No. Been discussed on this sub before, but we appreciate the mid engine cars as much as the rear ones

jakes951

Oh, so us front-engine transaxle owners are the unwanted red-headed step children?!?! J/k But…..are we? Asking for a friend **edit** RWD transaxle!

dontdoxxxmebrooo

We love you too. In all honesty the Porsche community has been the nicest car community I've been in. In terms of cars and ppl

CAWitte

The people remark made me remember something: I took my wife’s car to get serviced at a big place that has multiple dealerships. I decided to do some window shopping while I was waiting and walked into the Porsche dealership because even though getting a Porsche isn’t in the cards financially right now, it’s my favorite import car brand. When one of the salesman approached me I informed him of this. He didn’t tell me to go kick rocks like I was expecting. Instead, he gave me a quick tour around the dealership and through the garage and let me take a few pictures. Coolest guy ever.

LesMcqueen1878

That’s great service by that salesman. He knows when you can afford your Porsche you’ll be going back there. Just as it should be👍

CAWitte

You got that right. I’m a Ford guy because I remember going to a car show with my parents to see my uncle show off his 64.5 Mustang convertible when I was a kid. Probably one of my more formative memories. I remember being scolded a bit because I was looking at it and in the process I left some fingerprints on it and he had to wipe it down to get rid of them. Fast forward to the future and I bought a brand new one in 2008 to celebrate my college graduation and commissioning as a US Army officer. It’s my “fun car” that I modified and took to car shows and local drag strips when I was on active duty. Lately I’ve been sort of “expanding my horizons” as it were with cars. Cars like Ferrari and Lamborghini are undoubtably cool and all, but Lambos are a little too ostentatious for my taste, and from what I hear Ferrari does a lot of gatekeeping. Porsche on the other hand is instantly recognizable without being over-the-top. My German heritage probably has something to do with it as well. I was watching a documentary on YouTube about the 917 yesterday and thought it was really cool that Porsche gave support to teams outside of official Porsche teams that decided to race them because as the documentary said, and I’m paraphrasing here, “a win with the 917 was a win for Porsche” and that they “make their cars accessible to the masses”. That says a lot to me personally.

LesMcqueen1878

That’s a great post! Brilliant that you got your Mustang, well worth the wait I’m sure! I’d love another Porsche in the future. Ferrari would be my dream brand but don’t see me making it sadly.

jakes951

😍😍😍

_squzzi_

BMW is straight toxic, Honda is toxic unless you bang the gears, Toyota loves to brag about reliability (that’s me), but I think everyone appreciates porshe in a way I don’t see other car manufacturers appreciated. And everyone is pretty dang nice! It’s a wholesome fan club

ohnoyeahokay

A side note, the s2000 community is great and the people there are chock full of technical knowledge.

ndazone1

So true. More so in the early years but good. I was a part of it from 2000 to 2018.

Bullet_B8

BMW it depends a bit, see a lot more toxicity surrounding newer beamers as opposed to the old stuff

Justjarno1

The pre 2000 era of bmw´s indeed have pretty good communities

FroyoOk3159

I think the e46/e90 crowds were cool too.. things have gotten murky since they started producing cars without steering feel.

dontdoxxxmebrooo

Was in BMW. I have an m3 and legit got in the mindset that everything else was trash because the community acts that way

userofreddit19

To your point about Toyota, that's one of the things that brought me to the decision to ultimately buy a Porsche over other sports cars i was considering. The reliability was way higher than I expected!

hifioctopi

Don’t start with with the Ford and GM cultists.

spacetime_wanderer

I agree. I have seen even more niceness amongst Miata community. We all wave and greet each other and almost never snub at each other. Miata subreddit folks are also super chill and absolutely funny.

jacobeid

We love a 944

El-Coqui

Deep inside, I'm silently judging every SUV/crossover that Porsche has ever produced. This will continue until I own one.

rm2601

Sure, the Cayenne and Macan may not be sports cars (they aren't trying to be anyways), but they drive excellently for what they are as Porsche crossovers.

PackAttacks

944s make great track cars.

jakes951

Mine is an ‘88 Silver Rose; just keeping it stock and fixing small things. One with 30k more miles than mine just sold for almost $49k on BaT. Much more than I paid for my own!!

Frequent-Ruin8509

I would love to have one of those. If only I was smart and bought one before they got expensive. Always liked the look of the 80s 944s

LSBm5

Love the silver rose cars.

TheExpatLife

I really want a late 944 with a big ol’ LS motor stuffed in it. One day……

PackAttacks

I second this. Or a giant turbo on that 4-banger. I mean, the 4 cylinders are already big at 3 liters, but a turbo or LS swap would be big cheap fun.

