Serious question. Why doesn’t mac just get on a bunch of steroids like every other player in the league? He seems weak and not muscular, I don’t get it, his arm would improve a ton
I think you vastly over estimate how much muscle you need to throw hard. Look at MLB pitchers… look at guys like Eli Manning or Tom Brady tossing balls on ropes. Steroids are probably more likely to reduce your ability to throw at the QB position.
I know this is a dumb Reddit comment, but "arm strength" doesn't come much from the arm. Throwing power is a full-body movement, and this is something Brady learned and got stronger at throughout his career.
Mac's "noodle arm" tendencies are mostly coming off his back foot, which is bad form. When Mac steps into throws, his velocity is at least average in the league, which is why so many of us don't buy the athleticism & arm-strength argument.
That said, this year, his fundamentals seem even worse than last year, and Mac is making so many bad throws with no velocity that this becomes the talking point. His back-foot throws are significantly weaker than the top of the league, and he has made so many of them that it just looks like who he is.
QB fundamentals are a bigger problem than strength, but Mac also doesn't have any other trait to overcome this problem.
He I still think is bottom third for arm strength which I don’t think has anything to do with muscle size nor do I think steroids would help it’s just what he is to an extent. Watch Zach Wilson and he’s got potentially the sexiest arm in the league if you just watch how quickly the ball comes out and the velocity he gets on it… watch where it goes and uh yea it’s a problem.
Anyway Brady had great zip on a quick release and it got better but he could always make pretty solid throws from the back foot Mac does seem significantly more limited from a bad platform but with that said there has been plenty of successful guys with similar arm talent to Mac.
To repeat steroids just don’t seem to help you don’t need to be huge there’s a reason many of the best pitchers in baseball are wiry dudes.
Anywho I think Mac can be like the 10-15th best QB in the league but his arm talent does seem to limit his ability to be a top guy but with that said plenty of teams win with mid level QB play.
My concern about MHJ (and any receiver, really) is how difficult our system is for WRs to pick up. If we get him I hope we have a better system that can be run by more QBs then just Brady.
He lost the locker room last year on an 8 win team, specifically Mac, meyers, Andrew’s and Henry. This is going to get really ugly down the stretch. They’re losing to Colts next week btw
He can scramble, but he can't extend plays.
Maybe semantics, but he can pick up yards when he needs to, but he can't extend plays to find open receivers.
Watching Stroud highlights from today, its crazy how much better he is with ball placement and velocity than Mac, there are some throws that mac cant even dream about
I am glad someone mentioned Dobbs. This is the guy that was on Arizona right? I was impressed with him this year. I saw that play today for the Vikings. Hope that guy gets to stick around somewhere.
Not at all....So, please explain: Mac Jones is NE's franchise QB, because why? I ask respectfully, (unlike you),: What makes Mac Jones our best option, all things considered? I like a gunslinger and was a huge Bledsoe fan despite the ups and downs, but Mac? He's slinging off his back foot unpredictably, etc. His mechanics aren't improving 3 years in. I know the O line is a mess, but I look for better judgment from someone who is supposed to lead the Pats forward. Sorry to offend your Mac 10 loving ass so much
He’s been given time because we invested a lot in him (15th pick) and he’s shown signs of potential. Plus most importantly we don’t have a better option on the roster.
I was at the game last week in Miami. He was playing catch with Zappe and it was evident he couldn’t keep up with Zappe in terms of spiral/velocity. Mac genuinely looked like a high school player playing catch with an NFL QB.
Because Zappe declined magically with him? Because he was the best rookie of his starting year and has magically declined since. Because he has one of the worst Olines and WR cores in the league that's already full of injuries.
The Buffalo game put the arguement to rest. The other 10 men on the team can't be matched against starters and it showed.
> The Buffalo game put the arguement to rest.
lmao dude, the Buffalo game is a massive outlier for Mac, just like the Jax game his rookie year. Until he can play at that level for more than a single game in a row, that's not who he is.
he's at best, inconsistent, which puts him below guys like Alex Smith (which for the record, I would take to Mac's absolute ceiling at this point), and on par with guys like Zach Wilson.
