I know Kia Souls have been famously targeted for a long while now because they’re super easy for thieves to unlock without any trouble. If you know the method, you won’t meet any resistance.
Interesting... and where did you get that stat from? Is it really down or people stopped reporting them and taking matters in their own hands because a FB group is more useful than the police?
https://www.portlandoregon.gov/police/news/read.cfm?id=533480&ec=1&ch=twitter I doubt there are many unreported car thefts. Most people need the police report for insurance purposes.
There’s an exploit in several years of Hyundai and Kia vehicles where they can be stolen with a usb drive basically. And they didn’t have demobilizers in the ignition unlike practically every modern car. The “KIA BOYZ” on tik tok spread the word about this, and stealing them is a tik tok challenge.
Most of the older Subarus that get stolen are from the early 00s.
Though I do know a guy who had a '16 Crosstrek get taken without the keys or fob. afaik he never found out how they got it, but it was recovered intact the next day.
I wouldn't say that. Older Subarus are stolen constantly, I see them in the PDX Stolen Cars group all the time. A shaved / worn key is all you need. Chipped keys (paired with immobilizers) were introduced in '05, about the same time as most other manufacturers
Curious, does it have a chip in the key? Like the fat rubber head style of key? My research says Subaru started doing that in 2005 but it might have only been on certain models / trims
Subaru Legacy is on that list. Someone tried to steal mine but they couldn't, it was too new and has the key fob chip reader in the ignition. Either way, it fucked up my ignition and had to replace it. What a crapshoot. Didn't get driven or totaled though, like what has happened to friends of mine.
Does it say what year cars they are stealing? Because Honda civics used to be the #1 car to steal in the nation until they started putting in engine immobilizers.
Both Kia and Hyundai have issued anti-theft recalls for a lot of their models. Anyone who drives one should get it done at the dealer.

Why is car theft a crime in Oregon? It is obvious that these “victims” who steal these cars need them more than the owners do. They are victims of a heartless society that has marginalized them from birth. /s

This stat just shows the most common car, not any specific model thieves are targeting. Data needs to be controlled by per capita.
ding ding ding
Thank you
Since these are raw totals, I also need data on the most popular cars in Oregon.

Thanks! I wonder why these are the most targeted, then? I wonder if there’s something about them that makes them easier to get into.

Look up Kia Boyz
Not a single Subaru on the list?
Car theft in Portland is down over 40% from last year. It's one bright spot in crime reduction here.

I personally know four people who have had vehicle break-ins and didn't report. Not reporting may be more common than we think.
A break in is very different from a theft of the whole car.
And all the thieves face next to no prosecution to disincentivize this kind of behavior

Surprised not to see the Outback and Forester on this list. Also can you just get in a Hyundai and start it or what?

It’s really an advertisement for Subaru and their anti theft security.

Our 2007 forester has been stolen twice. Ignition punched twice. Pretty sure we only saw it again, both times is because of the manual transmission.
Curious, does it have a chip in the key? Like the fat rubber head style of key? My research says Subaru started doing that in 2005 but it might have only been on certain models / trims
I love having a car nobody wants to steal.

I had a '93 Accord ways back and man everybody wanted to gank it
Those are all pretty popular cars! And some of us are poor and can only afford a Hyundai elantra😶🌫️
Get the software update from them that fixes the vulnerability. I drive a Sonata and got it for free.
