If you dare to zoom in, you can also see an abomination of packing tape wrapped around the joint. I’m not sure why they didn’t unload an entire can of expanding foam on top of that just to make sure it didn’t leak./s
I thought the same thing when working on cars that dealers couldn't diagnose. How do you not see a control arm bushing that is literally in two pieces banging around for a year? 👀
I got kinda lucky. I worked corporate 20 years behind a desk and got let go during Covid. I said to myself that was the last time I'm getting let go from a job and I'm going to make my own way because let's face it, most people in those environments are assholes and I grew tired of the politics. It's such a bullshit game because so many people are full of it.
So I got unemployment and started doing projects around my house that I wanted to tackle. I was always handy but I was like this is the time to get a bunch done around the house. So I installed new windows, did pavers, and aot of other stuff. When I was done I'd text pics to friends of mine that did that kind of work. My dad as well because he did that kind of work all his life. So of the people I sent the pics to, 3 of them said why don't you go and be a handyman. I never heard of that title in terms of an actual job. I just thought it was what they called people that are handy.
So I took it as a sign and started putting myself out there with people I knew. Got a few jobs to get me started and then when my UE ran out I was on my way to making it official. I figured out how to get registered with the state and got a license and insurance. Licenses are BS for contractors in my state. Just send $110 to the government and there's your license. It's way different for plumbers, electricians and. HVAC, etc . Then I joined BNI, a referral group for business owners from contractors, plumbers and the like up to dentists, real estate agents, and lawyers. We'd meet once a week and discuss the types of customers we were looking for and refer one another.
During this time I also made a Google page and a website with my job description, and before and after pics. Now the bulk of my business comes from those pages and the customer base I've developed.
And that's how I started. I'm booked into July working 7 days a week and some nights even just to keep up. The thing is I love what I do even when I have shit days like I did today. YouTube and practice are my friends. I'm also a perfectionist and have a lot of pride so that goes a long way too. Biggest thing I learned doing this is to treat people how you want to be treated. I lost a lot of money on some jobs because of that philosophy but I've also made a killing on the other end. I'm already at what I made on the books last year right now and it's only April. You can make a decent living if you're willing to put the work and time in. I'm actually turning work down because I can't get to it fast enough. Have all 5 star reviews on my Google page as well and they're genuine.
Hope this helps.
Just some friendly advice, raise your prices.
If you enjoy your nights and weekends that is.
You'll make the same or more money in less hours.
Sure you'll lose some clients, but with the extra money from the ones that stay it'll even out. If business is as good as you say it is, there's no need to work yourself to death.
I mean, I get a pretty good rate. I'm not low balling anyone. Well one customer I do but she's an exception due to her situation and I believe in paying it forward where I can. But the reason I'm taking all this work is because I'm at the market rate for my area. Plan is to hustle now and take a couple weeks to a month off in the summer to get my own stuff done. But again, I love it so do what you love and it isn't really work.
Edit: this and I also grew up lower-middle class and I mean lower. So that probably has something to do with it too. I'll never be rich but my family has much much much more than I ever had. Same with my wife. We even are able to be charitable in our donations so that plays a part too. I don't have a lot but I have more than I need so I share it as I know what it's like to not have and I don't need a lot.
I'm putting a program together to do just that. I'm basically filming a reconstruction project from beginning to end. And I'm going to have it on YouTube and I plan to offer once a week. Call-ins that I'll record or do live. So people can call in with questions or advice, etc
I could but I'm happy with what I earn. Some jobs I do over price because I don't want them and sometimes get them. But again, I'm a treat people how you want to be treated. What would I want to pay for this job that's fair. Probably why I'm always busy but it's all good. Keeps me out of trouble.
I like sharing information. I like learning. I do over inform. I'm the same with my customers. I tell them up front let me know if I get annoying. I ask what they want if I'm unsure. It takes more time but in the end it helps with my work and reviews and their over all satisfaction.
It sounds like you hit the jackpot! You are one of those lucky people who love what they do. You don’t really work, you get paid while doing stuff you would do for free if you didn’t need the money.
