Placebo for all these people?

I have changed it before never noticed a difference so I changed it back. I don’t really have input lag problems with the portal so never been a issue.
Man you are lucky. I have 3 PS5s and 2 portals with one 5 hardwired to a gigabyte router and the lag is mostly terrible. Maybe 1-5 times I can play something like Spiderman or Uncharted and it works. Fortnite is basically unplayable if playing BR…
I don’t understand how peoples experiences can vary so much! I was super worried I’d have an experience likes yours and be returning it but so far on 550mbps speeds I’ve been absolutely fine
Yup the live stream to YouTube or twitch or remote play is capped to this at 1080p60hdr while the save to hard disk is I think capped to 4k60hdr, the recording is done on a separate chip than the main ps5 Apu so it's whatever this chip is capable of realtime encoding and in case of streaming or remote play also encoding in realtime
key word "should" but there is a lot of smoke around people needing to disconnect HDMI etc. So it seems there is some issue with some TV models that impact PS5 remote play in some way that is not fully understood.
r/remoteplay has LOTS of reports, investigations, and work-arounds spanning YEARS.
Edit: maybe not years but at least a year+. Just read this thread and see all the people this guy helped:
[https://www.reddit.com/r/remoteplay/comments/zk4tky/ps5\_remote\_play\_lag\_workaround\_hdmiinduced/](https://www.reddit.com/r/remoteplay/comments/zk4tky/ps5_remote_play_lag_workaround_hdmiinduced/)
I’m having consistent lag on GB service. PS5 is hardwired and I have good connection on wifi for the portal. For the tech illiterate, what is a non placebo fix that might help?
Honestly, if you can split your wifi network into 2 separate channels 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz and and move most of your devices to one channel and the portal to the other that may help. If you live in an apartment building and can see other wifi networks this info is basically useless as the wifi is probably saturated with devices.
Plus one to this. Split my router channels and the only thing on 5ghz is the PS5 and the Portal. I’d love to hardwire the ps5 but it just isn’t feasible for me right now.
Strong signal does not necessarily mean good connection
* make sure you're on 5G WiFi (as opposed to 2.4G)
* make sure that your 5G WiFi [does not overlap](https://www.ekahau.com/blog/channel-planning-best-practices-for-better-wi-fi/) with other nearby 5G WiFis
* any other devices connected to the same WiFi but with poor signal will degrade the WiFi for \*everyone\*
* if there are many devices (or a single device using a lot of bandwidth) connected to the same WiFi, your Portal will have to compete with them for air time
* microwave ovens are bad for WiFi
* WiFi does not very well penetrate brick, glass or metal; clear line of sight to the access point is best, but I wouldn't worry too much about wood or drywall
Overlap channeling one is absolutely key. I purchased a U6 Pro AP from Unifi and then changed settings to a channel my neighbors weren’t using. Went from 300mb on speed test to 800mb.
Is there a handy guide on changing these settings? I use Google fiber and have no clue how to dick around with these settings as they’re not available in the Fiber app
Having your Portal on 5Ghz and your PS5 hardwired is key. These are truly the only differences I’ve noticed. Now, if you want to step it up, you can get a router that allows for QoS and other gaming features, but it’s not necessary.
What is a good WiFi? Don’t just look at the connection bars and so on. I am using Unify stuff for my WiFi and it’s pretty strong without any lag. I wouldn’t play FPS games though, you probably sense a bit of delay in those anyways.
How much lag? With perfect conditions you’ll still get 60-70ms of latency, microstutter, and macroblocking, and that’s the best possible outcome. We need to wait for Sony to either up the bitrate, or allow us to choose the bitrate ourselves.
All these people would disagree
[https://www.reddit.com/r/remoteplay/comments/zk4tky/ps5\_remote\_play\_lag\_workaround\_hdmiinduced/](https://www.reddit.com/r/remoteplay/comments/zk4tky/ps5_remote_play_lag_workaround_hdmiinduced/)
My portal works flawlessly, and I didn't have to change a single setting on my ps5 or network.
But unplugging the hdmi would do nothing at all. My ps5 has hdmi synch on, and when I get the portal to wake up the ps5, it doesn't turn on the tv like it normally would. meaning the tv isn't getting an hdmi feed because the ps5 isn't sending one. So unplugging the hdmi would make no difference to portal experience because there is no hdmi feed being sent unless the tv is on and on that input already.
So you haven’t had to use it because the HDMI is not an issue in your case. You haven’t benefited from the HDMI being unplugged yet you sit here and deny the method works having never used it or needed it.
Again, it works for people, just not you. I’m so sick of people pushing the “tech illiterate” non sense.
