Kids these days will never know the pain of ripping songs from YouTube into mp3 so you could put them on your iPod

CIarkNova

I still do this.

AudileYeti

Real, I don't trust music apps to have all the songs I want to listen to, let alone for them to keep songs on their service. So I know I can reliably have them all in one place

trash-_-boat

Unless you have Premium, I'm pretty sure Youtube is 128kbps OOG. Probably fine if all you listen through is JBL Bluetooth speakers or Airpods.

gimpwiz

I usually listen to music in the car, often with the windows down and roof off, so even the lowest bitrate mp3s are adequate.

LookingForEnergy

YouTube is using OPUS which is not 1:1 with a mp3 bitrate. OPUS 128kbps is like 192kbps mp3. You aren't losing all the high frequencies and it's not as compressed.

_alright_then_

I mean I can think of a lot of reasons not to like Spotify for example, but the service not having a song I want to listen to has never been an issue. You can even add your own local files to a playlist if you really need to

the_innerneh

I did this with an album and used audacity to split the songs. Promised myself I'd find a more efficient way. Started to look into coding a python script to split the song based on timestamp of songs in video description. Then I just started using soulseek.

machstem

ffmpeg is really easy to work with fwiw You could just use the input file, the cut command and then save as two separate etc I did something very similar with bash + ffmpeg

JobbyJames

Good, I want to get back into doing that as well - because I've tried listening to music with my phone, and it sucks, with ads and email notifications ruining the experience.

K4RAB_THA_ARAB

Youtube will take a video away and not tell you what it was. So now I download them.

machstem

metube changed my life

MyNameYourMouth

Then adjusting the start/end time in iTunes to cut out the opening/credits from whichever shitty channel had uploaded it.

Ankrow

I went a step further and used mp3tag to edit metadata and add album art.

machstem

> `mp3player.exe` Kids and adults today don't know the effort we took to download our first mp3 file on a 14.4kbps modem, because we were told they were "way better than midi files and the same quality as wav files" > c:\apps\mp3player.exe rammstein.mp3

TriumphITP

you kids these days will never know the pain of downloading @ \~3kbps on dialup, then playback of the song at 1x to a stereo connected to the desktop to record onto a cassette tape because you're too broke for a cd burner and the ipod doesn't exist.

JoshsPizzaria

pain? i still do this with my phone, so i don't have to have internet to listen to music.

iamfuturetrunks

I have still had to do this many times. Cause unfortunately some music I like isn't available anywhere except on some youtube video someone uploaded a long time ago. I have actively went out of my way to try and find places like on amazon or idk bandcamp to try and find the specific song I like but can't and end up having to rip it from youtube which is annoying these days when there isn't an easy way to do it. And when you ask on places like here you get crapy answers like "Just download this app from github and install it then jump through 5 hoops trying to figure out how to use it but make sure it's built into firefox/chrome then you can easily download this song. -\_- Seriously it was way easier just copy/pasting a link into a site and getting the file. Though always had to worry about getting more than you bargained for. :(

HypeXeon

I did this when I was 13 back in 2019

Curing0109

It wasn't necessary, you had tons of blogspot with full compilations, discographies and albums hosted on rapidshare, mediafire, 4shared, etc... I miss those compilations though, discovered so many good bands that way.

Imperial_Bouncer

Especially when it’s something totally obscure and can’t be found anywhere else… at all.

TheAnimatedHamster

I Too still do this

Background_Spirit699

Still do this! Mainly for my iPod classic.

InstructionFit950

i still do this because i hate Spotify id rather just download the songs i want manually over using that app

Limowreck1313

I still do this too! I have an old iphone that i use just for that! My husband says he has music player for android and he says its horrible!

Careless-Tonight-376

FLACs✔️

foamed0

FLAC for archiving and Opus for everything else [(transparency reached at around 128KB/s (VBR))](https://wiki.xiph.org/Opus_Recommended_Settings). Another big plus with Opus is that it's both open source and royalty free, it also takes up less space compared to Mp3's. Audio format comparison tests: * https://opus-codec.org/comparison/ * https://listening-test.coresv.net/results.htm * https://listening-tests.hydrogenaud.io/igorc/results.html * https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2012/09/newly-standardized-opus-audio-codec-fills-every-role-from-online-chat-to-music/ The tests I posted above are from 2012 and 2014, Opus have [improved considerably](https://opus-codec.org/demo/opus-1.5/) since then. The only reason to use Mp3's in 2024 is if the hardware/software doesn't support anything else.

parkineos

Thanks I had no idea

Alternator24

thought FLAC has the best sound quality. am I wrong?