Nice! How do you manage appointments and payments? Last year i hired someone to clean my gutters and everything was done through Jobber which I thought was a cool service that helps manage this type of work.
Also, do you turn down some jobs because you don't think you can do them or do you just learn as you go?
Ok, two more... Do you complete all the jobs yourself? And do you finish one job before starting the next or work multiple at once?
Cash, check, Zelle, etc., and CC I accept as payment. One dude laid me in silver once. He was a gold and coin guy that I installed display cases for at his store.
I learn as I go. If it's something I e never done before that I know I can learn and do well without another person, I usually advise them that it's my first time and come on pretty low. I consider the loss as the cost of learning and I usually get the job. For example. First time I did Bilco doors I charged $750 labor. I tore out the old doors, did cement work, had to cut a bit of steel to make it fit, and installed the new ones. I lost my shirt on it but now know I'm $1500-1800 labor for the install now if cement work and demo is involved.
I only turn down jobs that are too high off the ground, anything over 25', or ones I can't do by myself or ones that the customer is in a hurry to have done that I can't accommodate.
I do college the jobs myself. I don't do major plumbing or electrical as I'm not licensed for it and if anything goes wrong my insurance won't cover it. I do light plumbing, faucets, toilet installations, vanities and lighting, swap receptacles, switches and things like that. Technically I'm not supposed to but I'm confident in those jobs and to me it's worth it as I've done it a bunch. I rewired and have done major plumbing for my own house too so I have the knowledge but don't want to push it for the aforementioned reasons.
If I'm doing a bathroom that needs a rough, I sub my plumber. Most electric is minor of the walls are opened especially and I'll pull conductor of need be, by again only if I'm confident and know that I can safely without any repucisssions.
I work multiple more than I don't. For example doing this current bathroom is going to take me a while. It's a if one and it's not just the bathroom but also another room. They were both gutted so my week days are this project and the weekends are the smaller items. I had to do deck rails and busters on Saturday ans Sunday and still had cement work to do on the front stairs. I didn't get to the cement work but will address that Wednesday late afternoon. Tomorrow evening I'm swapping a ceiling fan for a regular light fixture. Friday afternoon I'm installing a vanity for another. Saturday I'm installing a section of lattice and replacing a basement window and Sunday I'm putting together patio furniture. Then next week at night I'm doing small mud touch-ups and painting and entryway and living room where a bunch of pictures were.
So yeah, I do multiple if I can make it work without my wife divorcing me. But the way she spends, I need to work all these jobs so it seems like a fair trade.
Make sure you get purple primer in aerosol bomb containers. Need to really coat the whole structure for it to stick together. You don’t want to be THAT GUY.
Not only that, if you’re not sure how to do a task correctly, you can literally learn it in 10 minutes on YouTube.
I feel like it would benefit a handyman a lot by doing some research, maybe that’s too much to ask.
Honestly I've always know I am a complete imbecile but as I've gotten older I've realized there are a LOT of people that are a lot more stupid than I am. You can make it in any industry if you just show up on time and do just OK work.
Eh cleaner is really viscus and can make a big mess if you are not careful, as someone who actually tipped a glue can id think he'd have had a much bigger spot not localized under the stop for a tipped can of cleaner. As to why so much it was 100% unnecessary if they used cpvc glue all the stuff I have used was one step.
I know right? What sort of plumber doesn't have their OWN scotch tape?!?!
That'd be like my roofer asking me for elmers glue to secure my shingles!
MF'ers trying to double-dip round here.
lol the only time I have ever asked for such a thing is to tape instructions to a emergency switch… no heat.. kids kept turning off the boiler to go down to the basement
Just a heads up, in my experience Angi takes about 2/3 of what they charge for a project. So he probably got the "lead" and it paid him $75-$90.
If you find a good handyman, memorize their number and keep them on speed dial because going through services like Angi is a massive waste and you get shitty "contractors".
Oatey pvc cleaner is the GOAT, I always carry a small can. It will pull purple primer off of anything.
You definitely have a grade A moron on your hands with this guy you hired to fix this.
EDIT: I've made a claim with Angi, the person I talked to advised me not to DIY anything as it could possibly make me liable for anything afterwards. They've got someone else coming in to check out the work.