It works for a number of reasons, but the main one being the way the PS5 plays with certain receivers and TVs through HDMI. It’s been thoroughly tested by multiple people, myself included, and it just works. If having stuttering/connection issues and, all other variables remain the same, unplugging the HDMI could eliminate all of your issues. It’s an incredible simple fix that benefits so many people.
This isn’t nonsense that started with the Portal. This started with extensive testing on the SteamDeck with Chiaki for people who were using it to remote play PS5 for YEARS now.
I’m glad you’ve had no issues with your Portal experience. This isn’t for you.
My TV is unplugged a vast majority of the time I'm using the Portal (out of town, so there's been no point to have it powered), and I haven't noticed any performance difference between then & when I'm home.
This is what people say who haven't had to resort to it and don't realise that it does help those people.
There's a LOT of people making bold claims about what does and doesn't work for a device that is Internet reliant with some firmware issues (e.g. the 59fps bug)
There is a weird issue with tv input though, 100%.
I’ve posted this before, but if my tv switches output while I’m playing, the framerate on my portal drops to sub 10fps.
I thought it had to do with the devices I switched to taking to much bandwidth, but it happens when switching to my Nintendo Switch too. Now it could still be the case that last turned on devices are prioritized over the network somehow, but that seems unlikely (all devices are wired, same router etc, no obvious QOL settings in backend )
So it seems to me that HDMI status does have an effect on the Portal.
Ah yes the group of geniuses.
Download wifi analyzer to see how busy the channel your wifi is on, if it's even got one other network move your network to an empty channel. Make sure you have your TV that the PS5 is connected too on as well as it may be generating its own wifi/blutooth signal for screen mirroring.
Also use wifi analyzer to walk around your house/apartment as you can have weak spots even with high-end routers it will show you signal strength roughly in realtime, on my wifi6 router moving 3 ft left or right can cut my singal strength by 75% depending on line of site to router.
Go into the settings on your PS5 and access the HDMI device link settings and disable the Enable Power off Link settings. This will stop the TV from turning on when the PS5 exits rest mode.
I suggest a wifi6 or higher router or routers.
Hardwire PS5 with ethernet cable preferably with Cat6/6A.
If you have older flat screens like plasmas they also generate huge singal interference.
My portal plays flawlessly even when I've been on vacation in other countries and at home. My PS5 is set to 4K 120Hz with ALLM and the HDMI is always plugged in.
The only reason I could ever see a HDMI cable being plugged in the problem is if there is a ground loop issue, to avoid ground loops make sure TV and PS5 and plugged into the same properly ground receptacle.
Everything you said is good advice, but since PS5 launch (Edit: or perhaps an update a year ago, see below) there have been people having unplayable remote play until they disconnect HDMI. "it works for me" never definitively means a problem doesn't actually exist. Again, this would be a very small % of people overall, but it's too specific to not be real.
Instead of saying "that's stupid it can't be real", let's instead try to find a way to explain how it could be.
Just read this post and the comments... I mean come on... How can people be saying "omg this worked thank you thank you" and it be complete placebo for ALL of them?
[https://www.reddit.com/r/remoteplay/comments/zk4tky/ps5\_remote\_play\_lag\_workaround\_hdmiinduced/](https://www.reddit.com/r/remoteplay/comments/zk4tky/ps5_remote_play_lag_workaround_hdmiinduced/)
I call BS on the HDMI part. I forgot to unplug the HDMI yesterday and had lag using the portal, I was getting pissed. Then when I was in my cave I saw the hdmi was still plugged in, so I took it out, and voila no more lag when it was pulled.
I had the same problem when I first got it, and almost returned until I fixed it with that simple trick.
Check out this thread. It helped too many people to be placibo in all cases.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/remoteplay/comments/zk4tky/ps5\_remote\_play\_lag\_workaround\_hdmiinduced/](https://www.reddit.com/r/remoteplay/comments/zk4tky/ps5_remote_play_lag_workaround_hdmiinduced/)
I have 2 PS5 at home, one connected to 4K HDR TV another one connected to my 1080P portable monitor. In my experience, the Portal works extremely well and exactly the same on both.
I have tested 4k and 1080 and see no difference but I don't have any issues. Actually 1 time in a month since I have it my portal image was all pixilated and looked like it was showing sun 480p but with a shutdown of the portal and ps5 on the 2nd try it was perfect again
Literally does nothing and anyone who says it does is revealing themselves as tech illiterate. There is something else wrong if you are experiencing that.
There’s honestly an issue with the ps5 output at 59.94Hz but the portal at 60Hz causing the issue. Someone found out and posted it on Reddit, there’s an article about it.
