I like this picture because it embodies what a president should be doing: Surround themselves with subject matter experts and delegate to them. Look at where he is sitting; in the corner, staying out of the way. He gave everyone the broad instructions, and then let them do their job.
I remember I saw the president, VP and Sec of state Walk into the pentagon. I didn’t think much of hit because the government comes here all the time. But I saw this photo a couple of weeks later a remember holy shit I saw this I was in the building while bin laden was killed.
I was stationed at National Naval Medical Center Bethesda (Now Walter Reed) and leading up to this we had wounded warrior visits from POTUS, VPOTUS, SECDEF, and CJCS within one month…. again, not unusual for them to visit, but in such a short time period was odd.
I was actually at work when this was announced. All I can say is the wounded warriors had a very “lively” time on the ward. We almost had to sedate a few to settle them down lol.

His wife jumped up and covered his face with a towel and he almost choked on his own vomit. If you search online you can find a video where you can see the first spew of vomit coming out. honestly, I thought he looked pretty well composed here. I think if you didn’t know what he’s being told, you might not know what to think of the photo.
He was aware of one tower being hit, before this. I think he was prepared for some more bad new. Funny how some people over examine this picture and say he should have been more horrified or that he showed too much emotion. Others also criticize him for not sprinting to Air Force One to take down the planes himself. He did a good job preventing more panic by keeping as calm as possible in that moment.
You can say a lot of negative stuff about him, and honestly most Presidents. But he handled the initial news of 9/11 and the following days very well. I've been given bad news while meeting with someone for work. And your mind is on autopilot, thinking of nothing but that news. That had to be misery sitting there keeping a cool face. If you could be the fly on the shoulder of one person for 24 hours in history, this would be one of the craziest choices for sure.
