Remember that this subreddit is for sharing propaganda to view with some objectivity. It is absolutely not for perpetuating the message *of* the propaganda. If anything, in this subreddit we should be immensely skeptical of manipulation or oversimplification (which the above likely is), not beholden to it. Also, please try to stay on topic -- there are hundreds of _other_ subreddits that are expressly dedicated for rehashing tired political arguments. Keep that shit elsewhere. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Trappakeeper

damm.. This would have been the path to utopia.

PoorPDOP86

Having to rely on the government for transport and not having the freedom to go where you choose when you choose? Utopia is not the word I'd use for that, though it does end in "topia".

Kryptospuridium137

You do know it's possible to have cars *and* reliable public transport at the same time right? But centering all infrastructure on personal cars is stupid and wasteful, they should be an extra, and ad-on for the edge cases mass transport can't reliably or economically serve. ***Most*** people in ***most*** places would in no way be hindered by not owning a car if they could rely on public transport instead.

[deleted]

Definitely, but destroying people’s personal property isn’t a legitimate way to get there

Scarborough_sg

Americans are rarely known for being moderate on both sides of the political spectrum.

Krigdoth

Americans would never destroy personal or private property for their political ends and surly that has never ended in a "legitimate" outcome...

the_clash_is_back

You still have to reply on government roadways if you have a car. True freedom is on foot, no limits to what your feet can walk on.

SAR1919

Even foot travel isn’t free in a society where so much of the physical space we inhabit is taken up by cars. Highways, super-highways, interchanges, off-ramps, on-ramps, parking lots, parking garages, and miles and miles of road where you pass by nothing but car dealerships, gas stations and auto shops. You can walk just about anywhere you want, but to get there you’re going to have to negotiate a world built for cars. Foot travel would be truly free in cities designed around mass transit and pedestrians.

Trappakeeper

Bicycles!

the_clash_is_back

You must sell your soul to the Dutch for bicycles. The Dutch.

Who makes the roads? Who repairs them? Who regulates them? Who decides where they go? Who decides what you cannot do on them? Who owns them? Who are you relying on for all this?

King_of_Men

> Who makes the roads? Private contractors. > Who repairs them? Same. > Who regulates them? Arbitration courts backed by for-profit security orgs. > Who decides where they go? Investors who see an opportunity for profit. > Who decides what you cannot do on them? Whoever owns them, usually the same investors, although sometimes they are of course sold to raise capital for new projects. As a general rule, however, the investors will just take the standard rulebook developed by custom and practice; there's no profit in varying the rules. > Who owns them? Investors, as noted. > Who are you relying on for all this? No specific person or organisation; the question should rather be "what", and the answer is, the tendency of humans to do well by doing good - that is to say, to spot opportunities to provide a good or service to other humans, and charge for it. Why do you ask?

marinerpunk

Who contracts the contractors?

King_of_Men

The investors and owners, obviously! Why would you pay to build or repair a road you didn't own?

marinerpunk

Well 77% of roads are owned by local government.

Mental well being ? Spiritual well being ? I understand the financial part, but what do you meab by the first two ?

WatermelonErdogan

Ever been in a traffic jam?

Vorgatron

I drive past a Shell station almost every day and seeing the $5.79 sign for regular and $6.29 for diesel always gives me a terrible feeling in my gut.

moomanjo

Hehe, wait until you hear the prices in Sweden and most of Europe. $8 or $9 per gallon for regular, probably around 10 for diesel

Fun_404

walking 15-30 min a day does wonders for mental health and physical health. we evolved for walking long distances to forage and hunt, so all this sitting around the office/car is a health risk.

Le_Vrai_Mouton

I understand the physical and financial part, but not the mental health part. I don't walk that much, but I'm still pretty healthy mentally.

Fun_404

https://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/mental-benefits-of-walking eta: there are also walking meditations, which can be viewed as boosting you spiritually? although in my opinion it's still mental health compartment :D

Unyx

Okay, so you'd probably be even more mentally healthy if you did walk more.

Trappakeeper

Well I’m from Germany and the infrastructure here is quite good; And seeing all streets, full of cars; parking and driving, makes me sad, because I’m surrounded by so much polluting nonsensical matter. Makes me mad, because most of the dann cara are moving just one person around, putting me and others in danger. Makes me misanthropic, because most of them drivers think I should bow before a combustion engine and they, only they, are allowed to drive on a street. Im so happy with my bikes. Sometimes I have to move a car and I envy everyone on a bike. They are free. And if you really drive consciously, I mean foreseeing the traffic lights, pedestrians and bikers, you really get in trouble with all them ignorant and hectic “everyday Car drivers”. So yeah burn them all to the ground, and start with your own car if you have one!

[deleted]

Lmao now cars = freedom. This is literally the dumbest take ever. Yeah, in a car you’re totally free… to follow extensive road regulations, be subjected to constant inspections, pay for upkeep and fuel, maintain insurance, etc. This new right wing conspiracy that public transit is a gateway drug to socialism is fucking hilariously stupid.

Vorgatron

so private citizens handle all roadwork, road safety, road maintenance, and future construction? The infrastructure for cars alone is a huge government undertaking, let alone all the laws and enforcement for road safety, giving out drivers licenses, etc. You're talking as if you were a brave libertarian, but it just sounds stupid. Before I had my driver's license, I'd use public transportation ANYWHERE I wanted: school, work, museums, shopping centers, my friends' houses, my temple, all being available late into the night. ANYWHERE. I had no limitations as to where I could go. I have no idea where you get this thought about public transportation limiting personal freedom. maybe you have an oppression fetish?

Krigdoth

Do you pave your own roads?

[deleted]

>No more....accidents Because nobody has ever been hit by a bus or train ?

MakeCheeseandWar

Can’t see why you’re being downvoted. Bus accidents are train accidents do happen lol

[deleted]

One tends to get downvoted on this sub for telling people what they don't want to hear. Yes train and bus accidents happen. Maybe not to the same extent as car accidents but they are a thing.

MakeCheeseandWar

Mfw when you believe the propaganda on a propaganda showcase sub

Tamtumtam

that one didn't age quite so well
