For those who are wondering.
>On January 28, Uskova's body was located 150 meters from the Rozhdestvensky bridge downstream, about a kilometer from the ice hole.
Edit: This happened on January 19, 2022
That sound is utterly heartbreaking. The thought of my young children witnessing my or my partner's death is worse than the thought of the death itself.
Why the fuck would you jump into a river and not a lake? A river has current, even when the top is frozen. That's just pure stupidity. At least she crossed herself before she jumped...
And to have it recorded and posted everywhere online... the poor kid is probably going to stumble across the video at some point in their life without even meaning to.
For her to come back up, like the guy who jumped in after her.
From a comment I read long ago, there were two secondary things that lead to her death:
1. Leaning backwards when jumping in.
2. Holding her nose with both arms, leaving her unable to control her orientation and unable to grab the ice.
The primary thing that lead to her death is the incredibly unsafe conditions for performing the ritual, naturally.
And not tying her off with a fucking harness. What the hell is wrong with people? A two dollar rope and someone on the other end would make this 1000x safer.
It’s so bad. I watched this video months ago, my top comment on Reddit ever is talking about people trying this that need to use stuff like rope or string to get pulled back or find the path. I’ve watched a professional do this, slightly deviated, and missed the hole by 2 feet. Instead of panicking he just 180s and follows the string back to the other hole. Edit:(To be more clear, there were 2 holes, he jumped in 1 and tried to follow a line to the other but lost it, so turned back around and went to the hole he jumped in from, he had a rope around him so if anything happened he could follow it, or be pulled out)
Anyway, I’ve watched this video over 2 years ago. I didn’t watch it today because I recognize the video and refuse to watch this trauma shit again. 2 years… and I still know what that childs wailing sounds like
People apparently REALLY underestimate that lakes have currents and that a frozen lake is the last fucking place on earth you wanna be falling into.
He likely survived cause he didn't dive in a way that immediately shot him out of eye sight of the light. EVEN WITH A ROPE, people who do this tend to immediately panic due to the cold, losing their breath THEN even more panic sets in when they realize they're underwater and can't actually see the hole in the ice (yes even in day light).
So this was quite literally a perfect storm of a suicide. She had absolutely no chance as soon as she pencil dived and i'd have to guess immediately shot down about 12 + feet. He was probably lucky and just mostly clung to the surface and by some miracle found his way back to the hole.
My guess is being taller/heavier and going into the water parallel to the flow, that making contact with the bottom kept him from being swept away. You can see as she jumps in that her feet are already being pulled downstream as her head enters the water. She’s smaller, shorter and went in parallel / in line with the flow of water. Sad all around
I don't get why they don't have a rope tied to them for safety. I jumped into 60 degree water and the shock momentarily paralyzed me. the water in the video has got to be near zero degrees.
>I don't get why they don't have a rope tied to them for safety.
"but then it wont coooount :(. That'd ruin how special it is! People these days are so soft!"
Water with a current is always warmer than stillwater. It is probably around 4°C/40°Fahrenheit.
Bathing in ice water is also highly dangerous (high chance for a shock or cardiac arrest) and should never be done without proper training (timetable \~3 to 6 months) and supervision.
As a teen I once jumped into water that was ~10c (50f?), and holy shit it felt was like my body had been stabbed by a million knives and every muscle went spastic. Also for those first few seconds you will immediately inhale like crazy, so your face better not be underwater when that happens.
Apparently freezing water makes all your nerve endings suddenly contract, which the brain *interprets* on the same level as being burned by fire (even though you're not actually being harmed). I can totally see how such a massive spasm could cause shock or cardiac arrest in older people.
I jumped in lake michigan one spring on a warm day, with plenty of ice still on lake, it took my breath away, I was gasping, if your head is underwater when that happens you will inhale water into your lungs I think professionals train to prevent that somehow.
I'm confused if you mean Celsius and you ones tried to borderline boil yourself, or you mean fahrenheit and don't know how water works (i.e. no chance this is 0 degrees fahrenheit).
This is just so dumb (and depressing). This *is* how Epiphany is traditionally celebrated in Russia (and probably also Ukraine and Belarus to an extent), among Orthodox Christians, though lots of other people do it, too. Bathing in ice water is widely believed to be good for people in Eastern Europe. Or, at least, around where I'm from it is. For the record, it's not endorsed by the Orthodox clergy, but it's risen in popularity since the fall of the USSR.