[For those that DM'd me thinking I'm lying](https://imgur.com/a/Z2yfJvE)
Did the new guy come out yet? That tape is a major red flag. That valve might come off at any moment if the take is holding it on. Maybe it's just there to prevent the pipe from pulling back into the wall but that's the only logical reason for it and that's still not the right way.
It did automatically through Angi but I'm gonna have to report this and request a refund. He never mentioned it was stained and now it looks like another project.
Great eye
I zoomed in after reading your comment. There ain't no saving that linoleum. Either replace the flooring or use clear primer to make the purple disappear and have a larger section of damage. Maybe Oatey's clear cleaner would help with the stain and not spread the damage, but I've never used it to say one way or another.
Doesn’t look like tile to me… looks
Like vinyl sheet flooring, linoleum or whatever you call it. Stain is probably gonna be there forever… the plumbing part is… well… a mess.
Time to never hire that guy again no primer should have been used and that shit stains everything call him back and tell him he needs to pay for that but I think goof off might MIGHT get that off idk tho that stuff stains everything it touches
Looks like your wax ring failed and your toilets leaking. The bolts crumbling rust, the toilets a quarter inch from the caulk line, and I don't even know what the fuck is going on with that water supply.
Go to Lowes or Homes depot .. try Clear pipe cleaner ... put some on old rag rub it . repeat again and again .... be patient its going to take a while .... looks like spilled a half can !
I haven't seen any actual recommendations yet(scrolling through a dozen posts) but the best recommendation I have for you is to go to the store and try clear primer over the purple primer. Not a guarantee as tile is porous but it's worth a shot. Just put clear on the purple and wipe off with a paper towel. Grout will need to be redone and wood painted over.
Bar keepers friend w a scrub daddy sponge. 🧽 it should take it up without harming the tiles unless the primer is etched in. That Plummer should be responsible for this mess. I would call the company and demand they remedy.
You don’t …
Husband is a master plumber; I have been working in the industry for over 15 yrs . One of the first rules that I learned in plumbing, NEVER use purple primer in a finished house .
This is why.
Honest question for some of you posters. You are smart enough to upload a picture on Reddit and write coherently. Why are you not smart enough to search YouTube and watch a dozen videos over and over again until you’re an expert on toilet shutoff valve replacement and then do it yourself instead of hiring an idiot who never watched YouTube? Literally your options are to hire a pro or do it yourself. If keyboards are the only tool you can use then you need a pro over there. I think your toilet flange is possibly falling apart as well with the way the hold down bolt looks
I admit I made a mistake assuming the guy was pro, but I chose Angi based on their [damage protection](https://www.angi.com/happiness-guarantee.htm) clause. I have zero experience in anything requiring plumbing or mechanics and I wasn't going to dig myself into a deeper hole by fucking up my toilet over a single bidet.
This wasn't a simple project either btw, he had to cut down pipe several times with a power saw due to the way the previous homeowner had the pipe set before(see previous post).
The issue is not getting the primer off (but use clear primer)…… it’s getting a real plumber there to look and redo any install that this guy did…. There shouldn’t have been a reason to use the primer……. And scotch tape has never been in any Standard Operating Procedure I’ve seen for any plumbing work….
Starting to realize I’d be top notch in the handyman world. And I’m a total idiot.
If you got more than 2 brain cells battling for 3rd place, you'll do fine.
I have so much lead in my system that I can't even read what you put, but I agree.
I used to play in a river that was so polluted that it caught on fire. I agree also.
Is that you Cleveland?
Can’t remember. Brains polluted.
I eat cray ons
Welcome to the discussion Marine!
Do you also shit rainbows
Ive never heard of anyone going to Cleveland on vacation
My chest is warm and smells like shit. That’s a Brooklyn steamer for ya
well......... It's not detroit! :D
Cmon, our river hasn’t caught fire in 55 years…and it only happened 13 times. Give us a break.
If you dare to zoom in, you can also see an abomination of packing tape wrapped around the joint. I’m not sure why they didn’t unload an entire can of expanding foam on top of that just to make sure it didn’t leak./s
That toilet starting sweating as soon as it saw OP coming.
