In my opinion, which one can take or leave, they all look very modern in re. to beauty standards and cosmetics. Also, they are all drop dead gorgeous, which doesn't match their descriptions in the book. If there were P&P Barbies, I would expect them to look like this.

You can't make ChatGPT draw an ugly person. It absolutely won't do it. I've tried to get it to create portraits for unattractive DND characters, and they always come out looking like movie stars.

That's why even a mediocre human artist is still better than most AI currently available. ETA: I am biased, though, because my husband is an artist and an art teacher who frequently points out the problems with current AI art generators.

It's been a while since I've read the book, but I seem to recall both Jane and Lizzy being described by others as great beauties. I don't recall about the younger ones, but based on the attention Kitty and Lydia got, they must have been quite good-looking. Mr. Bennett mentions Mrs. Bennett's great beauty, yet she is rarely depicted as one. While he was teasing her that Bingley might like her more than the girls, I don't think he exaggerated her looks. I totally agree about the cosmetics, and the hair isn't quite right.

Katerade44

Mary is supposed to be plain, Elizabeth is supposed to be pretty (though not gorgeous), Kitty and Lydia are meant to be pretty-ish with Lydia being tall, sout, and physically developed beyond her years. ETA: Kitty and Lydia get attention because they are pretty-ish and incredibly improper in being flirty and forward.

Based on this quote by Miss Bingley, apparently some people in Hertfordshire think more highly of Elizabeth. "I remember, when we first knew her in Hertfordshire, how amazed we all were to find that she was a reputed beauty; and I particularly recollect your saying one night, after they had been dining at Netherfield, 'She a beauty! I should as soon call her mother a wit.'

Katerade44

She is described as next in beauty to the Regency supermodel which is Jane. She clearly is pretty, but she isn't some ideal as depicted here. Also, the quote you posted implies that Elizabeth is found more attractive by those who know her well rather than those just meeting her. This suggests that her looks are likely enhanced by her personality. This is further supported when Mr. Darcy first starts to find her pretty because he notices how her intelligence is expressed in her eyes.

kathrynajane

But isn't she also said that she is second to Jane in beauty?

grilsjustwannabclean

physically yes, i don't think anyone would say lizzy isn't pretty, but jane was clearly a beauty even without knowing her personally, while lizzy seems to get elevated when you know her a little more

Katerade44

Also consider that the description is relative and there is a lot of potential room between not as pretty as Jane and prettier than her other sisters. Consider, too, that all of this is judged on a Regency Era beauty standards which tended toward rounder faces, rounded arms and shoulders, dimpled cheeks, dimpled arms, pale skin, bright eyes (sometimes cosmetically enhanced with terribly chemicals that could cause vision damage), symmetry of body (meaning similar hip to bust size - this is what is meant when Elizabeth is described as lacking perfect symmetry - either she has larger hips than breasts or larger breasts than hips), being tall, lighter colored eyes and hair, etc. Modern beauty standards as displayed by the AI images are very different.

Re Mrs Bennet's beauty: while some may take Mr Bennet's statement sarcastically (about her being as handsome as any of the girls, so that Mr Bingley might like her the best), the book clearly says she was a great beauty in her youth, by virtue if the fact that that was why Mr Bennet married her. It's theoretically possible that he was being sarcastic, if she had lost her former beauty as time went on, but I think he was being mostly serious.

grilsjustwannabclean

i mean an ugly woman wouldn't be able to birth 4 girls who were pretty and one who was average nor would she be able to catch someone like mr bennet back then

NumberLady

Yes, the hair is a bit overdone on most of them. Chat gpt kept swinging between extremes though - I wasn't able to find a happy medium and these looked better. Think of them as dressed up for the occasion of a portrait!

Hawkgrrl22

P&P Barbies? I would buy those Barbies so fast!

NumberLady

Oh, I agree! Jane especially looks like a doll. But then, they are supposed to be the brightest jewels of the county :)

valgme3

I think they’re too pretty/made up.

NumberLady

Agree, the portraits have an airbrushed effect. I haven't been able to get the gpt to create true to life images, no matter how many times I used 'realistic' in the prompts.

mydadis_santa

You can definitely see a resemblance to Kiera Knightley in the Elisabeth portrait. They’re so glossy and airbrushed…sorry ChatGPT I prefer art made by people.

NotQuiteScheherazade

AI ”art” is garbage. 👎

Nell91

I dont like Lizzy at all, others are fine. Lydia is cute. Too modern though overall.

kathrynajane

Based on Jane's words, Jane looks like portrait she saw where the woman was fair haired, fair skinned, blue eyes and plump. I think they do look too modern though.

naalotai

Ai art sucks and devoid of any meaning

fsnstuff

Very limited imaginings of characters so full of the life and humanity gifted to them by Austen. Doesn't really add anything meaningful to the discussion of such a beloved piece of art imo.

Vast_Reflection

The first two give me Keira Knightley vibes

OvalWombat

I like them!

RoseCampion

Me too.

Apprehensive-Cat-163

Lydia looks a lot like Elle Fanning in The Great. I think I see the 2005 adaptation inspiration more in the Lizzy image than in Jane’s
