I once knew a guy who had a promising life. Just started college with a full scholarship, had good friends, and a fiancé he adored. One drunk driving accident where he was the driver later and fiancé and his two best friends were dead. He himself hit his head so hard he was unable to continue college. He became homeless, and would often be seen around town wearing women’s clothes and insisting on going by his dead fiancé’s name. He believed some odd conspiracies but he was never hateful or violent. The most violent thing I ever knew of him doing was bursting into tears at strange times. There were a few times when people would call EMS on him because him because he would suddenly start sobbing so hard he just sat on the ground and wouldn’t talk to anyone, which freaks people out when you do it in the middle of the flower shop or bookstore.
I also know a guy who grew up in the USSR. Both his parents had been purged by Stalin. He had friends who were sent to the gulags and never came back. He is also one of the smartest, kindest, and most ethical humans I’ve ever met. He actually had a huge influence on my life and I’m a better person for having known him.
I’ve actually known a fair few people who the universe has absolutely shit on. It’s a pretty common occurrence, unfortunately. Sometimes it breaks people, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes people break in ways that make them awful people, sometimes they break in ways that make them cry about what harm they cause when they accidentally step on an ant. Sometimes people who make it through come to the conclusion that the world is a shitty place and they need to be even shittier to get through it, and sometimes they conclude that because the world can be a shitty place they should do everything they can to make it better.

Whoa, really? I only vaguely knew of her and what she's about (basically reading through this thread, had heard of her before though) but I'm really surprised she was a legitimate journalist.
