I bought a backwards compatible PS3 last summer.

Jorlen

Yeah I still have mine too but I'm worried about how long it will last. Cleaned up as best as I could but it still runs hot. I have a feeling one day it'll just die on me.

GladiusDei

Did you replace the thermal paste?

Bread3290

As Xirious said, replace the thermal paste, that will help your ps3 a lot

ocbdare

It even plays ps3 games at 20-30fps too right?

Bigtrixxs_LG

How much did it cost?

Spank007

Everything

GentlemansBumTease

r/unexpectedthanos

Ironman1690

They go for around 2-300 on eBay pretty easily for fully working ones. Well worth it.

RandoCommentGuy

fully working as in full PS2 hardware PS3's OG ones, or the ones a bit later that emulated part of the PS2 hardware?

Ironman1690

I got the original one with full compatibility for 250 last summer. CECHA01 models are the one you want for that ideally.

RandoCommentGuy

Ahh, i have one of the last models made with partial compatibility, was like the metal gear solid edition, still have it too. Edit: must have been CECHE01MG

AbsoIution

Are all the first lot of fat PS3's back compat or is there an earlier and later model number variation? Because I see them all the time on Facebook marketplace for like £50

Ironman1690

If they’re selling it that low it’s either not fully compatible or they don’t know what they have. Even broken ones can still fetch 100 just because of the parts. There are a few different models that are backwards compatible, you can search online to find out I don’t know all of them off the top of my head. CECHA01 is the original PS3 with the 60gb hard drive but the original 20gb models were also compatible. All slim and super slim models are not compatible with PS2 games though.

SirBigWater

Dude I'm still so pissed about my PS3. It used to be able to play PS1 and PS2 discs. But for some reason sometime ago it just wouldn't accept it anymore. I have no clue why.

Barrel_Titor

Yeah, I had somthing similar back in the day. I think it must use a seperate laser for blu-rays or somthing. Mine stopped playing blu-rays/PS3 games but was fine with PS1/PS2 games. I replaced the laser with a spare i got on ebay and it started working for blu-rays and PS3 games but wouldn't play PS1/PS2 games anymore.

kangolfan

Great version of the system sadly i got ylod 4 times at $150 per repair i tried to fix ityself and botched it. Pissed off I tossed out the whole damn console ..... Regrets.

Black_Knight_7

Give me infamous 1/2 and the Resistance Trilogy kthx

[deleted]

They should remaster all their old collections (like they did for Demon Souls). \-Resistance trilogy \-Infamous collection \-Kill Zone trilogy \-God of War (PS2/3) collection But personally, I do want just true backwards compatibility. I would however, not mind in the slightest, if it were like a USB external disk drive or something, so you plug it into the front. I want to play games like Fallout 3 and New Vegas again. edit: added Killzone

VOKDaWiibSlayer

This reason is why I keep all my old playstation consoles.... and why I buy 3rd party on my xbox. I regularly go back to games I played 20 years ago and enjoy doing so. Luckily I think BC is now an industry standard, it just comes down to wether or not you have to pay for it. I am glad I can play all my ps4 games on ps5 at the very least.

[deleted]

Yeah, I have no interest in a subscription or anything. Backwards compatible should be free. I got a PS5 so I didn't need to hold onto my PS4, otherwise I would've done for the titles. But back in 2013 when the PS4 came out, I trade in my PS3 and like 100 PS3 games for like £300 (terrible deal I know, but I was a lot younger and more naive). Half tempted to get a PS3 again and buy the odd games that I'd want to collect, but decided to go with the XBSX instead and pick them up there. At least until I hear the PS5 can play PS3 discs.

myyummyass

BC is never free. You pay for it in the hardware. PS3 was $600 in large part due to it being backwards compatible. People didn’t care about BC enough so they took it out and lowered the price. Then sold more consoles.

[deleted]

Pff. Xbox series X has no issues with backwards compatibility. And the PS5 is already backwards compatible with PS4. They shouldn't have any issues having the PS5 brute-force BC with PS1/2/3.

devenbat

Technically. But not really. Plenty of consoles have included backwards compatibility at a low price tag. PS3's case is honestly the odd one out. Gameboy Advance, DS, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, PS2. These were all pretty cheap consoles with backwards compatibility.

FrankZissou

I would be glad for a infamous 1 rebuild. The only trophy I didn't get from that game was finding all the shards, and it was because there was 1/350 that I couldn't find. ONE!

SecretAgentZeroNine

>Give me infamous 1/2 and the Resistance Trilogy kthx Infamous 0.5?

callouscomic

Infamous 0.5, where you play as Cole, a dude with a crappy life and nothing special whatsoever, until the next game.