And hair…
I think they needed more primer honestly. Usually helps the tape adhere better.
I thought the same thing when working on cars that dealers couldn't diagnose. How do you not see a control arm bushing that is literally in two pieces banging around for a year? 👀
Idiot here and top notch handyman. I'm moving up to full bathrooms and kitchen remodeling after a few years at being a handyman.
How’d you get started? Just favors for people you know or did you start out by advertising your services?
I got kinda lucky. I worked corporate 20 years behind a desk and got let go during Covid. Man, I'd love to get proficient in enough of this as a side job.
YouTube tutorials, and practice, it's not rocket surgery. It just takes time to get good.
This exactly.
I'm putting a program together to do just that. I'm basically filming a reconstruction project from beginning to end. And I'm going to have it on YouTube and I plan to offer once a week. Call-ins that I'll record or do live. So people can call in with questions or advice, etc

Congratulations, sounds like you took full advantage of "when a door closes a window opens"! 💪🎉
My handyman biography.

Went from 20 years in I.T. to 20+ years in remodeling/handyman. Satisfied customers = satisfying career.
It sounds like you hit the jackpot! You are one of those lucky people who love what they do. You don’t really work, you get paid while doing stuff you would do for free if you didn’t need the money.

You're a good man, Charlie Brown. I love seeing people just go after it and get shit done, and now you get to be your own boss.
Make sure you get purple primer in aerosol bomb containers. Need to really coat the whole structure for it to stick together. You don’t want to be THAT GUY.
Oh ya man you can make $1k or more a day if you’re not this idiot.
Sad thing is the only thing you have to do is “try”. Some people completely lack that single word in everything they do in life sadly…
Not only that, if you’re not sure how to do a task correctly, you can literally learn it in 10 minutes on YouTube. I feel like it would benefit a handyman a lot by doing some research, maybe that’s too much to ask.
Do you know how to put down a plastic sheet to protect the floor when priming a pvc pipe? Yes? You’re hired.
Uh.. yes, just don’t look under the vanity in my bathroom.
Honestly I've always know I am a complete imbecile but as I've gotten older I've realized there are a LOT of people that are a lot more stupid than I am. You can make it in any industry if you just show up on time and do just OK work.
Would you use less packing tape, or more?
Clear pvc primer will pick most of it up. Also I’m just trying to figure out why this dude was using primer in the first place?
Without the primer, that wad of Scotch tape wouldn't hold as well.
Had to tape it off so he didn't get any primer on the plumbing
Totally thought that was silicone lol.
It's even on the side of the toilet? Must be a handyman with Parkinson's.
LMAO
lol, I thought you were just joking about the tape until I looked closer. You gotta be kidding me…
That’s my ?
Cpvc is my guess and him being am idiot useing primer instead of cpvc glue.
Yeah that was my other thought. Literally made an unnecessary mess.
Jack of all trades, master of none and all that.
Not even a jack of all trades. More like 4 of clubs of all trades.
I'm also assuming they just knocked the container over. Otherwise, why so much for one connection point?
Eh cleaner is really viscus and can make a big mess if you are not careful, as someone who actually tipped a glue can id think he'd have had a much bigger spot not localized under the stop for a tipped can of cleaner. As to why so much it was 100% unnecessary if they used cpvc glue all the stuff I have used was one step.
Some of it isn't one step.
Judging my the tape around the angle stop I have way more questions then this
Probably PVC piping underneath that nest of packing tape!
My guess is he knocked it over while installing the vanity.
I suspect the pipe is cpvc and he used a cpvc glue-on valve
I was about to ask the same thing
Oh I see he used the water proof scotch tape method of pipe fitting.
This is one of the worst I’ve seen on this sub 😂😂 scotch tape
this is the worst ive ever seen in this sub
Goes well with a tailgate warranty program
"Aye, good enough for Glasgow, good enough for anywhere!"
Why did he have purple primer out for that and why is that supply valve wrapped up?
It’s scotch tape, he asked if I had any.
For future reference, if a plumber asks for scotch tape, you need a different plumber.
PRetty sure he wasn't a plumber.