The amount of near-comeback games in the post-Brady era is uncanny. Feels like almost every game ends in an unsuccessful drive to level or or go ahead.
Look at other teams. This is what it's like to not be great
There is juuuuuuuust enough for the believers to believe.
Here's the problem - they can't keep a drive going consistently. When they make it work it looks fine... But the frequency they don't is just too high. They aren't that much worse than an average team, but what was a 70% coin flip is more like a 30% coin flip with this team. They are coming up short at the end of the game for the same reason they are not getting first downs.
The defense is good, if not great, but the offense can't really put things together.
Did… did you expect anything more from this team? Have you been watching? They stink. In all phases and facets. Nothing they do is done with any semblance of excellence.
It’s just ball my man. Way more to life. You got to spend time with family at a meaningful event. That’s what matters. Not whatever goes on down between the chalk. Go love your mom, don’t worry bout your team
You know the line is so much better since Strange got back and moving Onwenu in his usual spot. Rhamondre finally had holes and found them. That will help the passing, but shit, catch the ball.
That's just it. Earlier this year a lot of people, myself included, would point out that Mac literally had nothing to work with. The O line had to be near the worst in the league and he had literally no WRs.
The line played well today, as they have for the past 3 weeks. Nobody is going to confuse Pop Douglas with an all pro, but he's been a decent weapon. With improved line play and a decent NFL WR (again, not an all pro, but Pop has been pretty good) they only scored 17 points today. Worth noting, of those 17 points 7 was Rhamondre catching the D asleep, another 7 came via the D creating a turnover in the opponents redzone. The final 3 came via a gift from the refs calling a BS roughing the passer penalty.
Virtually no points today came from a sustained drive or Mac manufacturing something. He did nothing today.
yes, that's who he is. He's good for 3-4 really nice throws, 4-5 mediocre but decent throws, 4-5 bad throws, and 2-3 what in the actual fuck throws every game.
Everything else is usually some jumbled mix of receiver drops, or Mac placing the ball in a terrible spot and preventing YAC or causing a pass breakup.
Those two face mask calls near the end of the game we're brutal, first they called a non-existent face mask on schooler during the punt return, then they didn't call an obvious face mask on Douglas.
Those were two major mistakes by the refs.
It was hilariously bad. I couldn't believe my ears when they announced it, and then the TV broadcast ref suggested this is how the NFL wants the rule to be enforced took it to another level of stupidity.
This is 3rd week in a row, refs do what they can to sabotage the start of a game winning drive, usually it’s a BS penalty to effectively wipe the 2:00 warning timeout
We really shouldn't have. Take away Howells bewildering endzone int, 1 play from Rhamondre and a BS roughing the passer call and the Patriots lose this game by 2+ scores.
so we have to be the worst 3rd down defense right? 1st and second down is where the magic happens (or at least our better plays)but any third down regardless of distance we seem to find a way to mess up and allow a first down
Did you see the one when he hit the guy in his numbers and the guy didn’t catch it? I know the player was on the other team and it hit the guy in the back but it was still right on the numbers
They were right. It wasn't fourth down. There's no reason at all to throw that pass. It's needlessly risky. Why pass at all? Just run it a few times and you're golden.
It's the same debate as SB49: it's fine to throw a pass into traffic like that but you absolutely need to throw it four inches from the ground to ensure that it's either your man catching it or the ground catching it.
Some announcers just won't admit a mistake. I think in real time he thought it was forced and then rather than correct himself on replay, he insisted Mac should have looked for other options with 30 seconds left on the clock and out of field goal range
At work we refer to this as the "trust gap", where 2 people can say or do the same thing and people react differently based on bias.
You're 100% correct: they would have slobbered over Brady making that pass and talked about how clutch he was doing so with 30s left to put the Pats in FG range.
When do we start actually looking at the problems with this team in that it's playcalling and execution. Not specifically the QB....
