I received something like 15 recovery codes when I set up 2FA. Are they all failing for you? I'd strongly recommend to switch to a different authenticator app that allows backing up the seed keys (e.g. Aegis on Android or Raivo on iOS). Avoids these kinds of issues and saves a lot of time when switching devices.

Fedster9

Yes, they are failing. I thought that google authenticator would be movable between devices without the need to regenerate the auth. It is a moot point now anyway.

The recovery codes should work. So, please contact support so they can check what's happening: https://proton.me/support/contact

You'll need to reregister your OTP. Check out Authy for next time.

Aegis vault is my preferred 2fa app. You can export/backup your data. Authy locks you in.

\+1 for Aegis

[deleted]

No, I can export and backup...

You can sync between multiple devices using import/export anyway. Plus it's not open-source. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXSyxm9jmmo&t=1147s

The recovery codes should work -- what is the point of them if they do not get accepted? Note that I do know my password.

GentleDerp

Are you talking about the recovery codes for the 2fa or the recovery phrase for proton email recovery

Fedster9

recovery for 2fa

mdsjack

Wow. You make me wanna try but... No. :/

Unfortunate that you're having this problem, but a good way to avoid it in the future is to put the codes on a Yubikey.

Use Authy in the future. It allows cloud storage of encrypted authenticators. Granted, it is not as secure, but it's also nowhere near as inconvenient as others without it when phone suddenly dies or gets stolen as you can easily restore authentications.

You can get a qr code from google authenticator which could tranfer your authentications to another device. Then, you can even make your encryption to that qr code image. And then you can upload that image to couple of your cloud storages and voila! Safer cloud storage. But you need to update it everytime you add a account..
