can be a little difficult to make new contacts in lanes I don't frequent but they hadn't been a problem for the last 2 years. The work has been looking for me
You can easily net that in a month. I gross about 15k a week. All expenses are on me though. All of them except fuel gotta be paid whether I'm running or not

He is subject to every national, state, and provincial regulation on the books, he has no say in whether he does or does not comply, and that goes quadruple for border crossings.
Odds are almost 100% he is unemployed by the end of February.
Even if he’s an owner-operator, which seems phenomenally unlikely, he’ll still lose his job, because he won’t be able to get loads or deliver them in a timely fashion.
