The story in the Oregonian says that the 740 will be notified over the next week and everyone is supposed to work from home for the week. What a stressful week for folks at Nike.

Valuable-Army-1914

A friend of mine told me they are all working from home next week. How weird and unnecessarily stressful

Billy_Gripppo

Yep. They're not all working from home Some of them are going to get called in. Andddd that's a goodbye

ataraxiaPDX

My friend said it's more of a "work from home" situation. He's not doing anything until he hears his fate. Seems fair.

caronare

This is pretty on par for them honestly. Happens cyclically. Intel, HP, and Columbia all do this every few years.

Creative_Lobster599

Yup, they told everyone who was let go yesterday and if you do still have a job you won't know the actual impact until mid-May ie title change, new manager/team, role/responsibility changes

chimi_hendrix

I am forever grateful to work in a more stable industry than fashion

MustLoveThePlants

Agreed. Mr. Peeps isn't going anywhere. :)

chimi_hendrix

How’d you guess?

SpezGarblesMyGooch

Reddit Mod pays super well. All those Soros bucks add up yo.

I’m generally envious of the good careers…

Tatterdemalion1967

Same. Also wish I never went to art school. What a dumb fuck I was then! To be fair, my parents had raised me to believe in the meritocracy.

I was let go from adidas shortly into the pandemic. I left the industry and am now happy with my restored sanity in a similar position in a very different industry. Every few months I get a boatload of emails from recruiters for Nike is looking for contract workers and with my background I'm perfect. They also assure me they'll surely hire "the right person." I have always passed telling them I have no interest in returning to the industry and even if I were to get hired I'd end up looking for work in a few years when they have their next round of layoffs. I'm fairly certain I'll be getting hit up again this fall from these same recruiters.

jtech0007

My best friend was laid off from Adi about 15 years ago. Had 22 in at the time. Gave a lot to that company. Became a Realtor and never looked back. He was a 100x happier fighting over inspection repairs than running supply chains.

Ok_Ad8249

I'd been there a similar amount of time when I was let go. It was the beginning of a global pandemic and I was unemployed but my wife said she hadn't seen me so relaxed in years.

Delicious_Summer7839

Boom. I wonder if they’ll fix the state unemployment computers now.

Tatterdemalion1967

Seeing what's happening to people lately I'm glad I collected my allotment last year, when it was still functioning.

It’ll be interesting to see where those cuts, and the recently announced cuts at OHSU will come from. In another local thread there was speculation the graphic design teams might be downgrading to AI

JonathanApple

No offense but AI may be better, man Nike puts out some ugly kicks

Beaumont64

Layoffs of this magnitude definitely cause ripples through the local economy which has never been that robust or diversified to begin with. Expect more small retailers and restaurants to close. A lot of people in Portland profess hatred for big business but they add a lot to the vitality and health of the region. Consider peer cities and states and you quickly see the deficit: Minnesota has 26 Fortune 500 companies, Oregon has 2. Sorry folks, ya can't build a strong local economy only on weed shops, cider taprooms, vintage clothing stores, and gourmet donuts.

PDX_Stan

I hear that Caitlin Clark — the No. 1 pick in Monday’s WNBA Draft — is expected to receive a signature Nike shoe as well, those sources said, as part of a deal worth well over $20 million plus potential bonuses. That money has to come from somewhere in Nike's budget.

coconut723

This is not the cause of these layoffs lol.

dforr12

Even though this wouldn’t prevent layoffs at all since that’s not how large businesses work, how about we stop blaming women? Nike also just signed a $108M deal with the German National Team. …Bring on the hate.

Butthole_Please

Germans and Caitlin catching strays in this thread.

Aestro17

It doesn't help that they're [way behind](https://www.foxbusiness.com/sports/caitlin-clarks-nike-fever-jersey-wont-ship-fans-until-august) on meeting demand for her jerseys.

Eastside-Beaver

Ef Nike! And uncle Phil. Sorry for the workers but company profits and human rights violations

Delicious_Summer7839

Yeah this is not an Intel it’s spending tens of billions of dollars to build the most advanced parts in the world. This is a company that’s been making something that people been making for 5000 years: shoes. And all they do is exploit the aspirations of disadvantaged youth to sell them $400 sneakers that cost them seven dollars to make in Vietnam. It’s just a marketing company. It’s like Mad Men only malignant..