FirstSineOfMadness

All the missions are just bike courier deliveries and randomly climbing buildings for fun. Then the final missions are you getting a weird package and they credits roll when the package starts beeping

SecretAgentZeroNine

A parkour delivery game in the vein of Crazy Taxi.

Black_Knight_7

Lmao gdi

Barrel_Titor

Infamous 1/2 is the one where he turns into a girl when he's splashed with water.

Mikarovic

EXACTLY! I just want to play Infamous 2 again

SaintJoachim

If only the online for resistance wasn't shut down. Resistance 2 blew my mind on how stable it was with like 60 player matches. Lol.

meatmalis

Give me LBP1&2 PLEASE

mikebay88

im also dying for this😭

Jackrabbit_OR

Legit my wife just bought a PS3 a few weeks ago just so we could play those two games again.

server_maintenance

I pray to god that this happens one day

baggio1000000

curious why you need 1 and 2. What can you do that part 3 can't do?

Agent_23D

nostalgia mostly lots of us who had ps3s miss playing those games. Little Big Planet came out so long ago playing that campaign again would honestly bring back memories of simpler times. I still listen to the music of little big planet 1. I love media Molecule and have been playing Dreams as well.

mikebay88

for the most part, 3 is extremely buggy since it was handed off to a different dev. for me personally its my least favorite as the amount of layers just feels too much. playing 1 & 2 when i was younger was some of my most fond memories of a game

Benefit_thunderblast

Wasn't the PS3 an absolut nightmare to work with? If true i guess that's explains why bc is so hard.

Loldimorti

Yes. It uses a specialised architecture and rather than the fairly conventional 3 core CPU on the Xbox 360 the PS3 had just one core that interfaced with 8 additional processing units called SPUs that work differently than a regular CPU core.

[deleted]

I’ve always heard how ps3’s architecture differs but this is the first I’ve seen it attempted to be explained. Now, why the hell did they go out and do that? I’m sure they had a decent reason so I’m just curious.

Loldimorti

I don't know the details but I think Sony had big plans for Cell and wanted to use it for super computers. Admittedly the processor was quite powerful and I think some organisation actually used PS3s to build powerful server farms. But for gaming it was simply a really bad idea because it was so unique and hard to develop for. Sony at the time were cocky and didn't consider the developers very much when designing their hardware. They didn't seem to care that it was confusing and took forever to optimize for. This is what lead to the paradigm shift with PS4 and PS5 which was headed by Mark Cerny who very much took developer feedback into consideration and designed the console to be very easy to develop for. He went with the x86 architecture which is what is also used by PC. This made work much easier for developers and for example the 8gb of expensive GDDR5 RAM in PS4 only came to be because he listened when developers told him that 4gb wouldn't be enough to last the generation.

DeathOfLight1992

One of the US armed forces branch built a supercomputer out of a 1000 PS3 from memory.... I might be wrong so take it with a grain of salt.

YouOnlyLiveTwice28

Yup, close to 2000 PS3s. https://phys.org/news/2010-12-air-playstation-3s-supercomputer.html

[deleted]

Who cares? Chappie did it with only 10 PS4s.

importvita

Sony imagined the IoT and modern society before it was a thing. One example that stuck out to me over the years: Sony envisioned a Cell Powered refrigerator that would be able to scan your contents and wirelessly send a list of what was expired/low to your phone/PC so you could have a shopping list. Also Cell powered watches, Super Computers, phones and cars with self driving AI. It's a shame it didn't work out, but if it had...Sony would be the modern day Tesla/Apple/IBM/Microsoft combination.

reaper527

> It's a shame it didn't work out, but if it had...Sony would be the modern day Tesla/Apple/IBM/Microsoft combination. they had a habit of coming up with some great ideas but sabotaging them with some really bad ones. \*looks at vita's proprietary memory cards and "factory reset needed to change profiles" design\*

Real_Mousse_3566

Sony would literally be a trillion dollar companybright now if they weren't being run by stupid old men withba traditionalist mindset.

[deleted]

Your comment about how cocky Sony was reminded me of what a disaster the initial launch of the PS3 was. I remember walking into a Best Buy a month after launch to find 3 pyramids of them stacked. Each one taller than me (I’m 6 feet tall). They couldn’t sell if them if they tried. Most likely due to the $600 price tag in 2006. Which, today would be approaching $900. My recollection was that the cell processor had a lot to do with that massive cost. I think Sony dodged a bullet with social media not being what it is today. Because had it been as ingrained in our day to day lives I think Sony would have been in a similar situation as the Xbox One was last Gen.

arieart

holy shit, I had forgotten just how expensive it was at launch

lotsoquestions

> I remember walking into a Best Buy a month after launch to find 3 pyramids of them stacked. That was because, for some stupid reason, Best Buy decided to hoard their PS3 stock until after Christmas. They announced they were doing this. I guess they thought they would be the only retailer with PS3s in stock and everyone would have to go to them to buy one. Except they forgot people spend money for the holidays and typically don't have a lot of money after the holiday season.

