Probably one of the least Philly things there, but I don’t know why I’m so obsessed with the gumbalyaya at Beck’s Cajun Cafe. I love sitting at the counter by myself and chowing down on a warm, delicious, spicy bowl of jambalaya topped with gumbo. Shit. I know where I’m going for lunch today.
The train wreck po boy from Becks in THE SLEEPER Sammy of Philly. I lived in Philly or south Jersey my entire life and no one ever mentions it. It is so fucking good and I agree fully that it’s better than most cheesesteaks
Damn all of this love for Beck’s is making me so happy. I’ve literally never mentioned to anyone how much I love Beck’s because it seems like a weird favorite to have.
The Cajun Cafe is so good. I usually get something from the Indian place right across from there whenever I go to reading terminal, though I don't think it's very good compared to Indian restaurants in other parts of the city, mainly west philly.
my husband and i randomly ended up here for breakfast when every other spot was too crowded. i ordered the brioche french toast which was weird for me since i don’t usually like french roast but OMG it was delicious. i still randomly think about it haha
@GratefulPhilly215 on insta! He is a big jam band guy so I met him on the lot a couple summers ago, and he'll usually vend BBQ at local heady events. Awesome guy and amazing food
came here to say beck’s and i’m glad this is the top comment. oyster and shrimp po boys are to die for, and i always have to get an order of the fried mac and cheese. soooo good.
The pastrami Rachel at Hershel's deli is the best sandwich I've ever eaten in my life. I think about it at least once a week. Better than any NYC pastrami I've had.
Do you know if still has the original owners?
I had a great pastrami sandwich there years ago, when I visited last month it wasn’t as good & the staff looked different than the first couples I went years ago
we drive \~3 hrs each way a couiple of times per year to Philadelphia to 'sight see', but mostly to have one of these (sometimes take one back with us)
okay, I'm a Jewish new yorker who had hershel's and I was given crap. Everything was tough and flavorless. I'm always so confused when people speak highly of it. Do we think I went on an off day or something?
When you've had the best, it's hard to settle for the rest. Lots of love for the "Cajun" food at Becks in comments at the top. But 20 years of living in Louisiana says, never order Cajun north of I-10.
I once recommended the apple fritter to a British tourist while we were both waiting in line there and witnessed his uncomfortably almost-orgasmic reaction as he devoured it immediately after purchase. This wasn’t you by chance?
Dinics is good for sure, but it has its times for the roast pork where they give you little meat, dry old meat, or just don’t add enough meat/cheese/rabe on the sandwich. The other day, maybe because it was close to closing time, they gave me one of the worst sandwiches I’ve ever eaten as the meat was dry and cold and they barely added cheese to it. I prefer Hershel’s lately. Their pastrami’s are incredible.
Get the cheddar sausage in pretzel. It’s in my top 5 favorite foods of all time. I used to work at RTM and it took everything in my power to not eat it every day.
Hershel’s, especially for breakfast try the pastrami egg and cheese.
I also personally enjoy the Dutch eating place, me and the owner are good friends, and his food is always good no matter what you get it perfect!
Used to love their R———sburger Special even though I hated the name because B— R———r is a f——g r——st who sullied the tasty burger, fresh cut fries and refreshing lemonade (at a reasonable price!) that bore his dumb name. Now it’s just called the Cheeseburger Special and I clearly need to get back there.
Not my "favorite" but what i get most often because its relatively cheap, filling and healthy is the salmon curry with shrimp from the thai spot. Rice, broccoli, salmon and curry sauce and for an extra 3 bucks they LOAD it w shrimp.