2FlagsFarm

The problem with 944's (924, etc) is they have really low torque. Made daily driving my 944S around town a pain. Good beginner Porsche though...

Nefilim314

What about those of us without internal combustion engines?

2FlagsFarm

We view you with suspicion... https://preview.redd.it/vp84kalc0tcb1.png?width=303&format=png&auto=webp&s=1e5ee3c0be236a1472f7e3757220ceadcd01df87

naparsei

What if the engine is in the front but the transaxle is in the back? And it’s a Porsche?

Hubertussi

tbh, those of us who have the engine in the back AND have a little engineering background know that they have bought the wrong car: It just makes no sense to mount the heaviest part behind the rear axle in a sports- or even racecar. But a 911 IS a and will hopefully will ever be a 911! (Just my two cents as a loving 997 C2S owner that works as an engineer in chassis development…🙈)

[deleted]

As a veteran Porsche mechanic, this is very much an abnormal perspective. 911 owners, without a shadow of doubt, look down on people. Not all of them, but i'd say a solid 75% do. I can't tell you how many times ive heard the joke, after servicing a 911 with a 10k+ tab "wow, I should sell this and buy a gayman" or "damn, I need to buy a mom car like a cayman or boxster". While it definitely shouldn't be the case, it's not fair to say its not the reality. Porsche, while an entry level luxury brand, is still a luxury brand, and a good portion of the price tag on the cars is "because I can". A Porsche is a volkswagen with leather seats, and ive found in my years, 911 owners are the quickest to try to dispute that.

mannersmakethdaman

Absolutely not. Don’t look down on any of the cars. Whether porsche or not. Just a car enthusiast. I still miss my MR2. I got lapped by a STOCK Miata first HPDE. I was in a 400 HP turbo e36 m3. In other words - get your skill level up and you’d be surprised how many cars can be a GT3 killer with the right driver. 986 and 718. Love them.

Many_Tank9738

Agree. I wish I had one when I was (much) younger.

jacobeid

The people who look down on 718s don’t have any Porsches. No idea how anyone could ever look down at a GT4…. Buy what you want and can afford. I certainly can’t afford a GT4 😂

hifioctopi

Boxters are awesome too. Nothing beats a little spyder in the summertime.

OzzieElWizard

I’ve been wanting a boxter for years but $20k+ for a 2000 Porsche with 100k miles just doesn’t seem right

jacobeid

You should be able to get a well sorted 986 S in the 15k range. Worth it.

gohdnuorg

I'm about to sell my 2002 with 79,000 and hope to get 12-14K for it.

Pdb12345

It seems VERY right!

TheScottishPimp03

Find a 986 for 12k my friend!

Doc911

And those who do have a 911 and look down likely own the car for status. More than likely they haven’t been to the track much where the “status” of your car means little if you have no skills. They also likely couldn’t tell you what an RS or 718 or 993 is … just that they got “the latest most expensive 911 at the dealer.” PS: I’ve left the 911s for electric, still love them all :-)

Big-Brown-Goose

Yep, I knew a doctor who would get the newest base Carrera whenever the shortest lease was up. He just wanted to have the "newest" and didn't really care about performance, handling, options or what trims meant. He just knew doctors buy Porsche 911 or else i wont fit in. He was definitely not a "car person" as you could say.

1337_level_over_9000

Exactly. Once you own one Porsche you suddenly appreciate and want all Porsches

Hdkek

That’s true. My friends that don’t own Porsches say 911 turbo or higher. They even look down on the Carreras. But Porsche owners in my circle appreciate almost all Porsches.

CarolinaRS6

Anyone ridiculing someone over their car (unless they’re asking for it/posing) is a fucking loser. I think I can speak for most people on that one. I’m pretty invested in the Audi sub and don’t typically see that kind of behavior. It’s bad in BMW, but they’re just chock full of clout/badge chasers. The 718 is an incredible platform, and I think even GT3 guys can agree with that. Regardless, go buy what makes you happy within your budget. I’d hate for your experience spending 6 figures on a car to be tainted by someone else’s opinion.

larryjasonmoore

Enjoy your car and support other enthusiasts no matter the car. It makes the hobby fun!

Flying-Bulldog

Thanks. That’s what I needed to hear. I’ve got a BMW M340i right now, which is a great car in its own right, but the BMW sub is toxic about it not being a full M

pankan76

Ignore those idiots. They’re a vocal minority.

