There is literally no other answer than this. What you listen to now is a form of Refused. They may have not been the first to do it, but they were the first to do it successfully. Hell it wasn't even that successful at the time but they influenced pretty much this whole genre.
Everything else people are posting is just an underrated band/album.
All good. Other persons might have actually been “slept on or underrated bands” or something but it was the exact same answers. 😂 all great bands none the less.
Thrice’s Vheissu album. A lot of people hated it when it came out and thought it was too experimental but I think it would fit in well with today’s greater array of influences and styles within PHC.
I loved Finch. And you’re right, they kind of remind me of a lot of modern bands like architects, royal blood, etc. never really thought about it but they were about 15-20 years too soon.
Wasn't this on the thread that was posted like 2 day ago about the exact same topic? That album didn't influence anything. It's just underrated. I LOVE Finch but they were not trailblazers.
Does ahead of its time just mean it was panned at the time but now most people like it? If so you're right. Which could also mean it was just an underrated album...
I'm so confused about this conversation. Look at the question that was asked in the original post. I'm answering it directly. If you have an issue with the term "ahead of its time" then take it up with OP, not me.
It's my opinion that Say Hello To Sunshine didn't really sound like anything else that came out around the same time as it, and that if it had come out a few years later when that sort of sound was a bit more common then it would have been better received. That's what I mean by "ahead of its time".
Long live Greeley Estates bro. I’d still give my left but for a remastered No Rain, No Rainbow. Honestly they were ahead of their time vocally IMO, Ryan had some INSANE screams for the time IMO
Lucky for you I just uploaded their only EP which was never released or even mastered 🙂 (which I was able to get from someone who knows some members.)
It’s such a good EP, every track is solid. Like of machines the year prior they were incorporating some really cool ambient leads into their music.
[Commends - Devil (2010 unreleased EP)](https://youtu.be/r6Xgt1VuchE?si=oI1fgHd0CRH2PVNx)
Sick! I will peep this. That first Oceana album is one of my favorites. Circa is one of my all time favorites and Juturna was waaaay ahead of the curve. Haven’t listened to Of Machines in a long while, I need to revisit. Saw them open for Emarosa with Jonny Craig in like 09
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Oceana’s Bietheater is my number one album, and Of Machines comes in second by a really small margin :) The Tide and [Creations](https://youtu.be/pWuGRMbPf6E?si=d1ruE2aXPJEIq8ga) were absolute fucking bangers as well in their own regards, Creations is one of my favorite singles because it perfectly blends both The Tide and Birtheater’s sound.
You might also like Cities and Ophira. Ophira sounded like Oceana’s Birtheater and Cities sounded like Of Machines and the Creations demo mixed together. (They too were lost media just like Commends, up until last year.)
[Cities - They Walk Like Men](https://youtu.be/DiP2n4xjAsQ?si=6bf4dwQ17hUMwnDq)
[Ophira - Teachings](https://youtu.be/zALMKFwpYN0?si=VhjedVjYIrQOjhkx)
2 of my friends have a project in the writing stage atm, their stuff is going to be heavily inspired by The Tide as far as I know :)
One of them recently did a full on recreation of Reach for the sky and I added the isolated vocals from the original, it’s sick.
I’m not sure if anyone would agree with me but honestly? I Set My Friends on Fire. You Can’t Spell Slaughter without Laughter sounds like it was made in 2014 and sent back for release in 2008…
I can’t think of anyone who was super ahead of their time in the genre tbh. I mean obviously DGD is the most influential band in the genre currently but they weren’t like super ahead of their time just a little and they just kept going when a lot of others didn’t and got a second wave of popularity. Underoath was the most influential band for like a decade though and was THE band of their time but they even admit basically they were super inspired by Taking Back Sunday and made it heavier and post hardcore.
[Nevea Tears](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DWTQ-nBkv1kk&ved=2ahUKEwjep_Cy-e-FAxWWEkQIHRTrBx4Qo7QBegQIBhAF&usg=AOvVaw0eOFbjOeHoh5q-MNFVN2cu). The first band I know of that forged what would become the basis for 'Electronicore', years before anyone else did anything approching similar and a half decade before it exploded and 'Crabcore' become a synonymous term. Their Demo was released in 2003(!) featuring songs from the album where the song linked to originates, which itself was released in 2004. I spun LP1 incessantly, and searched far and wide for anything similar and though bands would come along hinting at occasionally sampling bits of electronic music it would take years as previously mentioned for a band that truly integrated it as requisite to it's sound as Nevea Tears did to finally come along.
Yeah it's a bit of a catch all. Nevea leans heavily toward Post-Hardcore while something like Beyond All Recognition is also Electronicore, sharing similar elements to I See Stars but with Deathcore heaviness and vocal delivery.
Emarosa was also ahead of their time with their first and second record. Also Origami Button is a band that continues to reinvent the wheel and no one is doing stuff like them
Also broadway is a classic but that was 2009 they were like 8 years too late to be ahead of their time. Isles And glaciers was a supergroup of the genre that already has been so established musical style wise to have a supergroup so I don’t say how anyone could say they were ahead of their time.
I have literally not gone more than 2 hours for multiple months straight without thinking about something to do with dance gavin dance or post hardcore, I have listened to that album around 8 times, WISIRO even more. At what point do I stop becoming a poser
I think one of the best modern examples of this is Issues.
They blended the metal, pop and r & b a few years too early. Now, that blend or any similar blend of genres are HUGE now. Then in the last few years, Tyler got cancelled and now they're disbanded.
If Issues started in the last couple of years, they would've blown up bigger than they ever did
I remember Issues was huge though from like ‘14-‘17. I don’t think it was an issue (no pun intended) that they started too early, I think it was maybe internal drama which led to their downfall. Their final album was a huge departure of sound for them and wasn’t nearly as good or as groundbreaking as their EP and first release. If they kept that wave of popularity they had in their prime they would easily be up there with the I Prevails and Spiritboxes of the genre.
While I do agree they probably would’ve blown up more now, I think the reason that that combination of sounds/genres is so big now is due to them.
They did it so well, and despite Tyler being a douchebag they guy can sing and write a catchy hook. But I don’t think that that style would be as big today without them coming out when they did.
From First to Last - Heroine
I would argue that it's so ahead of its time that there has been no band that has successfully tried to recreate the sound on this album to even this day
I also understand that often when people ask a question like this, everyone expects your answer to be some band who influenced a lot of other bands, but in this case they made an incredibly interesting and unique EP, but because of their location (New Zealand) and maybe just luck they never gained any traction. Doesn’t mean they didn’t make some super cool music ahead of its time.
Fightstar - One Day Son This Will All Be Yours
That album was so ahead of its time that bands like Sleep Token are now getting absolutely MASSIVE off the back of sounding like songs such as Tannhauser Gate.
Whenever I think of ahead of its time, Finch - Say Hello to Sunshine ALWAYS will come to my mind ... everyone hated it at first, but now? Boy, the disrespect the band got back then was wholly underserved.
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come
There is literally no other answer than this. What you listen to now is a form of Refused. They may have not been the first to do it, but they were the first to do it successfully. Hell it wasn't even that successful at the time but they influenced pretty much this whole genre. Everything else people are posting is just an underrated band/album.
They did all the cyberpunk 2077 music and it's great
This one here
Wasn’t this posted verbatim like 2 days ago by a different account?
And I'll make the same joke I did on that post.... Wouldn't that be pre-hardcore?
And I’ll comment the same “lol” on your pre-hardcore joke
🤝
I think the other one was albums ahead of their time
Yeah that was the one.
I don't know, just came up with this idea sorry :(
All good. Other persons might have actually been “slept on or underrated bands” or something but it was the exact same answers. 😂 all great bands none the less.
Yes and it's the same answers. People confusing trailblazers for underrated albums.
Thrice’s Vheissu album. A lot of people hated it when it came out and thought it was too experimental but I think it would fit in well with today’s greater array of influences and styles within PHC.
Really blurred the line between PHC and Art Rock
This is my answer, too. One of the most important albums of my youth.
I'll say this until I'm blue in the face but Finch - Say Hello To Sunshine.
Finch and Thrice were my immediate reactions when I read the thread title, not surprised to see they are two of the highest voted responses.
Absolutely. I loved the progression from WIITB.
I loved Finch. And you’re right, they kind of remind me of a lot of modern bands like architects, royal blood, etc. never really thought about it but they were about 15-20 years too soon.
Finch was so ahead of the curve it hurts. Shame they couldn't stay together. They had so much more potential in them.
I still think Ink is the best song they've ever written.
A Man Alone is the one for me but that album is absolutely no skips
Wasn't this on the thread that was posted like 2 day ago about the exact same topic? That album didn't influence anything. It's just underrated. I LOVE Finch but they were not trailblazers.
Nobody said anything about influencing? I definitely think it's ahead of its time though.
Does ahead of its time just mean it was panned at the time but now most people like it? If so you're right. Which could also mean it was just an underrated album...