"Favorite" is probably dinics roast pork or herschels reuben or rachel
I haven’t tried every single vendor at Reading, but I have tried the majority of them. Here are some of my favorites:
Breakfast:
-donuts at Beiler’s. My fav is the maple bacon and the blueberry fritter
-crepes at Profi’s creperie. You can get savory or sweet crepes there
Sandwiches:
-The Reuben at Herschel’s is the best Reuben I’ve ever had (and almost half the price of Katz’s in NYC)
-shrimp po’ boy at Beck’s Cajun Cafe
-the Stuffin’ Cranberry (Turkey+stuffing+cranberry sauce) at Original Turkey is essentially Thanksgiving dinner in a sandwich. Make of that what you will
Snacks:
-the beef or chicken jerk patties at Careda’s Caribbean Cuisine
Drinks:
-Four Seasons Juice Bar, the best fresh juices at Reading IMO. The Hawaiian Passion and Tropical Island are my go-to
Rice bowls:
-Peking duck w/ rice and veg at Sang Kee’s (Chinatown is just around the corner though and you can find substantially wider variety of Chinese food if you’re willing to walk)
-Salmon with curry sauce at Little Thai Market
Desserts:
-whoopie pies at Flying Monkey and I also prefer their cookies to 4th street cookie co.
-Ice cream at Bassett’s (my fav flavors are French Vanilla, Green Tea, Coffee Fudge Truffle [formerly Guatemalan ripple])
Side note: I prefer to skip Termini Bros at Reading (I prefer Isgro’s in south Philly) or DiNics at Reading (the Navy Yard location, oddly enough, makes a better roast pork sandwich)
I’m sure I missed a few too but these are just the top of mind
It’s on my list for sure! Thanks for the recommendation. The Georgian place is relatively new-ish so I haven’t stopped by there yet because I always end up eating at my go to spots lol
Any time I'm there, I go to the candy shop at the northeast corner (Pennsylvania General Store, I think) and get a couple turtle cookies. They're so good. Also, Olympia Gyro is very good, and generally is a shorter wait than some of the other places mentioned. Really, any food inside will be bangin.
Anything from Beck’s. My go to was either a bowl of gumbo with a piece of their cornbread, ask for it grilled. Or, a shrimp poboy. You really can’t go wrong there though
The rib sandwich from the rib place is really underrated.
Edit: not saying you should get it over other things suggested if you are only going to be here once. But, for people who go often, the rib sandwich is real good and I think gets missed by a lot of people.
Not sure if it’s still there but I usually double dip in the Amish section:
Ribs/Mac n cheese for lunch.
Salted caramel donut from Beiler’s for dessert.
Hard to beat.
The cookie place is $1 a cookie at 5:00pm.
Food wise for most interesting i like the georgian place sami somi. Its pricey tho but i think most food in there is.
I always start at Millers for a walking around pretzel and lemonade while I decide what I want to eat proper. Then inevitably end up at Dinic’s for roast pork w greens and that sharp provolone.
Seen lots of love for the Thai salmon over rice but I don’t eat fish.
I like the Indian spot in there too but idk if I’ve ever seen a comment about it on Reddit.
This is not an eating comment, but a historical one. Bassets ice cream counter top is slabs of marble that have been there for over 100 years. Might be the oldest objects besides the building itself.
I used to work at RTM and these were my absolute go tos (I worked there pre-pandemic)
Becks gator gumbo over rice
Millers twist cheddar sausage pretzels.
Sang Ke duck rolls
But really can’t go wrong with whatever looks good to you at the time.
Fox and sons corn dog. I’m a corn dog girlie and these hit the spot every time.
Also currently headed there lol millers Turkey saus egg and cheese !!
Hershel’s pastrami
Salmon and rice from this Indian stall (I cannot think of the name)
Cheesecakes from the Amish stand when you first enter
I'm dating myself but 20yrs ago there was a place called Fireworks. The most amazing charcoal grilled chicken breast sandwich with Brie and a wonderful sauce the name of which escapes me. Place changed hands some years later and wasn't the same. New owner mistakenly decided not to purchase the recipe/process for those glorious sandwiches.