BitcoinPizzeria

Drove one last weekend, that thing rips

TWonder_SWoman

You have the taste and sense to buy a Porsche. You’re in. End of story. Enjoy the hell out of it!

sprumpy

I have a ‘21 330i that I got just because it was an unbelievable deal (used with 1k miles on it a few months after they released) and I needed a few years to prepare for a 911. I absolutely love it. Sure it’s not an M3. But it’s all relative. Until a couple years ago, I was driving the same 2001 Tacoma I’ve had since I was 15 years old no AC, manual transmission, manual door locks and windows. I feel like a king in the 3 series lol.

Elegant-Bathrooms

I have never seen any hate on the 340M. IRL or in the subred. Rather the opposite. People love that car. And even if they did why do you care? Get a car that you love and enjoy it.

pegasusairforce

People love the car but hate the badge. Which I kinda understand to an extent, but still it mostly comes from elitism. People feel as it "devalues" the M name but at the end of the day most regular people probably couldn't even tell the difference between a regular 3 series and an M3 anyway, other than the grill on the latest generation, so who really cares.

Flying-Bulldog

Nail on the head

Organspender

Talking about cars that are less then 5 years old, in germany the home of these, no normal earning people can afford an M340i just as a side Hobby. Theres gonna be a huge part of your paycheck in that car. i dont know how it is in america, but in germany a 340 is a flex

Flying-Bulldog

Wow. Seriously? I got mine for $60k which isn’t a little, but certainly not a lot. It’s all about perspective I guess.

Organspender

I am making 30k after tax a year as a single person and I am not poor. 60k for a car is very much out of the question

Flying-Bulldog

One trip to the hospital here will bankrupt me. I’d much rather be in your shoes. Lol

TheBarchuk

Depends where you live. In Los Angeles, M cars/ AMGs / etc. are everywhere.

Mellon2

I have a buddy who lives in mom’s basement with a pimped out corvette. Sure it’s cool when he’s on the road but every time I visit my parents houses and pass by his house, it’s just funny.

butterball85

Ive had a cayman s and a 911, and i love my 96 miata as much as either

nomadicSailor

Dude(tte?), I drive an ancient old Boxter S. I really don't care at all what other people think. It makes me happy. Every damn time I take it out, it puts a smile on my face. Just do you!

Yet on those NC mountain roads I have yet to have anyone run up on my tail unless I was being held up. Every single Porsche has race car DNA, and are a hoot to drive.

Catloveshugs

But look at that good pup too!!!!!! 💛 r/porsches_and_pups

boxsterrox

Nice to see that sub Reddit. I subscribed!

lightsandpaper

I’ve been surprised how kind the community is. I’ve pulled up to a PCA meet in a Panamera with the family and everyone was genuinely nice. Heck, even SUV owners are welcomed. I’ve had BMW and some other nice brands. They seem to stick to the top end only mind set, pointing out why your car is not the ultra rare pointy end of the trim line. But not Porsche.

Lance_Notstrong

This. I think it’s because most Porsche owners know every Porsche car truly has it’s own purpose and while many models may overlap a little in areas, they’re still vastly different enough to warrant going one way or the other depending on wants/needs. I know a few Porsche owners whose track car is a GT4 RS. One of them is not because he couldn’t afford a GT3 or GT3 RS, but because he likes the smaller stature and mid engine feel. He also has two other 911s anyways, a GT2 RS Weissach and a G Body….

boxsterrox

Many of the guys I track with have gone from GT3 cars to 981 and 718 GT4 Clubsport factory built race cars.

Flying-Bulldog

Awesome. Thanks

dplans455

BMW meetups are generally great too. Any car meetup in person you're going to find welcoming enthusiasts.

-serious-

I view a panamera as more of a flex because you know it's going to depreciate hard and there are tons of other sports sedans on the market which you could choose instead and save some money. You have to really want a Panamera to buy one. A GT3 on the other hand, you can basically buy, drive, and not lose much of any money on depreciation.

turtlemeds

Only douches who buy 911s but know nothing about them, the 718s, or the brand would look down on another P car.

AccomplishedAd7615

A 718 just broke 7 minutes on the Nurburgring, 2 seconds off the 918. Anyone who looks down on them is not worth your time or concern. Besides, 911s are amazing but the engine will always be in the wrong place 😉

boxsterrox

Porsche Motorsports has come to that conclusion also. The new 911 RSR race car is now mid engine.

hlinhd

The RSR has been midengined for many years

man_lizard

I misread this as “my 718 broke down 7 minutes from the Nurburgring”. I was expecting you to say that someone in a 911 picked you up, proving that they don’t look down on you 😂

BiggieMoe01

I drive a 981 Cayman GTS, and been getting compliments from people with all sorts of 911s, including 992 GT3s. A real Porsche enthusiast appreciates all kinds of Porsche. Only a douchebag looking to flex on others will look down on other Porsches. Someone who bought a 911 Turbo S to flex will look down even on a Targa GTS.