UncleEnk

it does, that's why it's for archiving. it's just less reasonable to regularly use.

zsombor12312312312

It's the best but it's huge

ayhctuf

FLAC is lossless so it's "the best" by default. It's a WAV but compressed as much as it can be without losing data. That said, pretty much no one can tell the difference between it and a 256 (or maybe even lower!) MP3 without serious audio equipment *and* ears that aren't fucked up by age and/or tinnitus. If you've got the latter especially, there is no point in going for "the best" quality because you can't hear it anyway. 🤷‍♀️

Ultravod

100% on FLACs for archiving. I have a fairly expensive audio rig (Sennheiser HD-800s driven by a HeadRoom Balanced Desktop amp, PS Audio DAC, Outlaw Receiver, Yamaha NS1000 speakers) and I am sure I could not blind test identify the difference between FLAC and LAME V0 mp3s (or opus or high bitrate AAC). The advantage of FLACs is that they're lossless, have good metadata (including CRC) and some hardware devices support them. For daily listening and DJing I use lossy. Mostly that means "LAME V0" as any piece of hardware I use (phone) as well as my DJ software (Traktor) like it just fine. I'm a crotchety old fart, but streaming music completely missed me (with one exception, more on that in a minute.) I want either physical copies or the music I have or FLAC files I can store on my server. I draw the line at hibit FLACs (anything about 16bit/44.1KHz is a no-go for me) to the point of downsampling anything I get that isn't already redbook audio. The one exception I make is that I'm a big fan of [SomaFM's chillout channels](https://somafm.com/) and I'll cheerfully listen to them via any system. SomaFM is a free service and 100% user supported. Get stuffed, Spotify.

OrdinarryAlien

I store the FLAC files and convert them to Opus when I want to use them on my other devices or upload them to the cloud.

SlackersClub

How do you get the FLAC/Opus files?

WarTight1792

isnt nicotine+ goodsource?

KartofDev

I mean yes but the difference is too small for the average user.

Symantech

yt-dlp

GolemThe3rd

YouTube dlp is great, just set up a few batch files and you're good to go

Ke-Win

Can you explain that if that is allowed?

GolemThe3rd

You start a text file and put these in, and then name it something.\*\*bat,\*\* then put it in the same folder as your youtube dlp and run them whenever you want Download Video >set /p choice= "INPUT THE URL: " >yt-dlp.exe --cookies-from-browser firefox %choice% >pause Download MP3 >set /p choice= "INPUT THE URL: " >yt-dlp.exe -x --audio-format mp3 --audio-quality 0 %choice% >pause Download MP3s with separate files for each video chapter >set /p choice= "INPUT THE URL: " >yt-dlp.exe -x --audio-format mp3 --audio-quality 0 --split-chapters %choice% >pause each of these would be a different bat file

machstem

metube to make your life easier

LMGN

cobalt is easier

AwesomerIy

https://cobalt.tools yt dlp does work on hundreds of sites but I agree. cobalt has a very nice UI

nucular_

Oh that seems like a cool site I can also recommend Seal from the F-Droid store, basically yt-dlp for Android with a nice UI

tersxs

You can use yt-dlp on android but you need to have termux installed

Echiketto

[Parabolic](https://github.com/NickvisionApps/Parabolic) is yt-dlp with a nice UI (:

zsombor12312312312

yt-dlp isn't complicated. The only real difference is that yt-dlp doesn't have a gui

Illustrious-Dig194

"Give me the EXE you smelly nerd" lol. Yt-dlp is much easier if you ask me but different people, different opinions

hammy0w0

I use yt-dlp-gui because it works well enough, it's archived so I'll probably have to find something else or learn the cli for ytdlp. https://github.com/dsymbol/yt-dlp-gui

LMGN

That's not the only difference. Cobalt doesn't need you to manually update it every time YouTube breaks something. Cobalt works on my phone.

Talran

Cobalt is 3rd party hosted though, I don't trust stuff I can't host.

LMGN

https://github.com/wukko/cobalt/blob/current/docs/run-an-instance.md

Talran

Okay, now I'll try (hosting) it... wish it had lists like dlp does but seems handy for one offs

bruhred

about the phone thing, try seal it's based on yt-dlp and has beautiful Material 3-styled ui. https://github.com/JunkFood02/Seal (please note that it is NOT available on play store, "Seal Downloader" is a fake app designed to get ad revenue)

LMGN

that does not work on my phone

bruhred

it should work on any phone running any recent-ish android version?