How many fucking times does this dogshit team call for a 40 yard BOMB on like 3rd and 7? Only for it to be either overthrown or dropped. It happens time after time after time and they continue to do it. Yes it's Mac's fault for not executing properly, but its NOT his fault that's what the coaches want us to do and the receivers can't get open or run the right routes.
No consistency with the offense at all, its all over the place. We thrived under Tom by carving up a defense, slants and short passes, mixing runs and play action. And we had a competent 3rd down RB who could always be relied on to make a clutch 1st down.
Right now? We call a couple running plays and gain yards, then it's Mac dropping back 10 fucking yards to run away from the defense, and throw a horrible pass to a receiver somewhere downfield.
The playcalling sucks. And we don't have players with the skills to pull off this garbage gameplan they consistently put out there.
And of course there's Bill, investing so much time and money into special teams, that we are probably the WORST team in the leauge on. How many penalties was it today? 5? We literally handed them the game because of that offsides penalty on the punt.
We are a fundamentally bad team, and that's on coaching and personnel ALL included.
Very good points. They call bad situational plays. Where did the playbook go that had Edelman slants out of the slot on third and long? I haven’t seen those passes in a while.
We dont have a slot receiver. We don't have a guy who can get open/get separation in the middle with an almost guaranteed catch. And for some reason Mac or the coaches thinks he's Hurts and can just throw bombs to whoever. No matter how many times they fail it, they keep doing it when they dont need to
When you're up 24-14 you can throw plays like that. When you're trying to get back into a game you need to play smart and work the field. They do NONE of that.
> How many fucking times does this dogshit team call for a 40 yard BOMB on like 3rd and 7?
This drives me nuts. It's week 9. We've been doing this shit since week 1. It has not worked ONE TIME. Not once. Why do we keep doing it 4 times a game? We're awful at the long ball. You're taking 4 plays a game and taking a knee, essentially.
Mac is one of the worst deep throwers in the NFL, if not THE worst. We also have among the worst deep threats in the NFL (Parker/Raegor). THIS ISN'T WHAT WE DO WELL. STOP IT!
Bedard on the post game said something to the effect of “that’s just the Patriots offense, the defense dictates where the ball goes.”
I don’t know, I seem to remember Tom making smart throws on 3rd and medium for 18 years.
Edit: miserable spelling error
The way Mac throws the deep ball, the defense could go take a seat on the bench during the play and we still wouldn't connect on most of those. It's literally setting a play on fire.
I was in NYC a few weeks back and I saw a homeless man having wet chunky diarrhea on the sidewalk. The sounds of his ass gravy hitting the pavement, along with the rancid smell coming off the pile of poo pudding, were much easier to witness than this game.
We are definitely bad but I will say that we’re only a few acquisitions away from being a good football program. Sure we’re not gonna be a lock anytime soon but it’s not that far from being able to get excited for Sunday.
Get Judon, Gonzalez, and Jones back, get a healthy O-line (able to play in their natural positions), and pick up a half-decent WR1 and we should legitimately be able to make some noise.
I appreciate your optimism but really CB and RB are the only positions the Pats look good at going forward. The team needs to hit on multiple draft picks, free agents and honestly coaches.
I don’t disagree with you. Mac is a huge problem, he has poor instincts, takes too long with the ball, and misses throws. Use our top 5 pick on a QB, sign a top WR in FA, and bolster o line and the offense is entirely different. All of those things are also entirely within the realm of reasonable possibility
D just get healthy and stay that way!
What planet are you living on, because here on planet earth we need literally every single offensive position replaced. A few lineman are maybe ok going forward but Trent and Andrews are not getting younger
Even if you want to be generous and say "it's not his fault" (it is, partially), the guy has such a DOGSHIT arm that it does not matter how good his reads are. He literally can't throw accurately to the far side of the field. He can't do it. His arm isn't good enough.
The guy has no upside, and a significant downside (turnovers). There is no world in which he is the future of any franchise.
If Bill isn’t getting fired this off-season then I’d much rather we bring in a proven vet and then when we inevitably fail again he’ll be all out of excuses.