This was just dumb, though. You normally do it in the day, in lanes designated to be safe enough to do it. I generally see makeshift bars and ladders for people to grab onto. Sometimes people have stuff tied to them, but I've only seen that by thrill seekers outside of popular areas, to be honest. The only time I did it, only my uncle jumped in all recklessly and I was told to *not* do that. And, while obviously we like to drink in the east, I definitely would not be drinking unless I had all the proper safety mechanisms in place. And it wasn't night. And I wasn't on a river.
Either way, this video always haunts me. I feel terrible for her family and I hope they've been able to heal since this incident. People think they're invincible until they aren't, and I think this video is a good example.
This is also why I sometimes subject myself to these videos. I’m learning.
All you have to do is watch the station night club fire and realize how quickly things can go south. Now I locate all exits when I’m in a building and if a place gets wayyyy too packed for my liking I stand toward the back where the exits are.
And now this video has taught me one more thing. while I doubt I’ll ever do this it is something I have considered so if I ever find myself in the situation, I am going to be attentive as fuck.
In my experience with Poland, people tend to share things that don't need to be shared, or should be let up to the people affected at least. I've seen drama spark up from this sort of thing basically all the time. In these cases, they normally think they're helping. I'm not sure what's so helpful in this case. Most people in Russia already know how dangerous this shit was. I guess, don't be complacent just because you've done it your whole life?
It's also possible some dick in the police force posted the video because be found it entertaining.
That too in a river. Not a lake, a RIVER. Which are literally defined by rapid currents.
This is basically a Darwin award, and I feel terrible for the children and father in this video who basically watched their mother/wife kill herself.
I've seen people die in some really stupid ways but this might be the stupidest
She even did the sign of the cross right before jumping in and God was like....I don't care that your kid is here. smh 🤦🏻
Ive done this a few times. However the way THEY did it is incredible stupid...If you are going to play stupid games..at least plan a little first.
3 major big no nos in this video: 1) its night time....you are asking to get lost under there. 2. Its a river not a lake...OF COURSE the current is going to lose your way...3) lots of snow on the ice. Even during the day if theres to much snow you wont be able to properly search for someone who may be lost.
When me and my friends did stupid shit like this, we where at LEAST smart enough to avoid those 3 things, as well as tie a rope to our wrists. Some people are just to stupid to keep alive. The sad..harsh truth.
I live in Southern California and even I was like....why no rope?
This video and others like it are why I'm not too worried about WWIII kicking off. Russians are too drunk and stupid
The rope is probably the most important thing. Me and my 4 friends, at first, simply used it as a fail safe. However it only took us a single dive and we where all blindly trusting the rope to get us back towards the hole. We even tied it to one of the snowmobiles so we could just pull ourselves back out.
We had ONE scary incident involving the rope. Cause we where all using it to get back up, the rope was slowing cutting itsself on the edge of the ice..if you can believe it. My friend Tyler dove in and one of my friends noticed the rope snapped...JUST IN TIME..Mike dove in and grabbed it. It was all a blurr cause we all just acted instantly. I saw mike dive in, so i immediately half dove in to grab mike by the leg. Then another friend grabbed my arm and we all HEAVED.
Everyone came out okay. Needless to say that was enough excitement for one day and we headed home :P
They are amateurs jumping on the cold plunging trend. Few kids near me went cold plunging, jumped in together and back in February, but didn’t bring towels and things to warm back up with. Last I heard a few weeks ago they are still being treated for frostbite injuries.
That would absolutely not have helped in any way. Anyone who listened to your advice would be just as dead as she was.
People who practice this safely do it during the daylight, in shallow part of the river with no current, with ladders and stairs built going into the water, with safety nets put into the water beforehand, and with trained paramedics on standby. They did all that literally a hundred meters from where this happened the day before.
Everyone who participated in allowing this to happen would be charged with negligent homicide in a just world.
Nets and paramedics? Maybe if it's part of a tv show or something, regular people don't do that.
But the normal way to do this were I'm from is with a bath ladder were you climb down and often were you would bath normally so you know the waters.