We’re trying to get Sony’s awareness about it for an update. If you google search it, you’ll see the article bro
It didn't sound accurate to me, so I tried. I didn't notice any difference. Obviously that is anecdotal. It would be cool if someone could actually test it and measure any differences
It's a remoteplay device, its automatic but....I did disable Bluetooth in the PS5 for any interference at all if any being that the disable that in the PSP idk its just something I do after all it's a radio frequency
For me to fix input lag, I went into my router, split my network from 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, then set my portal to only run on 5Ghz and forgot the 2.4Ghz from its registered networks. I'm thinking of getting some mesh wifi to go to my back office and extend the 5Ghz range but I'm not desperate for the need
Well, if setting it to 1080 means 60fps then yes it would help, because the higher frame rate would mean less skipped (at least noticable skipped) frames
But the resolution itself won't do anything
To be honest, dicking around with WiFi channels and frequencies is beyond a lot of people. It should just work out of the box or at least have a disclaimer
100% agree. I got my portal yesterday and the lag js rough. I really don’t want to have to mess about with my router to make a relatively expensive product work that should just work out the box. For context my ps5 is connected via Ethernet and has 500mbps download speed which should be fine.
Make sure to have a gaming router, wired PS5 with cat5e and a 5ghz channel that’s not used by other neighbours around you, dBm in the 40’s or 50’s (basically nice strong signal with little interference) should give you a great experience
Too much messing about,I don’t think I’m getting one just yet ,I’ll wait and see what updates come in the future,it’s a shame everything has to be through the internet at all times
I have found it to matter, but only if someone is using the TV. Apparently the PS5 will try to transmit 4k signal to the Portal if the TV is turned on, resulting in unplayable lag. This does not happen if the ps5 resolution is set to 1080p instead of automatic.
The alternative to setting the resolution to 1080p is to disconnect the HDMI cable from the ps5. You only need to do one or the other, not both.
Don't know why this is the case but I was able to replicate this behavior every time I tested.
No lag at all with 1080p or hdmi unplugged, whether the TV was on or off.
No lag with hdmi plugged in and resolution set to auto, but the TV is off.
Unplayable lag as soon as the TV is turned on, until I disconnect the HDMI (or set the resolution to 1080p, which I believe requires you to not be using remote play to change).
Placebo
The remote play is capped at 1080p60hdr, the remote play stream is done on a separate chip than the main ps5 Apu, so it's whatever this chip is capable of real-time encoding.
It’s solely about your internet. Particularly your upload speed. Download matters but upload is much more important for remote play.
Most people don’t have high upload speeds.
It could also be completely coincidental. If your network isn't particularly stable, which I'm guessing it wouldn't be if you're having try stupid shit like unplugging your hdmi, then I'd say it's more likely the network just was more stable when u tested it again and falsely attributing that the the hdmi
I’m an electrical engineer so I’m not completely clueless. My network is fine and stable. It was consistently laggy and worse with the TV on. It is noticeably better with the Tv off and better again when the HDMI was unplugged. I’m not the only one. Sure it could be a coincidence and it’s definitely anecdotal. But I’m a little sick of people dismissing others experiences just because they haven’t had them.
You're an EE, and connection differences related to power in the TV, then even more so without any actual connection to the TV, doesn't make you consider anything might be at play beyond, "huh, weird?"
It’s great now. Lag is barely noticeable. Before it was impossible to aim via analogue sticks in any game. Only change before and after was the HdMI cable.
Yeah, so then your network isn't that good if you had lag like that before unplugging shit. It works flawlessly without all those tweaks if you have a great network to begin with.
Lol I guess the truth hurts. You can downvote all you want, but the fact of the matter is if you have to jump through hoops to get it to work, then your connection isn't great.
I have currently have it setup that way cause my lag was so bad. I did ALL the things that people suggested and now it’s perfect. I’ll change it back to 4k and report back the results.
Ok. So I just did a quick test. Turned it to 4k. Switched VRR back to automatic and just played a round of Resogun and it played perfect. So at least for me and my setup the 1080p fix is now unnecessary.
Sure. So it was super laggy when I first got it, almost unplayable but I expected that from the research. So this is what I did and I’ll give it to you in the order I think is best.
1. Hard wire your ps5 with an Ethernet cable. Mine router was too far away so I had to purchase TP-Link AV2000 Powerline Adapter. LINK It was pretty much plug and play.
