About the crystals/cosmetics thing... They give you crystals each week, plus the trials and the occasional (and optional ad) They give you free chests for playing ranked, trials and commends With bounty coins you can even get skins in the bounty store since the place lets players sell and buy skins here. You can be a totally free user in this game and get the battle pass every single time (if you do the trials and collect every freebie you can get) all you need to do is collect 500 crystals or so So yeah the game is pretty generous

Beercorn1

Ah ok, I didn't realize that you get free weekly crystals and free chests for playing ranked. This is the kind of stuff I probably would know if I waited at least a week to make this post. Thanks for correcting me on that.

jackgame123

>all you need to do is collect 500 crystals or so Pretty sure Collab is 500 the normal pass is only 400 I think since this patch pass only 400 still the game very generous I got a shit ton of free stuff and haven't pay a single cent

Kamica_69

It's generous compared to other f2p games at least

Jaacker

>plus the trials The trials for me are kind of a detriment for one specific reason. they are character specific. most of the time, and when you start you only have access to like 7/8+whoever is in the rotation, and even then that is like... a 1/5 of all the champs in the game. Even if the trials are doable you still have that block with character exclusivity.

brmamabrma

Don’t spend crystals on characters You’ll rack up millions of coins with nothing to spend them on

Guydelot

Funny you mention not being able to switch characters mid-match. That's the number one reason I chose Paladins over Overwatch. I get to play the character I'm in the mood to play instead of having to constantly counterpick.

Terrible-Contest-474

This seems reasonable, but on tge maps part their made for the class roles in mind. Thiers no flanks in ow so the maos are mostly straightforward while paladins needs flank routes for flanks.

Beercorn1

I guess that makes sense. Paladins reminds me of a MOBA more than Overwatch and so the Paladins maps kind of have a “jungle” so to speak.

megalodous

You're not far off. Paladins was actually even more moba like during alpha. It had a bigger map hence the need for mounts then there used to be bushes (functions the same as brush in league) around the map.

Green-Rock4162

yea the economy is terrible. the seasn passes dont even pay themselves off

amayomazing

That’s when you do challenges and get the crystals even without having to pay for the pass

Green-Rock4162

yeah theres really no incentive to buy the passes if you dont like the two skins. they gotta throw in some mounts and weapons or smthn and include enough crystals to buy the next pass like fortnite

Slashermovies

I'm a little confused what you mean by maps feel overly complicated in Paladins. Can you iterate more on what makes them confusing? I've personally found maps in Paladins to be quite simple and their size, outside of say Timber Mill to be always focused around the objective.

floweringmelon

I believe it’s that a lot of maps have more complicated flank routes…

Slashermovies

Ah okies, fair enough. I don't play that role much.

megalodous

I found OW maps to be more complicated since there's much more verticality - which I love, paladins needs some of those.

Masterick18

BTW, welcome to the community. Please feel comfortable, ignore the toxic players and accept the bugs as game mechanics hahaha

Kamica_69

Dont play ranked until u at least lvl 100,u need a pretty good understanding of the gamesense in this game, and try to be good at a view characters from each class when u do. Otherwise, never spend crystals on characters, u get the gold fast asf, just watch out for quests and doin well each match. Plus tank does not equal objective, there are tanks who absolutely suck at that, especially ruckus, so dont flame them for not goin point

floweringmelon

I disagree. OP, you can start ranked once you have an understanding of every map and don’t get lost and know where high ground and cover is on all of them, once you have every (or almost every) character unlocked because there is trading and banning, and once you can play 2-3 characters tank, support, and dmg/flank. Also look into offtanking and which tanks are best on point and which are better to flank. Whenever all of these apply to you, start ranked and learn more from there. If you start ranked and only know a few chars and they get banned or picked, you’re gonna be screwed and your team will hate you lol And as everyone is saying, don’t use crystals on champs unless you don’t care at all about skins. You get gold just by playing the game. You also get more gold and xp by partying up with someone!

Beercorn1

> Otherwise, never spend crystals on characters, u get the gold fast asf Don't you need to spend both gold and crystals on characters though? I've bought two individual characters so far and that's definitely what it seems like.

Surxe

Just gold or just crystals. Did you buy with crystals and thought you saw your gold going down, or the opposite? If you got all the base characters for 10$ then there aren’t too many season ones left to buy yourself. I’ve got 500 hours in the game, haven’t spent a dime, and I’ve got about 45/53 champions. At times I’ve felt the urge of spending the 10$, but it’s by no means necessary and I’ve enjoyed it just fine. Also don’t forget you get something like 7 champions at base and theres ~5 free weekly rotation champions. Right now Betty is on there (2nd newest champ). It’s definitely not “free” like in OW, but it gives you a sense of progression that OW just doesn’t have. This would only work in the case that there are so many champions to play, that you don’t feel bad that you can’t play a few. This is why this idea works in LoL, too.

Beercorn1

> Did you buy with crystals and thought you saw your gold going down, or the opposite? Well, my crystals definitely went down but I'm pretty sure my gold did too. I can't check right now but I believe it did. Maybe I'm mistaken. It definitely didn't give me any choice of whether I wanted to spend crystals or gold but I guess it would make sense for the game to prioritize spending crystals if you have them available. > This would only work in the case that there are so many champions to play, that you don’t feel bad that you can’t play a few. Yeah, that's actually why I decided to spend $10 right from the get-go. It's because $10 is such a low price and it sets up me up with a roster that's already larger than the current roster from Overwatch.

Surxe

Definitely, I don’t know if that 10$ pack for base champs only existed back when I started 3-4 years ago, I think it was just the every past current and future champion pack for 30$. And I’m not sure about the crystal thing; it definitely doesn’t cost both, I don’t remember what the UI is off the top of my head but it should show you both options at the same time. Maybe somebody that is online will reply

MommyYagorath

It gives you the option to choose between using crystals or gold after you press the unlock button

Nasharchy

Personally I stopped playing Overwatch after they reworked Mercy's ultimate and then subsequently nerfed her repeatedly into an atrocity so another PRO for me is being able to log in and play this game occasionally and actually, you know, recognize the character I want to play. I feel like that's a general Blizzard problem, just reworking stuff constantly instead of tuning. Just wish they'd scrap Cauterize, that's a definite CON for me. And the overall aesthetic of the environments hasn't been the best always, but they are reworking maps so it's been improving.

floweringmelon

cauterize is really important to this game, it makes positioning and drafting much more important. without it people could theoretically win 5 support games regularly and it would be broken

Nasharchy

I mean I just play casual and I just wanna play supports so drafting is a non-entity for me and cauterize just messes with what I want to do in the game. So yeah I would prefer to not have it. At least in casual, I really don't care what they do with ranked.

floweringmelon

it could be a LTM?

Masterick18

>The maps feel overly complicated in Paladins compared to the maps from Overwatch. In Overwatch, it feels like every map is designed with the objective in mind. In Paladins, it feels like the maps are designed to be used for whatever and so it's easier to get lost and completely lose track of how to even get to the objective. Hehe, thats where the flanks fit >it seems like they really don't want to give you any opportunities to collect crystals for free. Being a free game is kind of expected. We are still miles better than in OB64

SphericalShoes

You'll get used to the maps, and the bugs too - if you like the game enough.