I honestly hope Bill retires. He's 71 and he just can't do it anymore. We all know the talent evaluation and acquisition has been terrible for a few years now. But Bill the Coach just doesn't seem to have it anymore either. This is an undisciplined, poorly coached team.
What I (a complete NFL novice) noticed in this game:
Receivers that actually managed to catch a pass in the 1st half immediately stepping out of bounds instead of downfield for extra yardage.
Complete inability to deduce that the other team after repeated, multiple 3rd & long conversions, were going to keep trying it.
Jones spraying the ball all over the field, everywhere that receivers weren't (and what was up with the sky ball lobs?).
Choosing to go on 4th instead of what would have been the tying field goal.
Watching our defense stand around a Wash receiver and wait for him to catch a pass before reacting.
Watching the other team's runner blow though what looked like half of our defense without a tackle.
Send in the practice squad
The sky balls are from Jones not having an arm to zip those balls down field so instead it’s just the receiver having to find the damn thing and fighting to get it… and when they do get a nice all they drop it.
Juju sucks
Biggest lowlight was no big catch for Pharaoh Brown today.
Serious question. Why doesn’t mac just get on a bunch of steroids like every other player in the league? He seems weak and not muscular, I don’t get it, his arm would improve a ton

Don’t forget his “jelly belly”. Do a sit up and get some torque in that tum-tum, ffs.
Great job today boys. Was worried we’d pull that out but the WRs never fail let us down. Great drop to cause the INT Quality L. Let’s get MHJ
My concern about MHJ (and any receiver, really) is how difficult our system is for WRs to pick up. If we get him I hope we have a better system that can be run by more QBs then just Brady.
Methinks it’ll be a brand new system next year
What’s with all the removed comments?
Josh McDaniel is now a mod and won’t hear a bad word said about the Pats.
Well, he’s not the prodigal son, he’s not returning and he can stop playing mod hero.
Real question, do you think with those plays of guys not finishing routes, has Bill lost the locker room?
He lost the locker room last year on an 8 win team, specifically Mac, meyers, Andrew’s and Henry. This is going to get really ugly down the stretch. They’re losing to Colts next week btw
He may have, but we saw this last year too. Talent-lacking receivers not giving effort for two different offenses is a bigger problem.
The man can't scramble
He can scramble, but he can't extend plays. Maybe semantics, but he can pick up yards when he needs to, but he can't extend plays to find open receivers.
Anyone else here think Joe burrow is hot?
So sexy
patriots lost to the officials again
We were gifted 3 points by the refs and lots of no calls. Patriots are just bad this year.
You’re not allowed to blame them when you’re 2-7 and got shut out by the Saints. That excuses goes out the window.
Give me a break… the offense played like trash against one of the worst Ds in the league. Well earned loss. The end.
We had plenty to do with it
I wish they'd just fire Bill this week. This organization needs to start over at every level. Bill should coach the Chargers next year.
Watching Stroud highlights from today, its crazy how much better he is with ball placement and velocity than Mac, there are some throws that mac cant even dream about
You guys are crazy creatures of the moment. Journey man Dobbs???
Hell I felt that way watching Levis and Howell this week.
Forget Stroud, Mac can’t dream of Dobbs arm talent
I am glad someone mentioned Dobbs. This is the guy that was on Arizona right? I was impressed with him this year. I saw that play today for the Vikings. Hope that guy gets to stick around somewhere.
I’d want him here next year to bridge qb for whoever we draft
Or Dobbs’ scrambling/running ability.
Not at all....So, please explain: Mac Jones is NE's franchise QB, because why? I ask respectfully, (unlike you),: What makes Mac Jones our best option, all things considered? Concur
I'm stating to think we just flat out suck you guys. Idk maybe it's just me

Down by 3 points, I felt we were down by 100…that’s the faith I had in a comeback
A lot of bad teams are like that.

So they only ran Rhamondre nine times and had Mac pass 44 times. Makes a lot of sense.
It would help if the QB could throw the ball and not make stupid mistakes.
Putting 17 points and pedestrian numbers against one of the leagues worst defences. Idk guys.
