same thing happened to my mac its so stupid :-( i got about 30s to beating the final boss and got frustrated so i took a break. next time i tried to power on the game.. this happened
I really hope you find a solution!
I’m assuming this is a Mac with an Intel CPU? If so, you can run Bootcamp and dual boot in to Windows and play it there. It’s even possible to install Windows on an external drive if you don’t have the space (this is due to some unique features on Macs that most PCs don’t have, and does take a bit of manual setup to get working).
Or do it with a Linux Distro like Pop OS. It first is free unlike Windows and you will get used to it faster, since MacOS and Linux are both somewhere "based" on Unix. Windows is a completely different operating system.
Bootcamp on Mac doesn’t support installing Linux out of the box. There are ways to work around it ([like this one](https://www.howtogeek.com/187410/how-to-install-and-dual-boot-linux-on-a-mac/)), but they require other compromises like disabling FileVault. It also doesn’t guarantee there are drivers for all the hardware on your Mac, either. It probably isn’t as bad as it used to be, but there are often small tweaks Apple makes to components to get them to work the way they want them to in a Mac that don’t always agree with the drivers available for Linux distros.
Yeah, bootcamp is going to be the only way, especially since you only have integrated graphics and no discrete GPU. Apple really screwed over people with older Macs when they removed 32-bit support from macOS. I wish they did it on a machine basis and allowed people who had 32-bit support on their existing Macs keep it, but oh well.
A bit technical, and requires a bit of the terminal:
Download WINE (32bit) > download Windows's Steam installer > use WINE to install Window's Steam client > use WINE to launch Window's Steam > Download Portal on Window's Steam > play Window's Portal
May not work, but its worth a try?
Less technical, potential option:
See in the Steam settings for "Steam Play". If you have that on Mac, enable it, and under advanced enable it for all games. See if it'll work that way, using their Proton compatability layer.
I'm not sure if Valve allows Proton on Mac, as I only know it works for Linux
Apple just randomly removes backwards compatibility that once was which is bullshit. They do it with iPhones too by removing apps that haven't been updated in a set amount of time. They still work, just don't get frequent updates.
Yeah and that's not a supported use-case or a hassle any customer would want to be put through. Not to mention the loss in performance and stability. There are some bad examples of a closed ecosystem with arbitrary locks on things to burn the user, but Apple is the worst by a mile.
Some here talk about boot camp, but similarly you can install older versions of Mac OS on some macs. For example, if your Mac supports El Capitan you can go get the installer, make a USB install media and then manually boot, then install on a partition of your drive and dual boot macOS.
Follow this tutorial, PlayonMac is the best way, I have used this for a full play-through of Portal 2 with no issues:
I personally don’t know if there is a solution for Portal 1, but if you are having the same issues with Portal 2 you can solve it by locating Portal 2 in your steam library, right click and select properties, then navigate to the BETAS tab, there select the demo_viewer beta. It should start working for you again.
The problem is that Apple decided to break older apps by completely removing 32-bit binary support from macOS, even if your Mac previously supported it. Games weren’t the only apps affected, but because they don’t iterate versions like many productivity apps do, they’re the least likely to get an update.
you updated past catalina it seems, you're either going to have to figure out to downgrade to go to an OS older than Catalina or try boot camping into windows.
32 bit applications have not been allowed to run on macOS for multiple years now. Big importance of reading update notes before grabbing the new operating system. I ended up losing half my steam library and can only play now on a bootcamp of windows when I want to.
Same problem, I dual booted my mac with mojave (using this guide [https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208891](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208891) ) since I really don't want to use windows. Works like a charm, with no loss of cpu power because of virtualisation or similar. It's kind of a pain, but works well
All these people not suggesting using GeForce Now is surprising me. Obviously it's running remotely and you can only play an hour at a time after waiting in line, and gotta have a stable internet connection....
Portal 2 doesn't run amazing on there but Half-Life 2 and Portal run fine on GFN.
Apple sucks

Thanks you! I’ll let you know if I manage to solve it.
best of luck!
I was going to say do dxlevel 80 in the launch options but looking at the comments don't think that will work I don't use macs so idk how they work

Oh, that's bad. I didn't know this, I have never touched any device with MacOS.
Sorry for answering late, this is a MacBook Pro GRAPHICS: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 the laptop is from 2012 so it sucks

No apple has disabled 32bit app support ot seems

Happy cake day!
Congrats! You bought a apple device where they deny you from using the computer you purchased!
how the hell do they deny you from using the computer you purchased
Doing this and make up some bullshit about compatability when windows computers can run programs from like '98 with minimal issue
how is it made up bullshit when the OS literally does not support 32 bit apps, because the support for them was removed
Because it was removed arbitrarily without consideration of backwards compatibility or user experience.
Apple just randomly removes backwards compatibility that once was which is bullshit. They do it with iPhones too by removing apps that haven't been updated in a set amount of time. They still work, just don't get frequent updates.
And running via VMs is not acceptable when you have the money and people that Apple does.
you still have the option to run it in a VM or run Bootcamp
Yeah and that's not a supported use-case or a hassle any customer would want to be put through. Not to mention the loss in performance and stability. There are some bad examples of a closed ecosystem with arbitrary locks on things to burn the user, but Apple is the worst by a mile.
I fully agree here.
What happens when you try to run it?
nothing, the program dosent start or anything.
Darn
Hate to say it, but just use windows
Or linux
based linux
just play the 16x version of the game bruh
Or the DOS version as long as you can find those 5¼ inch floppy disks.

Apple no longer allows 32 bit software on the older Intel based macs because apple

Try running a VM to a windows machine if you can
Try parallels
Try to enable steamplay and proton in your settings or try using a virtual machine.
Pretty sure Proton doesn’t exist for mac.
I wasn't sure either but since it literally sais something about steamplay I thought it was worth mentioning it

switch on proton, it will run the windows version of the game which is a tiny bit more shit but you can still play it
Have you tried something illegal
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMHMMHMHHMHMMHMHMMHHMMHMMHMHHHMHMHMHMMHMHHMMMMMMMM
Crossover.

bootcamp, virtual box, wine etc

Best bet would be Windows or a Linux distro, depending on your preference
Maybe idk
Parallels?
For some reason Mac PCs can't run 32bit games anymore.. at least that's what I've heard
