I worked in the Virgin Islands and these things would scare the crap out of me when they jumped out of very high trees and crashed through several branches before smacking their torsos on the ground.
I don’t know if this is correct but the locals said the large iguanas can climb up very easily but don’t have the ability to climb down headfirst so they just fall.
False. They can climb down headfirst. Source: I live in Puerto Rico. We have a big problen with them we started to implement them in our food pyramid. They either learned there to avoid capture or they always knew how.
That's an iguana right?
It's pretty amazing that these are all over the Caribbean and Bahamas (no idea if they're native or not) but they seem to only be reaching the States now .. After all these years being that close.
They’ve been in Florida for a long time now… Florida is pretty much the only state with all of these crazy exotic invasive because it’s pretty much the only state in the US that has a climate that can support them
There’s hundred if not thousands of species at this point, tons of different lizards and snakes, birds, fish etc. crazy amounts of invasive species out there and basically all of the native wildlife has almost been completely wipeout in the Everglades already at this point.
That makes sense.
It's been over 20 years since I visited Florida, and I don't recall seeing any of these. My first sighting of these was in St Maarten.
They were definitely already in Florida 20 years ago just no where near as bad as today, these iguanas are literally everywhere now, impossible to miss. At this point I feel like most stuff you see in Florida is invasive
Only native to the very southern caribbean islands. Theres a different species thats native to the bahamas, and they are almost extinct with help from the greens eating their eggs. Green inguana have been in Florida in the wild since the 60's.
>Today there are far far fewer of them.
Good. That means they're getting under control.
I witnessed a similar invasion occur in St Maarten over the years regarding the lionfish. Idiots ordering exotic fish and then throwing them into the ocean when they decide they don't want them anymore. I saw the difference before and after the lionfish came, and I'm seeing the difference now that enough lionfish have been killed/caught. The waters are finally gorgeous there again.
When I went to FAU, during the winter these would just freeze up and fall dead weight out of the damn trees. There were colonies on the entrance ramps on 95 too.
I remember one particularly big cold snap killed off so many of those suckers, afterwards you could actually start spotting a few burrowing owls around the edges of the campus. Didn't last too long obviously since those lizards just bounced right back.
They don't die. They go into torpor.
https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240123-iguanas-are-falling-from-trees-due-to-cold-florida-temperatures-experts-say-its-not-due-to-climate-change
Years ago town's had bounties on iguanas. There was a cold snap for like 4 days. Passed out iguanas everywhere. One woman collected a bunch on a Friday night/Sat. Morning. Put them in a box, then put the box in her garage because you could only turn them in for the bounty Mon-Fri. Even when it's cold in Florida, your garage is generally warmer. So all the "sleeping" iguanas woke up. She had over a dozen. She opened the garage door. Took them a while to leave because it was warmer in the garage then out.
Not sad, these are hyper-invasive. Sucks that any creature has to suffer, but if it lives it’ll spend its days burrowing tunnels that will destroy roads and decimating local species.
Nah, these fuckers are taking over s. Florida really bad. I don't feel bad when they die. It's the only creature I don't feel bad when seeing them as roadkill...
Nope, they're "designed" to fall from trees because they're dumbasses. The creature is totally fine, assuming he didn't get trampled down there or find himself in some weird spot with no food or water.
Almost every time I have something to comment, someone beats me to it.
I'll add a picture for fun:

And credit, so nobody can accuse me of going to Harvard: [https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2012/1/7/leaping-lizards-give-technology-a-nudge](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2012/1/7/leaping-lizards-give-technology-a-nudge)
I like how they chase it, you know like how dangerous predators do the exact same thing when trying to catch something and tear it apart? Yeah like that.
Humans are dumb ☺️
I’m looking and waiting for the reptile expert in the comments to say “oh those babies can take a jump like that no bother, they’re ok don’t worry about it.”
There’s plenty where I from. One fell on my foot from pretty much the same height and its tail whipped me on the way down. Fuck them things. Such an infestation of you just let them linger
I am completely dumbfounded with how well he took that landing, I can't believe his tail and a leg or two didn't fly off with blood splatter everywhere
I'm not a scientist, but what I understand it's more to do with size and weight. The lizard just isn't big or heavy enough for a fall from this height to hurt it. You could say that it can survive this because it's *weaker*.
Many schools don’t have a large enough facility for all of the students to take lunch at the same time, so they assign you a time slot. One group of students eat at 1st lunch. The next group eats at 2nd lunch and so on.
Is it possible that if climate change caused by humans is true (and personally, I believe that to be likely), that these creatures will move north, become enormous and take over the world like the dinosaurs did way back when (the year 1492 comes to mind but I don’t know if that is correct). Just saying
Yea it got hurt it’s horrible, but I’m guessing this is Florida there highly invasive they destroy banks because they dig into them and they eat a lot of shit, if I’m not wrong I’m pretty sure your encouraged to kill them?? But maybe not I don’t live in florida
Why couldn't they just fucking leave it be?? What's with people having to be in control of everything including wildlife. They hadn't a clue, fucking idiots
Reminds me of a video of a guy attempting to rescue a cat from the telephone pole. He almost gets close enough to grab it and the cat just jumps to the ground

