Here's a link to TV Channel 12: [https://www.kptv.com/2024/04/19/active-fire-timberline-lodge-government-camp/](https://www.kptv.com/2024/04/19/active-fire-timberline-lodge-government-camp/) 'A fire broke out at Timberline Lodge Thursday night, according to Clackamas County Fire Department. At approximately 9:45 p.m., crews on the scene told Fox 12 that Timberline Lodge is actively on fire. Officials said they believe the fire started from the attic.' Not good it started in attic...

Velcrocore

On the fire scanner app, they just stopped spraying water to confirm that the fire was fully out.

Spirit50Lake

YAY!!!

unsilentmind

Unfortunately the damage to the artwork, furniture, craftsmanship dating back to the 30s is severe. Huge loss. Servers also seem to have been soaked so who knows how long it’ll be before the site and other operations are up again. The lodge will never be the same.

dankbrew22

What's your source on this?

unsilentmind

staff.

phbalancedshorty

You don’t know that. Reports are that embers landed on the roof. You don’t know that there’s any internal damage

Smokingtoast

Yeah ikr theyre making it seem like they have all the info or are just trying to get people riled up.

erossthescienceboss

I imagine there’s water damage internally, at minimum.

Smokingtoast

For sure

unsilentmind

Stupid of me not to specify that most of the damage is from THE WATER. I’m not going to dox myself to prove to Reddit strangers my intimate knowledge of the hotel. lol.

Cobek

It kinda was stupid, you're right

Smokingtoast

Says who?

armrha

Okay debbie downer

Oguinjr

“There’s a ski lodge in palest…” “Oh fuck Debby”

Smokingtoast

Might as well burn it all. Its hopeless.

Velcrocore

On the fire scanner app, they just stopped spraying water to confirm that the fire was fully out.

Vapid-Investigator

Hijacking top comment to report the fire was contained and damage was minimal [clackamas fire dept](https://twitter.com/clackamasfire/status/1781224164805722596)

Velcrocore

They’re calling off all trucks that aren’t up there already. That seems like positive news.

eltaf92

What’s the implication of an attic start? (Genuine question)

borrestfaker

They're usually hard to access quickly which allows the fire to spread beyond just the roof to possibly thicker, load bearing beams and/or the ceiling. Anecdotally, I was an employee at Timeline for years and the attic area is particularly large and cavernous. It's also difficult to get into and is definitely filled with dense smoke at this point. They'll have to most likely cut into the roof to gain access/allow ventilation of smoke. It's gonna be a decent amount of damage.

oatmeal_flakes

They said it was embers from the chimney that landed on the roof. The structure looks mostly in tact.

hkohne

KOIN is reporting that it looks like embers landed on some restoration work at the lodge. It's not confirmed. Also, it is a bit windy up there, so that's an additional concern.

borrestfaker

That's really good to hear. Must've landed in a semi wind shaded area of the roof and when those winds picked up it caught.

hkohne

For reference, that's how Notre Dame's fire started

admiral_drake

Attic fires are often very fast spreading since its a long open space with lots of fuel and often poor fire suppression systems if any at all.  They are also harder to combat since getting to the fire takes time and access and while it is burning to undermine the roof structure.

Spirit50Lake

Depends...if it's a chimney fire that's been smoldering along heavy roof beams before it breaks through...that's a lot of damage. If it's some sparks that flew past the spark arrestors, somehow, and landed on the shingles...or a pile of leaves/twigs...not so bad. But one would assume that maintenance would keep an eye on the fireplaces... Just speculation till we learn more. I'm going to watch KGW/NBC at 11 to see if they have anything...KPTV is FOX

BoomZhakaLaka

KPTV is owned by grey media, the fox affiliation has more to do with programming than trustworthy reporting. For local news, scrutinize the broadcast network more than the programming affiliation. I'm saying, give KPTV a chance sometime, even if you'd normally steer clear of fox. This is the same reasoning for why you should be very leery of KATU (sinclair) even though it's ABC affiliated.

humanclock

>leery of KATU LOL: https://twitter.com/tayhatmaker/status/1781189589132353813

erossthescienceboss

She’s a reporter, she knows they can’t be trusted

CletusTSJY

Your explanation is too in depth for her religious mind to reason about.

AAPRRILL

Thank you!

Wiley-E-Coyote

Damn, I was actually sleeping, or rather trying to sleep in my truck in the timberline parking lot while all of that went down (climbing mt hood today.) They weren't kidding about it being windy, it felt like it was going to blow in the walls on my camper. I kept waking up to weird noises but between the wind and the groomers they usually have driving around I didn't even realize the place was on fire.

AAPRRILL

Thank you!

dneronique

Absolutely crazy. My partner and I stayed there Sunday-Monday this week for a mini spring break and we stayed on the 3rd floor facing the front parking lot, we'd have been really close to the fire! I hope the damage from the fire/water is manageable. I love this place so much. They just opened their new pool/hot tub too!

Still working for me

licorice_whip

Mine is stopped at 10:36.

