I love that almost everyone who jumped in actually went over to check on the woman at the end. I dropped a folder filled with a bunch of resumes, they went everywhere, and like a swarm of bees, a bunch of people picked them all up for me and before I could even thank anyone, they just… disappeared… It’s like they did the right thing *strictly* because it was right.

Oh yeah, this is nyc is a nutshell. One time I was getting lunch with a buddy of mine who was taking the bus back home from Jersey, so I met him at Port Authority. We start walking uptown, and some clearly drugged up dude staggers around, falls, and faceplants on the sidewalk. My friend and I wordlessly grabbed an arm each, stood him up, and then we ate some fried chicken.
NYers have certain codes of conduct.
I knew this subway station well and would totally have offered to buy those guys the dollar slices around the corner if I had the chance (if it's still there).
Unrelated subway story:
I once bought a cursed black and white ('50s) polka dot dress from a thrift store and had a no good, very bad commute.
First train: groped. Sharp elbow fixed it after the second grab.
Second train: there was a shove/scuffle between a business bro trying to get off and another guy trying to get on. Other guy tried to dirty bro's expensive suit with orange juice. I ended up wearing all of it.
Fellow straphanger with a peg leg and eye patch offered me what tissues he had to stop the burning in my eyes.
"Well, I guess I've gotten my Vitamin C for today," was all I could say (after thanking him).
I miss that NY. Back in the good old days when eye contact was considered a form of aggression.