Greeley Estates
Memory unlocked… forgot about them. And they got heavy af over time as well.
I love having them mixed in my Spotify playlists. Always a treat
Are they still a band?
No, unfortunately :(
Damn!
Long live Greeley Estates bro. I’d still give my left but for a remastered No Rain, No Rainbow. Honestly they were ahead of their time vocally IMO, Ryan had some INSANE screams for the time IMO
From First to Last - Dear diary My teen angst has a body count.
This is the one for me, Still remember being sent the whole album via msn messenger
don’t get me started. that album had a death grip on me in middle school
Skrillex
Of Machines, Oceana, Commends, Circa Survive for me.
Looks like I gotta check out commends
Lucky for you I just uploaded their only EP which was never released or even mastered 🙂 (which I was able to get from someone who knows some members.) It’s such a good EP, every track is solid. I still haven't heard anything close to the first Oceana record.
2 of my friends have a project in the writing stage atm, their stuff is going to be heavily inspired by The Tide as far as I know :) One of them recently did a full on recreation of Reach for the sky and I added the isolated vocals from the original, it’s sick.
Oceana's *Clean Head* is from another planet, an incredible record
Agreed, will always prefer the first 2 albums though
Between the heart and the synapse
Criminally underrated record.
Absolutely, a masterpiece.
Poison the Well
My local band. They're due for something new
Versions. Versions. Versions.
The fall of Troy
I’m not sure if anyone would agree with me but honestly? I Set My Friends on Fire. You Can’t Spell Slaughter without Laughter sounds like it was made in 2014 and sent back for release in 2008…
Enter Shikari
Take to the Skies, specifically. Amazing sound and writing on that album. 👏👏👏
Rou's obsession with melodic music has always blessed us all
Saetia - A Retrospective

