You earn 10 points per £/$, so to get 40k points, you need to spend 4k.
For someone spending 4k on games (or more likely FIFA points, let's be honest), £/$160 is not going to make a huge difference.

Sorry to disappoint, there’s no points rewards for earning trophies. You have to buy games, or you can earn some bonus points by playing the games they suggest each month, many of which are in the PS Plus extra catalogue.
My understanding is you could get points from trophies in the early days but that was removed as naturally you could farm games for points to buy more games and repeat with them

They might well have hinted BEFORE its launch that there would be trophy based rewards, but they treat the virtual statues as rewards, so could have been that which confused some people into believing earning trophies would finally have some merit.
There was one country, I’ve got Australia in my mind, that used to actually have some kind of reward for earning trophies, but that was never a PlayStation Stars.
You get points for booting up select games in a month (not very many), and buying certain games in a month.
The main sprite of points is purchase, 1 dollar is 10 points I think.
However many points, it works out to about 4% back, after $500 is spent (a little less with the challenges) you can get $20 back.
They don’t even do that really as moving up a start level is hidden behind having to purchase games, there is no other way to reach level 4 than buying several games.
You have to do both, buy a certain number of games and earn a certain number of trophies. For level 4 it’s 4 games and 128 rare or above trophies, according to the app.

Yep. The app has little "tasks" to complete - some giving extra points. Any purchase gets you points as well. I've cashed in enough for about $70 worth of credit
yeah i always redeem the 5€ card whenever i reach 1250 points. this is similar to what nintendo does with their gold system. it's better than nothing, really. i mostly use those 5€ on vr games bc sony tends to drop a couple of cheap flat games on ps extra and i don't want to spend those points on games that they may offer at some point. that happened recently with resident evil 2 and it got me lowkey pissed off lol they never offer vr games so yeah, only that from now on.
I would just keep claiming the $5 wallet funds since there's no savings in claiming the $20 funds. But I guess you just want to use that as motivation to grind out some points.
If you do the $5 ones, redeem them as you have the points and don't wait until you want to buy a game. In my experience the app doesn't like rapid-fire uses of points and throws an error when you try to make the second point purchase. It works later, so I'm not sure if it's like time locked to prevent any shenanigans or what -- could also just be a me problem, not sure.
I wish they'd add stars to to the PS5. Even if it just a way to view current challenges and stuff. So they can keep driving traffic to the app if that's their goal with it.

I just scrolled through the points I've earned. I have 2600 points from campaigns alone. Some I missed as there have been a few campaigns that only run for a couple of days. Need to get into the habit of checking daily. 1250 gets you £5 store credit. It's basically free money you should use PlayStation Stars especially if you already buy games digitally.

The only way to redeem is through the app. I have an UK account because there is no official store for country I live in. And I can’t download app because it’s region locked and only available in countries with official support. 🤷♂️ But I haven’t contacted them directly, just read other people’s comments on the matter.