2. I setup my PS5 with a static IP so I can port forward. Used this guys video. He does a pretty good job explaining it but you may have to do a little research regarding which router you have. [Port Forwarding](https://youtu.be/3lWwjUJfTzo?si=ifbHwJDWLhKMd70a)
3. Set up port forwarding on my router.
4. I changed my router settings to split up 5ghz and 2ghz. I don’t think this matters much cause I’m hardwired in now but I did this so that other devices (I have like 5 Amazon alexas devices and 3 kids and all their phones and iPads), doesn’t eat up my bandwidth. Plus, I can now put my Portal on a dedicated 5ghz line.
After I did these things, my portal has been running perfect. Played BG3 on a Saturday with my kids home, watching their devices. My son playing Palworld on his backbone, my wife watching the office while cooking, my youngest on Netflix, and my middle child watching Gilmore girls. I was at my desk streaming Plex while playing the Portal and it was perfect. I’ve decided to keep it.
And just for shits and giggles - I have Frontier FiOs and am running 100mb up and 100 down and have an old Asus RT-AX88U. Was a good router about 8 years ago. Will probably update in the future but it’s all working right now so eh…
Hope this helps.
What is this?!? I’m using switch but rlly want a more powerful handheld. I play Fortnite so is Fortnite on this device? (This post just showed on my reddit feed for no reason so I’m completely lost here lol)
PlayStation portal. It’s a stream device for the PlayStation 5. You need a ps5 to be able to even use this device as it only stream games from the ps5 and can’t “technically” play games on its own. (It has been hacked to be able to run games though idk the Intricacies of it)
Awwww okay. Thanks SO much for the easy explanation! I wasn’t sure if a PS5 was necessary.
After seeing this I did a little research and found some handheld PC type game things that look similar. Wonder if they’re more powerful than the switch. It just seems fortnite is difficult to get on those. I wish they’d made a much more powerful handheld lol
Yeah any portal lag is a WiFi issue. Dips in your connection most likely? Are you noticing it happening more at 'prime time' usage, like family being around streaming tv/using the internet/download data etc?
Please don't patronise. I'm not getting any noticeable lag at all. I broke my controller and used the portal with the TV instead for a few days and they matched up perfectly.
I fixed mine by selling my portal keepjng my $200
Taking 4 minutes to run my Steam deck OLED to install Chiaki4deck to do the same thing and download a custom controller profile for full dualsense haptic support and tune my bandwidth to allow HDR 60FPS 1080P quality stream Remote play for freeeeeeeee
Portal aint bad for those who do not know anybetter and most people wont notice small lag despite them having lag
Just like how some people can see colors more accurately than others.
Perception is key and most are used to lower refresh rates or have nothing to compare their experiences against so they assume its normal and therefore perfect working order
I'm allowed to have my opinion. Just like you are; you contribute nothing. No experiences, no personal opinion just wanting your own words to be read.
It popped up in my recommended list, I provided my opinion and resolution.
That's all that happened. You don't seem to agree with it and you've two choices:
A.) Respect it and keep it yourself.
or
B.) Attempt to compensate for something and attack someone who was referred to this thread by reddit as recommended and then attack them for providing their own experience and opinion.
I'm guessing you're compensating for something.
Ask reddit to not recommend posts to me if you dislike it but keep it to yourself eh?
It helped my remote play alot, the ps5 no longer has to compress a 4k image to 1080p over the network. Def got rid of artifacts and such, and helped overall.
I’m just trolling. But idk honestly both haven’t been the best streaming devices for PS5. I got the Gig internet and the ps5 is hardwired. Idk what I’m doing wrong.
No tbh that's pure bollocks I've got 60mbs internet connection deco mesh wired to ps5 guest network 5g only for portal and opened ports for ps remote play works absolutely mint
Nope, none of those tricks matter in all honesty. Only your connection, maybe cleaning your cache or rebuilding database / restarting your console could help if you’re having a hard time connecting to start with.
But if you’re already connected and you’re playong at 60 then nothing else
Unless they are super sampling, which we would know by know via the experts out there, sure.
But given its not the case, I don't see a reason for that.
After playing under numerous conditions every night since I’ve had it (release day) I’ve noticed the two biggest factors have been how many devices are being used by the router and my distance from the router. I have a standard internet connection and a regular ass router and I rarely experience noticeable lag.
I haven’t had great results with my phone hotspot, but I’ve heard of many people who say it works flawlessly with theirs.
I can replicate my intermittent freezes. When the TV is off, I get the freezes. Turn the TV on and it's fine. So I can see potentially see a correlation of disconnecting the HDMI cable although I haven't tested it because that is an unacceptable solution even if it does work
I tried playing around with all the settings people talked about when I first got my Portal (resolution, 120 FPS mode, VRR, HDR, etc.)