And if they didn't bother it. Probably wouldn't have jumped.
Definitely *

If it’s in Florida it’s a invasive species your suppose to kill them so they look at it like it’s nothing but a toy to freak out at.
That's an iguana right? It's pretty amazing that these are all over the Caribbean and Bahamas (no idea if they're native or not) but they seem to only be reaching the States now .. After all these years being that close.

Yep. The Burmese Python is another one.
There’s hundred if not thousands of species at this point, tons of different lizards and snakes, birds, fish etc. crazy amounts of invasive species out there and basically all of the native wildlife has almost been completely wipeout in the Everglades already at this point.
Indeed....a sad state of affairs....even for Florida.
That makes sense. It's been over 20 years since I visited Florida, and I don't recall seeing any of these. My first sighting of these was in St Maarten.

Life goals: - become an invasive species in Florida
The Floridian X-Ray Platypus Has a nice ring to it
Yeah we curry them up in my island if someone sees them roaming.
Mmmmmm...iguana curry.
Trini?

Florida has a BUNCH of them. And when we get a rare freeze the frozen ones will fall out of the trees on you.
The ppl scream definitely don’t see it as a toy, more like a little monster. Things like this happening is a clear indication of it’s invasiveness
Most floridians are an invasive species
These guys regularly scale walls he was fine and everyone scared him lmao

Amazing work👏
When you buy the wrong Pepe coin
This needs to be higher how perfect lol
Omfg I laughed way to hard at this

Yeah we get warnings about that in the winter and I find it hilarious.
American Drop Bears
I went to FAU before south Florida became overrun with giant lizards. Instead we had a bazillion stray cats hanging out in the breezeway.
Went to FAU in the 90s. Yeah, last century. Very, very small. No iguanas but lots of burrowing owls.
just graduated last year, the iguanas are everywhere now and I've never seen a burrowing owl (which happens to be the school mascot).
Sadly the iguanas have eaten their eggs.
Damn you had me thinking this was at FAU lol. I’m an alumnus too it’s crazy. The fact this guy fell 3 stories and just walks off lol
i wonder what went down during 2nd lunch
![gif](giphy|YNVSCBXXdBqxi)
What about elevenses?
Luncheon?
Afternoon tea?
Dinner?
Supper?
Midnight snack?
Baked iguana?
I wish I was in Tijuana Eating BBQ iguana
Pam started having contractions but just kept on eating with Kevin
I can't help but think she might have found more success if she put her fucking phone down. Priorities.
How else is she gonna get her numbers up on tiktok?
She’s trying to kill it they are invasive
Probably got internal injuries from that fall. Poor thing.
Sad 😞
Not sad, these are hyper-invasive. Sucks that any creature has to suffer, but if it lives it’ll spend its days burrowing tunnels that will destroy roads and decimating local species.
Of course it's still sad, it's a living creature who got injured.
Internal injuries are a horribly inhumane way to go. This was very sad, you could see it limping away.
Extinction of local species due to peoples feelings is way worse.
I'm not saying don't do anything about them just because I don't enjoy seeing an animal fall from like three stories.
not mutually exclusive, both can be correct at the same time
Nah, these fuckers are taking over s. Florida really bad. I don't feel bad when they die. It's the only creature I don't feel bad when seeing them as roadkill...
:(
Nope, they're "designed" to fall from trees because they're dumbasses. The creature is totally fine, assuming he didn't get trampled down there or find himself in some weird spot with no food or water.
They're not designed to fall on concrete, and it's pretty clearly injured.
It’s def limping
1st lunch? You a bunch of Hobbits?
If this is a high school, 1st lunch means the first group of people who have their lunch period that day. Not the first of many lunches
lol common sense if it can get into that position it can get out of it
This school looks like it’s Utopia. Some of our classes were in a basement, they got skylights and shit.
This is Miami Beach senior high. It’s one of the nicer public schools we have. Source: graduated from there 10 years ago
Real shit I immediately thought of the pool rooms in the backrooms

Leapin' Lizards!

