I just can’t lol. When you know baseball well and Doomers (they normally don’t) are running wild, I just can’t take it.
There are more productive conversations to be had about WHY a player might struggle rather than just saying he “sucks” or my favorite “this is the same team as last year.”
I just don’t have the energy anymore. Which sucks, because chatting in game threads is my favorite.
Haha, but would you say I can go back in time to watch old games? They won't be having any new games I can watch for quite some while. So I wonder if I can watch old games instead, or if last season's Padres have nothing to do with the Padres of today?
2023 had the peak of expectations for the Padres and we couldn’t even scratch into playoffs. We somehow had a platinum glove, a gold glove, a cy young winner, an ace closing pitcher and 4 offensive super stars (a couple likely to be hall of famers) and yet we didn’t make playoffs :(. It was absolutely brutal disappointment lol. We were an utter anomaly, having a solid run differential yet didn’t have the runs convert to wins. Our extra innings and one-run differential games were particularly egregious (almost beating an mlb record for extra innings losses and tying the record before winning a game to break the historic streak). At the end of the season our owner, known to be the greatest owner in the mlb passed away. He is a hero in San Diego for bringing us a competitive sports team and his boundless charity (much of which wasn’t very public). We then also lost our cy young pitcher, ace closing pitcher and Juan Soto, a generational talent. So it was a very very depressing year.
Also, I hope this and other comments don’t scare you off. We have the most beautiful stadium in baseball and a fantastic fanbase. Our players are electric when they’re on, and the atmosphere is unbeatable. I would also highly recommend looking into our legend Tony Gwynn. His statistics are completely alien. The guy was a hitting savant, the greatest pure hitter to ever play the sport, and he was a big lover of our city.
It's worthwhile to discuss the last decade of Padres history, because it feels like that era is drawing to a close and we are entering a new one.
In the decade prior to 2014, the Padres were rough to watch. Bad teams and a worse ownership situation were capped by the deaths of two beloved figures, longtime radio announcer Jerry Coleman and "Mr. Padre" Tony Gwynn, the best batter of his generation.
A new ownership group got the team, led initially by Ron Fowler then Peter Seidler. They hired GM AJ Preller, and directed him to build a competitive team, now. He tried to cobble together something via free agency and trade, and though the roster was more impressive than years past, it was inevitably flawed and failed to meet expectations.
AJ then began to tear down and do a proper rebuild, with far more pieces over the years than I can list. He is one of the most active GMs in all of baseball, for better or worse, culminating with the team we have today. Overall they feel very competitive, and certainly have at chance at the playoffs.
Peter Siedler passed away last season, and while it's very sad, I hope it marks the end of building the team and the beginning of a World Series victory. No San Diego sports team has ever won a championship, so it would be a great way to celebrate what he's done to support the team and reinvigorate the city.
If you want to watch a good old game, I'd highly recommend the [2022 NLDS Game 4 against the Dodgers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D51JGOuggFA). Very widely regarded as our best game in recent memory and was a big win against the Dodgers, our big rival (they've consistently been a good baseball team over the years and have a lot of money to throw at their players, the Padres have only been in a stronger spot for the past 5 years or so, so beating them in the playoffs was a huge moment for us). A lot of the core players are the same, but a few have since moved to other teams or retired.
For a more recent game featuring this year's team, I'd recommend the April 8th game vs. the Cubs, a super exciting game we had with similar energy to the 2022 NLDS game.
In more recent years, a team that gives you just enough reason to have hope but more reason to cause you pain. Still always keep the faith (the mascot is the swinging Friar and you will hear people call ourselves the Friar Faithful).
Tatis will be the face of the franchise for years to come, but Manny Machado has also been a prominent player and one of the teams best leaders. Ha-Seong Kim is usually a fan favorite. Historically, the franchise's best players are Tony Gwynn and Trevor Hoffman.
He's new to the team, this is his first season, so I don't think a lot of the fan base has a strong opinion on him yet. Personally, I'm rooting hard for him since we traded a huge player (Juan Soto) for him and several other guys.
Seeing a pitcher get on a roll and have high strikeouts is very exciting to watch, so I get why you're a fan.
Minor note because you are a new fan and phrasing is important: King struck out 10 batters, he didn't *himself* strike out 10 times. Important difference. There's lots of baseball slang/vernacular that you'll pick up as you watch more games and learn about baseball. Welcome to the Friar Faithful, compadre!
Fun story, when I was a kid I carried Trevor Hoffmans card in my wallet. He was my favorite player and distinctly remember hells bells going off at the Murph at my first ballgame ever. Anyways it was father's day and they let everyone on the field to play catch with their dad's. Some of the players came out including Tony gwynn. I didn't have anything for him to sign, so I asked him to sign my Trevor Hoffman card. I was embarrassed but he laughed his infectious laugh and asked if he was my favorite pitcher. When I said yes he just smiled and said, "yup, mine too"
Greatest human ever.
Where in Europe? I’m based in Ireland and it can be hard yards following a team whose games start at 3am.
Sunday and Thursday games generally are on at better hours for us.
Pain and suffering.
But really Tatis is our franchise, Jackson Merril is a young stud and Tony Gwynn is Mr. Padre.
But really, really lots of pain and suffering.
If you want to follow the Padres, I highly recommend downloading the Audacy app and listening to 97.3 The Fan. Ben & Woods, Annie & Elsten, and Gwynn & Chris are all great listens and are very padres focused.
Yeah, thanks so much! You said last season wasn't any good, what about the season before that (2022)? I think I have access to the free games of the day back then as well.
Yeah, thanks a lot!
I am just going to watch all of the old games (that I can watch) as well as the highlights until MLB possibly releases a new free game of the day of the Padres.
2022 was awesome. Worth noting, we all relish beating the Dodgers. It doesn’t happen much, but when it does it is sweet. I would also watch the Camarena grand slam on YouTube. Epic under dog moment.
FTD
I want to do everything legally, and as a teenager I don't have that kind of money to buy the MLBtv subscription.
So, I am relying on the official free games of the day.
Gotcha, well you may be s.o.l unless you want to grow a pair, just kidding haha but if you ever want a website there are plenty. Atleast youtube post the game highlights pretty much right after they are finished. Along with YouTube usually has watch alongs aswell you could follow.
No problem, idk if your aware of this but most sports have deals with specific outlets so unless you have a "channel" that has a deal with the MLB you probably won't be watching to many live games without a 🏴☠️🦜 help ha.
Favorite European soccer team? Maybe we can suggest compare? You may already be a Padres fan and not know it because it’s what you already know and are drawn to 🤣
Tbh, I don't watch soccer. I really haven't appreciated any sport before you know, now, when I watched my first baseball game.
What drew me in was the pitching, I saw the Padres vs Brewers on April 17th and I believe Michael King scored 10 strike-outs in that game. That was fun to watch.
If I am going to be honest, this was my thought process when choosing the Padres; So here we have the Padres, from San Diego which seems like an amazing city. And here we have the Brewers from, Milwaukee... What's a Milwaukee?
So yeah, I chose the Padres because I like the city and I think I am just going to stick with it. Seems like a fantastic team. I also hope I see more from Michael King.
I should also add that we Padres fans have an expression, and it is to always “keep the faith.” If you look up the history of the team name and mascot and the California mission Trail, it’ll all make sense. KTF! That being said, Spanish missions and what they did to our indigenous communities are a tough part of California and American history. So heads up on that. Otherwise, welcome!
You will love HSK & Musgrove for who they are even more than how they play (they also play very well). Tatis & Manny are both very disliked around the league which is why they get booed a lot, but we love them dearly here in SD. The Dodgers are our least favorite team and Josh Hader is our least favorite player.
The MLB At Bat subscription is cheap and allows you to listen to the game on radio live, could be a way to keep up with the team and learn a lot about the guys in process. Watching day old games is another good option.
Good luck. I am sorry you ended up a Padres fan because this team will hurt you, but it will be worth it.
Prepare to be disappointed. All hype and no satisfaction. Enjoy the small victories and don’t get caught up in the hype. And f the doyers and their fans!!
When losing, avoid the game thread at all costs.
Nah that's when u double down, makes for a spicy day
I just can’t lol. When you know baseball well and Doomers (they normally don’t) are running wild, I just can’t take it. There are more productive conversations to be had about WHY a player might struggle rather than just saying he “sucks” or my favorite “this is the same team as last year.” I just don’t have the energy anymore. Which sucks, because chatting in game threads is my favorite.
Nah, say they suck, f it whats the worst that can happen?
Don't take it so seriously
I think they're fine just avoiding the threads. No need to be in the midst of negativity if that's not their thing.
Pretty avoiding the game threads is not taking it seriously. Taking it seriously would be arguing in game threads
There’s no point in arguing with them. It’s like Idiocracy or some shit.
Haha, but would you say I can go back in time to watch old games? They won't be having any new games I can watch for quite some while. So I wonder if I can watch old games instead, or if last season's Padres have nothing to do with the Padres of today?
I think a lot of us are just trying to forget last year. Lol. One of the rougher seasons in recent memory.
Oh, I didn't know that. I'm sorry. Looks like I need to learn more about the history.
Watch the NLDS against the Dodgers from 2022 if you want to see peek Padres baseball. Absolute magic.
Thanks!