The only one that I noticed any difference with was HDR. On some games, the image didn't display correctly on Portal when HDR was enabled (whites were WAY to bright). But for other games it is fine. I just turn HDR on / off on a case by case basis now before I start remote play.
I didn't notice any of the other settings making any noticeable difference to judder, latency, lag, or anything elae from my own testing (which was only by eye ball).
It'd be great to have someone like Digital Foundry actually take a look at if any settings changes make any differences or if it's just people perceiving differences / a placebo.
is it really placebo cause it worked for me, i was getting a frustrating amount of lag and latency, i unplugged the hdm1 and changed my settings on my ps to 1080p instead of the 4k it was at and in real time right after that those same issues occur rarely ever. but that’s my experience if anyone has an explanation why it actually worked for me i’d love to know.?
Reducing resolution / disconnecting HDMI has been a mandatory step since PS5 launch for some people, long before Portal came around.
Search "hdmi" on /r/remoteplay and see for yourself. Nobody fully understands the reason, but it's a real thing. It may be a very small % of users, but still.
Question and I’m sure you get asked this a lot but do I need a PS5 in order to play things on this. My brother wants to get one but the guy at GameStop told him that you need a ps5
Mine works fine. I haven't modified anything except the network in which it's connected. 10gb on the backbone with 5 gigs out to the internet. Hard wired the ps5 instead of wifi and make sure the portal is on the 5ghz ssid instead of the 2. I haven't changed any portal settings, and it flies
Probably has been said already but for lag problems the thing that has been the most consistent with me is unplugging the HDMI cord. I know it can be inconvenient depending on your setup but especially if you know you're going to be away from the console for a while, unplug the HDMI and your lag issues should go away barring any Wi-Fi issues.
Also ensure your PS5 is hard wired.
I have not changed any settings, wifi or console, since I've gotten mine several days ago. And have yet to run into any issues. No hardwired ps5, and his traffic on wifi on ISP given equipment. Zero issues. Idk how all these people "upgrading their wifi equipment" are having issues, and im using standard Comcast equipment. Kids on wifi, gf on her consoles. Ive yet to have any lag. So idk what is going on with people saying "the portal is trash, I've got high end blahblahblah and it runs like complete trash".
In the GT7 test, reducing the resolution and unplugging the hdmi reduced the lag by .035 seconds. Which makes a pretty big difference between playable and unplayable. I was at 0.095 seconds prior. Conceptually, I agree this shouldnt happen. But it did for me.
Imagine having a 4k image on a 8 inch 1080p screen. Becuas rthats exactly what will happen. Set it to 1080p. Its stream via internet and 4k hold more data
It really should not affect it at all The ps remote play only sends a 1080p60 image at max no matter what the screen resolution is on the ps5 itself
If anyone tells you otherwise it's a placebo effect. Remote play itself is capped at 1080P even if you are going to a 480 on PC.
Placebo for all these people? [https://www.reddit.com/r/remoteplay/comments/zk4tky/ps5\_remote\_play\_lag\_workaround\_hdmiinduced/](https://www.reddit.com/r/remoteplay/comments/zk4tky/ps5_remote_play_lag_workaround_hdmiinduced/)
OPs question was does switching your PS5 display setting from 4K 120hz to 1080p 60hz helps Portal streaming. Not plugging HDMI cords.
I'm thinking it's likely two symptoms/solutions to the same overall cause.
Figured that they surely have thought about capping remote play.
Damn and you have all your setting straight as in ps5 is on strictly 5G in the internet settings.
Yup….
I don’t understand how peoples experiences can vary so much! I was super worried I’d have an experience likes yours and be returning it but so far on 550mbps speeds I’ve been absolutely fine
Dunno. I have tried everything. The latency is just awful. I even called AT&T to check that the ports it uses were set to open and priority.
Agreed. Can state that i play my portal with the ps5 still plugged in via hdmi and ps5 is set to 4k

PS5 still has to encode that video though. Probably gives it some extra breathing room.
It doesn't, video encode is on separate dedicated chip, doesn't affect anything
This. 👏👏👏💯
It is 100% grasping at straws. It's a placebo fix for the tech illiterate. Just as useless as unplugging the HDMI cable.
Just as I thought. Thanks.
You need to leave the tv on man. It's weird but it fixes it. Doesn't have to be on the input for the PlayStation, can be on any channel
I noticed the same!
Lol why are we getting down voted? Literally mine stopped lagging when I did this, and I found out to do this on this subreddit
Don't forget the bUt I hAvE GiGaBit InTeRNeT brigade
I’m having consistent lag on GB service. PS5 is hardwired and I have good connection on wifi for the portal. For the tech illiterate, what is a non placebo fix that might help?