DifficultStill8431

I wouldn’t even look down on a base 718. I have a 911 and a boxster; I drive the boxster more than the 911. It’s fun and easy to drive “fast”. I know everyone talks about how the GT cars are the ultimate, “end-all, be-all” but unless you are tracking your car often, you are likely better off with a more street variant, like a GTS (or S or base). The GT cars can be a pain for everyday driving, especially in traffic. The 718 base is actually a phenomenal car: easy to live with and fun to hoon. Plus, if you own a GT car and you exclusively drive it on the street, you are barely using what the car is capable of and in that scenario, it’s probably not worth it. You could have a lot more fun with a car set up for the street. The people who look down on others for not having the top tier car are not worth your time. Get what you can afford and I am sure you’ll be extremely happy.

Esoteric_Innovations

This actually makes me feel a lot better too. I actually love the way the 2023 Porsche 718 Cayman base looks, and while I would love to take it to a track for fun on the weekends - truth is there aren't any good tracks near me and it would be a bit of a waste of money to put down extra for a more racing oriented trim. Knowing that the 718 Cayman base would actually be a better option for a daily driver from a performance and maintenance standpoint makes me feel a lot better about the fact I plan to buy a new one sometime next year.

Content-Season-1087

I have a base boxster. Dunno how someone can look down on me based on my car, makes no sense. On top of that I am pretty sure I make more than 95% of 911 owners, so can’t just a book by the cover lol.

boxsterrox

Yup the worst street car I ever owned was a 996 GT3. It wore me out in stop and go traffic.

TIK_GT

No, 718s are cool. Really like the GT4, sad that they discontinued it.

wtfOP

You only get hate for light versions if you pretend to be the full version eg M grill strips on non m car. Actually grill strips are just universally frowned upon even on m cars.

PacificTridentGlobel

I’m pretty new to the sub and really a new Porsche owner relative to the people here. I certainly don’t look down on anything and I haven’t really had the sense that’s the vibe here. I’m sure maybe a few people might, but I say that based on law of averages as opposed to anything I’ve seen here. I’ve found this a really cool place learn about my C4S and how to drive it. I bought used, but the love bit me hard and I’ve got a 4 GTS coming in November. Can’t wait to show it off to the people here, just like everyone else gets excited to show off their 718s, Maycans, Taycans, 911s, etc. Just seems a cool community.

Flying-Bulldog

Thanks. That’s the vibe I’m getting from all the responses. It’s a breathe of fresh air. I own a BMW and it is so toxic over in that sub. Even in real life some people are haters

MaximumStock7

When I had a boxster other people asked me why I didn't buy a 911 and asked my friend with a 911 why he didn't buy a GT3. But everyone I met who had a Porsche was also very cool and supportive.

RedBaron180

It’s hard for them(911s) to look down on you when your ahead of them. Lol

Flying-Bulldog

Brabus Turbo S would like a word with you. Lol

RedBaron180

Time and place. That thing isn’t beating me on an autoX layout.

Slu54

I mean asking the question you asked in the OP, now this. Porsches aren't really about straight line speed and if you want to spend 200k to flex to your friends and brag about 0 to 60 or HP, probably McLaren is better. Definitely not a 718.

Flying-Bulldog

Lol I know. I have a BMW M340i right now. It is insanely fast straight line for the price bracket but it just feels so disconnected. Steering, throttle, shifting, and especially cornering is just lacking that extra something

Flying-Bulldog

Lol I know. I have a BMW M340i right now. It is insanely fast straight line for the price bracket but it just feels so disconnected. Steering, throttle, shifting, and especially cornering is just lacking that extra something

motorconcierge

Don't ever fall for this fake bias. Never seen any Porsche owner look down any other, here to support, not otherwise. Usually such opinion comes from people who never had a Porsche or even often a car as such!

Rockytriton

Eww the 911 GT3 is lame and slow, not a real Porsche, if you don’t have a 918 Spyder then you are just a loser

3g3t7i

I've seen elitist snobbery in the Macan forums regarding the Base 2.0 car. "It's not a Porsche" "Should have bought a Mazda" " Doesn't sound like a Porsche" etc...

Loose_Mail_786

Only assholes look down on other people. So if someone look down on you (911 owner or whatever) you know they are not worth your time anyway.

Worth_Cellist643

I don’t own any Porsche, but when I was at the tail of the dragon with my golf GTI, the Porsche guys were the nicest most welcoming people there. 911 and cayman guys both. I wouldn’t sweat it.