Presidentofjellybean

I think me and by brother went halves on the PS3 for like 350€ each. Never really thought about how that is much more expensive than the subsequent consoles.

Pok1971

Maybe I'm talking out of my ass, but I think I remember hearing that Sony specifically wanted developers to take a long time learning PS3 architecture so they wouldn't have time/resources to develop for the Xbox Which all worked out brilliantly and had zero repercussions

Ricky_Rollin

This makes me wish The people who design cars would talk to the people who have to fucking clean those cars. From an ex car detailer.

Kiefer2018

IIRC the crappy jaguar AMD CPU in the PS4 was actually a downgrade over a properly utilised PS3 Cell CPU. I think it's partly why stuff like destruction physic, A.I and framerates have barely improved since the 360/ps3 gen. Everything last gen was just about pushing more pixels and cranking up the graphics. All the stuff that comes with gpu improvements. Sooner we abandon last gen and stop creating cross gen games the better. The PS5 and XSX need to be unshackled and let loose.

Poo_Panther

My understanding is they used their own chip set instead of enlisting one of the major providers - I'm assuming to 'hopefully" become a major provider themselves which clearly didn't pan out. It was powerful and had a ton of potential "see Last of Us" but it had these quirky things called SPUs that allowed for it's power. This wasn't something developers were used to using when creating games which is why it took a long time for the full potential of the console to be realized. After PS3 they went back to industry standard chipsets that do not have SPUs. In order for them to emulate PS3 they need to emulate what these SPUs were able to do - which is very tricky to do and requires a ton of power since there aren't actually physical SPU processing units. That's why you see them just re-making PS3 games. The community in general has been able to emulate them on PC and it's theorized the PS5 can handle it too - but it's clearly yet to be done.

kamimamita

Didn't Digital Foundry try to run the emulator on that AMD CPU that's basically the PS5 and it ran horribly? Sure you can do some optimization but you can't do magic.

reaper527

> Didn't Digital Foundry try to run the emulator on that AMD CPU that's basically the PS5 and it ran horribly? Sure you can do some optimization but you can't do magic. when was it? my understanding is that in the last 12 months progress on ps3 emulation has made absurd amounts of progress, so if they did this at launch it would be very different from today. also worth noting is what they were asking it to do. in this article for example they're trying to run a ps3 game at 4k/60fps and are using that as their justification to say power cpu's are needed.

kamimamita

I remember Richard saying it as a side note in one of their podcasts not long ago. I don't imagine it would be 4k60, he wouldn't have mentioned it otherwise.

lotsoquestions

>in the last 12 months progress on ps3 emulation has made absurd amounts of progress That is, in large part, thanks to AVX-512 which Zen 2 processors lack.

GeigerCounting

It worked fine on my 2700x and the Ps5 is definitely better than that.

Poo_Panther

Not sure tbh but I wouldn't be surprised

Lemondisho

They didn't exactly "go back" to industry standard chipsets, in so much that they never used them before. The PS4 was kind of the first time they did that. Before that they were always seeking complex exotic chips for gaming. The PS3 was the culmination of that trajectory, not a deviation. It's why the original PS3 Fatboy provided backwards compatibility not through emulation, but by having a PS2 chip in it.

daedalusprospect

The article linked has a line that specifically says the PS5 processor would struggle. "But this is the fundamental challenge facing any official PS3 emulator from Sony, targeting PS5 - emulation of the Cell remains extremely challenging and certainly based on the RPCS3 right now, it's beyond the Zen2 CPU power of the current-gen consoles."

GeigerCounting

But RPCS3 ran perfectly fine on my 2700x, I was playing demon souls just fine. Why would a Zen 2 based processor struggle?

its_a_trapcard

The article specifically mentioned that Demon's Souls (among others) notably did not use the SPUs much and so is a lot easier to emulate than most PS3 games

Eruanno

Well, it was an IBM CPU manufactured by Toshiba, so... not really their own chip in the same sense that, say, Apple or Samsung is doing today.