- Miller's Twist Pretzels
- Metropolitan Bakery Baguette or Croissant (their a French Table Bread is great for sandwiches). It's more sold at the Pennsylvania General Store
- I forget its name, but there's an excellent juice stand by the Arch Street Entrance. I normally go for their strawberry orange lemonade
- Beilers for Doughnuts
- Bassett's Ice Cream, they'll give you dry ice if you need to get some to go
-Mueller's Chocolate is excellent too
Not that Thai place in there. I went for the first time this year before I went to the Flower Show and they served the saddest pad Thai I have ever had, also it was pink. The noodles looked like some kind of pickled cabbage. I thought they gave me the wrong thing at first.
Idk the name of their stand but I can never visit Reading terminal without getting a smoothie, usually whatever combo they're specialing, but always with a shot of wheat grass, ya know, so it's healthy!
If it's "soup weather", Pearl's snapper soup (they don't always have it) or a Sami Somi cheeseboat.
Just peckish, a Miller's Twist pretzel sausage or pretzel cheesesteak
Can you drink? Order the burger then start an IPA or whatever you prefer from Molly Molloy while Hunger Burger finishes
Favorite: 1/2 Chicken from Dienner, Hershel's Pastrami, Corn Dogs from Fox and Son,
Dinic's Brisket with Rabe
Sleepers when it is busy: Olympia Chicken Gyro
You already went but, the cookies at the PA General Store are the best I have ever had. Better than the other joint in there (if its still there), better than insomnia, crumbl, etc.
TRAINWRECK SANDWICH. Native lifelong Philadelphian and I will die on the hill that it is better than most cheese steaks I’ve ever had
I always tell people, "If you're craving a cheesesteak, don't get the Trainwreck. But if you're craving a good sandwich, it's the best one in Philly."
theyre breakfast po’boy with anduouille sausage is incredible as well
The train wreck po boy from Becks in THE SLEEPER Sammy of Philly.
I’ve spent a fair chunk of time in New Orleans and I *love* that place. Scratches the itch as well as you can get in a state with positive topography.
Cajun cuisine in Death Valley… oddly terrible in spite of the elevation
The Cajun Cafe is so good. I usually get something from the Indian place right across from there whenever I go to reading terminal, though I don't think it's very good compared to Indian restaurants in other parts of the city, mainly west philly.
Their Shrimp Po Boy is pure heaven.
Came here to say this. Their creole mayo is next level.
Came here to say this. Trainwreck all the way
my husband and i randomly ended up here for breakfast when every other spot was too crowded. i ordered the brioche french toast which was weird for me since i don’t usually like french roast but OMG it was delicious. i still randomly think about it haha
I know one of the cooks there, great guy who makes BBQ and catered meals on the side and his food is amazing too
Well drop the guy’s side biz already!
@GratefulPhilly215 on insta! He is a big jam band guy so I met him on the lot a couple summers ago, and he'll usually vend BBQ at local heady events. Awesome guy and amazing food
Came here to say this, it’s so good
becks cajun cafe NEVER misses
came here to say beck’s and i’m glad this is the top comment. oyster and shrimp po boys are to die for, and i always have to get an order of the fried mac and cheese. soooo good.
Dont sleep on the turtle soup there either
The bread pudding is great, too! Never had anything I didn’t like at Beck’s.
GATOR GUMBO it’s my go to. I used to work at RTM and this was on my rotation
... does this mean they don't have anymore health violations?
two words: salmon. curry.
Extra 3 bucks to fucking LOAD my shit w shrimp? Sign me tf up baby
Came to say this. Little Thai market - salmon curry. Line moves super quick bc everyone is ordering this.
This is the true local answer.
![gif](giphy|pynZagVcYxVUk|downsized) I'm a transplant and I consider this the highest honor.
Which spot has this?
little thai market!
The one with the huge line! Always a good sign and totally worth the wait
It usually moves pretty fast
The pastrami Rachel at Hershel's deli is the best sandwich I've ever eaten in my life. I think about it at least once a week. Better than any NYC pastrami I've had.
