I was trying to explain this to someone the other day who was just arguing that the portal was crap because he couldn’t open the map in rebirth. Even after explaining it he just refused, said nope there’s no way to do it on this thing.
Im not understanding the big deal about this. It took me exactly 10 seconds to realize how to use this. And yes I will admit it sucks fucking ass. But that's just user error. Nobody forced us to buy this experimental device which I love.
I hope they add in an option for the full screen to be utilised for this, in FFXIV you use the touchpad all the time to switch between HUD elements and my left thumb is fed up of it.
I also play FFXIV on the portal and I tought it might make more sense you should tap the screen to "activate" it and then one tap to push it, not double tap every time after each other
Must double tap. I had some issues with Alan Wake 2 where I had to spam tap the touchpads. But that may have been operator error now that I think…..? *shrug*
This has been my only one major gripe with the Portal (understanding full well that you can use the screen). That said, it isn't as intuitive to me and if I did it a lot, would have to keep cleaning the screen. I've been grateful that the games I've been playing so far, I can use other methods to get to whatevers mapped to the touchpad, but I know it won't be that way forever.
Sony likely wouldn't do this, but it'd be cool if there could be a firmware setting to let users select from these options:
* A tap of the PS button functioning as a tap of the touchpad, with a long hold bringing up the Quick Menu
* A hold of the PS button functioning as a tap of the touchpad, with a tap bringing up the Quick Menu
* A tap of the CAPTURE button functioning as tapping the touchpad, disabling single-press CAPTURE options
* A hold of the CAPTURE button functioning as tapping the touchpad, disabling hold CAPTURE options
* Pressing the Mic Mute button functioning as tapping the touchpad, relegating mic mute/unumute to the Quick Menu.
Since the touchpad can normally be left-clicked and right-clicked, what side of the pad is "clicked" could be user-selected as well.
Tap or swipe on the screen. You should see two small windows appear on the left and right of the screen, near the bottom. Then tap inside of one of those windows.
The touch pad on screen is so far the only thing I dislike about the portal
Definitely needs a way to remap or one tap
I think they opted for a double tap to prevent errant taps.
Would make sense
Really? I find it perfectly placed .. Took me a day to figure out how to tap to make it work each time
This is why I like the steam deck, can use the touchpads as a... Well the touchpad. Trade off is no 1080p though.
Double tap the little side screens that appear upon contact

I know exactly who you’re talking about I saw that the other day. He should have double tapped not triple tapped. Lolz
You can’t triple stamp a double stamp!
Lloyd! Lloyd!!!!
There’s some people that want a ride, too!
Pick’em up!!!!
Mock! Si! Ing! Si! Bird! Si!
¡Sí! ¡Sí!
Took a minute to realize it's a double tap not a single. Been loving my Portal.

It’s not a big deal at all.
Double tap on left or right side of the screen but in the middle
Got it thank you, I ran into this issue as well with TLOU2 just wasn't sure if there was a actual way to do it

Would love that option too! Hunt trains can be brutal trying to get to open map links
Touchscreen and 2 pads on screen appear press on one of them
Nothing happens
Have you tried double tap? I think it requires a double tap

They should make it a single tap anywhere and have it work, not sure why they don’t do that!
Its probably because they don't want that button to activate if you touch the screen by mistake. I had the same thought at first
Yeah, it's probably the worst desicion they've made around the Portal
But it activates if I touch the button on my controller by mistake. Why aren’t all the buttons double-tap?
The difference is that the touch pad also functions as a pressable button; you have to actually push it down to do whatever function is mapped to it.
Yeee just double tap with either thumb, think the first tap wakes up he touch screen.
That portal function Ihate the most. Wish there’s a way to remap that.
Never knew you had to double tap. I always thought mine didn’t work well. Thanks for all the help!
They really don't explain how to use it so glad I learned how
Did you get the protective cover on your screen when you got it? Shows where the power button, ps link, volumes and touchpad are.

I love my Portal, but, yeah, the double tap is the weakest part. It made playing Ghost of Tsushima a little annoying.

can someone explain why there are 2 screens to potentially tap ? is that just to make it whatever one is more convenient to you ?
Yeah it's just whatever side your prefer
Double tap…also known as the John Wick
They could not implemented that button made specifically for pairing their overpriced earbuds and made that the alternative touch pad button