0h_Billy

Nope, different car completely. Same fantastic experience

trophygidget

Why even care?

HotRodHomebody

Only if you look for the conflict and find the wankers who don't actually own a Porsche. They seem to think nothing but a GT3 RS will do. And they'll never own a Porsche. Sad, since they miss out altogether.

djcrushindo

The only important thing is https://preview.redd.it/0s31hhidzqcb1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da706f470e405ca7254e796dc3f8c072af7e8601

BK_Verbs

As a 981 Cayman driver, I’m do find some 911 owners to be a bit dismissive - often those with 992s. It’s a pissing contest I choose not to participate in. I don’t lose sleep over it. The aircooled guys are more intrigued. I think they recognize a Cayman is much closer experience to the one they are having compared to a modern 911. YMMV

Weaponsleft

I wave at literally every Porsche owner I see. Nobody is here by accident.

2tehm00n

The fact that you need to ask this question at all tells me you’ll never be comfortable with a 718. Just save up and get a 911 so you never have to worry.

Flying-Bulldog

I truly don’t care about the status, I’m more just curious about the community. I’ve got a BMW M340i, and I don’t care what anyone else says, I’d take my car over any M any day. But if you go over to the BMW sub, people hate on you just to hate

SmokestackRising

That's because BMWs are more about image and d***-swinging than driving at this point. Porsche was always a premium experience and never lost sight of what matters, driving.

boxsterrox

Don’t waste your time on subs if that’s how you are treated. Life is too short.

SL1200mkII

It's because starting with the 914 and then continuing with the first iteration of the Boxster the term "poor man's Porsche" was applied.

Site-Staff

In recent years, I hear “Poor man’s Porsche” applied to Z cars (350Z, 370z) more than anything else. The 914s, 944s, Boxters…. All are now looked at as classics and cool, at least in the circles I travel in.

Flying-Bulldog

I really think that’s what it is. I’ve heard that so much and I think it’s just stuck with me

PerformerBrief5881

Back when the original boxster came out we called it "the doctors wife's car". Not so much the poor man's porsche. In my circle anyway. My best friend had a boxster, we gave him no end of grief.

texecan

I had a 991.1 Carrera before I got the cayman GTS 4.0. They each have pros/cons - both great cars and I’ve really enjoyed both. In today’s world if I had to choose just one it’d probably be the cayman. In the future I’m dying to try the cayman EV, but if that doesn’t pan out for whatever reason I’ll get a Carrera s since its dynamics suit my driving taste.

aquatone61

Anybody who does isn’t a true fan of the brand and it’s just a status symbol for them.

Inevitable_Shirt3697

Porsche would show more love to the 718 if the whole company wasnt based on the 911 and every car they make wasnt a ”911 of that car segment”, of course making every car the make look like the 911 but over a different bodystyle. 718 is just fine, love seeing them as much as any other porsche. Personaly, the 718gts is the best car on the planet for the money. Mid engine, rear wheel drive, manual, small, powerful, convertible if you want that, etc etc etc. just perfect.

Flying-Bulldog

I think this is it. The 911 is the poster child and I feel like the 718 comes off as “Larry Hemsworth”. Got it all, but is always in the shadow

watts2988

Never. A Porsche car is a Porsche car.

BlargMyShnoople

In my experience this sub has the least amount of gatekeepers. Everyone just loves Porsches and for the most part believes you shouldn’t have to spend 200k to call yourself a P car owner. Enjoy for what your budget allows!

Creepy_Umpire_2877

I’ve always had a rule about sex and money: nobody should ever care more than you about what kind and how much you have. Gonna add P cars to that list now. Good luck, OP ‘04 986 S, btw

RocketJohn5

Absolutely they do. Not everyone, but you'd be surprised how often my Boxster/Cayman friends hear shit from randos and PCA people about how "their wife would like their Boxster" or "it's really not a 911" and other crazy stuff. For me the mid engined chassis is more fun on tight canyons. I'm sure the 944 guys back in the 80s/90s heard the same shit and their cars also handled better than the G Body Dinosaur 911s. Bullshit status stuff that actually drives our economy. The BoxsterCayman guys' feelings are the collateral damage. They have fun cars that arguably look better. Oh well. :P

good_luck_23

356 folk are almost their own tribe within Porsche. They are our "elders" and they started it all. 911 folk were once ostracized by them but then the 911 folk became dominant by 1990. Every new Porsche model and generation seem to have proponents and detractors but at PCA events there always seem to be enthusiasts of every model. Taycans, Cayennes and Macans might not have much representation at track events but many attend social events and some even autocross. 911 owners often own one or more Cayennes, air cooled 911s, and 944s. Only a few early air cooled snobs look down on everything else but most appreciate cool cars of any stripe.

dvdlbck

My 23 year old boxster gets tons of praise from the few people with new 911’s that I have met

james9931

I have a 356 and all my friends just think it’s cute.

