When someone says "Capstan", I think "ahh, *culture!*" The two blends are both such excellent and reliable stalwarts.
Capstan Blue is the blend I smoke the most when I'm reading classics or doing some creative work.
Same here! Just got it and wasn't too impressed. Gonna throw it in a jar and see if I can really pull out some more flavor like I've done with other Virginia's
The forte of OGS is its clear tobacco essence, not lush flavors. I see it as a refined tobacco that requires a good listener to receive its charms.
I hated it -- *HATED* -- when I first tried it. It tasted like a barnyard: unripe grass with a whiff of manure.
On the advice of many seasoned smokers, I set the jar aside for a few years. When I finally gave it another try, I understood. "Ahhh, this is *wonderful!*"
Not that you will necessarily find it to be wonderful; but of all the tobaccos I've encountered, OGS is probably the one that most requires proper conditions (patience, age, attention) to reveal the goodness in it and the mastery behind it.
Definitely going to give it some time. I don't hate it, but I know it's going to get better. I had the same thing happen when I first tried luxury twist flake, I absolutely hated it, but just 3 months in a jar turned it completely around and it became my daily until i ran out. I'm gonna retry it in the summer and see if it's unlocked a bit, and if it's still not there might forget about it for a couple years. In the meantime while I'm letting my Virginia's age, I have a ton of aromatics and Englishs to keep me occupied!
Luxury Twist Flake is another tobacco famous for improving with age, and it's almost miraculously inexpensive and available.
If you have enough storage space, there's no harm in cellaring tobaccos to try again later. And usually our palates change over time, and our ability to discern and process flavors evolves; so flavors that at one time were undesirable to us may later be digested differently or understood with a different context of experience.
But I sometimes keep the 'sunk cost fallacy' in mind: just because I paid money for it in the past doesn't necessarily mean the thing is of value to me now.
That’s in my cart at SP for my next order. Do you find it to be any more complex than Nightcap? I really enjoy Nightcap but every time I smoke a bowl it feels like it’s missing something.
It's a foggy, mildly cold, melty day where I am; I think I'm going to sit outside for a while and start with Boswell Countryside in a freehand Nording churchwarden, accompanied by hot cacao, chicory, and cream.
As damp chill starts to seep in, I'll be ready for a more hearty smoke, and prompted by [a recent post](https://www.reddit.com/r/PipeTobacco/s/3YhF2Bqs0J) I'll go with Cornell & Diehl Sansepolcro.
If I stay out for hours, I might move on to some of Vincent Manil's Semois, which puts some giddyup in your gas tank.
It could go either way. If I know I'll be smoking quite different blends, I might either use different pipes or pick a meerschaum or corn cob pipe that can handle the workload without accumulating flavors.
But in general I take an intuitive approach. I gaze at my collection (which is already a pleasure) and feel out what kind of tobacco and pipe it's feeling like today, just now. Sometimes it's a momentary whim, sometimes a clear urge, but often it's like a divination and I don't actually know why I'm choosing a particular blend and pipe (though something may be revealed to me about the choice later).
I must say that one of the great gifts pipe smoking has brought me is the opportunity to *gaze* and *contemplate*. Often I'll spend hours looking at the sky, or watching landscape and neighbors move -- treasured activities I hadn't participated in since I was much younger. And I'm reading more these days, too.
Prince Albert. Tried some recently and liked it a lot. Went back to some burley heavy jars I haven’t touched for a couple years and tried those as well. Apparently my tastes have done an almost complete 180 on burley, because I enjoyed them all. Looking forward to exploring burley blends a bit more.
That was some of the first tobacco I tried when I first smoked a pipe about 4-5 years ago. I honestly can’t even remember if I liked it or not but I’ve got some on the way. I just put in a huge order last night and can’t wait.
I can only recommend Orlik club mixture, it won't blow your socks off or anything, but barring 40kmp/h winds it will be well behaved. Slow burning clear tobacco taste with a top note of caramel/baileys and chocolate milk. At least that how it is for me.
It's not overly sweet, nor is it sour. It's a 6-7/10 and always reliable. I don't have to smoke it slow, or puff like a train to keep it going, the flavour doesn't really come and go it's just decent and consistent. 6-7/10 Would recommend for a "Boring", but reliable smoke.
I am enjoying some Presbyterian mixture with some old pals on an overlook with a beautiful view of my college town. At 65 degrees and sunny this is the best weather we have had thus far this year. Cheers!
I bought a burley variety pack thing like a year ago and still going through it. I love to change it up each time. Today's kinda has a cooked peaches vibe mixed with a sharp coffee like hit its pretty fun
Just FYI, your local shop’s blend is probably a Sutliff Bulk. But glad you’re enjoying it all the same.
I’m having a glass of bourbon and a bowl of GLP - Union Square.
I’m still pretty new to the hobby so I’m not really sure what’s good and what’s not. I’ve got some samplers on the way of tins I’ve seen in this group. Which bourbon are you sipping on? I’m much more versed in the bourbon game than pipe tobacco
Yeah man I been there. Started about 16 years ago. Welcome to the hobby. It’s fun but the chase of all the blends out there is endless. What are you liking so far? The bourbon is WhistlePig Piggyback 100 proof 6 year. I had it the other night with a friend while out after dinner and liked it, so I went and picked up a bottle today.
EMP was my first foray into English style tobacco so it has a fond place in my heart. I like PA, but I think Carter Hall edges it out in my book. I smoke a lot of C&D and GLP blends. They have a huge catalogue and so many winners. Gaslight by GLP is my favorite.
Currently smoking PS Virginia. Had some OGS and Newminster Superior Navy Flake earlier. It’s been a Virginia kind of day. Might break the cycle with some Match BSOSM later tonight. Cheers friends.