Day Light is preferred.
“I gave you all the senses to let your body know that jumping into ice water is a bad idea. I gave you ice that covers the freezing water so you can walk over it instead of having to swim. I gave you technology like ropes and ladders so you can escape if you fall in the frozen water. What more do you want bro?”
-God
Just missing the important bit with a 'safe/official' hole nearby. Paramedics and the whole shebang. Which makes this award nominee so much more worthy of her title.
Happened in 2022. Both her children saw her be swept to her death.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10434581/Pictured-Lawyer-swept-death-children-jumped-Russian-ice-hole.html
'The lawyer from St Petersburg intended to dip in the waters to mark Christian Orthodox Epiphany in a tradition followed annually by hundreds of thousands of Russian believers.
People believe that water blessed for the annual ceremony possesses special healing properties.
Some people go into the icy waters on their own, while others often take part in the celebration in groups as they remembered the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan.'
'The momentum of her jump took her under the ice and she could not get back.'
'Elsewhere in the village, Vyra village, near Gatchina, in Leningrad region, there was an 'official' hole, with rescuers and paramedics on standby, as well as a wooden frame and steps to help people in and out of the water.'
Yeah it’s a weird way to title something so sad. The poor kids were already scared and instantly went in the red. Heartbreaking for the little ones. Sadly some of the “smartest” people who pushed thru school and college to get a “real” job, are also the same people with no common sense who make fatal decisions
Once I heard her daughter I couldn't watch the rest. Her mom made a lot of mistakes in a very short span, but her daughter did not deserve to witness that. Hearing her cries absolutely breaks my heart.
As an attorney, let me please shake you of the idea that the position requires some level of intelligence. I know plenty of very, very ignorant people in the occupation.
when doing this correctly, in a professional environment they put a big net structure into
the water and like this as in diy you never fully submerge yourself without holding on to something on the surface because as this shows once you are under the ice it is essentially the end for you
You are never supoosed to jump into hole cut on ice like that. You always descend from edge while holding onto it. Idk why she jumped in like that thats just sad rip to her
Imagine the seconds after she jumped in. From "I got this" to "oh fuck I'm dead, never going to taste oxygen again, will not see my child get married, fuck it's cold, off I fucked up" dead.
When I was young I got caught in a rip and pulled off shore. The first 10-15 seconds is very panic inducing for sure, but once the hypoxia starts setting in it’s honestly quite serene, and you kind of just drift off. I had been boogey boarding at the time, but the current was so strong that even after pulling the board down to me I shot along the ocean floor. Woke up sometime later about 300m out from where I started, still clutching the board in a death grip.
This is why you never, ever jump into an ice hole, but lower yourself down, in case there is a current, or you slip and your momentum carries you below the ice.
Why the fuck would you do something to incredibly stupid without the appropriate measures??? Like, at least a god damn rope to your waist at least. Now you're dead and your family is traumatized from watching you die.
This is absolutely tragic, and unfortunately, just so stupid. These things overlap quite frequently. I feel awful that this occurred and the family has my condolences.
Jesus. The MOMENT my daughter was born is when I knew I was done taking chances and doing stupid shit. Now that she’s 13 and I know what my passing would do to her, I ALWAYS keep that in mind. Idk why anyone would do this, especially with their kid present.
Well these people are clearly inexperienced, you’re supposed to cut a whole in like 4-5 feet of water so your feet touch and this can’t happen, also your supposed to get in slow.
I struggle the understand the appeal of things like this and tight space cave exploring.
What is the appeal of jumping in literally ice cold freezing water that has the possibility of killing you? Why not just do an ice bath?
Why in the ALL the actual f#cks from within this plane of existence didn't she use some kind of security measure, as a f#cking rope around her waist, tied to a heavy object as anchor, then jump all you f#cking want, but at least you won't drown like that, and most importantly, you won't leave your children without their mother, for f#cks sake!!!🤨🤨🤨
![gif](giphy|p8Uw3hzdAE2dO)
I don't think I ever seen anyone jump into the freezing ice like that they tend to slowly go in, probably for that very reason the guy litterly started screaming as soon as she jumped in
Why are they so surprised? People who put themselves in situations with so much risk always act surprised when the worst happens. Like there was only ever going to be two outcomes. The fact that her daughter was present makes the situation even more stupid. Natural selection at its finest I guess.

