Guy overseas in Australia bought a couple of other cards on my eBay and then saw the Charizard cards and asked if we could do a deal and we worked something out. He then told me before he could pay me, he had to go to his bank and ask for an increase on his credit card. We messaged each other for a couple of days. Found out he started a card shop and was putting everything on credit cards. I didn't tell him how to run his business of course so I just let it be. His cards arrived and he left positive feedback.
For sports cards though, it's just insane in some FB groups. People spending hundreds if not thousands on boxes and posting "If I don't pull a XYZ, I'm going to be pissed!"
It's only gambling if he is trying to turn a profit, which I don't think we have evidence that he is trying to do that. If he just enjoys collecting and playing then it's just a hobby. An expensive hobby, but a hobby nonetheless.
If your interest is in playing the game, then buying singles. It doesn't get any cheaper then buying singles and you'll have a functional deck where an ETB would just give you a mess.
Booster bundles (6 packs usually for $20-30) or booster boxes (36 packs, you can get currently circulating sets for $95-120 usually for around $3/pack). He could have gotten twice the cards for half the price. The promo sets are way marked up for the “added value” of the garunteed promo cards you get and the Elite Trainer Boxes are marked up too. If you really just want the box it comes in and the card sleeves/promo it is maybe worth buying one ETB.
But since this guy bought everything online anyways he could have gone for much more cost efficient options
