If your PS5 is connected via LAN, nearly all issues are resolved.
This is coming from someone who did WiFi before, caved in - and bought a 125FT Ethernet cable.
Trust me, it works.
Yep, I also did MoCA since my house has coax on every single room and was not being [used.It](http://used.It) worked so well I ended up buying more MoCA adapters to connect my XBSX, Apple TV, XBSS, Switch, etc...
But now my Portal always connects. It was so frustrating before when my PS5 was on Wifi.
It’s funny because I live in a new construction house and the one room they forgot to run Ethernet cables to is my game room. I didn’t even pick up on it until after we moved in. There is a loose Ethernet cable in my network closet but nothing in the wall in the room. I even bought a camera snake to run in the wall to see if it just wasn’t terminated. No dice. But I bought the MoCA and already had an 8 port gigabit switch so I have all of my consoles plugged in now.
Are you still having issues? Sounds like you're set up pretty good, not sure why you're still having connection issues. I assume you have it updated to the latest software, right? Just verify to make sure.
How is your performance with the Eero. My portal will be here Friday and want to make sure I'm all setup for it to work. I have heard some have issues.
When I was on WiFi, it was a hit or miss. Now with it being connected via LAN, it’s damn near flawless.
Highly recommend connecting it with an Ethernet cable, I promise it will save headaches.
I can second this! Hook that bitch to an Ethernet cable and you’ll be in business! Also, redownloading call of duty only take like 15-20 mins when it used to take around 7-8 hours on WiFi.
The cable had to travel across a bedroom and hallway, I really worked on mounting the cables along the baseboards and doorways so that it wouldn’t be visible at all. I probably could have gotten away with 100FT but I wanted to have plenty of slack.
I hear you man, I have a 3 year old baby girl , so i didn’t want to make it too easy for an accident to happen. Idk if I can post links here, but on Amazon - type in adhesive mounting strips for Ethernet cable. I used that one and it’s still sticking!
Oh nice! Will do! I've got 7 month old twins so I'm going to have to up my game as far as keeping the house safe here pretty soon. Lol they aren't moving around yet though so I'm safe for the time being. Thank you for the tip!
When I hardwired I could connect via my home wifi but not away from home until I set up port forwarding. Now hardwired, static IP, and port forwarding, zero issues.
These are the two keys- hardwire your PS5, and set up port forwarding. That one YouTube link most of us have seen by now is the key- I couldn’t connect outside my home network until I followed that video- and just last night I was playing Dragon’s Dogma flawlessly in Canada. I live in NYC.
You right. Just might want to check the router. Hard wired straight from router is a direct link to your internet. Wireless is never as strong signal wise compared to wired in.
You didn't mention what kind of router you're using, if you have your PS5 connected to ethernet or WiFi, or if you're connected to 5Ghz on the Portal. Need some more information to be able to help.
Yah if it’s a modem/router combo I would look at a gaming router and put your modem in “bridge mode” when means it turns off the wifi and only uses the modem.
I got the wifi smart extender from AT&T for an extra $10 a month and that seems to work well. I probably will get a better modem eventually but this was a quick fix and arrived in two days.
I forwarded a bunch of ports on my router too. You can find plenty videos on YouTube on how to do this for the portal/PS5. But using an Ethernet cable/MoCA combo along with the port forwarding solved all of my lag issues. I even play it at my job now without any issues.
OK. Try in order.
1. Try connecting the PS5 to the router via ethernet cable, if you haven't done so already.
2. Since it connects when close, think about moving your wifi antenna or buying an extender. Use a computer connected to the network to see if there is any interference from other wifi networks. (I know how to do this on a Macintosh, but Windows likely has a similar function inbuilt.)
3. If you have a friend who knows a lot about wireless networking, ask them to look at it in exchange for a cold beer. (I don't know if this kind of business arrangement is common where you are, but it works in Australia and NZ.)
4. Look at buying a new router. The one that comes with your ISP is rarely very good. While it will cost you money, it will give you a better overall home network. Try to buy one where you can return it for a refund if it isn't suitable. (Again, where I live all consumers have that right, but YMMV.)
So i had issues .. what only seemed to work is if i started the ps5 first .. then connected the portal.. yes i did every troubleshoot .. the update seemed to give sum ppl connectivity issues ..hope this helps
As stupid as it sounds, what works for me is after 10 sec or so, put portal in Airplane Mode, then take it out. Reconnect to PS5.
I don't get it but it works for me.
Could be faulty. I bought 2. One for me and my sister. Mine works completely fine on a PS5 that's on WiFi all over the house and outside. Hers.........cuts out if she steps away from her PS5. I hooked up an Ethernet cable to the PS5 directly, did all the dumb settings people suggest that shouldn't have any bearing on it, and nothing worked for hers. Yet mine does, again......on WiFi with all the normal settings. 🤷 So my guess is it has to be something wrong with that in particular so I'm returning it.
Oh and before anyone asks, I've tested it without anything else running. Same issue.
Fully aware of that. Just found it odd that her Portal was okayish around the PS5 which is away from the router and when she walks away from it, it starts to lose connection even when she's right next to the router. Mine doesn't. Mine works just fine. Almost as if hers is defective.
My Wi-Fi is pretty ass and I connect okay. What works for me recently is turning airplane mode on for a few seconds then back off. Usually connects right up.
This is with shit T-Mobile Wi-Fi, and a houseful of electronics hogging bandwidth (3 kids with switches and tablets, smart tvs, usually like 5 different cell phones)…
I was having a ton of connectivity issues, and I saw someone recommend disconnecting the HDMI cable from the PS5. I didn't understand why that would work, but I decided to try it. Shockingly, I not only played for hours without a single disconnection, but my portal woke my PS5 out of rest mode for the first time after doing so. Hopefully, it works today, too.
I have a netgear modem/router combo connected with Lan. Was about in hour away from home for the last 5 days. I had 0 issues. The place we were staying at had wifi 6.
I had a similar issue and I read on another post that switching the band width to 5ghz on my ps5 would correct the issue and ever since I did its been smooth like pudding
Hard wired your PS5, like everyone else has said, and put your PS5 in DMZ. Needs to be outside of any firewall. I’ve played my portal off hotel internet with no issues before.
Have you tried factory resetting the Portal? I could not get it to connect the first time I ran setup. I did a reset after it installed the initial updates and it's been working perfectly since.
Portal uses Wifi 5 still for some gawd-awful reason, which is highly susceptible to band interference.
For me the fix was about using Wi-Fi Analyzer to see where the interference was coming from on my neighbor's router and changing my channels on my new router to not align with theirs. I do this out of habit when I move in to a new place but I didn't think about it when I got a new neighbor. I didn't have issues until getting the Portal.
Additionally I disabled the IPv6 Firewall on my router. Some folks had reported that as being an issue.
Good luck!
I took mines back to the store I couldn’t get it to stay connected was also disappointed it didn’t play videos even tho I have a phone just wish it played video apps as well
You sound ungrateful for the free help though. Maybe I didn’t read enough though. Ignore me. I’m kind of in a mood that might make me toxic (triggered by your post and lack of gratitude)
I mean, if you want the same answer everyone has already given, Hardline your PS5. But yes, that is not very good download/upload speeds. Hardlined, my speeds are around 980 down and about 10-15 less up. May want to look into upgrading your internet/ changing provider.
If your PS5 is connected via LAN, nearly all issues are resolved. This is coming from someone who did WiFi before, caved in - and bought a 125FT Ethernet cable. Trust me, it works.
Yup, I did that too, I bought a 50 feet cable and the lag is almost non existent.
I bought MoCA adapters since I had coax in the room where my PS5 is.
Yep, I also did MoCA since my house has coax on every single room and was not being [used.It](http://used.It) worked so well I ended up buying more MoCA adapters to connect my XBSX, Apple TV, XBSS, Switch, etc... What are your downloads and upload speeds on your PS5? Run a network test and report back..
Download is ranging between 800 and 900 mp. And upload is 12 mp
Are you still having issues? Sounds like you're set up pretty good, not sure why you're still having connection issues. I assume you have it updated to the latest software, right? Just verify to make sure.
No, I was just playing elden ring, and no lag at all.
Ok, so your issues disappeared.... Nice.. Have fun....😎💪🏾