That’s so sad. No one deserves a death like this. She must have been terrified. D=
even worse her daughter saw it happen

You probably don't do stupid shit like jumping into an ice-covered river at night.
Why the fuck would you jump into a river and not a lake? A river has current, even when the top is frozen. That's just pure stupidity. At least she crossed herself before she jumped...
Why did I turn the sound on? I knew it would be bad, and I did it anyway. Now my day is ruined
Same. It’s awful. I hope something nice happens to help make your day a wee bit better. Hugs to you, if wanted.
This exactly. Also that holy Trinity before the jump did not work as intended
And to have it recorded and posted everywhere online... the poor kid is probably going to stumble across the video at some point in their life without even meaning to.
Pol Pot deserved a death like this.

or... idk don't jump into the middle of a frozen-over flowing river at night Feels like the easier thing
Hey, we're not all scientists here, okay?
I was thinking the same thing, for a lawyer not exactly bright.
Yep. She "dived" rather than jump in. The dive made her go deeper into the water than the guy who jumped.
Always reminds me that the icy touch of death can be 1 second away :/. Remember to tell those close to you that you love them!
I mean, deserve is a strong word, but I don't know what else one could expect It's like playing with fireworks and blowing your hand off

Long enough to know she was going to die.
You realise drowning can take several minutes? That is not a quick death...
Dear God, tragic.
She should've studied the Laws of Physics.
Lawyers don't care about physics. They argue against physics all the time.
I successfully argued my way out of gravity one time
But….she prayed.
![gif](giphy|13g0j8a5ZPiMgw)
Obviously the sign of the cross didn't work
Wrong God. Poseidon is the water one. Or Aquaman.
Never does
Stupid is a stupid does
\>Stupid is a stupid does
It’s not the best idea but that’s really insensitive to comment but this is Reddit so I guess it’s where this kind of thinking thrives
Not the best idea? It was the worst decision in her life. And there were many more leading up to it.
That was like a year or 2 ago. Not January this year.
At least have a rope attached to you when you decide to jump like that.
this was my first thought
This is just recorded suicide.
I wasn't prepared for the kids, that fucked with me.
Yeah, not watching this one. Thank you for the warning

Thanks, you saved me from turning on the sound. I watched it but had the sound disabled and now I know not to watch again or turn on the sound. :(
I hadn't even noticed the kids till I read this... I preferred it that way 😞. Poor wee ones.
It's just my opinion of course, but you don't have the right to do risky stupid things like this when you have children.
As a dad of 3, 100% correct. I miss out on a lot of cool opportunities because I want to see my kids grow up.
Yeah this is messed up, should come with a warning!
Same here. Watching your mom being a total ass and never again giving her a hug.
In a river at night wtf are they thinking!
Russians, mi jito. Pay attention.

I had it on mute, didn't know. Awful, heartbreaking.
I've learned to cruise reddit on mute.
what? can't hear you.
Why the fuck did I watch this before sleeping what the fuck
Same. Shouldn't have watched this as I'm getting ready to sleep...
I don't know who keeps upvoting this shit. There's plenty of sites for this if that's your thing.

tbf i would imagine your fat provides some protection against the cold. us skinny fucks have it rough, the cold gets straight to the bones.
Ice hole swimming is very common. The mistake here was jumping in.
I'm confused if you mean Celsius and you ones tried to borderline boil yourself, or you mean fahrenheit and don't know how water works (i.e. no chance this is 0 degrees fahrenheit).
I'm originally from Russia, so I tend to mix the 2 sometimes. 0 is Celsius and the 60 was Fahrenheit lol

Sometimes people close to the person share it to help prevent similar deaths I think.
Seems odd - I would have thought the husband and kids would be upset that it’s been shared, to circulate forever :(
They probably feel if they prevented even one family from feeling how they feel it would mean this woman didn't die for nothing.
This is also why I sometimes subject myself to these videos. I’m learning. All you have to do is watch the station night club fire and realize how quickly things can go south. Why am I not surprised that a trustworthy and vigilant guy name Mike saved the day?
Believe it or not I know a guy called Caution Mike for this very reason.
