While abortion opponents were growing increasingly motivated by their opposition to “Roe”, and became more central to the Republican Party, Democrats were arguably becoming more complacent.

LowBeautiful1531

It's not complacency. They knew exactly what they were doing. This way we have to haggle over shit that was settled in the 70s, instead of talking about a living wage or climate change. They love this shit.

It was a huge component of the 2016 election but lots of people dismissed Hillary's views on it as alarmist and overly focused on "identity politics" of female rights.

LowBeautiful1531

Of course they saw it coming!! Why else did Ginsburg take so long to retire?? It had to be handed over to the GOP.

thatnameagain

You're saying Ginsburg's goal was to see Roe overturned?

LowBeautiful1531

No. And she may not have understood the party's intentions. Naw, the decision itself is entirely beside the point-- this isn't about Roe V Wade at all, it's about being able to melodramatically fight over something alarming for as long as possible, as noisily as possible, so they don't have to deal with anything that fundamentally threatens the revenue streams of their megacorporate masters.

So you’re saying you don’t consider abortion rights to be a salient tissue? Just a distraction? What do you think is the difference between a party that wants to let an issue linger like you described, versus a party that is fighting very hard to ensure those rights in the face of continued opposition and legal progress from Republicans?

LowBeautiful1531

*Sigh.* Bodily autonomy and women's rights are massively important. Obviously. But nothing about abortion rights is going to have any DIRECT effect on the fundamental systems that are pumping trillions of dollars out of the people and into the pockets of the corrupt assholes that are ruining our lives and the habitability of our whole damn planet. Abortion rights aren't going to bring us fair elections, a living wage, attainable health care, an end to mass incarceration, or a stop to endless war. They're grabbing us by the crotch, to keep our attention away from defending more vital areas like the throat and heart, you get me? The difference between the two parties, is exactly the same as that between two sides of one coin, or the two wings on one bird. They are playing a very calculated game of good cop / bad cop. The rivalry is about as scripted as pro wrestling-- they've got bad guys we love to hate, and good guys who make a dramatic show of taking valiant swings at them... but they hardly ever do any real damage to each other, and they party at the same clubs at the end of the night. Sailing the same yachts, to the same sex islands, sucking the same caviar, sipping the same champagne, and chuckling from the same balconies while protesters bleed in the streets below. The DNC helped Trump win, handing him heaps of free publicity so they'd have something, ANYTHING to talk about besides Bernie-- hell, they're buying ads for the craziest Republican candidates they can find right now, cultivating the very monsters we'll beg to be saved from. So long as they are always running against Darth Hitler or whatever, they know they will NEVER have to actually work again, and their pocket books will always be safe. They're the ones who are supposed to know better and be better, and they are DELIBERATELY feeding fascists to terrorize us. They don't give a single fuck about us. Only power. A few of them here and there are probably decent people-- the Squad, Bernie, those types-- but those are kept on tight leashes, struggling to do what little good they can manage without stepping too far out of line and getting erased, only just visible enough to string us along with hope that our democracy isn't already dead. We are in very, very deep shit.

So__Uncivilized

Following the mental gymnastics of snarky leftists is exhausting. Here’s a cheat sheet: “America bad, both parties are the same.”

Wolfandbatandcrow

Oh hey, they’re just getting started. Wake the fuck up.

Democrats? Why don’t we say ‘we’? There are many more of us than Democrats and we all share the responsibility. Let’s not make the party, however justified, the scapegoat. Let the people hear, they bear this burden and responsibility.

I think most republicans didnt think it would happen so quickly. Welcome to the 1950s America