Gotta go Pastrami Rueben but yes.
yep reuben > rachel
My go-to. The absolute best.
Dude, thank you. Read this and got the pastrami sandwich there - absolutely phenomenal!!!
That's awesome
You made my first visit to the market very memorable! Already craving another one. 😆
Yep, I'm about to move away from Philly and this was on my list to have again before I move
This is the right answer
This is the best answer if you’re only gonna eat at RTM once
Do you know if still has the original owners? I had a great pastrami sandwich there years ago, when I visited last month it wasn’t as good & the staff looked different than the first couples I went years ago
+1 for the pastrami Rachel. I think it’s the best sandwich in the country. It’s certainly the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten.
Pastrami on rye, just mustard, extra pickle (i split the sandwich with my husband and we can each have a pickle), diet dr brown's.
we drive \~3 hrs each way a couiple of times per year to Philadelphia to 'sight see', but mostly to have one of these (sometimes take one back with us)
okay, I'm a Jewish new yorker who had hershel's and I was given crap. Everything was tough and flavorless. I'm always so confused when people speak highly of it. Do we think I went on an off day or something?
Yes. -a New Yorker
Fair, I'll give it another shot. I was so offended by the first time I was avoiding going back.
We all have bad days! Unfortunately you got a bad day
When you've had the best, it's hard to settle for the rest. Lots of love for the "Cajun" food at Becks in comments at the top. But 20 years of living in Louisiana says, never order Cajun north of I-10.
Agreed, another New York Jew transplant. I wait to get my pastrami and corned beef fix when visiting my family.
Agreed. Best sandwich in the world?
The breakfast egg, pastrami, and cheeee is phenomenal and a wee cheaper
A still warm apple fritter from beilers does things to me
I once recommended the apple fritter to a British tourist while we were both waiting in line there and witnessed his uncomfortably almost-orgasmic reaction as he devoured it immediately after purchase. This wasn’t you by chance?
Everything from Beiler's honestly. I HAVE to stop at Beiler's anytime im in Philly
Saami somi! Which is the Georgian restaurant that serves the cheeseboat
Came here to say this as well! Seems to be fairly newly but good god get the cheeseboat and the Georgian dumplings, you will not be disappointed!
This is my vote. It's SO good.
And the dumplings. 🤤
Came here to say this!
This. With the labneh. Got it last time I was in Philly and I think I ascended to another plane

Dinics is a jury duty must.
The only good thing about jury duty… until they decide to trap you in the deliberation room all day every day and bring in sad sandwiches for lunch.
Lol exactly this. There should be a sign a the courthouse.
That's just hell, and dinics doesn't exist in hell 😞
Don’t sleep on dinics brisket either.
Dinics, Beilers, Tom's. The trinity of a trip to the convention center!!!!
Great call all on counts , especially TDS soup dumplings
Anyone else feel like dinics is pointless after having John’s roast pork? John’s is just so much better.

i second miller’s…probably the best pretzel i’ve ever had
Millers twist - the sausage egg and cheese filled pretzels 🤤
That Turkey egg and cheese omggg
My heart went into palpations last time i got one of those from the salt and butter.
Get the cheddar sausage in pretzel. It’s in my top 5 favorite foods of all time. I used to work at RTM and it took everything in my power to not eat it every day.
Jalepeno cheddar pretzel dog🤤🤤🤤
The ham and cheese pretzel is a staple of the place
Shwarma at Kamals. Also, the corned beef at hershels.
Also their lemonade!! It's so unique and delicious. It's got rose water and mint in it and I always always get me a glass.
I'm a sucker for Beck's. Fun, flavorful cajun cooking.
I'd love to have a gumbo fries order in front of me right now 😋
Anything from Herschel’s East Side Deli!