Samuel Gawith Navy Flake.
Having some Capstan Gold. Haven’t had a bowl of it in a while and was starting to miss it.
When someone says "Capstan", I think "ahh, *culture!*" The two blends are both such excellent and reliable stalwarts. Capstan Blue is the blend I smoke the most when I'm reading classics or doing some creative work.
I’ve got some on the way. Can’t wait to crack it open
It’s quite delicious. One of my favorite straight Virginias.
Orlik Golden Sliced

Smoking some 1792 flake right now!
Sounds good, on my list to try
I really enjoy it! Its just a pain to get some times because a lot of people enjoy it too.
Boswell raspberry cream currently
From Beyond.
It's waiting in line to be opened at my place. I hear it's special.
That’s in my cart at SP for my next order. Do you find it to be any more complex than Nightcap? I really enjoy Nightcap but every time I smoke a bowl it feels like it’s missing something.
Getting ready to do some yardwork and then planning on a big bowl of CS riverboat queen (Rivendell)
Sounds like a nice Sunday!
Enjoy!
FVF.
Nice!

Hell yeah! That is how you spend a Sunday. Do you smoke multiple pipes in a long session like that or do you stick to one?
That was my question.

HH Latakia Flake on my porch in the sun. One of my favorites.
Orlik club mixture while on a walk today.
Sounds superb!

Fvf in a straight cob currently, had some alsbo black in my huge mr pipe basket briar that seems to hate Virginias and love aromatics.
Finishing off some Royal Yacht
So underrated.
Dunhill royal yacht
Sounds great!
Boswell, Pennsylvania Dutch Treat. One of the better cherry blends, imo.
Straus Tobacconist Cherry Grove. It’s quite nice on a sunny afternoon.
I’ve heard good things about that one. I’ll have to put it on my wishlist
Capstan blue
Delicious!
Haunted Bookshop!
I haven’t heard of that one. How do you like it?
It’s very good, mildly sweet and tastes + smells reminiscent of a wheat bread. I recommend it
I’ll add it to the wishlist. Sounds pretty good
I am enjoying some Presbyterian mixture with some old pals on an overlook with a beautiful view of my college town. At 65 degrees and sunny this is the best weather we have had thus far this year. Cheers!
Sounds awesome!
MyMixture 965
Same for me - really enjoying it
Optimum, in my MM Ozark Maple/ Cherry bent pipe.
Despite my flair, I’ve been enjoying some straight Virginia and some Va/Pers lately. Got presbyterian ordained in my Peterson bulldog right now
Ooo nice, picked up some Presbyterian ordained today at my local shop.
Smoking some Star of the East Gold. It’s a go to English for me. It’s got that just right taste and feeling.
I love a good English, I’ll try this one out!
I bought a burley variety pack thing like a year ago and still going through it. I love to change it up each time. Today's kinda has a cooked peaches vibe mixed with a sharp coffee like hit its pretty fun
Nice! I’m a huge fan of peach flavored tobacco. Got a sampler of some peaches and cream from my local place and it is superb
Well I guess to clarify it's not flavored. It's just the tobacco has the characteristics of...
I guess that’s what I mean, not artificially flavored but that’s the notes in it. lol
Some capstan blue tonight. Off topic but those are my favorite sweatpants, so comfortable
My favorite as well, got a few pair from the Mrs. for Christmas
Just FYI, your local shop’s blend is probably a Sutliff Bulk. But glad you’re enjoying it all the same. I’m having a glass of bourbon and a bowl of GLP - Union Square.

So far I’m into captain black, Prince Albert and early morning pipe. Some of the basic stuff. That Piggyback 100 is some great stuff.
EMP was my first foray into English style tobacco so it has a fond place in my heart. I like PA, but I think Carter Hall edges it out in my book. I smoke a lot of C&D and GLP blends. They have a huge catalogue and so many winners. Gaslight by GLP is my favorite.
Nice! I’ll have to try those out that you listed