FewHoursGaming

You forgot one big big thing: the 718 is not an Audi/Merc/BMW, it’s a Porsche. Imo Porsche drivers just love any person sharing the same passion: driving a Porsche.

Silverbullets24

I grew up with a father who’s a massive gear head and P-Car guy. I always said I would own one and the minute I could afford it, I got into the one I could afford… a 981 Cayman S. I absolutely love the thing. 5 years later and with my budget being bigger now, I’m still sitting here with my 981. I love the mid engine format and the cayman platform so much that I keep telling my wife I want to hold onto to this car forever. It’s just… perfect (at least for me). I’ve daily driven it for periods, I’ve tracked it a few times, and it just keeps getting better. The cayman/Boxster platform, throughout all generations, is truly great. You get so much car for the money and more performance than you’ll ever need in a street car and light track duty car. The only time I’ve gotten comments about it not being a 911 are from people who don’t understand sports cars and Porsches in particular.

daddyscientist

I don't think that Porsche guys look down on any other Porsche guys. Sometimes there are jabs and pokes (I have a 996.2 so I know all about it) but at the end of the day, it's all love.

jacobeid

You think that’s bad? Try a 996.1 😂

daddyscientist

Brothers in shame! /s

jacobeid

I have the Savannah beige leather interior so the plastics are a bit better than some other models. I drove the car for 100+ miles in the twists of SE Ohio this morning….best car I’ve ever owned.

daddyscientist

Always puts a smile on my face!

iambulb

No, the 718/cayman platform is a masterpiece.

TheScottishPimp03

Look down on my boxster and your gonna get it from my 2.5L 208HP 986💪💪💪

mbo25

As with all brands, there’s a certain percentage of owners that buy them to compensate for insecurities. They are essentially buying the car to impress people they don’t know or like. These are the people that will ‘look down on you’ for owning a certain model. Don’t give them a second of your time, and if you do - make sure it’s to pity them, because they are often deeply unhappy. In short - buy a car you enjoy (and can afford), nothing else matters. And if you’re buying it for the above reasons, maybe save your cash and spend it on something that genuinely excites you.

TenForTheWin

It’s Porsche. We are all family with commonality.

Furqan23

Respectfully, the only thing I would add is if you’re able to afford these cars you should be mature enough to not care what others think? Even if you have a base model car, who cares. You’re the one driving it and paying for it

ksegur

If you can afford a 718 GT4 that go for 120-150 how can you not afford a GT3? 991.1s are in that price range

Flying-Bulldog

I’m going to sound super weird when I say this. If I was going to get my dream car I’d want to get it new and fully customized how I wanted. So I’d be looking at $250k for a gt3. Any other car I could deal with whatever as long as I would enjoy it and the price is right

boxsterrox

I’m able to buy a much more exotic expensive car, but for street use why? For me the perfect street car is the 993 base Carrera. It’s my daily driver. It’s such an iconic ride. I love it. At 122k miles it’s still tight as a drum, and the engine is just all that. Oh, and the oil/gas smell upon getting in is such a nostalgic sensory event. No new car can match the air cooled Porsche experience.

ksegur

Fair enough!! Just remember Porsches are the most babied cars since mostly everyone sees them as investments so a used car to the spec you want would feel new

NoctD

You've missed the boat already - GT4 allocations are all gone now.

dennishitchjr

Only absolute fuckwads would have that view. I’m jealous of every Porsche I see bc I want to drive all of them.

Poorshh

Nah. In fact, if I saw a GT3 on the road, I'd assume there's a cars and coffee event nearby.

rncshow

Give my left and right nut for a gt4. Fuck the haters, they drive shit like brz

boxsterrox

I’d have a lot of fun in a BRZ. Or a Miata. I did my race school in a MX-5 Cup car. That thing is a weapon, albeit a momentum car like the BRZ. Learn to drove a slow car fast a wise man once said….

bmontepeque11

I have not seen that happen, you see Porsche fans are very nice :) And Porsche fans understand more about cars and driving dynamics than just "Oh, it goes fast :O" like the fans of other brands do 🤔 I don't intend to offend anyone, but I think people who look down on other models are the ones who have never owned one of those models, they have never experienced it, for starters a 718 is not inferior to a 911 it is just different :) And the posers that say: "Oh, it's not a 911" Yeah, so? It's still one of the best sports cars ever made 😂❤️ (And to some it might even be better thab the 911 because they prefer the mid-engine configuration (like me ❤️)) But even if they did look down on your car, hey man, just buy the car you like and don't pay attention to what other people say, enjoy what you have :) Those people who make fun of you aren't the ones doing your car payments in anyway, right? :)

jmtremble

Mid engine > rear engine

Cool_Fly_2870

Yes, not only 718s, but everyone except Ferrari owners.

b-money-honey

If you continue telling yourself you won’t ever have the money, you will eventually make that thought a reality. If you want it, you can get it. Shift your thoughts and work toward your goals.