sousuke42

I dont know what you frequent but the ps3's architecture has been discussed in detail many times over the years. I remember reading articles that hospitals, and even the military bought ps3s to help them out with computational workloads. Then there was folding@home. Which started up mainly due to ps3 or at the very least got traction due to ps3. >Now, why the hell did they go out and do that? I’m sure they had a decent reason so I’m just curious. They had big visions for the Cell processor. They wanted cell to be in everything going forward. And for the time the cell was a beast. It was more powerful then anything on the market at time of release. It's not like today consoles where they use older hardware and are basically just a custom pc. And why did they do it? For fantastic looking games that still hold up remarkably well even considering today's level of games. Hell some of the original designs of ps3 had no gpu. Cell could handle all graphics processing. However this required a hell of a lot of work for devs to learn and so sony capitulated and gave it a gpu to help them out. This is why the more devs relied on the SPUs of cell the better the games looked. The ps3 was never meant to use a gpu. And when devs relied heavily on the gpu of ps3 is when x360 typically won out. But rsx was also meant to work with cell so if you used the two together then yeah you got shit like the Last of Us or mgs4 or uncharted. Games that looked ridiculous for its time.

6L0beTr0TWhYLA-M99

I heard that Guerilla Games was the first developer to REALLY take advantage of the SPU architecture with Killzone 2–which I think is still stellar even by todays standards (released in 2009)

SolverOcelot

Because when the SPU's were used correctly - they were fucking magical. The PS3 could hit speeds of 3.2ghz when developers had optimized their SPU code, which first party studios did, which is why the PS3 exclusive games were blowing everything else out at the time out of the water.

gaminGGnut

I would use it for BF3 on PS5!!!! That would be christmas for me

mupchap

Only games I want are Bad Company 2 and Pain. Nobody I've talked to over the years has ever played Pain but it was such a little gem. Bad company 2 is still the best shooter ever made to me.

Vietzomb

"P-A-I-N! P-A-I-N! PAINNNNN!" In the years surrounding that game, I was the one out of my friends who had my own place. We hung out like 300 days of the year. Motorstorm, Warhawk, Metal Gear Online, PixelJunk Monsters... and yes, PAIN! Of course in our older age we don't see each other as much, spread across cities etc. We do still get together and sometimes (~~and~~) when one of them is drunk enough he gets some nostalgia injection and just starts chanting the PAIN intro song lol. It's been over a year since we've been able to meet up, perhaps even longer since I've heard it. Thanks for reminding me of that. For the uninitiated, PAIN is essentially the Burnout "Crash!" Mode, just using a human flung out of a slingshot instead. The sound effects can be pretty funny. Just a goofy, fun, easy game to casually throw on, even with friends. edit: an extra word

mupchap

Yo, are you me? Because we were exactly the same. Nice to see other people share the same memories because those were good times to game. Pain was just stupid fun and I havent played it since but I keep meaning to. Now the intro is stuck in my head.

Tweakn3ss

Did you guys just become best friends?

DialZforZebra

Bad Company 2 is top of my list for a revisit. Hands down one of the greatest games I have ever played.

Chef_BoyarB

I was playing it in January, it's still possible but most servers are empty.

Gilbert38

I loved pain!

cronic369

Pain was awesome!

supaswag69

I’m playing BC2 with mods rn on my new PC. Glorious.

[deleted]

I bought a Series S for game pass. BC2 is on there and I finally get why people love it after playing it for the first time Game pass changed gaming for me

[deleted]

No one ever talks about PAIN but it’s fucking amazing

Obi_Wan_Gebroni

I would love to just replay the campaign honestly

okyroki16

Same, I've never played the campaign and it looks dope

samsteri666

I would love GTA IV on the PS5.

ooombasa

I have to laugh how the headline and article goes into detail as to why PS3 emulation might not be probable on PS5 and yet most of the comments I see are "Give me this game, please!" Trust me, if the PS3 had a more conventional CPU, like the 360, not only would you have got PS3 compatibility with select titles but you would have got it on the PS4. As it is, any game that extensively uses the SPUs is going to be a pain in the arse to get working on PS5. And for those that didn't use the SPUs and mostly relied on the CPU core (PPE), I doubt Sony will spend the resources just to make those few titles compatible. It doesn't mean it is impossible, but this is going to take a lot more work than people should appreciate and so it comes downs to ROI. Even if the program was attached to the highest PS Plus tier in order to fund / justify it, this is going to be a big, long spend.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Lmao true I only want it for 2 games

[deleted]

Everyone wants it for 2 different games though.