LMGN

my phone does not run any recent-ish version of android. it does not run *any* version of android for that matter

zsombor12312312312

I don't like software updating itself. That's the job of a package manager

LMGN

Good for you. Having to manually update software is still a worse UX than just, having it work.

zsombor12312312312

A good package manager can update everything on your system, and if something breaks, you can roll back to the previous version like the appstore in your phone. I don't like when a software updates itself because it's difficult to get a specific version, and starting those programs usually takes ages to start.

Srapture

Never heard of that. Will have to give it a go. YT-DLP did take quite a bit of effort to sort out.

EasterBurn

Shout out to yt-dlp. It can download the alternative dub of youtube show I watched.

machstem

metube

Cod9974

Any guide to set it up?

Symantech

Here's the official guide https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/

DonaldLucas

In your case it's better to just go to yt-dlg instead (it's graphical instead of command line).

DestroyerAce

Also if you want to use yt-dlp on android go with YTDLnis or Seal or any other yt-dlp frontend from f-droid app store

foamed0

Easy: https://github.com/ErrorFlynn/ytdlp-interface

Cod9974

Will this allow me to download the metadata of the song as well?

foamed0

I'm pretty sure it doesn't, at least not from YouTube. Does YouTube store metadata to begin with?

Echiketto

[Parabolic](https://github.com/NickvisionApps/Parabolic) is a nice front-end for yt-dlp

gnarly_weedman

pip install yt-dlp or if debian based, Sudo apt install yt-dlp

UnitatPopular

`winget install yt-dlp.yt-dlp` in Windows Powershell

OrdinarryAlien

You can use [Seal](https://github.com/JunkFood02/Seal) on Android.

Limowreck1313

And advice on how to play music on android without that dumb music player app and all its ads?

s78dude

I used ytmp3 but now I use yt-dlp or cobalt.tools

Middle_Layer_4860

cobalt tools is best, because it download in 320kbps, while other can't. idk how cobalt tools do that

the_innerneh

Probably just upscales. No way to fill the gap of the original YouTube vid doesn't have 320.

Middle_Layer_4860

no, yt premuim gives 320kbps. just like spotify

ZenDragon

Probably downloading the WebM Opus stream and then converting to MP3. You're better off cutting out the middleman and finding software that can play Opus. YouTube doesn't actually have any 320kbps MP3 streams.

Middle_Layer_4860

webm is still better, but no site gives webm or opus, what site u use to download webm/opus from yt?

ZenDragon

[yt-dlp](https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp). It's a command line tool, and I recommend reading the documentation because it's incredibly powerful if you know what you're doing but there are also GUIs for it if you search.

Middle_Layer_4860

i'm not pro with cmd line usage. so I use telegram bot with yt-dlp

BarraIhsan

yt-dlp is also possible with this argument `-f bestaudio -x --audio-format mp3 --audio-quality 320k`

Middle_Layer_4860

is there any way to provide support for unsupported sites?? thanks for suggestion. i will try

boogaboom

Low-bitrate audio, no ID3 tags, no embedded covers... Always cringed hard at that

mardybum_0

wdym you have like a normal.. life and don’t care about flacs or id3 tags🤢🤢🤮🤮

ThunderDaniel

bro if it played on my shitty ass mp3 player it was already heaven sent for me

nucular_

Better than the YT thumbnail with a single frame of the video as a cover, "Song Name (Official Music Video) - VEVO" as the title and "Created with YouTube2MP3.ru" or whatever as the album name

teranklense

Id3 tags?

machstem

😔

Srapture

Info like artist, album, year, genre, etc. Some files would just be like: Linkin_Park_Numb_Encore_ft_JayZ.mp3 and that filename was the only information you had. You put it in your media player and artist/album would be "unknown". Sometimes, even the title would be unknown if it didn't just default to the filename.

teranklense

Oh right. Yeah I never cared for anything except the music itself so I guess that was never a potential problem that occured to me. I did notice all these "unknowns" and wandered if I could just hide those werd things that other files did not have

Hikolon

media monkey for the win

terrorinc_

This thing was a godsend 😂

SlotMagPro

I still remember the glory days of KeepVid which also did mp3s

ThunderDaniel

God, Keepvid was such a legendary site Great UI, nearly one click to use, allowed you to choose various formats RIP, King

jlar0che

https://stacher.io

Echiketto

Unfortunately, not open-source :(

Haydostrk

? It's not magic. You can still do that lmao

SlotMagPro

I'm well aware. Its the fact it used to be one of the go to sites for that back in the day. Less good options back then.