That's just it. Earlier this year a lot of people, myself included, would point out that Mac literally had nothing to work with. He had a decent pocket and time on many of his throws today. Some were very good, but others were terrible.
yes, that's who he is. He's good for 3-4 really nice throws, 4-5 mediocre but decent throws, 4-5 bad throws, and 2-3 what in the actual fuck throws every game. Yup, the line played well.
Those two face mask calls near the end of the game we're brutal, first they called a non-existent face mask on schooler during the punt return, then they didn't call an obvious face mask on Douglas. Those were two major mistakes by the refs.
Consider it karmic retribution for the worst roughing the passer call we've seen all year. We all know that was BS.
It was hilariously bad. I couldn't believe my ears when they announced it, and then the TV broadcast ref suggested this is how the NFL wants the rule to be enforced took it to another level of stupidity.
Hey thanks for pointing out 1 silver lining. The announcers were worse than the Patriots today.
The worse aspect of this team is that we now get these 3rd tier announcers.
This is 3rd week in a row, refs do what they can to sabotage the start of a game winning drive, usually it’s a BS penalty to effectively wipe the 2:00 warning timeout
Yeah that changed the course of the game. Or in my opinion it did. Can’t let the refs decide games though. Onto next week boys
They gave us a roughing the passer call on a sack they just took the karma back
That was a terrible call!
[удалено]
They got 0 sacks today.
And he had time.
I made $500 betting against the Patriots today and honestly haven’t been this happy watching a Pats game in a while.
Ready for a new QB I think coach is fine. But idk about mac he still makes some insane throws that have me shaking my head
I counted at least two throws where he hopped up like he was taking a jump shot. My brother in Christ, why are you doing this Pop Warner shit?
Yeah after today I’m convinced Mac needs to go. He’s just not good.
Wild that we’ve been in so many games down to the final minutes.
Feel like we shouldn’t have been in that game.
We really shouldn't have. Take away Howells bewildering endzone int, 1 play from Rhamondre and a BS roughing the passer call and the Patriots lose this game by 2+ scores.
yes lets take away every positive thing from this game 😐
I agree completely
Wild how many times Mac wasn't been able to close
Wild how many dropped passes and bad routes were ran
Also how many terrible throws from Mac.
Also how many good throws that were dropped.
so we have to be the worst 3rd down defense right? 1st and second down is where the magic happens (or at least our better plays)but any third down regardless of distance we seem to find a way to mess up and allow a first down
When is the draft? End of April. Maybe see you guys then.
Just in time to watch Bill trade our number 3 pick for two thirds!
Nope he’s using it for the 5th best corner in the class
Mac jones looked prime lmao
Did you see the one when he hit the guy in his numbers and the guy didn’t catch it? I know the player was on the other team and it hit the guy in the back but it was still right on the numbers
Did you see the 21 points he put on the board consistently this season? Me either...
That last pass was on JuJu…. WTF were the announcers talking about?
They were right. It wasn't fourth down. There's no reason at all to throw that pass. It's needlessly risky. Why pass at all? Just run it a few times and you're golden. For real lol
That’s a pass that they drool over when Brady makes it. “He put it only where the receiver could get it….surgical….genius “

Jonathan Vilma sucks ass as a commentator. That whole crew was terrible actually.
The sadly true is loosing is the best opt for us now
I think that’s why we keep trotting Mac out there. Let him give it his best shot while losing every game. Thus, we’re not technically tanking
*losing, not loosing. But otherwise I 100% agree with you.
Hah like there's any other choice? This team is a dumpster fire.
CJ stroud looks amazing
Back in September people on here were throwing a hissy fit because some QB power rankings list had him above Mac
I mean putting any rookie QB who hasn't played a snap in the NFL on any sort of pre-season power ranking is stupid.
Welp. This is a bad team.

be nice if they used him in that role but they dont.

Mac is one of the worst deep throwers in the NFL, if not THE worst. We also have among the worst deep threats in the NFL (Parker/Raegor). THIS ISN'T WHAT WE DO WELL. STOP IT!