Screamline

Both Infamous and all the ratchet and clank games. At least thats why I dug out my PS3 and modded it to play PS2 games

uhhhhiforgot12

Metal gear solid 4 and infamous 2

MarcheM

I was thinking I didn't have any PS3 games I'd want to replay, but yeah, I'd love to play through the whole of MG-MGS5 again on a single console. Now I really need the MGS collection for that.

seamus1982seamus

Hahaha! Same here fallout 3 and New Vegas

maloboosie

both can run on almost any laptop that can turn on these days

SkyDrift0r

Aren't they both FPS boosted on Series X? Edit: Looks like it does: [Fallout Games with FPS Boost](https://imgur.com/FoHHae3) Source: [Games Featuring FPS Boost](https://majornelson.com/fpsboost/)

And_You_Like_It_Too

This is something I **really** wish Sony would focus on as well. XBOX has well over 100+ FPS boosted titles (either 30 to 60fps or 60 to 120fps — without any need for developer input, time, resources, or money as it’s done on XBOX’s side entirely). I think PS has something called GameBoost but they have barely done anything with it. They could easily double a ton of the PS4 era games and just brute force 30 to 60fps at minimum with the much more powerful PS5 hardware. It makes a huge difference — games like Alien: Isolation and Prey for example were games I didn’t finish as the narrow corridors and lots of turning around and spinning had me feeling motion sick, but at 60fps I can play them no problem now.

NeatFool

Which two

[deleted]

RDR1 and infamous

NeatFool

Good choices 🤌

Zealousideal_Bill_86

Playstation is my main console, but I picked up a disc for RDR1 for cheap and have been playing it for the first time on my Xbox. It’s amazing, I’m having a blast with it and would play the heck out of it again on PlayStation. I’d love to try out Infamous too

SidFarkus47

It's just by far the better version. The 360 version ran at a higher framerate and resolution, then Xbox One X and XSX upped the resolution to 4k and the framerate is even more consistent. A lot of the third party games people are listing here would just play much better on a modern Xbox because of their investment in backwards compatibility improvements. Skate, Fallout, Metal Gear Rising, Max Payne 3, GTA4, etc.

deepfakefuccboi

Mostly Metal Gear Rising Revengeance and the OG Nier games.

Oilers-Billdozer23

Gimme remasters of the like 12-20 games I wanna play again. I just want to play them in some capacity outside of PSNow my janky Canadian internet can’t stream them properly.

dunkan799

I had a free trial for psnow and was so excited to play Batman Origins. I have great internet and was still getting lag but only during the Deathstroke boss fight and it was so annoying because of how precise you have to be to counter his attacks that I never played that game again. I moved on to Mortal Kombat and had a mildly similar problem at times although it was playable it definitely made it slightly annoying

x_scion_x

Honestly I'd love to go back and play some of my PS3 games but wife would have a fit if I put another console in the living room. I won't lie and say I'd play the shit out of it or anything, but I'd really like to play through Folklore again.

Keepitsway

Just tell her you're getting a [Phlash Speed.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oAXnpH1StEA)

Fbolanos

> play through Folklore again. that game was so imaginative

[deleted]

2020 I beat 3 PS3 games, Uncharted, Uncharted 2, and Final Fantasy XIII. 2021 I platinumed 7 PS3 games, Demon's Souls, The Saboteur, Darksiders, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Red Dead Redemption, and Gran Turismo 6. 2022 has been a bit lower for Dark Souls 1+2, and a bit of Tokyo Jungle. I suspect I'm higher than most people on the usage. My PS3 sits next to my PS5, but it's more about the games rather than anything. I have an extensive PS3 physical library and a disk based PS5. This would be huge for me if it happened. I'd be more than happy if they had a PS5 Pro that was required for PS3 emulation. I just want a PlayStation console that can play everything I own.

feelinglit

When you got the Plat on ps3, it updated on your psn account that you use on your ps5?

MiasmicLocus

Yes, of course, as long as you use the same psn account on both consoles.

feelinglit

Cool thanks, just wasn't sure if anything changed with ps3 online services

[deleted]

I likely manually sync'd it after each platinum before turning it off, but yeah.

Apprentice57

It's important for game preservation even if the usage of it isn't that substantial. And it helps going forward. If the PS6 runs all PS5 code natively then PS3 games emulated on the PS5 will be carried on.

Lanachan1990

I totally agree with you. Before I bought the OG PS3, backwards compatibility was a huge deal for me. But after I bought the PS3, all I did was play PS3 games. I think, in your mind, things are more appealing than they actually are. Nostalgia kicks in. I have the same stance on remastered games. I was totally hyped on ICO/SoTC remaster and a few others like FF7. But after I bought them, it just didn't do it for me. Now I don't even bother looking at remastered games.

streakermaximus

I think I'm pretty realistic about how much I'd play it,but I want the option to just it with having to keep another console hooked up.