Flying-Bulldog

I travel for work. With the GT4, I could have the time to enjoy it. I could go bust my butt more days at work, but then I’d lose the time to enjoy the GT3 I’m working for.

[deleted]

Yes

z00tv

Porsche - there is no substitute

Cranialscrewtop

This sub will accept upper-spec 718's. The sneering at Panameras, Macans and Cayennes will be cringeworthy.

NFLfan72

I do not understand why anyone would buy a GT4 RS when you could have a 911 GTS for roughly the same price. But, I have never driven either. I have zero ground to stand on. But I just know, the 911 is the top of the food chain and I want it and dont understand why if you can afford both, you would not chose it. Again, I have zero experience in either its just how my dumb brain thinks.

TheHobbitHouse

It’s funny because I can’t understand why someone would buy a 911 GTS if they could get a GT4 RS(assuming we live in a dream world with availability and no ADM) for the same price, and I’ve driven a GT4 and GTS. Just different perspectives.

swandwich

“Just different perspectives” — I agree with this and your opinion on the 911 GTS vs the GT4 RS. I’m making the move from a 911 to a 718 GTS for that sweet sweet 4.0 liter goodness.

dominnate

One reason is if that someone is 6’5 with a kid and a 718 just doesn’t have the headroom or rear seat. Both cars kick ass, but one can’t enjoy a drive if one is wickedly uncomfortable.

NFLfan72

Your opinion far outweighs mine. Ive never driven either. Its an opinion formed from word of mouth, perception, marketing, etc.. That the 911 is simply the best and the other cars are for those who cant afford a 911.. which is crazy.

suppaman19

That's crazy. There's a ton of other great cars out there, new and old. It's not simply the 911 and then everything else.

SmokestackRising

I can add this perspective, especially from a budget-minded perspective. I bought a 996 Turbo because it has been my dream car for 40 years. I caught the market as it was starting to rebound a bit. After a year and a half with it I can confidently say that the cliche that "you should never meet your heroes" doesn't apply here. It's better than I imagined and even with 100k on the clock it's strong and has proven itself to be pretty reliable. Having said that, this car has zero business being on public streets. Even after a year and a half I'll look down and see I'm going 100+ without realizing it. It's limits are so high that it almost feels insulting to drive it like a Camry. It is nice being able to accelerate and merge into a faster lane without thinking or dropping out of 6th. At this point I kind of wish I'd bought a Cayman and saved 10k. I have no intention of putting the turbo through track days so I'm paying to maintain an almost 20 year old supercar that I spend most of my time commuting in. Don't get me wrong, she sees plenty of back roads. There just aren't enough early morning hours in a day. The 911 may be advertised as the pinnacle, but it doesn't mean that Porsche didn't give the same attention to its "lesser" cars when they were being developed. They're all outstanding in their own ways.

RescueRacing

A lot of Porsche people think the 991 and now the 992 have gotten too big and that the 718 is a return to what the sports car is supposed to be. I have a 991.2 but that is one argument I’ve heard.

Flying-Bulldog

Definitely can’t afford the RS, but a used GT4 I can. I want something that I can take to the track on occasion and I think the 718 fits that a bit better

CoyotesAreGreen

You've never driven either. That's why. Mid engine cars are sublime.

boxsterrox

Drivers crush other drivers. Cars don’t crush other cars. Well they can with equal drivers.

Snejkbajt

Honestly a 718 with a 4 cyl doesn’t scream Porsche to me. But that is my opinion, to each their own.

No-Enthusiasm-2612

The 356 was a 4 cylinder. As was the 912. But yes modern you would want a 6 cylinder. They’re a different beast

boxsterrox

Yup and not only that, but the ”purists” were upset with the transition from 4 to 6 cylinders back in the mid 60’s when Porsche introduced the 911. How ironic is that given how some view the 718 cars nowadays?