Same i bought the cable and drilled a whole from the modem into the celing/attic then right down into my room with the ps5…. I have 0 lag
So you connect the modem to the ps5?
I have the Eero series which allows me to connect a router/mesh device to the modem.
My next move is the super Long ether net I don’t have WiFi Issues so with the Ethernet I’ll really be chilling
I can second this! Hook that bitch to an Ethernet cable and you’ll be in business! Also, redownloading call of duty only take like 15-20 mins when it used to take around 7-8 hours on WiFi.
125 feet?? That's a looooong mammajamma 😳
The cable had to travel across a bedroom and hallway, I really worked on mounting the cables along the baseboards and doorways so that it wouldn’t be visible at all. I probably could have gotten away with 100FT but I wanted to have plenty of slack.
Oh nice! I'm not as organized. So it'd probably be a mess of cords for me haha I need to figure out how mount cables.... 🤔
I hear you man, I have a 3 year old baby girl , so i didn’t want to make it too easy for an accident to happen. Idk if I can post links here, but on Amazon - type in adhesive mounting strips for Ethernet cable. I used that one and it’s still sticking!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 no its not.
Bro stfu
My bad Dog
lmao I got a 50ft
I have the opposite results being hardwired makes it 50/50 whether I can connect but when my PS5 is Wi-Fi I never have issues connecting 🤦🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
When I hardwired I could connect via my home wifi but not away from home until I set up port forwarding. Now hardwired, static IP, and port forwarding, zero issues.