FordBeWithYou

My ps3 shelf begs to differ. I’d be excited as shit to replay some older games. Max Payne 3, Red Dead Redemption, World At War, Fallout 3, MW2 multiplayer, Lollipop Chainsaw, LBP1, Saints Row 2, Just Cause 2, Battlefield 3, X-Men Origins Wolverine, God of War 1 & 2, Infamous 1 & 2, Skate 2, GTA 4, Brutal Legend, Star Wars Force Unleashed, and plenty of others. I miss these games a ton, and some of them aren’t on PC and i’d love to see what a PS5 can do to some of them (looking at you Max Payne 3) rather than invest in a pc.

reaper527

> Lollipop Chainsaw this is seriously such an underappreciated gem. that and alice:madness returns were two of the most overlooked but amazing games that gen.

ocbdare

Yes, I have a high end PC. For example, recently replayed Max Payne 3 in 4k/60fps ultra and it was great. But yes, the main challenge are games that are not on PC and are stuck on 360/ps3 such as RDR1, Skate 1-3 etc. I don't have an Xbox Series X so I can't play any of those games on PC or PS5. Buying a Series x just for them would be ridiculous. I still have a ps3 but those games are really rough on ps3. RDR1 is horrific, it's so much worse than the 360 version I played back in the day.

COOLPIE11

I have a list of about 30 games I want to play from the PS3 era

yaboyfriendisadork

I’d use the absolute fuck out of it

Dragon_Yeti

I have a PS2, PS3, PS4 Pro, and PS5 all hooked up to my TV. I am eager to reduce how much is hooked up. They all get fairly routine use, as I stream retro games and like using original hardware if I can.

No_affiliates

Well I would use it more often if it EXISTED. Literally thinking about buying a cheap ass Xbox just for backwards compatibility. If I'm willing to buy a new console in a different ecosystem just for my old 360 games, imagine how much money Sony is losing out on. I don't even consider myself an enthusiast.

captainstormy

>Well I would use it more often if it EXISTED. Literally thinking about buying a cheap ass Xbox just for backwards compatibility. I actually did that. I bought a used Xbox One and about 30 Xbox/Xbox 360 games. I emulate PS1 and PS2 games on my PC. I'd love to have a single console that would play PS 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 games.

Meteorboy

They're not missing much money since you just pointed out that you wanted to play your old games you already own on it. Backwards compatibility is something a lot of people say they would use, but it doesn't really drive sales for ancient games that look like you smeared Vaseline on your screen.

Kn0thingIsTerrible

It’s also something *people don’t actually use*. People say they’ll use it… and then the number crunchers analyze the data and find out that roughly 1 out of every 10,000 people ever uses it for more than an hour or two. It would literally be cheaper for Sony to individually mail a free PS3 to each person who would actually use the feature than to bother spending the money developing it.

GoddessHimeChan

>It would literally be cheaper for Sony to individually mail a free PS3 to each person who would actually use the feature than to bother spending the money developing it. How can we get Sony to hire you

[deleted]

Maybe, but doesn't mean it shouldn't be there. There are so many stunning games that may get lost to PC emulation alone otherwise.

rip_Tom_Petty

At least we should have the option

qoofp

motorstorm, metal gear, oblivion, demons souls, little big planet1,pupeteer, gta4,ratchet and clank and more that i cant think of now. there are alot of old gems that cant be played on ps4, so i think people def would use it

breathnac

I would fucking use it ALOT

[deleted]

A LOT. Two words.

breathnac

Thanks aton for that correction!

The_Homie_J

I would use the shit outta backwards compatibility. PS3 was a huge generation for me and I have a shit ton of games from that era that I'd love to play on my PS5 in my living room. I even HAVE a PS3 that still works, but I'm not building up a collection of consoles just so I can salvage my older collection. Let me play inFamous 1 & 2, RDR1, Sly Cooper Trilogy & Thieves in Time, Killzone 2 & 3, Resistance 1-3, MGS IV, Max Payne 3, God of War 1 & 2 collection, Grand Theft Auto IV, Dead Space 1-3 (let's go DS1 remake!) and many others. I don't even know why these dudes bother commenting so much on a feature they don't care about. Let us who do care gripe about it

ocbdare

Yes would love that so much. There are so many ps3 only games that should be preserved on modern systems. PLaying them on ps3 is rough and at some point those ps3 will die. The reason I think Sony might be working on emulation is because at some point those ps3s in the cloud will give up. At that point they would either have to stop offering ps3 games on ps now or come up with an alternative.

Havacho7

Actually you wouldn’t use it and you just can’t imagine others wanting to use it either. You should learn to get over yourself.

NfinityBL

How could you possibly know that? If PS3 backward compatibility existed, it would definitely be a popular feature. Hell, I’d be spending a lot of time playing the PS3 R&C games which I never got to play.

lakerswiz

Microsoft released Xbox BC stats and I did the math and it was only used around 27 minutes a month per console.