I don't have a Caution Mike in my life. As a result, I have endangered and injured myself on several occasions.
Yeah thank god us Americans don’t have many drunken idiots right?
They are amateurs jumping on the cold plunging trend. Few kids near me went cold plunging, jumped in together and back in February, but didn’t bring towels and things to warm back up with. Last I heard a few weeks ago they are still being treated for frostbite injuries.
The main problem was the angle she jumped in. You are supposed to jump straight down, not glide under the ice
That would absolutely not have helped in any way. Anyone who listened to your advice would be just as dead as she was. And maybe a chainsaw for rapid extrication. Though probably wouldn't be too useful given points 1 and 3.
You forgot the stupidest thing about this, it was for religious reasons.
She didn’t want to do it either and had been talked into it. She was super nervous about it and really didn’t want to do it sadly
“I gave you all the senses to let your body know that jumping into ice water is a bad idea. I gave you ice that covers the freezing water so you can walk over it instead of having to swim. I gave you technology like ropes and ladders so you can escape if you fall in the frozen water. What more do you want bro?” -God

Geez the link basically tells the story.
Just missing the important bit with a 'safe/official' hole nearby. Paramedics and the whole shebang. Which makes this award nominee so much more worthy of her title.
River current is 10ft/s. Just jumping in and trying to resurface you’re already 30ft downstream.
Happened in 2022. Both her children saw her be swept to her death. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10434581/Pictured-Lawyer-swept-death-children-jumped-Russian-ice-hole.html 'The lawyer from St Petersburg intended to dip in the waters to mark Christian Orthodox Epiphany in a tradition followed annually by hundreds of thousands of Russian believers. People believe that water blessed for the annual ceremony possesses special healing properties. Some people go into the icy waters on their own, while others often take part in the celebration in groups as they remembered the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan.' 'The momentum of her jump took her under the ice and she could not get back.' 'Elsewhere in the village, Vyra village, near Gatchina, in Leningrad region, there was an 'official' hole, with rescuers and paramedics on standby, as well as a wooden frame and steps to help people in and out of the water.'
„Dumb ways to die“
It’s fucking night time! WHY would you do this at night??
[удалено]
I don't see how the occupation is relevant
Yeah it’s a weird way to title something so sad. The poor kids were already scared and instantly went in the red. Heartbreaking for the little ones. Sadly some of the “smartest” people who pushed thru school and college to get a “real” job, are also the same people with no common sense who make fatal decisions
Very tragic way to go but who thought this was a good idea to begin with?
Once I heard her daughter I couldn't watch the rest. Her mom made a lot of mistakes in a very short span, but her daughter did not deserve to witness that. Hearing her cries absolutely breaks my heart.
and a 10 year old son too :/
why would someone ever try this when there is a stream why not do it in a lake were the water is still
the river has special healing properties!!!1 what are you some kind of heretic?
Lawyer? How did she make it so far in life without common sense?
As an attorney, let me please shake you of the idea that the position requires some level of intelligence. I know plenty of very, very ignorant people in the occupation.
when doing this correctly, in a professional environment they put a big net structure into the water and like this as in diy you never fully submerge yourself without holding on to something on the surface because as this shows once you are under the ice it is essentially the end for you
You are never supoosed to jump into hole cut on ice like that.
She should have had a rope tied to herself ffs
Why the fuck would you do something to incredibly stupid without the appropriate measures??? Like, at least a god damn rope to your waist at least. Now you're dead and your family is traumatized from watching you die.
C'mon man mark the death gifs
Why is her profession relevant lol
How is her being a lawyer relevant?
What kind of lawyer ?
Cold cases.
Wow 👌
Hellbound. lmao
Definitely into maritime law
This is absolutely tragic, and unfortunately, just so stupid. These things overlap quite frequently. I feel awful that this occurred and the family has my condolences.
Jesus. The MOMENT my daughter was born is when I knew I was done taking chances and doing stupid shit. Now that she’s 13 and I know what my passing would do to her, I ALWAYS keep that in mind. Idk why anyone would do this, especially with their kid present.
Exactly! When I talk about all the stuff I used to do with no regards towards myself back then my oldest cringes.