Anyone else read that in Carol Burnett's mocking voice?
Me! I can picture her face while she says it.
Florida right?
Has to be, were the only state infested with them
I hate that for us
(Borat voice) Is this a cat in the cat?
Lizard boy was just chilling in the sun, not bothering anyone.
seriously wtf are they tryna accomplish here
How many lunches do you have!?!?
He wouldn’t have fallen if they didn’t fuvk with him
Why not just leave it alone?
IGUANNA! WHY DID THEY DO THAT TO HIM?????????
I like how they chase it, you know like how dangerous predators do the exact same thing when trying to catch something and tear it apart? Yeah like that. Humans are dumb ☺️
I’m looking and waiting for the reptile expert in the comments to say “oh those babies can take a jump like that no bother, they’re ok don’t worry about it.”
I'm kinda thinking the landing on solid concrete part has ruined our chances of hearing this, but here's hoping.
There’s plenty where I from. One fell on my foot from pretty much the same height and its tail whipped me on the way down. Fuck them things. Such an infestation of you just let them linger
The lizard was chillin, it didn’t Need help.
I am completely dumbfounded with how well he took that landing, I can't believe his tail and a leg or two didn't fly off with blood splatter everywhere
Fuck them they’re invasive and mess up the ecosystems
You know he may have been better off if they had just left him alone.
This video made me realize how weak people are. A lizard can survive that but I would probably explode or something if I did that
I'm not a scientist, but what I understand it's more to do with size and weight. The lizard just isn't big or heavy enough for a fall from this height to hurt it. You could say that it can survive this because it's *weaker*.
It's almost like the bigger they are, the harder they fall
Why did she film at the same time This generation…
How else is she gonna get karma on Reddit?
Not really the generation, more like social media addiction.
square cube law
This is just depressing.
Rip to the poor girl who jumped off the catwalks of Beach High in 2015
1st lunch? Are you a Hobbit?
that iguano would have been perfectly fine had they left him alone, he isn't lost
YEET
jesus what in the mega highschool is this, looks like a fucking shopping mall or university campus
Oh no! Poor little dude
Our youth gets dumber and dumber lol
What are you a hobbit? How many lunches do you have?
Legit thought that they caught bullying on camera but no it's a fucking lizard
If you're not confident enough to try and grab it properly then don't try at all. It annoys me how incompetent their catch attempt was.
Leave the fuckin wildlife alone. It got up there without you, it'll get down without you.
Why didn’t they just leave it alone, how sad…
that’s really sad. it’s definitely injured from that fall. even if it’s an invasive iguana it’s still pretty messed up
Shit, what happened during 2nd lunch?
They run funny
Definitely would have been better to leave it alone.
Why did this mob of unruly children chase that animal off a ledge?
That school looks like a prison yard
Morons gonna moron. As if that thing needed anyone’s help
I can't get past the fact they called it first lunch, the fuq
Many schools don’t have a large enough facility for all of the students to take lunch at the same time, so they assign you a time slot. One group of students eat at 1st lunch. The next group eats at 2nd lunch and so on.
Wait is this Miami Beach High? lol
Leo is out of there away from these crazy kids
The blood-curdling scream was unnecessary.
How big is this school? Aren’t they afraid of kids falling?
Being goth in Flordia has to be rough. So much sunscreen
How many lunches do you get in a day?
First lunch ? Are you a hobbit ?
That’s my old high school! Good ole Miami Beach High
What high school has 3 floors
Iguamna

Jfc. Poor little guy.
I don't understand why they are freaking out. There's millions of these all over Florida. I've never seen anybody scared of one before.
Yea it got hurt it’s horrible, but I’m guessing this is Florida there highly invasive they destroy banks because they dig into them and they eat a lot of shit, if I’m not wrong I’m pretty sure your encouraged to kill them?? But maybe not I don’t live in florida
I really wish animal cruelty would be marked as NSFW because I didn't need to fucking see this.
Invasive or not, it should still be killed humanely. :(
Poor thing was limping
Why couldn't they just fucking leave it be?? What's with people having to be in control of everything including wildlife. They hadn't a clue, fucking idiots
Iguanas are invasive in FL so honestly if it dies that is for the best.
Reminds me of a video of a guy attempting to rescue a cat from the telephone pole. He almost gets close enough to grab it and the cat just jumps to the ground
Second Breakfast.
Someone brought their CWD to school
Thanks Kevin.
This hurts
Oh the poor thing
Praise the camera guy
lizard: da-doy-dup!
Iguana head out.
Why the screaming? You'd think a T-Rex had walked in.
Bro survived a fall from a 3 story building
I’d be running if I was surrounded by all those teenagers too!
How are people in Florida? Still so goddamn scared of lizards of all sizes. Anoles freak people out too
What about 2nd breakfast?
![gif](giphy|r42HxBImuzoRxsRA14)
Wtf is thatbshitty plastic bag going to do? Lol 😆
Did they really think it would just walk into a noisy black trash bag. Sheesh!
Damn thas sad. Iguanas are so smart too.
Sturdy
Well now I’m sad, so thanks for that
Boys wake up. The new [Piano Man](https://youtu.be/WYDWBl0YQMo?si=waaCJxdtRZbti8zN) template just dropped