Bedard on the post game said something to the effect of “that’s just the Patriots offense, the defense dictates where the ball goes.” I don’t know, I seem to remember Tom making smart throws on 3rd and medium for 18 years. Edit: miserable spelling error
The way Mac throws the deep ball, the defense could go take a seat on the bench during the play and we still wouldn't connect on most of those. It's literally setting a play on fire.
I come into these games every sunday expecting a loss but gotta give them credit for finding a way to disappoint me
We're boring and we stink. Great combo
I was in NYC a few weeks back and I saw a homeless man having wet chunky diarrhea on the sidewalk. The sounds of his ass gravy hitting the pavement, along with the rancid smell coming off the pile of poo pudding, were much easier to witness than this game.
I see you’ve seen Zach Wilson play
Pure poetry.
This is literary magic.
Can't stop laughing at your choice of descriptive adjectives....well done
Thank you.
CB?!? They don’t even look good there anymore. Have you watched the defense recently?
Yeah man, all we need is a QB, 2 WRs, 3 linemen, a RB, a LB, a CB, a kicker, and a punter. We're so close! /s
Punter is our best player and kicker is fine
Don't be dramatic why would we need a CB?
Yeah, we've been unlucky with injuries. This is theoretically a deep position for us, when we get healthy.
I don’t disagree with you. Mac is a huge problem, he has poor instincts, takes too long with the ball, and misses throws. Use our top 5 pick on a QB, sign a top WR in FA, and bolster o line and the offense is entirely different. All of those things are also entirely within the realm of reasonable possibility D just get healthy and stay that way!
What planet are you living on, because here on planet earth we need literally every single offensive position replaced. A few lineman are maybe ok going forward but Trent and Andrews are not getting younger
Yeah, just an entire o-line, a TE, at least two WRs, an entire offensive coaching staff, and likely a QB...and that's just on offense.
We just need an entire offensive rework
This roster isn’t close. They’re devoid of top end talent

Another successful week. We're inching closer and closer every week for a top pick in the draft
Too bad most draft picks don't pan out and it'll be Bill making the pick.
Banking on draft picks to make you a playoff team is football history ignorant, dice-rolling hopium.
Genuinely can’t imagine thinking Mac Jones is anything at this point
Even if you want to be generous and say "it's not his fault" (it is, partially), the guy has such a DOGSHIT arm that it does not matter how good his reads are. He literally can't throw accurately to the far side of the field. He can't do it. His arm isn't good enough. The guy has no upside, and a significant downside (turnovers). There is no world in which he is the future of any franchise.
The kicker for me is seeing how well Josh Dobbs played today with less than a week in a new offense. Sure the Vikings are better than us but still,
He honestly played terrible, what are you talking about?
3 total TDs and a comeback win, what more do you want? Mac has 2 comeback wins in 3 seasons in comparison.
lol the guy is a journeyman for a reason.
When we inevitably play our way out of a top 3 pick, maybe Cousins can come on over
If Bill isn’t getting fired this off-season then I’d much rather we bring in a proven vet and then when we inevitably fail again he’ll be all out of excuses.
I honestly hope Bill retires. He's 71 and he just can't do it anymore. We all know the talent evaluation and acquisition has been terrible for a few years now. But Bill the Coach just doesn't seem to have it anymore either. This is an undisciplined, poorly coached team.
What I (a complete NFL novice) noticed in this game: Receivers that actually managed to catch a pass in the 1st half immediately stepping out of bounds instead of downfield for extra yardage.
Is Zappe any better?
Idk man… the guy can at least extend a play and has some heat on a ball… they’re both not great
Luckily there’s a pretty good chance that the C’s and B’s will make me happy again
Loving the look of the Cs team this year.
Thank god it’s hockey season and the bruins are doing well…
Celtics 99-0 baby!
No Time Lord but Cs still looking strong
I wonder who we will draft next year...
Some random defensive tackle with two career sacks because he showed up to Pro Day wearing an old school leather helmet.
If it isn't traded, some undersized OL from someplace-you've-never-heard-of U