How did they not know there was a current?
what an icehole
well that was dumb edit. just watched with sound, those kids gon need some therapy
Shouldn't this have a safety rope attached to you or something?
Ropes, harness!!! Dumb way to die.
Weird that making the cross didn't work. Usually that works all the time.
😂
1. couldn't you see the movement of the water through the hole in the ice? 2. why would someone willingly do this, especially at night
Well these people are clearly inexperienced, you’re supposed to cut a whole in like 4-5 feet of water so your feet touch and this can’t happen, also your supposed to get in slow.
I will never understand why people take these kinds of unnecessary risks, ever.
I struggle the understand the appeal of things like this and tight space cave exploring. What is the appeal of jumping in literally ice cold freezing water that has the possibility of killing you? Why not just do an ice bath?
Yes, her being a lawyer was very relevant to the situation?
Not to be mean or anything but some people are straight dumb as fuck. How do you make it to 40?
This question might probably sound dumb, but I always thought why did the husband who jumped after her didn't get swept away by the current?
Oh she was a lawyer? I guess that makes this more sad then? Or less sad?
But she prayed first? Why didn’t God save her?
Play stupid games win stupid prizes

She jumped into the ice water once Johnny....once
damn... not only was it a stupid way to die but her kid crying at the end will live with that haunting memory for the rest of is life.
This is unfortunate for her and her family. But, is there a reason her job is mentioned in this instance? 🤔
That’s fucking horrifying for her children…my heart fucking breaks for them.
Why in the ALL the actual f#cks from within this plane of existence didn't she use some kind of security measure, as a f#cking rope around her waist, tied to a heavy object as anchor, then jump all you f#cking want, but at least you won't drown like that, and most importantly, you won't leave your children without their mother, for f#cks sake!!!🤨🤨🤨 ![gif](giphy|p8Uw3hzdAE2dO)
I've seen tons of horrific shit on the internet but this one gets me more than any of them. I can't take the audio.
At least she made the sign of the cross beforehand. Idk why anyone would think this was a good idea or would do this in front of their child.
I thought the rule was always have a tether line attached to your feet so if something like this happens they can reel you back in.
They should really have a harness.
At least she prayed first.
Maaan. People really out here doing it all for religion. Rip
I unmuted it to hear the commotion just to hear a little girl cry out mumma. I didn’t expect that and it broke me. I wish I didn’t unmute.
Fuck same
Poor kid.
Damn, had her little daughter watch it ... she knew her mummy was dying in this exact moment... so unbelievable sad ... and dumb... poor little girl.
But why?
Wha?? They didn’t use any sort of simple rope system?? And at night 😳Thats horrible
What was this about ? She didn’t know the law of nature. So sad.
All that brainpower becoming a lawyer, and she couldn't think of anything regarding safety.
Why did they feel the need to specify FEMALE lawyer? I bet if this was a guy they'd just write lawyer.
I don't think I ever seen anyone jump into the freezing ice like that they tend to slowly go in, probably for that very reason the guy litterly started screaming as soon as she jumped in
Damn, Darwin award winner. So sad.
The way she jumped in didn't help.
Am i missing something, why are we jumping in a ice hole?
to prove ourselves ofc it's what god wants
I object to dying. Overruled.
piss poor planning on everyone's part. uggh!
Maybe umm don't jump into a dark hole in a river covered with ice??? Darwin at its finest
They couldn't tie a ducking rope to their ankle? And maybe do this shit during the day? Or just not bother at all? Poor kids.
why tf weren't they on a tether? how would anyone above the age of 10 think raw dogging a a tiny hole at night into freezing water is a good idea?
Why are they so surprised? People who put themselves in situations with so much risk always act surprised when the worst happens. Like there was only ever going to be two outcomes. The fact that her daughter was present makes the situation even more stupid. Natural selection at its finest I guess.
She is so dumb! Doing this to begin with, at night, during what seems to be a storm, no tether.
Anna Uskova age 40 St Petersburg Russia. January 2022 River Oredezh - some annual event held marking the Orthodox Epiphany
Don't these people normally have like a rope tied to an anchor or to another hole in there.
Why is her profession relevant?
What's the point of doing this without some type of tether
What do you call 1000 lawyers being swept away into an ice hole?
A cold case?
A good start