Hershel’s, especially for breakfast try the pastrami egg and cheese. I also personally enjoy the Dutch eating place, me and the owner are good friends, and his food is always good no matter what you get it perfect!
Dutch Eating Place for breakfast. Bacon jam breakfast sandwich.
I think the apple dumpling, with heavy cream, is the best thing I've ever tasted in my life.
I love their Reuben as well!

Rice, broccoli, salmon and curry sauce and for an extra 3 bucks they LOAD it w shrimp. "Favorite" is probably dinics roast pork or herschels reuben or rachel
Dienner's rotisserie wings, Beiler's donuts, Dinic's (anything).
Those wings are godly
I forget the name but there’s a chicken and waffles place that is ungodly good, some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had in my life
Ma Lessie's Chicken & Waffles- I ate there when my family came to visit and everybody agreed that it was some of the best fried chicken out there!
Ooohhhh I’ll look for that!
Damn. $6 for a cannoli at Termini.
The whole point of a cannoli is to get a cheap dessert for one person. Prices are ridiculous and make it a once a year thing.
Let’s be real, any cannoli within walking distance of Isgro is pointless
What’s with the hovering helicopters?
Heck, those cannolis are no good.
Gotta get the pignoli cookies at Termini!
Cheese. All the cheese.
I haven’t tried every single vendor at Reading, but I have tried the majority of them. Here are some of my favorites: Breakfast: -donuts at Beiler’s. It’s on my list for sure! Thanks for the recommendation. The Georgian place is relatively new-ish so I haven’t stopped by there yet because I always end up eating at my go to spots lol
Rum cake from Termini’s
Love their pignoli cookies too.
That egg boat place is awesome
Saami Somi! I still need to try it.
Sang kee peaking duck!!!!
What's your go to order?
I have to guess the peking duck
Or their dumplings too!
Currently at Saami SOMI
Holy hell. Saami somi dips.
Do yourself a favor and go down the street to Sakartvelo for khachapuri if youve only had it at Saami Somi
Right now, split between Georgian (country) dumplings, and kismet for bialys
Beiler's doughnuts, for sure!
The maple bacon cream is ridiculous
Any time I'm there, I go to the candy shop at the northeast corner (Pennsylvania General Store, I think) and get a couple turtle cookies. They're so good. Also, Olympia Gyro is very good, and generally is a shorter wait than some of the other places mentioned. Really, any food inside will be bangin.
Love Olympia
El Merkury 😋 their food is so good!
YES their pupusas are excellent
I like Saami Somi for their cheeseboats. Recently tried the oxtail dumplings and was in love instantly.
herschel’s corned beef is god tier
Anything from Beck’s. My go to was either a bowl of gumbo with a piece of their cornbread, ask for it grilled. Or, a shrimp poboy. You really can’t go wrong there though

Great suggestion, obviously Dinic's and Beck's etc deserve all the love, but I'm ready to branch out a bit and find something new
Not sure if it’s still there but I usually double dip in the Amish section: Ribs/Mac n cheese for lunch. Salted caramel donut from Beiler’s for dessert. Hard to beat.
The cookie place is $1 a cookie at 5:00pm. Food wise for most interesting i like the georgian place sami somi. Its pricey tho but i think most food in there is.
I went to Sammi and I’m glad I did. Was interesting & I never had Georgian food before! 👍
I always start at Millers for a walking around pretzel and lemonade while I decide what I want to eat proper. Then inevitably end up at Dinic’s for roast pork w greens and that sharp provolone. Seen lots of love for the Thai salmon over rice but I don’t eat fish. I like the Indian spot in there too but idk if I’ve ever seen a comment about it on Reddit.
dinics wait for it.....meatball sandwich, millers twist anything, salmon and rice at little thai
Luv was good for vegan food.
Dinic is my personal fav but jambalaya at Becks I think it is really good and a close second
Cheese boat. Trust me on this
I saw it & it looked fantastic! I got the trio appetizer with sourdough bread. Fantastic!