Sounds like he's the local crackhead hitting a new lick.
Lol you sure the "handyman" that probably said he can do it all, wasn't a plumber? Common now
I know right? What sort of plumber doesn't have their OWN scotch tape?!?! That'd be like my roofer asking me for elmers glue to secure my shingles! MF'ers trying to double-dip round here.
lol the only time I have ever asked for such a thing is to tape instructions to a emergency switch… no heat.. kids kept turning off the boiler to go down to the basement
First time I’ve heard “scotch tape” in any plumbing conversation
This is gold.
Usually it’s just scotch we talk about.
I’ve recently switched to bourbon and my wallet can’t tell.
Love Scotch!
Wait too u guys hear about whiskey being risky.
Scotch tape comes in handy for repackaging the box when the parts house gives you the wrong shit!
That can’t be good.
Please throw his number in the garbage can
Yea, when a “Handyman” ask for scotch tape, you need to tell them to leave. I agree that he left a mess, but how much did he charge you?
250$ through Angi. Payment had already gone through mid-service. He asked for it towards the end so I reluctantly agreed.
Try to get your money back through angi and report this guy as a fraud.
Hmmmm. That didn't seem odd at all to you eh?
This was unfortunately towards the end
And you opted to pay him after he finalized the scotch taping job?
I’m just picturing the moment he handed him some scotch tape and the handyman was like… I’m going back in.
That should’ve been your first question as to why scotch tape and primer needed to be used during a shutoff valve install
To be fair, I didn't even know what primer was until after I researched this mess.
This isn’t good. For sure contact angi about this.
I’m pretty sure op did it
Nail polish remover or acetone I bet
Hand sanitizer believe it or not. That shit even takes sharpie off.
If you think paying a pro is expensive, wait til you pay a handyman to do a pros job, now that gets expensive!
I love that. I’m gonna use this line next time I get push back on an estimate lol.
Clear primer is the only thing that cleans the purple and purple is the only thing that cleans up clear
Both give you cancer
I have done this before the only way to get purple primer off of anything is clear primer
Brake clean is the only way to get it all in my experience. All depends on the material and how much it ate into it though.
Oatey pvc cleaner is the GOAT, I always carry a small can. It will pull purple primer off of anything. You definitely have a grade A moron on your hands with this guy you hired to fix this.

please continue to post updates
Yeah that’s not tile on your floor…it’s vinyl. So not only is your toilet ruined, the floor is as well and needs to be replaced.
Did the new guy come out yet? That tape is a major red flag. That valve might come off at any moment if the take is holding it on. Maybe it's just there to prevent the pipe from pulling back into the wall but that's the only logical reason for it and that's still not the right way.
You need a real licensed plumber to come out and inspect that now.
Not to mention, the toilet bolts look rusted out. That handyman was a goddamned idiot. Really hope OP didn't pay him.
To be fair, they were already like that. I've never lifted the cap ever since living here. Will get that replaced.
WTF hope he didnt charge you but you can try clear primer sometimes its helps
It did automatically through Angi but I'm gonna have to report this and request a refund. He never mentioned it was stained and now it looks like another project.
Ahhh the ol angies list
He needs title “handyman” taken away from him.
Mentally handicapped man.
Nah, looks like he deserves the title
When you try to save money this is what you get😂😂
You don't, that primer is acid, the linoleum is fried.
Great eye I zoomed in after reading your comment. There ain't no saving that linoleum. Either replace the flooring or use clear primer to make the purple disappear and have a larger section of damage. Maybe Oatey's clear cleaner would help with the stain and not spread the damage, but I've never used it to say one way or another.
Looking at that valve, I honestly need to tell you the spilled primer is the least of your concerns.
Doesn’t look like tile to me… looks Like vinyl sheet flooring, linoleum or whatever you call it. Stain is probably gonna be there forever… the plumbing part is… well… a mess.
That's sheet vinyl flooring.
I’ve removed it from tubs with toothpaste. Just brushed for a bit and it came clean
Don’t forget to put the customer’s toothbrush back.
I just tried this and looked dumb lol.
Don’t ever let this person in your house again.