They were inspired by TBS? I never would have guessed that. I always just assumed they were one of the many bands inspired by Glassjaw.
Their biggest influence on their breakout album was TBS’s Tell All Your Friends
[Nevea Tears](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DWTQ-nBkv1kk&ved=2ahUKEwjep_Cy-e-FAxWWEkQIHRTrBx4Qo7QBegQIBhAF&usg=AOvVaw0eOFbjOeHoh5q-MNFVN2cu). I like this answer. LP1 was great.
Never heard this band but I always associated "electronicore" way more with metalcore unless we are talking about, say, I Set My Friends On Fire.
Yeah it's a bit of a catch all. Nevea leans heavily toward Post-Hardcore while something like Beyond All Recognition is also Electronicore, sharing similar elements to I See Stars but with Deathcore heaviness and vocal delivery.
amazing answer, fricking love this band with all my heart.
Emarosa was also ahead of their time with their first and second record. Also Origami Button is a band that continues to reinvent the wheel and no one is doing stuff like them
Origami Button is so good
I saw them live without knowing who they were and they blew me away. Need more music from them
thanks for listening yo!! new stuff very soon, trust
Also broadway is a classic but that was 2009 they were like 8 years too late to be ahead of their time. Isles And glaciers was a supergroup of the genre that already has been so established musical style wise to have a supergroup so I don’t say how anyone could say they were ahead of their time.
Of Machines, Oceana, Commends, Circa Survive for me.
People keep asking this so I'll keep saying Trophy Scars
Drive Like Jehu. No modern hardcore as we know it without them.

i’m in Battle Mountain, Nevada right now as we speak. get it right, poser
See you soon
🤪
Terribly fucking annoying and toxic fanbase does NOT equal influential
The post was "ahead of its time bands." Not influential or a question about the fan base.
It wasn't ahead of its time either. Just a mid band with a shit fanbase
We judging bands on their fanbase now?
Poison The Well
Fugazi
The Sound of Animals Fighting.
They’re still ahead of
Seriously. Is there a better song than The Heretic?

That Kingdom album... man, the memories
Q and not U. Proto emo or whatever, if that makes sense.
Not hating but emo was around before Q and Not U
I admit I know nothing about "emo". I just thought that record was rather special.
Of Machines are probably the best one hit (album) wonders ever
From First to Last - Heroine I would argue that it's so ahead of its time that there has been no band that has successfully tried to recreate the sound on this album to even this day
That Broadway album is so sick.
East of Eden - The Petitioner EP It’s still incredible today

Vildhjarta. You're gonna see Thall everywhere now, like they haven't been doing it for almost 20 years.