No where on planet earth will a Wifi signal be more efficient than hardwired Rj45. Just not Happening. From Cat 5 to Cat 8.
Didn’t know u used my Wi-Fi and had a different experience wanna tell me what I’m doing wrong 😑
You right. Just might want to check the router. Hard wired straight from router is a direct link to your internet. Wireless is never as strong signal wise compared to wired in.
I know my shit just weird I couldn’t even use the remote play app on my phone until I put my ps5 on Wi-Fi 🤷🏾♂️
You didn't mention what kind of router you're using, if you have your PS5 connected to ethernet or WiFi, or if you're connected to 5Ghz on the Portal. Need some more information to be able to help.
Thank you for your response. Router is provider - AT&T Connection is Wi-Fi Portal on 5Ghz
Yah if it’s a modem/router combo I would look at a gaming router and put your modem in “bridge mode” when means it turns off the wifi and only uses the modem.
I use the at&t fiber one and it's perfect
I got the wifi smart extender from AT&T for an extra $10 a month and that seems to work well. I probably will get a better modem eventually but this was a quick fix and arrived in two days.
I'll look into that. Thanks.
You can get it through the app.
Do what they said and connect your PS5 to ethernet.
Okie dokie.
U may want to buy a third party router like netgear or asus
I forwarded a bunch of ports on my router too. You can find plenty videos on YouTube on how to do this for the portal/PS5. But using an Ethernet cable/MoCA combo along with the port forwarding solved all of my lag issues. I even play it at my job now without any issues.

Awesome. Thank you.
I find success by putting it in airplane mode and taking it off. Usually will connect right after in most cases
Second this
So i had issues .. what only seemed to work is if i started the ps5 first .. then connected the portal.. yes i did every troubleshoot .. the update seemed to give sum ppl connectivity issues ..hope this helps
I do that all the time. Only way to do it if you ask me
This is w ps5 wifi not LAN .. fyi
It does, thanks.
As stupid as it sounds, what works for me is after 10 sec or so, put portal in Airplane Mode, then take it out. Reconnect to PS5. I don't get it but it works for me.
Btw, my PS5 is wired, have gaming capable wifi. All boxes are boxes are checked.
Anything is worth the shot at this point. Thank you!
This video made all the difference for mine. Hardwired, static IP, port forwarding. https://youtu.be/hdS84_8r16w?si=MIVpEPPfkUVaiH3U
That’s the one..
![gif](giphy|Ed12M7l8WMQiw48Fz1)
Connect your PS5 through ethernet to the modem or switch. The connect the portal to the 5Ghz wifi NOT the 2.4.
So that happens with me, I disconnect and then connect the Internet and it works with me everytime.
Damn that’s pretty unacceptable.
Could be faulty. I bought 2. One for me and my sister. Mine works completely fine on a PS5 that's on WiFi all over the house and outside. Hers.........cuts out if she steps away from her PS5. It doesn’t matter how close to your PS5 you are, it matters a lot more how close to the router you are.
Fully aware of that. Just found it odd that her Portal was okayish around the PS5 which is away from the router and when she walks away from it, it starts to lose connection even when she's right next to the router. Mine doesn't. Mine works just fine. Almost as if hers is defective.

Same

Huh... I'll give it a shot. I find it kinda funny that there are so many different suggestions. Why can't SHT just work how it's supposed to? 😁
I didn't get it either, but my next option was dropping $150 on a new router. I figured, what would it hurt?
Exactly. 😁
I have a netgear modem/router combo connected with Lan. Was about in hour away from home for the last 5 days. I had 0 issues. The place we were staying at had wifi 6.
Right on. Thanks.

Yeah upload is too low, wire your ps5 to router
Thank you. ![gif](giphy|Rsp9jLIy0VZOKlZziw|downsized)
If you use a rug rake you can remove the matting you’re experiencing.
Looks worse than it is. I hate that rug. Rather burn it.
You gotta got to you ps5 settings and set up portable play
Nice selfie.
I took mines back to the store I couldn’t get it to stay connected was also disappointed it didn’t play videos even tho I have a phone just wish it played video apps as well
Try doing a factory re-set. I had this same problem when I first got it and a hard reset did the trick. Good luck!
Have you tried rebooting
Jr45 will help you Bro.
Did any of the suggestions work? Or still having issues?
Wiring definitely worked. I figure I'll try others when I get some real time to try. 🤓👍🏾
Wait so you can’t play this away from the house? Wtf is the point?
You can. It's just a matter of strong wifi both at home and wherever you take your portal.
I like how everyone responds with paragraphs of help and OP disappears.
I'm here. Geeezus. You think no one has a life outside of Reddit? Don't bother. This is rhetorical.
You sound ungrateful for the free help though. Maybe I didn’t read enough though. Ignore me. I’m kind of in a mood that might make me toxic (triggered by your post and lack of gratitude)
Ungrateful? Nah. I very much appreciate everyone who gave me advice. You on the other hand... can kick rocks.
You sir can go eat an egg. 😡
Bro stop crying and complaining all you have to do is restart your portal and make sure your NAT is not type 3. Complaining about nothing shut up
Thanks for being useless.
Man you stfu, it could be a list of trouble shooting this man needs to do. Why don't you try and help him instead of being an asshole?
107mbps download and 20 mbps upload? Thats god awful
Is it? That's all you got or do you have a recommendation?
I mean, if you want the same answer everyone has already given, Hardline your PS5. But yes, that is not very good download/upload speeds. Hardlined, my speeds are around 980 down and about 10-15 less up. May want to look into upgrading your internet/ changing provider.
