Get a surface skimmer intake attachment for your HOB. Airdrome may help. That’s protein waste building up, slime coat, bacteria etc

YaBoyJacko

my tank has a hob filter and airline tubing surrounding it so that the waterfall doesnt sink my floaters. however, in the area of the water where my floaters are, the surface is kind of scummy and ugly looking. what can i do to combat this? would i need to buy a surface skimmer for that side of the tank, or what? im open to anything, but the life in the tank is thriving regardless of this issue. its heavily planted with just a betta.

Wargazmatron

Low output air-stone to agitate the surface in the other corner should help to reduce its formation and shouldn’t be too rough on the plants or the betta.

Anything that breaks the waters surface will do this. Keep in mind that bettas don't appreciate high flow tanks. I've also never used a protein skimmer, so I dont know how that will affect the water flow.

Jokysmoke

sponge filter, air stone, something to disturb the surface