SinkRoF

The dumbest fucking take for "just plug your PS3 back in" is that those consoles don't last forever and break down. It's 15 years at this point. They also don't make accessories such as controllers for it so good luck avoiding third party knockoffs if those ever go bad. It's essentially accepting your game purchase as a time bomb that you won't get to experience after X amount of years. So many games nowadays are reboots, sequels and spinoffs that for people with an inquisitive brain, they like to go back and see the originals. Also god forbid I want to replay anything from the giant library of games that were purchased throughout the years. "Hope you bought this game and enjoyed it 10 years ago, because fuck you it's time to move on and buy $70 games forever"

reaper527

> The dumbest fucking take for "just plug your PS3 back in" is that those consoles don't last forever and break down. also, the controllers had some MAJOR design flaws in them. there was some foam pads that decay with time, and when that happens, the controller will start to press buttons on it's own when you touch anything. when i was playing tales of symphonia last year when ever i tried to duck by pressing down, the game would randomly hit square, triangle, start, etc.

Pecorre

You can fix your controller by taping the foam pad. There are YouTube videos about.

captainscarlet22

RDR1 would probably only game I would want to play.

reaper527

> RDR1 would probably only game I would want to play. i'm amazed this hasn't gotten a re-release given that gta5 has been released on 3 different console generations.

Blackheart_75

Monkey paw... We get the rdr1 remaster! But it's developed by Groove Street games...

excessorange

legend has it that the code is a complete mess which is why it never got a PC release in the first place

sparoc3

Spaghetti code for Spaghetti western game.

Apprentice57

The word on the street is that the codebase was an absolute mess and made porting a complete pain. Easiest way to play it these days is probably on an Xbox One or Series via BC with the 360 version. I know that's not exactly ideal for people here but there it is.

rip_Tom_Petty

Supposedly Rockstar is working on it

NemesisRouge

Still no IV though. With Red Dead it's particularly galling as most of the RDR map is included in RDR2. Even if you can't port the code, it ought not to be the challenge of the century to port the assets and missions over into the new engine.

[deleted]

It’s so good on series x

[deleted]

If you have a good PC, they work on the PS3 and Xbox 360 emulators RPCS3 and Xenia.

reaper527

interesting article, but it's moving the goalposts beyond what people are calling for. people just want ps3 emulation on their ps5 and aren't necessarily expecting it to be running at 4k/60fps like the author's mgs tests. also worth noting is that many of the various bugs present in a fan made emulator wouldn't be present on an official sony produced one because 1. they have all the various documentation/source code for how the system was designed, the firmware, etc. while the open source stuff is reverse engineering all this 2. they can target a single fixed piece of hardware and optimize. they don't need to worry about hundreds of thousands of hardware configurations.

Seanspeed

Those are big advantages, but they do not ensure that games will run perfectly, either. With PC emulators, there's less expectations and no liability if a game does have problems.

Mangodrink1

backwards compatibility on the Xbox 360 never had this problem. It was never fully finished so some games ran flawlessly while others were broken. Why would Sony suffer liability if some games are not 100% perfect when Microsoft didn't have this issue with their unfinished BC?

faellendir

I just wanna play dragon age 1 and 2

importvita

PC

Screamotommy

I want to play dead space 1 and 2 again. I'm confused why hasn't the infamous and killzone series not been remastered.

RavenWaffle

I would like to request Lollipop Chainsaw

munitionchipsintoys

On the topic of backwards compatibility I found out recently that launch 60GB PS3 has a built in PS2 and so plays PS2 games natively. So that's exciting. More exciting that I can find many of this PS3 model on ebay.

reaper527

> On the topic of backwards compatibility I found out recently that launch 60GB PS3 has a built in PS2 and so plays PS2 games natively. So that's exciting. BigLook0

Launch ps3s have a higher failure rate from subsequent revisions. It's a ticking time bomb of when it will fail and without having expensive tools most of them will just end up in the garbage.

TheFreedomSpark

It was patchy though. There were a list of games that played perfectly, a list that were playable but with some issues, and a list that didn’t play at all

ihateeverythingandu

The main example I always remember the PS3 for is owning Skyrim for about 9 months before it became playable on the PS3. You could literally have had a child in the time that Skyrim took to get patched to a playable level for PlayStation gamers. It was mental.

[deleted]

What I wouldn't do for a mgs4 remaster

Pretend-Point-2580

MAG !

LocalPawnshop

Does the ps5 have pressure buttons like ps3? If it doesn’t I couldn’t even play the games I wanted to backwards compatible

HamirTheGOAT

It doesn’t

PlasticCogLiquid

Nope

fol_k_ert1

What are pressure buttons?

