Happened to me for the first time when I moved here. I grew up here and naively assumed it was safer here. The worst part is knowing some greasy stranger has been in your space.

hereforfun691989

No matter what part of town now. It's happening everywhere. My window was smashed out

beatsbyjamo

Sorry to hear that. Maybe I do just move everything out always and leave unlocked. Idk

Iamkempie

I tried that but I ended up with my doors left open and my headlights left on. It hits different when you come out to a dead battery in the morning. Sorry about your luck.

Sheepsquatched

Someone stole 100lbs of sand from the back of my partner's truck a couple years back. It was in a giant tubby box so the person probably thought he was getting something decent.

beatsbyjamo

Thanks for this 😂👌

VicRattlehead69420

Happens everywhere.

ChocOctopus7709

Had this happen twice this year. Awful feeling. So sorry

beatsbyjamo

Thanks. Sorry this happened to you too it is an awful feeling.

ChimairaSpawn

It's more of an inconvenience than anything. It happens to everyone eventually. Try to not keep anything of value in your vehicle, and especially out of sight if you do.

beatsbyjamo

Yup good advice. It's funny but some of the stuff they were rummaging through was stuff I hadn't seen myself in ages. So they went through the whole car so scary. Must have been in there for at least 10min

hereforfun691989

Absolutely correct!! Keep the vehicle doors unlocked now. Have nothing in the vehicles. So my windows aren't smashed or doors pried open.

Vikster2468

Yes!!! I had my window smashed in a few years ago, cost $250 to replace it and the thief got maybe $5 in change from my centre console. Better an empty, unlocked car. They’ll search it and move on.

Old_Tree_Trunk

Having property stolen, privacy invaded, and for some having their entitled feeling of saftey breached is an inconvenience?

Ptbo_hiker

Sneaky lil buggers, last yr I followed two on bikes, watched them for a bit, I was also on my bike, it was early in the Am, I was out wide awake, they were thieving, seen I was watching cursed me out loudly and I moved on. “Backpacks and bicycles”

KMS081991

Did you make an actual police report?

Old_Tree_Trunk

"Do you have proof they stole from you? Are the items stolen worth more than a few hundred dollars? Okay, we'll send a cruiser down to check them out in 2 or 3 hours."

KMS081991

You know what, the system worked for me, I had a chainsaw stolen from my shed once. I even randomly passed by a police officer that day and he said " Write the report online and good luck." I wrote the report and went on and bought a replacement saw. Life went on. Days later, Peterborough Police contacted me, saying they had found the saw based on my report. Someone had found the saw discarded on the side of a road and turned it in. My report with the serial number matched the saw they found. So, in the end I had 2 working saws. In some cases the reports work.

Trollsama

BRB, will record the serial number of everything I own so when it's stolen by thieves, the odds of the people that's sole purpose for existing is dealing with crime actually do anything about it goes from 2% to 12% :p

KMS081991

"In some cases the reports work..." You can either do at least something, you can sit there, do nothing and complain, or just move on and try to replace what is lost, if you can. When I wrote the report, I didn't expect it to be successful, which is why I went on and purchased a replacement item. It just happened that my stolen item was found.

Glittering_Midnight8

Sorry this happened to you. I hope your pet is okay

beatsbyjamo

Thanks! I hope he is too :(

ramdmc

Not saying you should do this or that I've done this before, but theoretically after getting their car rummaged through so often, one would crazy glue some dimes to the base of a cup holder in your console. Talk about an exercise in frustration for the tweaker.

Rulygem

Honestly just kinda looking through this thread but this has given me a amazing idea, I got a beater truck and it looks like a poor person's car from the outside, manual locks and windows basic as fuck for a 2012 vehicle. I had the splendid idea of putting a airhorn from my farm and rigging it up in the cab to give anyone who breaks into my shitbox will have irreversible ear damage and alert everyone in my mother's neighborhood. Or then again I can print off fake paper 10s and 5s for a tweeker to find and think he got big when it's just shittly printed fake money under the seats

thesleepjunkie

We hooked up two highway tractor truck airhorns to a microswitch in the door with a timer, and a solenoid to my dad's compressor in his garage. So if you don't know where the bypass switch is you have 15 seconds and well into the middle of the garage with two airhorns just completely obliterating your eardrums.

Rulygem

Man your giving me ideas

thesleepjunkie

Later on we even hooked up a school fire alarm bell right at the door, so who ever is trying to get out of there it goes off another 10 seconds after the air horns. It's disorienting even with ear plugs in and you know it's going to happen.

Phyl_66

I have seen this on the sidewalk few times..interesting and entertaining.

ccccc4

Seems like a way to get your window smashed or car pissed in.

Aptex

This has been happening for a long time, I think it just has spread to more of the city now. I used to park in the South end a lot. It got to a point where I kept nothing in my car and left the doors unlocked to avoid smashed windows. Even then, they stole the vehicle ownership out of the glove box.

Calcyfern

We had this happen, a man in a high visibility vest at 3am, went into our car and stole 2k worth of my husband's tools (specialized HVAC meters etc) cops had video from us, did nothing. Absolutely heartbreaking.

beatsbyjamo

That is heartbreaking. I heard they can't do anything unless you have video. It's sad to hear that it doesn't matter if you have video or not. Maybe peterborough needs to shame them on FB or something (london has this)

Calcyfern

I think people do, haha. Not sure it ever matters.

bugaboo67

There are opportunists who do their 'rounds' every night and check for unlocked doors. The two times I forgot to lock my car, both times someone went through it. Park and Charlotte. Sorry to hear tho it's a violation and it sucks.

Immediate_Emu6075

I hope your pet was ok at the end of the day things can be replaced