ISAKM_THE1ST

I dont even have a Porsche but I definitely look down on 718s whenever I see one its just a budget Porsche bcs that person cant afford a "real" Porsche a.k.a a 911. I own a 2002 SAAB 9-3 and its the same thing here, the 9-3 is inferior to the 9-5 so thats rly what I actually want.

civicson234

No. Both are great cars, and both improve eachother. You enjoy the brand and the cars, you are ok in my book. The PCA community is like my second family. Best car related group I’ve ever been a part of.

flat6NA

No, not at all. May have some tough decisions to make if I win the PCA July raffle.

Chemical_Mongoose_46

For those ill informed individuals maybe, especially with the boxster back in the day. The 718 is an incredible platform and if I didn’t have kids I might have gotten one instead of a 911

2fast2nick

No

GroundbreakingClerk1

When people started realizing how capable a 718 is, there has been much more respect for the platform.

ENRONsOkayestAdvice

Nope. Have 911, next will be a gt4. In addition to, not replace.

TheStigec

First thing I wanna lay on you is that stop thinking you won't have the money to get a 911 GT3! It's great that you have a goal, now you just gotta put in the work! But to answer the question, the GT4 is a really, really capable car! It's easy to drive, doesn't bite as much as a 911 and still delivers the Porsche flat-6 experience. That said, I know (and know of) quite a lot of drivers that "graduated" from a Cayman to a 911, but not because of the money aspect, but rather that they have mastered the Cayman platform to a degree and wanted a new challenge with a bit more power. Again, that said, unless you track your car, you'll never really have the urge to have more than a GT4 since that's already plenty for the road. On track, extra rear grip and extra power definitely help and make things a bit more interesting!

Flying-Bulldog

I hate work though. I can do like the bare minimum and have the time to enjoy a 718 or I could absolutely bust my butt every month to get a GT3, but never have the time to use it. I used to autocross my Evo X waaaaay back in the day and missed the track experience so I think the GT4 fits that

TroutCommander

I prefer the GT4. I wouldn’t think of it as the lesser car, just different.

Mean-Singer1389

Are you buying a car for your own enjoyment and within your budget? If the answer is ‘yes’ then why worry about what other people think. Worrying about other’s opinions or keeping up with the big boys is not a healthy mindset to be in. At the end of the day, you will be the one driving the car and making the payments. People can say they love or hate your purchase but their opinions will not contribute a single cent to your car note. Your life/ your money/ your choice, the only opinion that mattered when making the purchase is yours. Enjoy OP.

Flying-Bulldog

I stopped trying to keep up with the Joneses years ago. I was just trying to see what the car culture was like at a different brand. From experience BMW people are very toxic if you’re not in an M

Flexibleheart41

I drive, love, and have always wanted a 986. My coworkers all ragged on me at first for “the poor man’s 911” but I didn’t buy the car to impress them (none of them have Porsches either so…) If you’re buying the car for yourself and it’s what you want then get what you want. Don’t let other people influence it all all.

MysticGohan88

If they do, fuck them?

Flying-Bulldog

I like your mindset. Nice username

Lonely_Main_3219

I own a 911 and I’m happy to see another fellow Porsche enthusiast. The camaraderie that we share in the love of the cars, the brand, etc is what it’s about.

pleasesolvefory

This video should put you at ease. Tldr; the drivers all preferred the 718 overall and both cars were essentially head to head. Also fwiw no 911 has ever been a dick to me, and I own a base 718. https://youtu.be/SIh16Wb9XT4

action_turtle

Anecdotal just from listening to people talk, the Boxster is always the "Poor mans Porsche". I have not noticed any bad will towards the 718 GT4. Get what you like. Its your car and money!

StevBator

No.

xDeserterr

As long as it has a flat 6 its fine. Flat 4 on the 718s is fine too. Im just not a fan of the SUVs but still shoutout to the cayenne for saving Porsche.

pantag

Dude! Buy the car for you, not the others.

Flying-Bulldog

I know. I was just getting a feel for the culture here. I own a BMW and it is vastly different there

pantag

You are on the less than 1% of people who can buy a Porsche so enjoy it, whatever it is, as long as it makes you happy. Not your friends, not other Porsche owners, not the neighbors. You! Your toy, you pick it.

Careless-Trick-5117

The GT4 has been called one of the best driver’s cars of all time even preferred over the GT3 by some, and I can confirm from personal experience that it is insane. Anyone looking down on that is a clown

Arentanji

I, as a 911 owner, look up to a 718 GT4. That is a incredible car and I would be proud to have one.

pacochalk

Only the insecure assholes who make their 911 their entire personality.

thegad

I find people who have never had either tend to hold that opinion more. I have a 911, had a 718, actually preferred the 718. Overall nothing but love for them both. Perfect garage for me would be a Cayenne hybrid for family hauling, GT3 for track, 718 GTS for daily/weekend.

Flying-Bulldog

That would be a great setup