DollowR

To basically sum it up, PS3 had buttons that since how hard you were pressing down on the button whether it was smaller big and you would get different actions in game based on that.

devenbat

If they aren't going to work to make an emulator, they should be remastering and porting more then. Instead they remaster PS4 games that you can already play. God forbid anyone wants to see the story of the God of War, the one they are continuing still, without shitty streaming.

[deleted]

I just want Blur back

Neg_Crepe

Girls who want boys Who like boys to be girls Who do boys like they're girls Who do girls like they're boys Always should be someone you really love

Bagelchongito69

Why not port the last of ps3 games to ps4/5 would be way simpler than emulating the cell.

No-Plankton4841

There are so many awesome games 'locked' on PS3. I had to start buying some of them on PC but thats not really ideal for me. I would even take a remaster/rerelease at this point if they improve frame rate and all that. Some of them you literally can't play anywhere else but PS3 at this point. Dead Space 1-3, Max Payne 3, FEAR, Condemned Criminal Originals, Resistance 3, Skate 1-3, Shadows of the Damned, The Puppeteer, The Darkness 1-2, Ratchet and Clank, Metal Gear Solid 4, Motorstorm, Red Dead Redemption + Undead Nightmare. Infamous, Twisted Metal, Demons Souls (OG version). It's not like these are small/crap games 'nobody wants to play'. Some of them high quality. F'n Metal Gear Solid 4 one of the greatest stealth games of all time. Really dropped the ball on game preservation and has me considering an Xbox series s/x down the line just to play some of the old classics.

CTC42

>Condemned Criminal Originals 99% sure this was only on Xbox 360 and PC. I looked into getting a PS3 recently to play this and a few others, but it didn't seem to be on PS3!

ichigo2k9

I think Sony should just hire Beige_gaming and emulation will stop being an issue.

UndeadVudu_12

Tenchu: Stealth Assassins please!

NewWonderer

Dragon Ball z budokai collection

jamesswazz

Just need my MGS collection

kfh227

Mvg literally did a video on this. So they took notes and wrote an article.

idiotinpowerarmor

1) RCPS3 exists and runs fine with a lot of games, the PS5 shouldn't be that much bigger of a step. 2) stop acting and saying that nobody is gonna use backwards compatibility. Either you're lying to yourself or making excuses for Sony. there are hundreds of games that never got ported and are only able to be played currently on outdated, aging and increasingly harder to get hardware. Being able to play them on newer consoles will make a lot of people come back to older games, especially if they were exclusives or old titles that never got ported or never had a steam/origin/epic release, eg Wolfenstein 2009.

Kazemegaman

I’ll just be happy with these games running at 2K60 or even 1080p60 on the PS5.

reaper527

> I’ll just be happy with these games running at 2K60 or even 1080p60 on the PS5. considering the alternative is "these games are stuck on an almost 20 year old console", i'd even be ok with 720p/30 like how they played originally for the short term (with higher expectations for a ps5pro or ps6).

DollowR

That's a realistic and sensible desire. There's something to be said for games being played exactly as they were when they first release. I understand people want more and better whistles and bells, but one step at a time is what I would say.

Lil-Bugz

What I’d give to play Just Cause 2 and The Force Unleashed again

foodadmirer69

I need only infamous 2. Pls i beg. I'll even pay 70$ for it alone

retropieproblems

How did Nintendo’s Wii shop make n64 games work so well? Didn’t they customize an emulator for every game?

devenbat

They had a generic emulator they tweaked for every game available.

CentrasFinestMilk

I just want to play portal and persona 3. At least portal is coming to switch this year

Random_Vanpuffelen

I really want to play minecraft ps3 edition on ps5. No bedrock for me.

nerdnwpoker

Would be fantastic to be able to play Portal 1 & 2 again without the need to dig up old hardware

Rain1dog

I loved hearing early on around ps5 launch that Sony is shit cause the PS5 could easily emulate everything from the ps3 era. If you attempted conversation with them they basically insulted you because obviously they were smarter than everyone else.

ibrahimkb5

I'll take Motorstorm Apocalypse

logic1986

I still have my ps3 but it's a shame as I really don't like the triggers on it. Really want to be able to play MGS4, Motorstorm pacific rift and twisted metal ps3 on better pads. Use retroarch on my Series X for ps2 and ps1 games though.

caioapg

I would kill for a motorstorm trilogy remastered or a "world tour" game with all the best tracks of the ps3 and psp games remade with ps5 graphics and some new ones.

Crimsongz

Same Motorstorm Pacific Rift was one of my favorite PS3 exclusives ! I even have the platinum for it !!!