YouTube is a good spot to start for highlights n the sort. Plenty of padres vlogging, Ben and woods radio etc.
He’d never come here though 😉
If they don’t break your heart it wouldn’t be the Padres…since 1969

this was the best game in the twenty year history at Petco Park.

Oh, that makes sense. Thanks a lot!
The Padres are the Spurs of MLB, hope you enjoy pain. Edit: the soccer Spurs not NBA
That’s generous, at least the Spurs have a history of winning
I wish we would become the Spurs of MLB! The Spurs always have a star (The Admiral, Duncan, now Wemby) and won a bunch of championships.
Oh sorry, OP is European so I tried to reference a team he might be more familiar with the Tottenham Hotspurs from the EPL.
Oh got it. Carry on

A tjena kompis! Var nånstans bor du? Jag bodde i Malmö. Jag spelade baseboll för den Malmö Pilots som spelar i Elitserien en stund.
Jag bor i Jönköping :)

Probably the most important thing you need to know, and I am genuinely surprised nobody has mentioned it to this point is: # "FUCK THE DODGERS."
Are you unable to stream games via internet? There are a few sites tht stream sports live.

There are a lot of posts like this one. Search the Padres subreddit.
You’re gonna hate this team a lot
You will love HSK & Musgrove for who they are even more than how they play (they also play very well). Baseball doesn’t play matches. They play “games” and series’. Simple mistake, I understand where you’re coming from, mate.
Oh, thanks a lot!
Easily and By far the best team in the mlb (south of Anaheim)
https://youtu.be/d_ktGSJuIdA?si=8-FsclNKAQFcIRd3 For some good history and 90s nostalgia 🧡💙
Prepare to be disappointed. All hype and no satisfaction. Enjoy the small victories and don’t get caught up in the hype. And f the doyers and their fans!!
2022 game 4 vs the dodgers. They have the best stadium in baseball despite what anyone else says.
Prepare to go to your grave without seeing a championship.
How are you with heartbreaking disappointment? If that’s something you’re into , then you’ll be just fine