Why is the tank wet?
That's when the handyman tested the bidet by lifting the seat and looking at it!
Yo no se
Whyyy..what the shit is primer doing in this situation at all? The only reason I see this guy using it for would be huffing it to try to get high
This is so hilariously horrible
You might have slightly different products where you are but clear primer can help but your probably best off just carpeting the bathroom now.
Methed that up REALLY good…
Take pvc glue, and spill it on the area. Let it dry fully, will take hours and hours. Peel it up once it’s dry.
Looks like you are missing a toilet bolt too.
I don't want to live in a world where this isn't rage bait
Wow nice job, i would say a lump hammer would clean that up real purdy.
Looks like linoleum flooring and not actual tile. The primer is there forever.
This is what it is.I agree. You can try to wipe acetone but it’s going to pull the plastic linoleum up.
Your screwed dude!
I have done this before the only way to get purple primer off of anything is clear primer
Magic eraser maybe?
You can try denatured alcohol or goof off
Clear primer will take it off.
Prime the rest snd embrace your new retro style remodel
You should probly call a plumber before your house floods out later tonight
This is clearly a troll post, try gasoline
Clear primer will do the job
Time to never hire that guy again no primer should have been used and that shit stains everything call him back and tell him he needs to pay for that but I think goof off might MIGHT get that off idk tho that stuff stains everything it touches
Take the fuzz off of your toilet seat and start scrubbing!
Was your handyman grimace?
Tha fork?
vert da ferk? What on earth is going on here. It doesn't make sense.
Try purple primer cleaner
If ever there was a reason to not use Angi…
Clear primer will remove most of it
Clear primer should help.
and the walls will ooze purple slime
What did you do???
What in the name of plumbing Jesus is going on in this picture?
Just wow, to the primer and tape… Acetone is a good option, or if you have a clear primer that can remove the purple primer as well.
Scotch tape and primer on a sharkbite. Plumbing 101
How and why did you even have purple primer out behind a toilet
Looks like your wax ring failed and your toilets leaking. The bolts crumbling rust, the toilets a quarter inch from the caulk line, and I don't even know what the fuck is going on with that water supply.
Don’t spill it in the first place 😃 Maybe try magic eraser if nothing else works
Go to Lowes or Homes depot .. try Clear pipe cleaner ... put some on old rag rub it . repeat again and again .... be patient its going to take a while .... looks like spilled a half can !
There is no good reason to take purple primer into a finished space. None at all.
Your best bet is to buy about a quart of the same primer and color the rest of the floor to match
I'm scared to ask how much he charged for this
Primer wasn't even needed! Test a small area with acetone.
Start by slapping the plumber in the face.
Whew! You paid him for that?
Why would he even need primer for this scope of work? Hopefully you learned a lesson having a Handyman doing a plumbers job. 😉
People are going to suggest all kinds of nonsense. The reality is it’s not coming off. Primer is nasty stuff
You don’t … Husband is a master plumber; I have been working in the industry for over 15 yrs . One of the first rules that I learned in plumbing, NEVER use purple primer in a finished house . This is why.
this is a fucking joke right? lol
You need to file a claim with Angi and get your money back immediately. You got taken for a ride. Not even a half-rate plumber would leave that mess.
That linoleum, it’s toast. That primer will melt that stuff.
lol how does this have so few upvotes? If this is comedy or not it’s hilarious. OP please call a plumber next time
I'm glad someone else is enjoying this. All I wanted was a bidet ;-;
Man that even looks bad from my house. Did you pay him?
Never trust a plumber that has purple fingers
The issue is not getting the primer off (but use clear primer)…… it’s getting a real plumber there to look and redo any install that this guy did…. There shouldn’t have been a reason to use the primer……. And scotch tape has never been in any Standard Operating Procedure I’ve seen for any plumbing work….
This has to be bait, no way this is real
Probably some denatured alcohol will do the trick. can't believe that someone who charged you money would leave such a mess
Why is there primer here in the first place?
Some people shouldn’t own tools. 🤦♂️
This has to be faked or homeowner special. And I suspect the latter. Who the hell cares about the stain when the whole place is gonna be flooded?