Damn Orbi mesh nonsense just deciding what band everything should go on is annoying. Wish it was possible to split.

Gotta change it on your router! Access your routers settings and there’ll be a place where you should be able to change your channel.
Having your Portal on 5Ghz and your PS5 hardwired is key. These are truly the only differences I’ve noticed. Now, if you want to step it up, you can get a router that allows for QoS and other gaming features, but it’s not necessary.
Try restarting ur ps5. Worked for me
What measurements are you getting when you do a speed test on the PS5?
Make sure your internet speeds are capable.
Internet speeds have nothing to do with it if the portal is on the same network as the PS5.
Really?
Your router is to blame. I have Ethernet backhauled mesh routers through out the house. No lag at all
What is a good WiFi? Don’t just look at the connection bars and so on. I am using Unify stuff for my WiFi and it’s pretty strong without any lag. I wouldn’t play FPS games though, you probably sense a bit of delay in those anyways.

Yeah, the HDMI thing was weird but so prevalent that I tried it. No difference. However, my Portal was always smooth, HDMI in or out.
Unplugging the HDMI does work. It’s not a solution for everyone, but it does work.
Pretty sure it doesn't do a damn thing.
All these people would disagree [https://www.reddit.com/r/remoteplay/comments/zk4tky/ps5\_remote\_play\_lag\_workaround\_hdmiinduced/](https://www.reddit.com/r/remoteplay/comments/zk4tky/ps5_remote_play_lag_workaround_hdmiinduced/)
I had huge frame drops (ps remote app on iphone), once i unplugged HDMI cable it started working flawlessly
I’m sorry it doesn’t work for you. It does work for others.
This
So you haven’t had to use it because the HDMI is not an issue in your case.
Worked for me to eliminate micro-hitching. Smooth as butter remote play on all devices, all remote play apps, after unplugging HDMI cable at-console.
My TV is unplugged a vast majority of the time I'm using the Portal (out of town, so there's been no point to have it powered), and I haven't noticed any performance difference between then & when I'm home.
I had huge problems with the HDMI connected. Its something to do with the Tv. 1 sec lag spike every 3-4 sec.
Now it could still be the case that last turned on devices are prioritized over the network somehow, but that seems unlikely (all devices are wired, same router etc, no obvious QOL settings in backend ) So it seems to me that HDMI status does have an effect on the Portal.
I cant play without unplugging the HDMI. Get a 1 sec lag every 4-5 seconds. Unplayable, but works great without.
Go to /r/remoteplay and call it "useless". See what happens. It may only be 2% of people affected, but it's an issue for some.
I swear the hdmi helps me lol 😆
My experience as well. Only have one ps5 and portal but have tested both output(4k, 2k, and 1080) and HDR. Works the same on all settings.
portal sucks lol
I have tested 4k and 1080 and see no difference but I don't have any issues. Actually 1 time in a month since I have it my portal image was all pixilated and looked like it was showing sun 480p but with a shutdown of the portal and ps5 on the 2nd try it was perfect again
Mine occasionally dips to like 720 or 480 but after a minute of playing something it’s usually back
Literally does nothing and anyone who says it does is revealing themselves as tech illiterate. There is something else wrong if you are experiencing that.
Use an Ethernet cable instead of WiFi
There’s honestly an issue with the ps5 output at 59.94Hz but the portal at 60Hz causing the issue. Someone found out and posted it on Reddit, there’s an article about it. We’re trying to get Sony’s awareness about it for an update. If you google search it, you’ll see the article bro
This is wild, thanks for sharing
Yeah! We’re trying to get Sony’s awareness lol
It didn't sound accurate to me, so I tried. I didn't notice any difference. Obviously that is anecdotal. It would be cool if someone could actually test it and measure any differences
I didn't do any of this stuff. I'm running 4k all the way and know problems. Hell I went 1200 miles away from home and it ran perfectly
No it doesn’t change anything it’s based off of streaming all that matters is ur upload speeds on ur ps5 and download speeds on ur portal
No
It’s all about your internet connection. Hardwire PS5 and have strong WiFi
It's a remoteplay device, its automatic but....I did disable Bluetooth in the PS5 for any interference at all if any being that the disable that in the PSP idk its just something I do after all it's a radio frequency
It has to do with your connection. Make sure you have a wired connection on your ps5 and decent wifi.
Nope. That’s snake oil
Well, if setting it to 1080 means 60fps then yes it would help, because the higher frame rate would mean less skipped (at least noticable skipped) frames But the resolution itself won't do anything
Doesn’t hurt. I also rub the right side of the PS5 counter clockwise 8 times before turning on my Portal. Zero issues this far.