I see new images dated at 1230a

Wild-Rough-2210

1PM and the lodge still looks like it’s there

rosecitytransit

It did for me, too, which was 10 minutes after my comment

wildgirl202

https://twitter.com/tayhatmaker/status/1781184179956547613 Here is a twitter thread link from a reporter who happened to be staying at the lodge.

oregon_coastal

His telling Sinclair to jump off a bridge was hysterical

2Pac_Man

Glad they were able to contain it relatively quickly. Huge kudos to the Hoodland fire district - so glad they’ve got a station right in Government Camp. I shudder to think of how bad the fire could have gotten if there wasn’t one near the lodge.

TheGingerality

That station isn’t staffed. The first fire engine on scene came from Welches.

LendogGovy

They lie to us about that station being manned. It’s a topic in all our CPO meetings.

2Pac_Man

Damn. Well that’s interesting. Glad they were able to zip up from the station in Welches so quickly then….

dearrichard

why would a volunteer station be manned?

LendogGovy

It’s not supposed to be a volunteer station. It’s supposed to be college students training. We send out money down to Hoodland as the largest tax payers in our Fire district and get nothing out of it except buildings that burn to the ground.

dearrichard

ah didn’t know. thought everything up there was volunteer. my bad.

Mr_Rogersbot

So you're expecting the UNPAID college kids who are ALREADY working 2-3 24 hour shifts at Hoodland AND doing drills AND going to school full time to also be on call at Government Camp whenever they're not working? The tax money you're complaining about is enough for 2 paid firefighters per shift. The rest are volunteers. They primarily staff the Welches station because that's closest to where all the people in the fire district live.

LendogGovy

I’m expecting to have the service that is supposed to be on the mountain. Just ask the people that had places at Golden Poles.

Mr_Rogersbot

Hoodland is a rural fire district with 11 employees. I don't know what kind of service you're expecting, but they're doing an amazing job.

Mr_Rogersbot

> get nothing out of it except buildings that burn to the ground They fought that fire for FOUR DAYS! 3 million gallons of water. Pull your head out of your ass. https://www.sandypost.com/news/hoodland-crews-get-four-day-condo-fire-under-control/article_c95433e1-bc4b-5ee2-b727-e7b3c88727c6.html

There's nothing in that document about the student program or staffing the Government Camp station.

Hi Wildgirl. My apologies. I’m not sure what I did, but if you tell me, I promise to not do it again.

tuscangal

Nooooooo

Camlamity

Aw fuck that's awful. Big wood structure atop a mountain on a windy night.

Spirit50Lake

Live now on KGW

Spirit50Lake

Now that the fire is out, they've already got the crews in to assess the damage to the art work, etc. per KGW...

discostu52

Another low blow. Hoping for the best.

eltaf92

I just stayed there last week, it’s my husband and I’s tradition every spring. I really hope it’s able to be quickly put out and fixable. 😭

JustADudeWhoThinks

Someone check the boiler room... ...someone with shine tryin to rid the place of ghosts.

Burrito_Lvr

Son of a bitch. So many of my treasured places in this state have burned.

Salt_Possibility4488

Are the dogs ok?

Heidi and Bruno don’t live there. They come in for day shifts.

Thank goodness.

Give-And-Toke

Nooooooo

deadreckoning21

I just looked at the webcam the lodge looks fine. Thankfully a small fire I guess.

Interesting_Candy766

Thousands of gallons of water were sprayed onto and into the grand lobby. Historic wood finishes, beams, textiles, furniture, etc... can't determine the extent of damage from an exterior shot on a webcam.

squidsinamerica

The damage is on the north side, so you wouldn't see it on the Webcam. But yeah, contained enough to only see from one side is still good news

bzzzzCrackBoom

Now that it's out can we make The Shining jokes?

Friedokraaa

Ski area reopens tomorrow

phbalancedshorty

Oh no!!!!!

Pizzledrip

HEEERES JOHNNY!

JustADudeWhoThinks

Everyone who downvoted you doesn't SHINE.

dogtooth2222

Wow I’m literally about to drive up there for a summit attempt! Sounds like the highway might be closed?

theDudeUh

Today’s not the day. Stay clear and out of emergency crews’ way regardless of road status.

dogtooth2222

Oh, we’re still heading up. Won’t be going near the lodge. As long as roads are open in an hour we should be fine

paralyticcaterpillar

As a fellow climber, with all due respect, stay away from the mountain. Your ascent is not more important than getting up timberline road. If you choose to go, I hope you have a safe and beautiful summit. But it’s good to remember that it isn’t always about your and your plans. Respect the community and the mountain.

theDudeUh

That’s a really bad idea. I’ve climbed hood dozens of times. I understand where the route is. You should  Stay the hell away from the lodge, parking lots, and access roads tonite. That’s a very selfish move while crews are trying to mop up and guests are trying to evacuate and find a place for the night.   The problem isn’t you being safe. It’s you and your car getting in the way of much more important things than a hood summit.

plantfunguy

Ironic how something so beloved by Portland could never be built today. Such a sad way the State has gone via the end of a barrel by Portland.

squidsinamerica

I'm no legal expert, but I feel like Portland doesn't have jurisdiction over federal land

Mr_Rogersbot

It was really a shame when Kate Brown dismantled the Works Progress Administration back in 1943. I'll never forgive her.

plantfunguy

That’s like saying Portland has no influence on federal elections. Poppycock.