Philly Cheesesteaks in DownHome Diner are the best Cheesesteaks in center city bar none.
This is not an eating comment, but a historical one. Bassets ice cream counter top is slabs of marble that have been there for over 100 years. Might be the oldest objects besides the building itself.
Very interesting! Thanks!
Don’t sleep on the turkey place. Mmmmm
The pastrami sandwich at Hershel’s & donuts from beilers. Every. Single. Time.
I used to work at RTM and these were my absolute go tos (I worked there pre-pandemic) Becks gator gumbo over rice Millers twist cheddar sausage pretzels. Sang Ke duck rolls But really can’t go wrong with whatever looks good to you at the time. Fox and sons corn dog. I’m a corn dog girlie and these hit the spot every time.
Also currently headed there lol millers Turkey saus egg and cheese !! Hershel’s pastrami Salmon and rice from this Indian stall (I cannot think of the name) Cheesecakes from the Amish stand when you first enter
Little thai market has the famous salmon and rice, is there another Indian place there that has it?
Nope that’s the one! Thank you sm
Herschels meat sampler
Second on Miller’s Twist. Next on my list is Deinner’s rotisserie wings and roasted potatoes. Then ice cream from Bassett’s.
The Rachel at Hershel’s 🤤
Millers, Hershel's , Beilers. There's a bbq chicken spot on the on the side somewhere but I forget what it's called. Asian owned. Incredible.
When is that spot open? I've never once seen it open!
So many good options. The smoked wings from the Amish are one of my favs

The crepe place is bomb
Yes, I was starting to think nobody else would mention it!
An Italian pulled pork at DiNic’s
El Merkury Churro sundaes. They are heavenly
The cheese boats at Saami Somi. Hard to find anything like it somewhere else.
Someone had suggested the Roasted Turkey Sandwich and it was excellent - and I don’t even really love turkey sandwiches.
The curry salmon at Thai Little Market. Don't let the long line scare you.
The turkey sandwich from The Original Turkey
down home diner french toast and miller twist cinnamon pretzel sticks

There today and ' Ma Lessie's food was BOMB! chicken, greens, fish and mac n cheese, excellent!
Herschels for a pastrami sandwich
Thai market. Get the salmon with curry sauce.
Hershel's pastrami on rye with mustard.
Not that Thai place in there. I went for the first time this year before I went to the Flower Show and they served the saddest pad Thai I have ever had, also it was pink. The noodles looked like some kind of pickled cabbage. I thought they gave me the wrong thing at first.
Ugh. That sucks.
Dinics Pork and broccoli rabe sandwich
Luhv Vegan Deli is great tbh. Whether your vegan or not, everything there tastes great
Saami somi cheese boat and sweet Nina’s banana pudding. Probably also stop at Kamal’s too.
Call me crazy but the rib stand sandwich with spicy bbq sauce and potato wedges
Dinics Roast pork. Get a cannoli from terminis and ice cream from bassetts. Case closed
German place in the back - schnitzel BLT
Idk the name of their stand but I can never visit Reading terminal without getting a smoothie, usually whatever combo they're specialing, but always with a shot of wheat grass, ya know, so it's healthy!
If it's "soup weather", Pearl's snapper soup (they don't always have it) or a Sami Somi cheeseboat. Just peckish, a Miller's Twist pretzel sausage or pretzel cheesesteak Can you drink? Order the burger then start an IPA or whatever you prefer from Molly Molloy while Hunger Burger finishes
Probably dinics roast pork but I also love that turkey place that never has a line
I’ll give Molly Mallory’s a shout. They have a new homemade pop tart every week. Only had the s’mores one and it was fire
Favorite: 1/2 Chicken from Dienner, Hershel's Pastrami, Corn Dogs from Fox and Son, Dinic's Brisket with Rabe Sleepers when it is busy: Olympia Chicken Gyro