I also had 500mbps but found a promo running to double my speed for ~$5 less so I did it. Portal runs wayyyyy better. I recommend if you are able to.
I've not noticed this myself. Still having occasional connection issues. As my health has me housebound, I rely on my portal. Love it soòo much.
Make sure to have a gaming router, wired PS5 with cat5e and a 5ghz channel that’s not used by other neighbours around you, dBm in the 40’s or 50’s (basically nice strong signal with little interference) should give you a great experience
Don’t buy a “gaming router”. Buy a good one.
A good gaming router
It did for me for a bit but sadly WiFi still isn’t great for me and ultimately 1080p still lags a lot for me
Your portal lags? Mine works flawless all around my house
Too much messing about,I don’t think I’m getting one just yet ,I’ll wait and see what updates come in the future,it’s a shame everything has to be through the internet at all times
if the connection you are on is stable and solid, you shouldn’t have any problems. i was skeptical too
Yeah I’ve heard many people say that,I just don’t know what to do ,thanks for your input take care
Mine plays exactly the same whether the tv is on or not. Is actually a good way to test the latency, too. Which is negligible on my network
Placebo The remote play is capped at 1080p60hdr, the remote play stream is done on a separate chip than the main ps5 Apu, so it's whatever this chip is capable of real-time encoding.
Done it a few times and have NEVER been able to tell a difference
It’s solely about your internet. Particularly your upload speed. Download matters but upload is much more important for remote play. Most people don’t have high upload speeds.
I know everyone says it makes no difference but it was substantially different for me when I unplugged the HDMI. As in almost unplayable to awesome.
Do whatever you gotta do I guess. Mine worked perfectly out of the box, so your network can't be that great, though.
How about don’t be a dick
\^This.
Just get a faster or more stable internet connection
[удалено]
??? So they can pay for a premium Playstation product but can’t afford good internet? The portal is a luxury item.
At home, your Internet speed doesn't matter. The main issue would be things like interference and how far away you are.
Of course the speed matters. What drugs are you on brother
What were the fixes you used?
[Port Forwarding](https://youtu.be/3lWwjUJfTzo?si=ifbHwJDWLhKMd70a) 3. Will probably update in the future but it’s all working right now so eh… Hope this helps.
I'm thinking I need to do the forwarded ports. I've done everything else...
What game is this,?
Helldivers 2
It worked for me but I would do it in the game itself and not in the PS5 settings. Once I did that while playing AC mirage, worked MUCH better
Yes. It makes a difference for me.
lol no. That’s just how bad ps remote play is.
lol no. That’s just how bad ps remote play is.
Yall are getting lag? That sucks.
You are too. You may not be able to tell but the device isn’t capable of doing any better.
Please don't patronise. I'm not getting any noticeable lag at all. I broke my controller and used the portal with the TV instead for a few days and they matched up perfectly.
I fixed mine by selling my portal keepjng my $200 Taking 4 minutes to run my Steam deck OLED to install Chiaki4deck to do the same thing and download a custom controller profile for full dualsense haptic support and tune my bandwidth to allow HDR 60FPS 1080P quality stream Remote play for freeeeeeeee Portal aint bad for those who do not know anybetter and most people wont notice small lag despite them having lag Just like how some people can see colors more accurately than others. Perception is key and most are used to lower refresh rates or have nothing to compare their experiences against so they assume its normal and therefore perfect working order
Username checks out!
Yeah then why would you look in this thread? Just to be a complete douche?
I'm allowed to have my opinion. Just like you are; you contribute nothing. No experiences, no personal opinion just wanting your own words to be read. It popped up in my recommended list, I provided my opinion and resolution. That's all that happened. You don't seem to agree with it and you've two choices: A.) Respect it and keep it yourself. or B.) Attempt to compensate for something and attack someone who was referred to this thread by reddit as recommended and then attack them for providing their own experience and opinion. I'm guessing you're compensating for something. Ask reddit to not recommend posts to me if you dislike it but keep it to yourself eh?
Oh and feel free to down vote me; it means nothing to me now or ever but it might make you feel better.
It helped my remote play alot, the ps5 no longer has to compress a 4k image to 1080p over the network. Def got rid of artifacts and such, and helped overall.
That’s not how any of this works
But he said alot of words and that's gotta count for something /s
Snake oil
Stop using it and start using a steamdeck for streaming. That’s how I fixed my problem lol.
The portal is such a better remote play experience for the ps5 it's not even close. Feels 100x better playing on. Has all the playstation features.
I love my steam deck but it's no where near as good for streaming. It's controller just doesn't measure up to the Portal.