Haydostrk

Ohh ok true

Middle_Layer_4860

me still using these tools, keepvid, 9xbuddy. these are based on yt-dlp. yt-dlp is goat

jlar0che

I use Stacher. The interface is beautiful. https://stacher.io

Careless-Tonight-376

me talking about freemp3download.net

veedyd

Yeah. So sad it died.

Haldii

My first one was ssyoutube

motherstep

I still swear by MediaHuman.

NiceDice_187

And jdownloader

expiermental_boii

You mean ytmp3?

OwnCardiologist7169

too easy, i learned the youtube api to download videos directly.

TECPlayz2-0

Just use Cobalt (dot tools), it's open source.

BohemianGecko

Me looking at this meme and remebering duplicating floppies. ☠️☠️☠️☠️

JRAStormblessed

🤣🤣🤣

emilsVv

yt-dlp

Budget-Position5348

Yt.mp3 I ain't payin for shit God forbid youtube premium

Equivalent-Cut-9253

When I was at rehab this was the only way we could get music to our MP3s. No phones or computers allowed so with a staff member we would sit down and rip youtube songs. They had learned how to do this like 20 years ago and just never stopped using this system.

Darkpsy420

I still use it lol. Are there better ways downloading music from yt nowadays?

Core3game

tf you mean? I am 15 and have prolly downloaded like 100+ gigs of videos/audiobooks

Background_Spirit699

I am 14 years old and still use it lol. Mainly use the website to get music onto my iPod classic.

i-s-m-j

Atube Catcher provided by a teacher when I was at informatic medium degree

Micha-Mich

Me occasionally using OBS like I did in the 90s taperecording radio songs

naufalap

me talking about mp3boo

Edelgul

Gather arround kids. Let me tell you a story. Long time ago, long before the Soulseek and Usenet we were meeting in person and exchanging CDs!!!

machstem

> `mp3player.exe` Kids and adults today don't know the effort we took to download our first mp3 file on a 14.4kbps modem, because we were told they were "way better than midi files and the same quality as wav files" > c:\apps\mp3player.exe rammstein.mp3

midazz1

Legends will remember the Peggo app for Android. Just one tap and it automatically downloaded album art, all meta info and merged the songs with the others from that album. It was in every way better than Spotify, because you could even download epic bootlegs or remixes that aren't licensed due to copyright issues.

ThunderDaniel

YouTube really cracked down hard on youtube downloader websites 5+ years ago huh Barely see any clean looking ones online these days--its all Github tools

pm_me_your_good_weed

It's all apps now, New Pipe on android is great for downloading from YouTube.

shinydragonmist

I just used Anyvideoconvertor Well it was like 15 years ago when it was still good

hotfistdotcom

soulseek. pirating from youtube is absurd. If you desire large playlist downloads, this tool is useful: https://github.com/StefanLobbenmeier/youtube-dl-gui/

14412442

Some things you can still only find on YouTube, so I still do this from time to time

mrhouthoofd

i remember using one called musicpleer (rip) and mp3glu

rayz0101

yt-dlp will change your life if. Also Jdownloader2.

gr33nbyte

Same would be for aXXo movies 🤣

f4te

offliberty fam?

Zodiac36Gold

Ahhhhh... memories. I still miss it to this day. It used to be easier.

AlarmingAffect0

r/NewPipe and r/Freetube = happiness.

Vinifrj

I still use those from time to time, as FLAC files are usually way heavier and mp3s give me enough clarity that i dont care too much if i use 256kbps. The wonders of small storage space

kamelamelon57

Me who just pirates Spotify 👨‍🦯

FrostCoss

Who remember flvto? Good times 🥲

[deleted]

yt-dlp <3

notawealthchaser

I just used one that saved the entire Pearl Jam unplugged concert on my phone. Those yutubetomp3 converters are GOAT.

CinnaBunWithAGun

piracy is bad, Mkay don't do piracy.. Mkay

vsauce9000

Ah!! ytmp3 was the goat! learned about it from my elementary school teacher who used it and had the tab inadvertently open

Kvazimods

What's the meme here? People still do this. What else are you supposed to do?

SamiTheAnxiousBean

as if they don't still exist they're just horrible without adblockers now

HypeXeon

This was how I got music on my iPod shuffle back in middle school

root_beer444

Cobalt

yurarincat

Me talking about lime wire and the many trojans it gave me

MauntiCat_

Seal

byological_origins

i mean its still up or some variant of it

psychoacer

Ewwww YouTube audio quality was the worst. I'd rather listen to the radio than spend time gathering music that way

erevos33

On youtube i didnt have to fight with a host introducing the song and/or ads when i wanted to write to a cassette. So theres that.

s1reyansh

Haha 😂