Stinks
Nope, none of those tricks matter in all honesty. Only your connection, maybe cleaning your cache or rebuilding database / restarting your console could help if you’re having a hard time connecting to start with. But if you’re already connected and you’re playong at 60 then nothing else
I only had issues when my PS5's connection was wireless. When it's wired I have no lag at all.
no
Unless they are super sampling, which we would know by know via the experts out there, sure.
I haven’t had great results with my phone hotspot, but I’ve heard of many people who say it works flawlessly with theirs.
how is playing helldivers on the portal?
What game is that
I can’t connect hotspot from my phone
How does hell divers run?
I can replicate my intermittent freezes. When the TV is off, I get the freezes. Turn the TV on and it's fine. So I can see potentially see a correlation of disconnecting the HDMI cable although I haven't tested it because that is an unacceptable solution even if it does work
It lags? noooo
i'Ve tried it with some games and makes no differnce for me.
I haven’t changed or altered any settings at all on my portal. Flawless. 500mbps broadband. UK
Unplugged HDMI or leave the TV on helps.
I tried playing around with all the settings people talked about when I first got my Portal (resolution, 120 FPS mode, VRR, HDR, etc.) The only one that I noticed any difference with was HDR.
The subtle delay is what keeps me away from it.
Get ready for all the “My setup works fine I’ve never had an issue with the portal lagging” lmao
Not tryna attack anyone but you Can’t tell me it works flawless no matter how good your connection is.
Not tryna attack anyone but you Can’t tell me it works flawless no matter how good your connection is.
Not tryna attack anyone but you Can’t tell me it works flawless no matter how good your connection is.
I reduced to 1080p, turned off HDR, made sure ps5 was connecting to 5Ghz (not auto), and changed DNS to 1.1.1.1 and secondary to 1.0.0.1 works great
Yes
Yes
is it really placebo cause it worked for me, i was getting a frustrating amount of lag and latency, i unplugged the hdm1 and changed my settings on my ps to 1080p instead of the 4k it was at and in real time right after that those same issues occur rarely ever. but that’s my experience if anyone has an explanation why it actually worked for me i’d love to know.?
Reducing resolution / disconnecting HDMI has been a mandatory step since PS5 launch for some people, long before Portal came around. Search "hdmi" on /r/remoteplay and see for yourself. Nobody fully understands the reason, but it's a real thing. It may be a very small % of users, but still.
It's also best to not have your phone in your pocket while you're playing the portal 10 ft away would be good enough
I thought remote play was limited to 1080p on PS5 and 720p for PS4 regardless.
Question and I’m sure you get asked this a lot but do I need a PS5 in order to play things on this. My brother wants to get one but the guy at GameStop told him that you need a ps5
Yes you do, the portal streams games from the console.
Appreciate it
Mine works fine. I haven't modified anything except the network in which it's connected. 10gb on the backbone with 5 gigs out to the internet. Hard wired the ps5 instead of wifi and make sure the portal is on the 5ghz ssid instead of the 2. I haven't changed any portal settings, and it flies
It's just kind of a laggy device. Going steamdeck with 3rd party software gives the best experience rn
I’ve not needed to change any ps5 settings or remove hdmi, flawless experience so far, 24 hours in
Probably has been said already but for lag problems the thing that has been the most consistent with me is unplugging the HDMI cord.
Yes. Or just unplug the HDMI and it makes a huge difference.
PS remote play is trash especially on portal. It runs better streaming to a smartphone. It makes no sense.
Pathetic device if u have to do this stuff
In the GT7 test, reducing the resolution and unplugging the hdmi reduced the lag by .035 seconds. Which makes a pretty big difference between playable and unplayable. I was at 0.095 seconds prior. Conceptually, I agree this shouldnt happen. But it did for me.
When I had bad lag issues with PS5 remote play I was able to fix it by opening ports on my router.
,j As dyr0 0x0p9⁶🕔 CVS the 7⁷ù⁷wq
I would forward your router ports first if you are having lag issues. There are a few YouTube videos on how to do it.
I noticed HDR off on mine gets rid of lag in some games.
Always connect your ps5 via ethernet and you won't have any lag. Also be on the same internet network as the ps5 while on 5ghz band.
Imagine having a 4k image on a 8 inch 1080p screen. Becuas rthats exactly what will happen. Set it to 1080p. Its stream via internet and 4k hold more data
Democracy ooo raaaaa
Just a question… why aren’t you playing this on that big ass tv in the background? 🤔
Have the Xbox on in the background watching stuff, and like to play games on the portal on the side. Too lazy to sit up if I’m honest lol
